Fast and Easy Meal Ideas 5 by .. Mom of Sons (Buffalo, NY)
Crockpot cooking is such a lifesaver for busy families. Don't you feel smug all day, knowing your dinner is cooking on the counter at home? It's a great feeling! These recipes are a cut above the usual crockpot food but still fast and easy family fare. They rely on fresh high quality ingredients and take a few easy extra steps (i.e., broiling the chicken for 2-3 minutes before you put it in the crockpot) that make the food more appetizing. I've tried Red Cooked Chicken (twice!) and Coq au Vin, and have many other recipes I'm going to try. A very good new cookbook.

Imaginative and delicious 4 by .. H. Grove (Maryland, USA)
Due to the slow, moist, enclosed, long-term cooking method the slow cooker uses, recipes turn out a bit differently than they do on the stove. Flavors can blend together in odd ways, and spices & herbs in particular can come out tasting differently. Many foods don't taste as good if you can't separate out the flavors a bit; you have to have the right recipes to truly enjoy slow cooker food.

Author Ellen Brown succeeds at this in two ways. First, she knows how to get just the right combination of flavors. Second, she knows how to combine the slow-cooked contents of the crockpot with other ingredients so that many of her recipes contain the varied flavors of non-crockpot cooking.

There's only one potential problem with this. Many of her recipes use the crockpot simply as one tool in the process of making a dish. On the one hand this is great---the fact that she isn't trying to achieve everything in that one appliance is what keeps many of these recipes vibrant and delicious. On the other hand, if your entire reason for wanting to use the crockpot is the ability to toss stuff in and forget about it until dinner time, then have only the one item to clean, this can defeat the purpose.

Personally I agree with her approach to slow cooker cooking. Most of these recipes are still easier and less attention-intensive than their regular counterparts, and her take on things is what makes these recipes more delicious than many other slow-cooker recipes.

Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking 4 by .. Jane M. Ritter (Denver, CO)
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking is great. I was determined to learn the basics of slow cooking and take advantage of my new slow cooker, but was at a loss as to where to start. The Idiot's Guide not only has some great recipes - both basics and unusual - but lots and lots of general tips that can be applied to other recipes. I really like that element because I can only follow recipes for so long before my brain starts to wander and I want to do my own thing. Knowing what works and doesn't work in general in slow cookers is invaluable.

Easy to read and understand 5 by .. Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, Illinois, USA)
I've always found the Complete Idiot's Guides to be a mixed-bag; some I liked and some I didn't. This one, I liked very much! This book claims to have over 220 recipes, and I believe it, there are too many to count. First off, the book is organized into seven sections - 1) A Fast Course in Slow Cooking (a good quick start), 2) Enticing Appetizers, 3) Satisfying Soups, 4) Stews to Savor, 5) Crock Around the Clock (main courses), 6) Healthful but Homey (seafoods, vegetarian and others), and 7) Grand Finales (desserts). Each of the recipes comes complete with estimates on preparation and cooking time plus number of servings, list of ingredients, step-by-step directions, and some extra little hints and warnings.

My wife and I found this to be a nice book, with easy to read and understand instructions. So far, we have tried to Chicken Paprikash, and Short Ribs with Rosemary - both of which were excellent. So, if you are also on the go, and want to use some slow cooking to save time, then get this book!

Idiot's guide to the religios idiot! 1 by .. B. L. Sears (Charleston, WV USA)
I am not a baha'i but I have read on this religion much, and know that babism is not a sect of Islam. I don't know that much about eastern religions, but I bet they've made mistakes on those to. And what would a priest and a village Idiot know about other religions any way.

Good reference book 5 by .. B. Malave (Florida)
It does not go overly in depth with each religion nor does it present many alternative views on each religion however it does what it is supposed to do. This is a beginner's book to understanding some basic concepts within some of the Major world religions. Rituals and customs are briefly explained as well as core beliefs are outlined. This is a good book for anyone who is just getting into studying world religions and provides a good foundation as a quick reference book when having any sort of discussion with a person of faith. It also gives some tips on how one should approach a conversation with someone of a different faith. Overall very good for an entry level aspiring biblical scholar or anyone who has an interest in religion in general.

