Can't ask for better book: "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies)" by .. Samuel A. Turks () I've first checked this book out from the Chicago Public Library three times and once kept it two months after the book check out expired. The I purchased the book myself. I can not offer enough praise for this well researched and written book on the Internet. This is definitely the "Book" for pros and "dummies" alike.
I have been working in technology for eighteen years with the U.S. Navy and using the Internet for nine years now and admittedly I only possessed about less 10% of the available resources that was presented in this book. Just visiting and bookmarking all those interesting link to various useful Web sites was good enough for me (100+ useful bookmarks from this book alone).
My college textbooks and other "big computer books" weren't as valuable as this one. With this new gained knowledge, I've referred this book to my instructor for the "Basic Internet Class" that I took at the one of the City Colleges of Chicago (Truman College) and my fellow classmates agreed that this book "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" was more informative than our classroom resources and textbook. Buy this book if you want to REALLY learn something about this subject.
One final thought, read Mr. Peter Weverka's "The Internet Giga Book for Dummies". You won't be disappointed in my recommendation on this wonderful read. Peace out and take care.
Excellent!! by .. Jason R. Bunner (Fishers, IN) You'll learn more practical information about "everything internet" within the pages of this book than 7 years of online meandering. Seriously, just buy this sucker cause it provides clear answers to questions you don't even know you have yet, or should have. Excellent book. Truly a horizon broadener.
Great book by Prolific Technical Writer by .. JimBob JoeBob (San Francisco, CA) I turn to this book all the time for information on how to build and maintain my blog (phatmike.motime.com). The best, most informative book that I've ever read on the subject.
Thanks, Mister Weverka!!!

Explore the best and brightest Web sites and services by .. Peter W. () Pardon me for being immodest and giving this book a 5-star rating, since I'm the author, but I believe this is the best book going about the latest incarnation of the Internet.
These are exciting times for the Internet. Peer-to-peer file sharing, news aggregators, and other advances in technology have inspired a new generation of Web sites and services. Never before has the Internet offered so many ways to conduct research, entertain yourself, or learn new things.
The motive behind this book is to present everything on the Internet that's worth doing because it's useful, it's a lot of fun, or it's innovative and therefore worth checking out. Close to a thousand different Web sites are described in this book, but this book isn't a directory of Web sites. The focus is on doing things -- researching, online banking, communicating, making new friends, playing games, talking over the Internet telephone, online shopping, online selling, and blogging.
In the course of describing these and other activities -- everyday activities that can be part of your Internet repertoire -- I introduce you to the best and brightest of the Internet.
For those who are interested, this book looks at the technical aspects of the Internet. It tells you how to select an ISP and gives you instructions for connecting your computer to the Internet. The book explains how to protect your privacy and security, and keep viruses and spyware at bay, as well as how to use the different plug-ins (Flash, Acrobat Reader, and others). You will find advice for making the Internet a safe and rewarding experience for children, many Web sites for children and parents, and instructions for using America Online.
Find out how to use a Web browser and how to be an Internet researcher, or better yet, an Internet detective from this book. It explains search techniques for reaching into all corners of the Internet to quickly find the information you need. You discover how to get the latest news and how to stay on top of late-breaking news with aggregators, as well as how to use different e-mail programs (some free and some not). You get definitive instructions in this book for preventing your inbox from being inundated with spam.
Look to this book to refine instant messenger programs, create a blog, and find mailing lists and message boards where you can exercise your obsessions. You find out how to conduct research in newsgroups and subscribe to newsgroups, as well as how to join or create your own Yahoo! group and chat on the IRC.
For budding Web site developers, this book demonstrates how to create a Web site on the cheap and how to submit a Web site to search engines so the site gets more hits. You also explore the social networking phenomenon and learn about Web sites and services where you can make new friends and reunite with old ones. The book has detailed instructions for setting up your computer so you can make free long-distance telephone calls over the Internet.
I devote part of the book to online finances -- how to research investments and get the latest financial news, maintain an online investment portfolio, and do your banking chores online.
You will find many shopping search engines and Web sites that specialize in comparison-shopping, as well as online catalogs, stores for bargain hunters, consumer-report Web sites, and an "online shopping bazaar" with hundreds of off-beat online shops worth visiting. I take you to a number of online auction houses, including eBay, and you discover how to search for, bid on, and buy items at bargain prices, as well as how to pay for items with the excellent PayPal service.
