Product Description

Explore the many fascinating nineteenth century traditions associated with death and mourning. The widespread influence of England's Queen Victoria perpetuated displays of grieving as she, her court, and loyal subjects remained in a state of mourning for over forty years. Over 300 color photographs display jewelry, photography and painted portraits, children's, men's, and women's clothes; poems, letters of sympathy, armbands, procession badges, hair receivers, announcements, and horse-drawn vehicles that were specifically associated with death customs. Symbolism in written phrases, flowers, and objects is presented and many examples are shown. Over 70 pages of a Victorian hair jewelry catalog are included, showing hundreds of designs that could be ordered as keepsakes, often using your own hair. Today's collectors of friendship and mourning memorabilia can expect to see antique items that not only speak of comfort and solace in times of need but continue to appreciate in value.

An Amazing Guide on Victorian Mourning Customs 4 by .. YA Librarian (Always Cloudy Upstate NY)
For anyone interested in collecting mourning trinkets(jewelry, photos, cards etc)or learning more about the various mourning customs of the Victorian Era then this is the book for them.

Every aspect of mourning is covered in this book. From how to prepare a person's home for a funeral, what to wear while in morning, and how to remember loved ones.

The photographs(color and black and white) are amazing. Each has a little blurb next to it describing what the item is. In addition the author gives definitions of popular materials used during the Victorian Era. For instance, she explains what French Jet, cannetille, bloodstone etc. are. There is also a section that explains what flowers, stones and symbols meant to the Victorians. In addition, different types of photographs are also mentioned in this book.

While I loved this book and am glad I bought it, I was somewhat bothered that Ms. Brett repeats herself frequently. A perfect example is one more than one occasion(and sometimes on the same page) she tells the reader that a white rose symbolized a child or pure young adult. Also I noticed that the blurbs by the photos often repeat what Ms. Brett has already written in the main text.

Still, despite the small shortcoming the book is amazing and taught me a lot of things that I did not know about the era. I highly recommend this book.

Victorian mourming book 4 by .. Chaska (Coastal waterways of Georgia)
This was a very informative book. Information about this era is hard to find, either about the clothing or the jewelry. This book has it all!
Good photo's as well.

A large dose of 'mourning history' 5 by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Explore 19th century traditions, history, and objects in a blend of historical overview and collector's price guide in Fashionable Mourning Jewelry, Clothing & Customs, featuring jewelry, photos, clothing, writings, and more. This fascinating survey does include the good-sized color photos and price guide collectors will want - but also a large dose of 'mourning history' makes the book a top pick both for collector's libraries and for college-level collections strong in American social history and culture.

Mourning Customs Review 4 by .. L. D. Yario (Chicago Illinois)
A fascinating review of the customs of days gone by. In depth research by the author makes it easy to jump the 100 year gap between the Victorian period and present day time.

wanting more 3 by .. J. Stout (Portsmouth, Ohio)
I didn't have a problem with the book, per se, but I wish there were more detailed captioned to place the garments at a particular year or decade. Also missing was information about the type of person, urban vs. rural or wealthy vs. working class, would wear particular clothing. The American is mixed with the British and Continental with no distinctions made to geography. Most of the attire was geared towards what the upper classes wore, while scant attention is given to regular, everyday clothes of average people. That makes it much less useful for me as a teaching tool. I had hoped to be able to use as a reference for students to be able to use as a jumping off point for making their own illustrations of historic events or perhaps keying it to historical fiction, something beyond Little House.

The book has some high points, but I still wanted more. For example, the section on underwear will surely thrill kids of all ages, however, each garment is shown separately on a page with different types of underclothes from different styles of the century, so it was difficult even for me as an adult to exactly determine, for example, which type of drawers would go with which crinoline. My daughter loves to make paper dolls, but this book had little to offer that isn't done elsewhere in more detail... for example, with the American Girl paper doll collection.

Definitely lacking is the section on women's hairstyles. It is impossible to even figure out how to begin to re-create any of the hairstyles, which are only shown from one perspective, the front.

The section at the end of the book about living history really didn't fit. The reader is inspired to re-create period dress, but there just isn't enough meat in the reference sections of the book to do it.

Edition : 1
Number of Pages : 314
Publisher : University Of Chicago Press

Product Description

When we donate our unwanted clothes to charity, we rarely think about what will happen to them: who will sort and sell them, and finally, who will revive and wear them. In this fascinating look at the multibillion dollar secondhand clothing business, Karen Tranberg Hansen takes us around the world from the West, where clothing is donated, through the salvage houses in North America and Europe, where it is sorted and compressed, to Africa, in this case, Zambia. There it enters the dynamic world of Salaula, a Bemba term that means "to rummage through a pile."

Essential for the African economy, the secondhand clothing business is wildly popular, to the point of threatening the indigenous textile industry. But, Hansen shows, wearing secondhand clothes is about much more than imitating Western styles. It is about taking a garment and altering it to something entirely local, something that adheres to current cultural norms of etiquette. By unraveling how these garments becomes entangled in the economic, political, and cultural processes of contemporary Zambia, Hansen also raises provocative questions about environmentalism, charity, recycling, and thrift.

Consumers as active participants 5 by .. Ms H Grant (London United Kingdom)
The author, an anthropologist, explores the phenomenon of second-hand clothes being exported from the West into Zambia, where they are sold on as "luxury goods". She argues against the idea that this is a North-South neo-colonial or aid transaction, asserting that Zambians are not just passive recipients of recycled clothes, but active consumers making informed (or at least broadly understood) cultural choices. She also explores how clothes, as cultural signifiers, give the wearer meaning in the specific Zambian social context. She also identifies reasons why people choose salaula and its impact on culture and "modernization" in Zambia Hansen explains the whole commodity chain of procurement, distribution and consumption of second-hand clothes. The reader may be surprised to learn that clothes given away to charities may be sold to exporters for resale in developing countries at all.
