Product Description This best-selling text by Patrick Carey uses the New Perspectives Series signature case-based, problem-solving approach to teach students how to create simple to advanced Web sites using HTML and XHTML. Customer reviews Is this "Introductory" plus more? by .. Charles Miller (Appleton WI) The Introductory edition of this book is a required text for a web development course I start in a couple weeks. If this "Comprehensive" edition contains all of the Introductory plus 250+ pages of additional info, I will buy it instead.
If it's different, then the instructor will not be pleased...
(I haven't seen this book. Rated it because Amazon asked me to.)
A very basic, but solid introduction for absolute beginners by .. Steward Willons () "HTML and XHTML" is my first exposure to the "New Perspectives" series, but I'm sure it won't be my last. I had a few years of web design experience, but I wanted to get into the programming side a little bit more, so I ended up taking a class and this was the textbook. I was pretty upset that I was being forced to buy an expensive book on a common subject like HTML where one can find a multitude of volumes for under $40. However, by the end of the class, I came to really appreciate the approach that this book takes.
First of all, if you are looking for a reference book, this is not it. This is a step-by-step book that teaches one basic concept per chapter with each idea being applied directly to the accompanying tutorial files downloadable from the publisher's website.
That said, if you're looking for something akin to an HTML classroom experience, this book allows you to teach yourself pretty effectively. I had the added benefit of an instructor to help me debug, but I could imagine working through the book successfully on my own without issue. The directions are very clear and aimed at the beginner. I've seen a lot of books that skip certain steps considered too basic to mention, but this book makes no assumptions.
Again, this is not a book for anyone already familiar with HTML, nor is it recommended as a reference or a refresher. You can spend much less money to get a good refresher book that doesn't cover so many basics in such detail. However, if you want a book that will hold your hand through the learning process, this is it.
I realize that most of the people buying this book will have no choice - it will be a required textbook for introductory web programming classes. I'm mostly just sharing my experience here. The book is expensive, but it IS worth it. I'm not sure if I'll hang on to mine forever, but it gave me a very solid knowledge of HTML fundamentals.

A godsend, at least for this writer of "clever" songs by .. Webley Webster (Hillsborough, NC USA) I write educational songs for a living, stuff in the vein of Schoolhouse Rock. I used to rely on online rhyming dictionaries until I found this book, which is about 20 times more thorough than any website I've found. This book has saved me countless hours and made my songs immeasurably better. I love this book!
Simply the best by .. skeeterville (Haslett, MI United States) I teach a college course in songwriting, and in preparing to teach the course did an extensive review of many rhythming dictionaries. This one is by far the best, for the reasons other reviewers have stated.
If you buy one rhyming dictionary, make it this one. It's the one I use.
A review and a few other recommendations by .. T. Bachman (Victoria, BC) Hi
It has been my good fortune to songwrite with many of the world's greatest songwriters, and to have had a bit of commercial success. So, for what it's worth, I offer the following review of this dictionary, plus a few other recommendations for aspiring lyricists and songwriters.
I own eight or nine rhyming dictionaries, and am constantly on the lookout for others, and basically, they all pretty much suck compared to this one. You certainly don't need any of them but this one, and I am continually surprised when browsing through bookshops to see many of those other lousy books on the shelves, but not Sue Young's excellent reference book. I don't know what the explanation for that is, but whatever it is, it has nothing to do with quality. If something has superceded it, I don't know about it.
Young's book has four main strengths which put it above the pack:
1.) It simply has a greater number of rhyming words than other dictionaries;
2.) It includes rhyming phrases, e.g., when you go to look for rhymes for "ground" you will find (amongst single words) phrases like "merry go round", "lost and found", etc. This feature is a valuable rarity.
3.) It arranges the rhyming options under each suffix in groups according to numbers of syllables: first there are the single syllable options, then the two syllable options, and so on. Believe it or not, I have a number of rhyming dictionaries which instead list options in alphabetical order (mixing up one, two, three, and four syllable options), obviously a cumbersome and time-wasting arrangement.
4.) Unlike those found in most other dictionaries, Young's rhyming lists include slang words/phrases, contractions, acronyms, obscenities, abbreviations, etc. Beat poets to Broadway lyricists to Ogden Nash humourists to rock writers will all appreciate these.
Perhaps I might also add that if you are an aspiring songwriter who wishes to enjoy commercial success (i.e., getting on the radio in whatever genre, or in broadway shows, etc.), Young's book could help form a kind of "starter reference package". The components would include:
1.) The New Comprehensive American Rhyming Dictionary by Sue Young
2.) Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus by Barbara Ann Kipfer (this is the best one out there).
3.) Any or all of the Sheila Davis lyric writing books, especially, "Successful Lyric Writing: A Step-by-Step Course and Workbook". (Davis' books are clinical and mechanical, but you need to know song mechanics in order to be a consistently successful songwriter. Her books are really good for this, though won't be appreciated by those certain that each aspect of a song is dictated by heavenly muses rather than largely being the product of conscious and unconscious mental effort).
4.) If you would like an in-depth, "artistic" perspective on songwriting by a successful songwriter, add to this list the Jimmy Webb book, "Tunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting". (This one isn't necessary, it just may be of interest to some people).
I should add that most of the other "How to Write a Song!" type books out there are total garbage, so I wouldn't even bother with them.
But by far the best thing aspiring songwriters can do is deconstruct their own favourite songs to see why and how they work, and then incorporate what they discover into their own catalogue of creative knowledge.
Anyway, bravo to Sue Young for coming up with the best rhyming dictionary out there.
I hope this review has helped someone. Good luck.