You find out how to be the first on your block to be an online seller and how you can make money by selling or conducting a business over the Internet.
Finally, the book looks into different Internet pastimes and pursuits. I'm warning you: Some of these activities are addictive. You discover the many excellent genealogical research Web sites and how to conduct genealogical research for free over the Internet. The book also looks at games sites, including novel games such as Geocaching. For travelers and armchair-adventurers, I direct you to Web sites where you can get travel advice, plan vacations, purchase tickets, and book hotel rooms and rental cars. You discover how to turn your lowly computer into an entertainment console by purchasing music online or sharing music files.
I am intrigued by the idea that a Web site is a creative endeavor in and of itself -- that a Web site is a clickable piece of artwork. For this book, I chose not only Web sites that are useful for finding information or buying things but also Web sites that I consider intriguing, wonderful, astonishing, bizarre, or entertaining.
Some people are calling this latest incarnation of the Internet "the Web 2.0." This book is your guide to the next incarnation of the Internet. It was written to show you how to make the Internet fun and useful again.

Product Description Wireless LANs, Radio Frequency Identification. OpenURL. Chances are you've heard these terms. But could you link them to their definitions on Jeopardy? Librarians are affected by technology in every aspect of their jobs, yet they often have little understanding of the technologies underlying the systems they use every day. Such a situation, according to Nancy Courtney, is untenable. Every librarian, no matter how "low-tech" his or her position, needs a basic understanding of computer technologies. To this end, she has assembled an impressive cast of contributors to discuss some of the more essential concepts and tenets in simple terms. Their combined intent is not to turn unsuspecting readers into IT practitioners, but to improve their technological literacy about topics currently of interest in the library community so that they can communicate effectively with systems personnel, their users and their funding authorities. If you are a librarian, and your primary job responsibilities are not in information technology, this book is for you! Related Search : technology rest , tech librarian , primer computer |

I'm a Mac user and found the info very helpful. Many books don't adequately deal with Mac systems. This one did.
Creating Web Pages for Dummies by .. Walter C. Farley (Maine) This is a pretty good book for beginners trying to learn how to create a web page, but it's a little confusing and the CD included with the book does not include any part of either Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Web. From the cover, one is led to believe that abbreviated versions of these are included on the CD. Instead, the CD has Nvu and links to other useful places.
creating web pages for dummies by .. Tina M. Lanciault (Delaware USA) I am new to the whole web site building, so this book was for me. It gave me a basic understanding of web publishing, free tools available to create my web pages and how to add links, blogs and graphics to my web site.
This book though, does not go into great detail about web design so if that's what you are looking for, this is not for you.
This is for the beginner who wants to get a feel for the process and work it takes to get a web site up and running.
I found it very helpful in getting me started on the road to creating a great web site.
Web Pages for Dummies by .. R. S. Harwell (Marin County, CA, USA) Great overview of the processes and techniques for creating Web sites. Well written and clear.
Basic but Helpful by .. Daniel O'Donoghue (Oklahoma) Like most of the "dummies" books this one doesn't go into great detail about certain aspects of web design, but it is a great starting point for anyone with zero web design experience.
It walked me through the interface of Dreamweaver easily and within a few hours I had a page up and ready complete with links and flash buttons.
Again not good for the pro but great for the beginner.

Customer reviews office 2007 for dummies by .. Cheryl Ingram (LA) The product has very basic information. Excellent Beginner Book by .. A. Decker (Vancouver, Washington United States) Readable, useful, humorous. I knew Word and Excel 2003 and needed to upgrade those to 2007 and learn Access and Outlook from start. This book would get you from no knowledge to being able to use the four programs I read about. Product Description * For readers intrigued by 3D video games as a hobby or a potential career, this book offers an introduction to the world of 3D game animation and provides step-by-step instructions on creating storyboards, scenery, characters, and even software * Cover topics such as working with 3D coordinates, keyframing, NURBS modeling, lighting, rigging, skinning, particle effects, and more * Video game sales exceeded the movie industry's box office draw last year by $1 billion Customer reviews Falling short... by .. Paul Lessard (Palmyra, IN United States) I purchased this book hoping it would help me show a novice how to start modeling for games. While the author covers the overview and technical terms, the essential modeling instruction is severely lacking. The book talks about creating detail but fails to deliver quality examples.
