Product Description As the current recession ends, many workers will not be returning to the jobs they once held--those jobs are gone. In The New Division of Labor, Frank Levy and Richard Murnane show how computers are changing the employment landscape and how the right kinds of education can ease the transition to the new job market. The book tells stories of people at work--a high-end financial advisor, a customer service representative, a pair of successful chefs, a cardiologist, an automotive mechanic, the author Victor Hugo, floor traders in a London financial exchange. The authors merge these stories with insights from cognitive science, computer science, and economics to show how computers are enhancing productivity in many jobs even as they eliminate other jobs--both directly and by sending work offshore. At greatest risk are jobs that can be expressed in programmable rules--blue collar, clerical, and similar work that requires moderate skills and used to pay middle-class wages. The loss of these jobs leaves a growing division between those who can and cannot earn a good living in the computerized economy. Left unchecked, the division threatens the nation's democratic institutions. The nation's challenge is to recognize this division and to prepare the population for the high-wage/high-skilled jobs that are rapidly growing in number--jobs involving extensive problem solving and interpersonal communication. Using detailed examples--a second grade classroom, an IBM managerial training program, Cisco Networking Academies--the authors describe how these skills can be taught and how our adjustment to the computerized workplace can begin in earnest. Customer reviews Spencer Knipe's Review of Levy and Murnane's The New Division of Labor: How Computers Are Creating the Next Job Market by .. Arthur M. Diamond, Jr. (Omaha, NE USA) Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3PS3R2XMX03IC Spencer Knipe's review was made as part of a critical review assignment for the Fall 2008 Honors Colloquium on Creative Destruction at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, taught by Art Diamond. (The course syllabus stated that part of the critical review assignment consisted of the making of a video recording of the review, and the posting of the review to Amazon.)
Best book on workforce in a long time. by .. Christopher L. Bergstrom (Providence, Rhode Island) If you only read one book this year, read this book. It will change the way you think about work, education and the global economy. Murnane and Levy ask two fundamental questions: What do computers do better than people? (A: rules-based thinking) What do people do better than computers? (A: pattern recognition)
Much of the work of the industrial economy was rules-based, both on the assembly line and in the manager's office. Most of the work in the innovation economy is based on pattern recognition, including what Murnane and Levy call expert thinking and complex communication. Their research shows that these are the skills for which demand is growing in the economy at all rungs of the job ladder.
I've found their argument so compelling that I have purchased copies of the book for most of the top policy-makers in my home state of Rhode Island. The ideas in the book are starting to shape the discussion of school reform and workforce development here. In particular, we are concerned that our school system, like those in every other state, is still producing labor for a rules-based industrial economy that no longer exists. While it's possible to absorb rules-based thinking from a book or a lecture, it's difficult to teach pattern recognition skills in a pure classroom setting. You learn to recognize patterns by actually doing it the company of someone who is already very good at it. It's the essence of good experiential learning and mentoring, which can no longer be thought of as a luxury in the education system. If we want to produce the workforce we need for an innovation economy, we'll need to make experiential learning a part of every K-12 and college experience.
A most insightful analysis of the historical labor data. by .. Gaetan Lion () This is a very short and easy to read book. Yet, it is very informative and insightful. I have read many books covering the same theme written by Peter Drucker, John Naisbitt, Robert Reich, and Lester Thurow among other visionaries and economists. This one is the best on the subject for two reasons. The two authors studied the historical data much more extensively than the others. Also, this book is more focused. The authors did not get sidetracked by many related economic and political issues.
The authors extensive research dispels thoroughly the notion that computerization is bad for employment. To the contrary, computerization has increased both the quantity and quality of jobs.
The authors studied in detail labor trends over the past 40 years to support their conclusion. They uncovered the prescient work of Herbert Simon, who wrote an essay in the 1960s on the change in labor mix with the advent of technologies. The authors documented that for the most part Simon was correct. Due to computerization, the labor mix was going to change materially over the next several decades tilted towards a greater concentration of jobs associated with greater complexity in terms of critical thinking and judgment.
Just as Simon predicted, there is today a far greater percentage of the population involved in complex jobs associated with an intense critical thinking component. Such jobs include managers, professionals, technicians, and many sales related activities. By the same token, there is a far smaller percentage of the population engaged in blue collar routine work.
As mentioned, just as the quality of jobs (greater complexity) has improved immensely during the past several decades, so as the quantity. Between 1969 and 2000, the labor force grew by a staggering 63% from 83 million to 135 million. And, this surge in labor occurred during the most intense computerization era.
If we just observe the change in our own working lives, we can confirm that our job functions have changed dramatically for the better. We all use computers with increasingly powerful hardware that can handle increasingly complex software. In turn, the software replaces many of the routine components of our jobs. It also gives us quick access to a math level which would have been accessible only to PhDs not long ago. I don't think any of us would readily turn the clock back on computerization regarding our specific jobs. The authors will convince you the same is true at the macroeconomic level.
Academic, dry, and mildly digressive by .. Gilad L. Rosner (Brooklyn, NY) I saw the authors of this book interviewed on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer and immediately ordered it. I found a book that made its central points within 2-3 chapters, but it continued to illustrate those points ad nauseum in subsequent chapters. The examples in the book of methods and challenges of teaching expert thinking and complex communications are too detailed, in that the depth reached in the examples does a disservice to the key points of the book. Ironically, this book could be even shorter than its 157 pages.
The central points of this book are very basic, and anyone who works with technology for a living will find it almost too basic to bother with. One valuable part of the book deals with the trends of income and job availability as related to increases in the use of computing; it's nice to see that subject addressed succinctly. If I were teaching a class on IT or evolution in technology, I would assign select readings from this book to illustrate the connections between what people do better than computers and vice-versa, income, skill acquisition, and historical trends.
Effortless Learning by .. Richard E. Tuttle () A wonderful quick read, a painless injection of knowledge, letting those of us who never got beyond Econ 1-a understand the revolutionary impact of computers on American society. Not all a bed of roses -- we face the troublesome specter of our own version of Benjamin Disraelli's Victorian "two nations,"
with a growing gap between those at the bottom and the rest of society.