Product Description Updated to teach the most current XML standards, this book uses real-world case studies and a practical, step-by-step approach to teach XML. It provides extensive coverage of DTDs, namespaces, schemas, Cascading Style Sheets, XSLT, XPath, and programming with the WSC document object model. Customer reviews Buy another XML textbook by .. R. Polczynski (Chicago, IL) This is not a very good book to learn XML as a student. As others have found, the concept explanations are difficult to understand at first, you have to reread the sections several times to gain some understanding.
Also, some of the case problems require you to do something that wasn't covered in the chapter, making you spend needless time trying to figure out why you're not getting the correct result. In some cases, the examples shown in the chapter were used in the case problems, and the solution ended in an error message. Even some of the solutions provided to the instructor didn't work correctly.
All-in-all, a very poor, time-wasting textbook. As another reviewer put it, the author and publisher should be embarassed for producing this awful excuse for a textbook.
Horrible book by .. S. Purro (Providence, RI) This is by far the worst book I have ever utilized as a student. The concept explanations are cryptic, the examples are poor, and many of the case problems require you to perform tasks that were not even covered in the tutorial section, and offer no clues whatsoever.
The authors should be embarassed for producing this horrid excuse for a textbook.
Decent tutorials, very poor explanations, editing, and reference by .. L. Anderson (California United States) To be fair, I am not a fan of the Thompson Course Technology books in general. But this is the first one that actually drove me to write a negative review to spare some innocent XML programmer-to-be the confusion this book will likely cause.
Our local community college unfortunately requires this text (a fair percentage of the classes seem to use Course Technology books because of the pre-fab quizzes, Powerpoints, and online supplements available to the instructors who can't be bothered to make their own).
The good: The Chapters are called "Tutorials" and in general, if you can read and copy the tutorials line for line, you will be able to get them to validate. However, you probably won't understand why in many cases.
The ugly: Like most of the Course Technology textbooks I've seen, there are significant typos and the explanations are very poor and awkward. There is little or no rigor in defining terms, the author often uses a tangential example as an adequate explanation for the entire concept.
Many explanations are as clear as mud. Case in point p. 199 (which is only partially understandable to me because I've taken a few computer classes (including C++ object oriented programming) and the concept of scope is familiar to me, even if the word is never mentioned here):
"In XML Schema, any element or attribute that is declared globally has to be entered as a qualified name in the instance document. The reason is that global elements and attributes are added to the target namespace, while local objects are not. Local objects are interpreted based on the namespace affiliation of the object in which they're nested. Because global objects are attached to the namespace, they have to be qualified in the instance document with a namespace prefix. The target namespace applies the document validation through the qualified elements in the instance document using them as the starting points for the validation process. You can't go down the hierarchy and validate only the local elements and attributes."
And that was a relatively clear passage. Even if you understand the concept, you are unlikely to get the syntax exactly correct. This book has singlehandedly caused me to consider a campaign to our department dean to stop using Course Technology books, and search for a decent textbook substitute. This book is of little use in class, and will be even less useful as a handy reference.

Carol () It would have been nice to know the print in this book is exceptionally small since I purchased it as a gift for my 94 year old aunt. She doesn't need large print, but has some difficulty with exceptionally small print. The content is very good, but it is also hard to hold open without breaking the binding.

Overall to a beginer it was a good well written book that you can actually learn from without the aid of lecture.
Computer Concepts Book easy to follow by .. Catfish (LA, CA) The authors do an excellent job of laying out basic computer concepts in easy format. Would recommend it. The other books on special software was not explaining the basics to me. I guess I expected too much.