I bought this title because I own a few of the author's other works including the 3ds max bible. This was a dissapointment because it fails to provide the information on technical skills while it raises false hopes of earning money from games, if folks use this resource. (Read back of book cover)
The up side to this book is in the overview. It does introduce the information and resources needed for the game industry, and it covers the basic concepts of animation and modeling, but does not mention many important pit falls common to many an aspiring beginner.
Warning - not usable with Maya PLE by .. Richard Osborne () On p. 2 in the book "3D Game Animation for Dummies" it says, "the examples are taught using the free version of Maya." In the next paragraph, it says, "The Maya, Personal Learning Edition that is used for the examples in this book can be downloaded for free from the Alias Web site, www.alias.com, This version of Maya is not a limited trial version, nor is it a feature-disabled version. It includes all the features of the actual shipping version of Maya, except that the images are rendered with a watermark and the saved files are limited to this version."
After I bought the book and encountered a problem, Wiley Tech Support replied:
"The issue is not with your operating system or with the text. The issue is that you are using the non-commercial version of Maya, the Personal Learning Edition (PLE). Per the PLE FAQ at the Alias Products site (http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/faq.shtml#D):>>File Format and Data Input/Output: You cannot write standard Maya software files (.ma, .mb); only the Maya Personal Learning Edition file format (.mp) can be saved; however, you can import standard Maya software files.<< Thus, to fully utilize May along with the book, you would need to own the Maya Complete Edition of the software. We recommend you visit the URL given above and read the FAQ to familiarize yourself with the limitations of the version of the software you have so that you can make the necessary accommodations when reading our book."
A word of warning to potential buyers.
A great introduction to 3D game animation by .. Joe (Paso Robles, CA) Sure, you won't be able to land a job at Electronic Arts just by reading this book, but it's a great way to explore the topic. The author does a great job introducing animation lingo and techniques to novices. If you don't know your NURBS from your keyframes, this book is a great place to get educated. It may even whet your appetite for a more detailed book, such as the author's 3ds max Bible.

Customer reviews Great for Non-Accountants, Accountants Use Last Chapters by .. Laurin B. Morrison (Maryland Suburbs of DC) This is a wonderful, basic primer for non-accountants. The explanation of the handling of basic business transactions is quite detailed and well explained.
If you are a financial professional, skip the introductory accounting chapters and go right to the Quickbooks-specific information. Most of what you need will be there, and easily found. Start by reading the information on making an accountant's copy of the books ... before you do anything else.
Great Reference Book by .. Mrs. A. Landman (Australia) This book is a great help and is written in plain english and so is easy to understand so you can get on with operating quickbooks.
This book covered what I needed. by .. M. Becton (Washington, dc United States) I was starting from scratch having never used Quickbooks before. I also bought Quickbooks Pro official guide (sold by Quicken), but the Dummies book got me through most of what I needed. Even though neither book is written for Quickbooks for Mac, it's similar enough to get you through. For a small store-owner, these two books combined are pretty much all you need to produce your balance sheet for your CPA.
I would not buy this book again by .. Steven C. Counts () It never gets around to telling you what to do. You read way too much accounting stuff and then when you say to yourself, "okay I want to do that," there are no instuctions on how to do it. NUTS. Very frustrating!
Steve Counts
Great book for dummies by .. JACCAL (Asheville, NC USA) I actually ordered the book prior to ordering the program to be sure this was the type program we wanted. The book is simple and straight forward and certainly makes learning a new program simpler. Would definitely recommend only for Quickbooks Pro program only. You’ll never find a smarter way to get up to speed with Visual Studio 2008! Customer reviews Decent Overview but Light On Details by .. EmbeddedFlyer (Seattle, WA United States) Many people like the style of the "Dummies" books, but most will find this one tries to cover too much. It aspires to be the Swiss Army Knife of anything you could want to do with Visual Studio but that would take 5000 pages so it falls well short.
VS 2008 for Dummies is arranged into 7 "mini books" (not 6 as the cover artwork here on Amazon shows). And while each book has some great information, it typically covers too little to do much real development. Overall, it's biased towards web development (asp.net) using databases but also includes desktop applications, smart phone apps, deployment, unit testing, extending Visual Studio, etc. Unfortunately, unless you just want an overview, most of the mini-book topics really needs its own book.
There's a reason most beginning books on say just C# or Visual Basic are around 1000 pages. This book tries to cover both languages in only 163 pages.
