More than a kids' "busybook" 5 by .. ()
The craft instructions in this book are indeed easy, fun, cheap to do (etc) for kids. But the best part was the discussion in the back of the book on appropriate levels of creative projects for kids of different ages. It clearly outlined what attention span and dexterity level you should expect from kids of different ages. And it had useful advice for adults on how to make the project fun for kids; not just push the child to produce an "aesthetically ideal" finished project. That unanticipated inclusion in the book made it really stand out for me.

A wonderful anthology of craft ideas for kids of all ages! 5 by .. ()
Kids Create! is an excellent collection that uses various mediums and can apply to children with varied artistic ability. I am a 6th grade art teacher, and I purchased the book after borrowing it from the library. There are too many wonderful ideas to let it slip away! My students especially love Carlson's collection of sculpting projects.

Simple crafts - using readily available supplies 5 by .. ()
Very useful book for those responsible for keeping young children interested and involved with handicaft projects. Supplies are readily alvailable and at nominal cost. Instructons are clear and uncomplicated.

Good, but not great 3 by .. Christopher K. Johnson (Goleta, CA)
This book provides a lot of crafts, but next to impossible ways of gathering material to actually complete them. I found the book useless without the help of a process or program to get the material from.

Great for Cub Scouts and creative kids! 5 by .. Judi Gordon (Austin)

Product Description

Here, at last, is a book brimming with the good news of raising children—the basic reassuring news about happiness and unconditional love, about enduring family connections and kids who grow up right. Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., father of three and a clinical psychiatrist, has thought long and hard about what makes children feel good about themselves and the world they live in. Now, in The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, Dr. Hallowell shares his findings with all of us who care about children.

As Dr. Hallowell argues, we don’t need statistical studies or complicated expert opinions to raise children. What we do need is love, wonder, and the confidence to trust our instincts. This inspiring book outlines a 5-step plan that all parents can use in giving their children the gift of happiness that will last a lifetime. Connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition: as fundamental as these five concepts are, they hold the key to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness, and spiritual values. Dr. Hallowell explores each step in depth and shows how they work together to foster trust, respect, and joy.

Privilege, wealth, and expensive “extras” are not necessary for happiness—there are many stories here of children who have overcome poverty, abandonment, and shocking deprivation to find true fulfillment. Dr. Hallowell encourages us as parents to reconnect with the moments in our own childhoods that made a difference; he explores the impact of genetics and environmental factors on the inner workings of a child’s mind; and he discusses how activities like team sports, community service, religious observance, and household chores can foster a child’s sense of mastery.

Like the works of T. Berry Brazelton and Benjamin Spock, The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness is infused with the wisdom and humanity of a doctor who truly loves and understands children. Writing with the warmth of a friend and the authority of an expert, Dr. Hallowell gives us a book at once practical and exuberant, joyous and informative, eye-opening and reassuring. Ultimately, this book is a celebration of childhood and of the magic that happens between parents and the children they love.

good, but there is better 4 by .. Just Me (here and there across the USA)
I found this book to be very good, but I recently found a book which is much better "Positive Pushing" by Dr. Jim Taylor. Both books address pretty much the same topic, but the Positive Pushing book, true to its title, is more postive. It presents a more postive way to help your child grow, and leads to a better balanced child. Positive Pushing does a very good job of pointing out what not to do, as well. Positive Pushing urges you to do more thinking about your child and what is really best for your child. The book makes sure that what you are working toward is actually positive, not just seemingly positive but ultimately harmful (or done in a harmful manner). The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness is good, but please check out Positive Pushing. (Despite the name, pushing isn't quite accurate, it's more like positive guidance.)

Play can't be overrated 5 by .. Bonnie Harris (New Hampshire)
What a helpful book for keeping the big picture in mind when raising children. Hallowell's 5 Step cycle is practical and shows the cummulative effect of children's learning process. I especially like step 4, mastery. Hallowell says, "The roots of self-esteem lie not in praise but in mastery." I couldn't agree more. Building confidence in children comes through learning how to do something well and feeling a sense of accomplishment. Praise is thin and doesn't go very far. He also stresses the importance of connection at home. Nothing more important than that!