Shows readers how to present technical skills in reader-friendly language that employers demand. Over 180 pages of sample resumes targeted to high-tech jobs—from entry-level to executive. Customer reviews Common sense help by .. Charles R. Mascari (Medway, MA USA) If you haven't updated your resume in awhile this text offers a number of updated formats and ideas. It includes excellent common sense check lists and strategies. The key to this book is that it emphasizes that you are selling yourself in your cover letter and resume and offers clear ways to do so. Overall I found it easy to read and implement.
Quite a Few "Starters" by .. Dustin M. Waibel (San Jose, CA, USA) While I wouldn't say every resume in this book is top-notch, there are many of them that are quite well done. Two in my specific area of expertise gave me the "boost" to make my own resume look much better. I would say this book is definitely worth it if you find your resume not getting the response you had hoped for even though your skills are up-to-date.
There's also quite a lot of writing on how to position yourself better on your resume and in your cover letter. While a lot of this information is available on the Internet (and a few of the resources are outdated), it is handy to have it all together in this package as a "reinforcement."
Overall, worth a pickup if you feel stuck in your job hunt.

Great Resource by .. BluIgwana (Sacramento, CA USA) I found this to be more useful than other resume books because it was current AND was geared towards our industry. The reference samples and layout ideas gave me the "jump start" I needed.

Great book but the resources could be better organized by .. Sean R. Sullivan (Boston) So far this book has been very informative to read. the only issue I have with it (a very annoying issue) is the listing of companies and schools in the resource section. There are A TON of listings, but they are organized alphabetically by company name NOT by location!!!!
quote from book ( p.211)
"There may be a company that you'd really like to work for just down the street but, without the address listed [in this book], you'd never know that it was there"
Ok, so if I don't know the company exists, I'm probably not going to know the name of the company, so why list if alphabetically by company name??? What would be great was if there was a section for the U.S. and within that section, each state had it's own listing of companies. Same with schools. Your probably not going to be looking for a school by the name, its more about location. And if you do know the name of a school your interested in you probably already know its location. On the other hand, If you know the location you want to live in, you have to find out what schools/companies are there.
Anyway, I ended up taking a highlighter to the book and highlighting the cities that i was interest in, each with their own color.
This book is still great though, it has the listings of companies and schools, you just have to do a little extra work to scan through them all.
reference chapters alone make it well worth by .. M. Temelkov (Brooklyn, NY United States) This book is focused on the job-hunting process - demo reels, resume, interviewing, salary negotiation. I found the chapter on freelancing, as well as the reference sections (books to read, animation studios and post houses) most enlightening. The compilation of animation studios and post houses alone makes this book well worth the money.
I also recommend "Getting a Job in Computer Graphics, Real Advice from Reel People", which has a more extensive discussion on what skills one needs for the different career paths and has a lot of interviews with people from the industry. The two books complement each other very well.
Great Book for Research by .. Taylor (Okanagan Falls, BC Canada) This is a great book written by a solid guy in the business. All the research he has provided is a big boost for people wanting to know where the opportunities are within the animation and visual effects industry. If animation is what you want to do then this is book that will give you the goods to getting the gig. I own 2 Post-Secondary 3D Animation and Multimedia schools and this will be required reading for the students.
Best book for graduating CG students by .. Brian P (Chicago, IL) This book would benefit anyone who is thinking about getting into the computer animation field. Just the list of all the production and game companies is worth the price of the book. As a graduate of a computer animation school, there were many tips and suggestions that I never learned in school and that everyone would benefit from. This is a MUST HAVE book!!!