Trying to cover so much information with relatively few pages creates problems. For example, Book 5 is titled Coding. Likely to save space, C# and Visual Basic examples and descriptions are intermixed on nearly every page. So the C# programmer is confused by all the Visual Basic examples and text, and visa versa. It's far from ideal unless you really do want to learn two complex programming languages at once, which seems like a bad idea for a beginning programmer buying an intro "Dummy" book.
So few pages per topic means a lot of important things are not covered at all. If you want to go much past useless "Hello World!" applications, a lot of what you'll likely need is just plain missing--i.e. basic file I/O using FileStream, ReadStream, etc. Many windows forms controls and other common .NET resources are also not covered.
I can imagine a few sorts of people for who might want to buy this book. The first is someone who wants an overview of the capabilities of VS 2008 but doesn't need to actually develop anything. An example might be someone managing a group of developers using VS 2008.
Another target audience might be experienced developers coming from a different or older development environment (such as Linux/Eclipse, VB 6.0, etc.) who only want to get up to speed on VS 2008. They would still likeley need to know (or buy another book on) the current .NET framework, however.
If someone just wants to play around and develop a few "Hello World!" examples, this book will get them there. In the "Dummies" tradition, it holds your hand fairly well through the basics.
If you're the sort of person who likes to read 2 or 3 different books on the same topic, this book may also prove useful. Visual Studio 2008 is a very complex product and this book presents some good information I've not seen elsewhere. And it presents information found in other books in new ways.
If you want to do some serious application or web development you either already need to know what you're doing, or you'll almost certainly need another book that covers your particular development area in more detail. This book will not, for example, teach you object oriented programming, or the full syntax of Visual Basic, ASP.NET or C#. It also doesn't cover the .NET framework and libraries in sufficient detail to do much more than play around.
In summary it's a useful overview, but unless that's all you need, you're probably better off with a book that targets the particular area of Visual Studio development you're most interested in. Many beginning books on C#, Visual Basic, ASP.NET, etc. do a good job of also covering Visual Studio 2008. So if you only want to buy one book, this might not be the best choice.
Good for first overview by .. Rosemary (Brazil) This book is good for a first overview of what and how do to with VS 2008.
The reader should have minimum programming skils, not a dummie at all.
Best Buy To Make! by .. R. A. Super (North Carolina) This book has been a great reference and learning aid. From start to finish it gives you a great insight of Visual Studio 2008 and the versatility of this program. There are many step by step examples of the many uses of Visual Studio 2008 as well as many tips and web site references. From building application programs (such as smart client and web applications) to accessing data(by using XML or SQL Server) this is a great reference for any programmer. I would strongly suggest that this book become a part of any programmers library.
A Must Have... by .. schopp () This is exactly what you need to get started with Visual Studio 2008. Whether you are a novice programmer or an experienced developer this book has something for you. It is a very easy read and has a basic step by step approach throughout. For anyone interested in programming with Visual Studio 2008 or if you just want a good reference guide, I would highly recommend this book.
Great introduction for Visual Studio newbies by .. Mark (Colorado, US) I haven't read the entire book yet, but my initial impressions are that it is an excellent beginning book for Visual Studio 2008. It also touches on some topics not immediately related to Visual Studio, such as modern programming practices, which I found valuable as a junior programmer.
If you are a veteran Visual Studio user, this book is probably too basic for you.
Most of the chapters are overviews, rather than in-depth coverage of any one topic. However, the content is very practical and concise, and contains a lot more useful information per chapter than some more poorly written books would.
From what I can tell, this book is very similar to the previous edition for Visual Studio 2005, with much of the same text. This new version includes mostly the same chapters, with a few new chapters on new features - notably AJAX and LINQ. The new JavaScript debugging does not appear to be covered, which would have been nice.
The new book is missing a few chapters that were in the 2005 edition - one on SQL Server Reporting Services and another one on Using Enterprise Library.
The omission of Reporting Services is unfortunate, since that is a popular alternative to Crystal Reports. (The 2008 edition still has the Crystal Reports chapter that the 2005 book had.) However, if you are going to use Reporting Services you'll probably get a separate book for that anyway. And perhaps the RS chapter was left out of this 2008 book in anticipation of SQL Server 2008 (scheduled for release later in 2008).
All in all, this is an excellent overview and introduction to Visual Studio 2008. If you have a little .NET programming experience and want to learn more about the basics of Visual Studio development, this book is for you.