Must read for parents and educators 5 by .. A. MARTINEZ (Mexico)
Dr. Hallowell is an amazing fellow. He strikes the perfect balance between being a knowledgeable psychiatrist and a vulnerable, loving and warm father. Whether you are an educator or a parent, you will learn much, reminiscence and have a chance to be a better person after reading this book. The Childhood Roots gives you good laughs and concrete tips to enjoy children and strengthen the foundation for life. Better yet, it gives you a map and the needed information to know whether you're still on the road or lost in your way. If there is one book to read when becoming a parent and realizing what your job is, this is it.

Solid and wonderful 5 by .. Aaron Cooper (Chicago, IL)
The warm and compassionate qualities of the author shine through this comprehensive and well-written book. Perhaps somewhat more detailed and extensive than many readers would want, in which case people should skip ahead. But there's plenty of superb content here. You can't help thinking what a wonderful father Hallowell must be as you read his personal stories and anecdotes.

This is really what you should base your parenting on. 5 by .. Dana Ryan Lande ()
I just had to agree with previous postings that this is the only book you need to read to get the fundamentals of what parenting should be about. It is practical yet roomy enough to fit many different ideals of family and home. I'm now ordering another copy!

He provides advice on the basic tools and materials; demonstrates how to construct bodies and faces; explains how to come up with appealing characters and build an ensemble cast; and provides ideas for fine-tuning the finished work with proper inking techniques, shading, and color use. There are loads of practical tips and hands-on activities to hone technique, along with tutorials on writing jokes. Plus, Roche gives the low-down on the big business of comic strips, including suggestions for getting published. To top it off, readers watch as the author produces a brand-new strip, from start to finish.

Discourse Structure for Comics 5 by .. ()
What I love about this book is the very explicit process given for making a strip. Kids can learn how to draw cartoon pictures from lots of books about cartooning; but how often do you read about story formula? This book helps a young writer add a sidekick, outsider or antagonist to his main character, asks specific questions to define the characters ("How would each character react to someone cutting in line in front of him?") and even outlines steps to make a joke. Roche's book would make a great textbook for a 6th or 7th grade class. My 11-year-old loves it.

comics for older kids 3 by .. M. gill (so cal)
This book has great ideas and suggestions. I feel it is more suited for the older kid to the adult. I liked their ideas, but there are many steps involved. Art for kids...I am not sure what age group they consider a "kid" to be. The book has great illustrations with tons of instructions.

A Great Book! 5 by .. John Sheppard (Hoschton, GA USA)
I just finished the book and it was great. It starts with the basics and logically takes one thru the creative process of making a comic strip. The combination of Roche's words and pictures drive his ponts home. You really get into the sample strip he creates in the book. I would recommend to any budding artist or cartoonist.

Okay 3 by .. Lady Whimsy (Minneapolis, Mn)
I expected more crafts. The crafts were okay, but they were limited and not nearly as exciting as the descriptions imply. Not bad. Not great.

Expect a taste and nothing more!!! 3 by .. Disney Teach (Tampa Bay, Florida)
Honestly, this book is great, but you could find more resources like what is found in this book on the internet. I own the whole series of the Play, Create and culture type books from this company/author. I feel I would have done better by searching the internet. If you see this book at the dollar tree, pick it up. Otherwise, do not pay full price. Expect a taste of games to play with kids, not the full course meal.

Fabulous book for kids! 5 by .. ()
This is an outstanding book for kids and helps them learn a lot about different world cultures. The activities are fun and creative - I haven't seen a book like this in a long time. The 'good will message flag' activity from Tibet sends a wonderful message and is fun to make. In addition to the activities the author provides plenty of cultural information that kids and adults will find facinating. This book will be enjoyed by teachers, parents and kids from around the world.

Gift to a friend's daughter 4 by .. E. Dorigo (Idaho)
I gave my friend's daughter this book for her 10th birthday. She is very out-doorsy and this book seemed perfect for her. As I looked at it prior to giving it to her, I thought some of the things seemed a bit young for her but I think she will still enjoy it.