Although such tomes have their place, IT is a different world than, for example, sales or factory work, with particular nuances that have to be addressed, expecially with certifications on a resume and so forth. Lindain (Yonkers, NY United States) -The title of the book say's " Computer Science Resumes and Job-Finding Guide" but it also says, " A winning approach for information technology job candidate." Product Description Why do you want this job? Why should I hire you? Why do you want to leave your current job? Do you have convincing answers ready for these important questions? Landing a good job is a competitive process and often the final decision is based on your performance at the interview. By following the advice of prominent career planning and human resource expert Peter Veruki, you'll know you have the right answers at your job interview. Customer reviews Pretty useful book that prepares well for job interview by .. FX (New York) This is actually an excellent book that acts as a starting point to prepare your interviews.
The early sections are a good framework to prepare a solid speech on why you're out there looking for a job, what your motivations are, what value you can bring etc.
The list of questions may seem boring but it's clearly an invitation to do your homework. Sit down and practice, practice and practice. This type of work isn't the kind of involvement your hear very frequently and I know very few people who have enough to actually do it.
This book will help you be prepared for pretty much any type of questions, as long as you put down the required practice hours. Just zipping through it once or twice will do you no good. It'll give you the feeling that you're prepared when in fact your not. The only way to make the most of this very good book is to actually practice every question aloud, in front of someone else if you have to.
This is an excellent preparation tool, that you should acquire early in your job search quest, as glancing over it won't unleash the power it contains.
Helped get me a new job. by .. Ronald L. Brooks (Sunny SoCal) Some of the answers they give are so full of @#%& that no one would believe them but just listening to potential questions gave me a chance to formulate my own answers to interview questions which landed me a job as a Deputy Program Manager with a 20% salary increase. This CD easily paid for itself.
Very Useful by .. Alicia () As an Executive Recruiter, I found this book to be quite helpful. I was able to see the potential in all the questions and not only from an interviewers point of view, but as a candidate. I made a list of "tough" and "my favorite" interview questions and email them to my candidates and clients. This way they are prepared. I also suggest to my candidates that they use the questions as a guideline to formulate thier own questions for the company. An interview works both ways. I recommend this book as a staple for recruiters, HR Managers, and candidates. It's best to over prepare, than under prepare.
I did not find this book to be very helpful. by .. () As the title suggests, the book lists the most common interview questions. If you have no idea what those questions are, then you might find the book somewhat helpful. Along with each question there is an example answer which usually does not apply to the reader. After each example answer there is a brief snippet about how you should try to to answer that type of question. Unfortunately, these snippets are far too brief to be of much help to the reader (some are a single sentence). If there were more emphasis put on how to answer the question, and less space given to the example answers, I think it would have been a more useful book. I suggest "the Unofficial Guide to Acing the Interview" by Michelle Tullier, published by Hungry Minds. This book will help you get into the proper frame of mind for your interview. It will also help you understand the employer's underlying concerns behind those tough interview questions. When you know why the employer is asking a question, you can form your best answer. Good luck!
some good questions by .. Haseeb (Tempe, AZ United States) This book has some good questions to practice before interviews, but don't pay much attention to the answers given. If one tries to tailor his answers to sound like the ones given, he will sound too much like he's reading from a script. Read the explanations of how your answer should be and then practice responding to the particular questions in front of a mirror or with someone posing as an interviewer. Other than the interesting questions, the other information is very basic and can be found in any book on interviewing. The explanations of what a good answer should sound like are ok but a bit too overly simplistic. For example, in the question about getting fired the author says that one should be honest and say that you've corrected the problem. In answering questions about getting fired, one needs to know how to say this. Otherwise, you will be setting yourself up for disaster. Also, I believe that the sample answers given are a mostly a waste. The answers given are way too specialized.

Customer reviews Too Basic for the medium to advanced reader by .. CmH () While this book was informative it appeared to be written to a grade school level and was too high level for my taste. If you want a basic taste of what Steve Jobs is about this will not satisfy your appetite. I would suggest other options. However, if you are looking to pass a good book on to your child to read to get an understanding of this individual this may be successful. Not sure.
Steve Jobs an Original Life by .. Super Reader (San Diego, CA) Suzan Wilson's book, Steve Jobs, Wizard of Apple Computer is an amazing read about an amazingly original man. Ms. Wilson's book tells Steve Jobs story in a most readable writing style. The reader is constantly made aware of Mr. Jobs climb from early teenage rebel to successful computer inventor. This finely researched book is an excellent read and would be a great addition to eveyone's library. Especially those of us- all of us who have computers! Buy it!