It feels like I am back in school again! WOW! by .. Gerald Teigrob (Saskatoon, SK, CANADA) I just purchased this book three weeks ago and I must say it is the most thorough and solid books I have ever used. I first heard of these books through CDI College when I was doing some upgrading of my Office skills last June, and have since taken a real interest in learning more about how Access 2002 operates. From the tutorials to the lab assigments and throughout this book, it can only enhance your skills in this once intimidating database program. I have used the Step by Step Access book as well but this Comprehensive Access 2002 takes the cake! Thanks for all your efforst, New Perspectives! Not only would I recommend this book to ANYONE interested in upgrading their office programs skills, but I plan to now purchase the rest of the Office XP series not only for my own upgrading studies but to help me in my Office Specialist plans as well. Thanks for such a wonderful and thorough book!
Great tutorials! Won't teach you everything ... but almost. by .. J. Osborn (Sacramento, Ca) The structure of this book is extremely intuitive for introducing and instructing new users to MS Access 2002. The tutorials are realistic and complete, allowing you to work on multiple databases with distinct purposes for fictitious companies. I found it to be complete and thorough. This book goes well with one of the many publications on DB theory and design.

Great! by .. Infinatee (Los Angeles, CA USA) Everything worked out great! The order was sent in timely manner and was in great condition as stated.
Accurate description and Fast shipping by .. novamba () The seller represented this product very well. The description given was very accurate, which is something I don't find often with other sellers. I asked for expedited shipping after another seller failed to deliver my order after 1 month of waiting. This seller sent an email the day the book was shipped and the package arrived in no time. I would definitely use the seller again in the future.
good service by .. Christine Kester () The book was in the condition listed and mailed right away. Very good service!
Access 2003 by .. C. Hutcheson (USA) New Perspectives on MS Office Access 2003 is excellent. Access is a complex program and this book presents each section in a logical, well-explained way. I am most impressed with the exercises. They provide in depth, step-by-step lessons with plenty of screen shots. There is no "hunt and peck" searching for the buttons and no question about what to click next. The reviews and the case projects at the end of each chapter provide additional practice. All the practical, hands on work is a great advantage and so far it is all error-free.
I highly recommend this book!

Product Description This second edition from the New Perspectives series provides comprehensive, step-by-step instruction on coding Web pages from scratch using HTML, XHTML, and XML. Offering new case problems, tutorials, and a new appendix on Web accessibility and Section 508 compliance, this text keeps students up to date on the latest in coding Web pages. Customer reviews A Typical Course Technology book -- Skip It!!! by .. WebMaven (Chicago, IL USA) This is a typical course technology book with sections that go on forever leaving the students to wonder about what they just created and how could they ever do it on their own. Do your students a favor and skip this book.
An obvious retrofit by .. Alan Berman (Southern California) What originally attracted me to this text was that the code examples use valid XHTML. Unfortunately, the book is obviously a rewrite of an older book written with 1995-era design and structure approaches. Formatting attributes within the HTML tags have merely been replaced by inline styles, defeating the purpose of having a style sheet in the first place. Not until Tutorial 7 is there an external style sheet. There is even a chapter on how to design a site with tables; i.e., the old school way, and one can sense the author's comfort throughout that chapter. While it's good to be familiar with that approach, since one will run into such sites and have to work with them, to have such a large portion of the text devoted to it seems inappropriate in 2006 (this edition's printing). When HTML elements are employed in a modern fashion, there is some faltering, such as the label tag for an input element being followed by a break tag instead of setting its display property to block in the stylesheet, thus requiring as many break tags as there are labels. And as with many of the Course Technology books, the page numbers restart with each major section: the HTML section ends at HTML 578, then there are some additional cases (HTML ADD 1, HTML ADD 2, etc), then XML ends at XML 224, then there are appendices HTML A1 through HTML J16, then an XML appendix, then Ref 1 through 27 (reference section). At least the index indicates both the HTML and XML sections. One could complete this very thick book and be an expert at creating web sites the way we used to do it in the mid-nineties, the only enhancement being that the sites would be valid. I do think that many of the exercises could be reworked to be quite valuable, and I should mention that much of the instructional text is well done. The book is printed on very thin paper, as are many of the Course textbooks, but there is color throughout. I would not recommend this text to anyone considering adopting it as a class text.
Excellent HTML etc Textbook by .. David Sadler (GRAYSLAKE, IL United States) One of the best books on the subject I've encountered in the last thirteen years of working with the internet. The tutorials are excellent - in that they appeared to be well debugged prior to publication. They do an excellent job in preparing a student for any of the four cases found at the end of each section. The only weakness encountered was that there was no comprehensive reference table of tags and associated attributes.