Religiously Enlightening 4 by .. E. Fischer (Saco, ME USA)
This book is much more user friendly than Religion for Dummies. It provides great information on the fundamentals and differences of not only the major religions of the world, but also alternative religions. Very interesting reading.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to World Religions 5 by .. K. Spaulding (south carolina)
My daughter's World Religion instructor recommended this book as an addition to the required text. It has short no-nonsense descriptions and is easy to use. Great price, too!

Good overview 4 by .. K. Matthews (Sugar Land, Texas USA)
This is an excellent book which gives a general overview of major world religions and some minor ones. It reviews several religious practices without judging them and would be beneficial to someone trying to better understand the background culture of certain region. I doesn't cover much depth, so it should be considered an introductory volume.

Hope this helps 5 by .. Fosbender ()
I purchased this for my daughter who is taking music theory in college in hopes it's explanations help provide insight when needed. She said she has used it for this purpose a few times and appreciates having it at hand.

The best on the subject!! 5 by .. Hector Escobar Gomez (manizales, colombia)
I also was a little concerned about the title since i don't consider my self as an "idiot" in music, but the autor gives you the information so easy to understand and so complete that you may feel more or less like a child (not an idiot)... it's fantastic!!. This book is for everyone, and i mean for any kind of professions; tells everybody how to teach in a manner to reach the goal without pain, something that's very hard to do.
Congratulations, i think this is the very best on the subject... easy to read, concise, complete, and cheap for all that it gives!!

Music Theory - The Complete Idiot's Guige to 2nd Edition 5 by .. Anne M. Mulligan (Rising Sun,, Md United States)
This is the second copy of this book I have bought. My youngest son got it first and uses it in conjuction with his private classes in viola. Now my oldest son has got his copy. He is self taught and finds this theory book to be of great help.

Really Easy to Understand Book 5 by .. Sarah H. Martin (Acworth, GA)
My husband has been playing guitar at a pretty beginner level off and on for years. He really wanted to get more knowledge on music theory. A friend recommended this book to him. It has been wonderful. It has really improved his guitar playing and song writing. It explains everything very clearly and in depth. He would definitely recommend this to all beginners.

Well worth the money 5 by .. M. S. Barnum (North Carolina, USA)
I have to admit I was reluctant to buy this book, because of its title. Never mind the title--it's well written. You don't have to be a complete idiot to understand this book; in fact, you shouldn't be. The author assumes you can think, but that you're coming in pretty close to the ground floor on knowing anything about the topic. I'm almost finished with the book, and I'm very happy I bought it.

By the way, I'm a musician, but with little or no theory background except what I've absorbed accidentally. This book has been really helpful in filling in the large gaps in my musical education.

Lack of respect for both readers of the authors themselves. 1 by .. Avantel (Lostland)
This book truly stands to the series name "Idiot's guides" by being full of extremely basic advice. These authors inform the readers that there exits publics transportation services such as subways and buses as good options to save money. Actually, this advice is not for an idiot but for someone who's been isolated from the world forever. Besides, the advice is only applicable to big cities, and even in those cities there are limitations. USA is basically made for car owners.

Want to compare pros and cons of buying vs building a house? You'd need to get much advice on whom to approach, how to tell good house builders from bad ones, what to do in case of scams, builder's associations to approach, and several more facts. Yet, these authors will only tell you in a long whole page that building a house has the advantage of being made as you want it, while a used one was made according to the previous owner's tastes. They say that "hopefully" (in their own words) you'll get a good builder team. And so it's the rest of the book. "Hopefully" you'll find a good book on personal finance.

But as for this book, you won't learn almost anything about personal finance. All you'll get is a chit-chat talk that you can get from any neighbor, relative, friend, co-worker, etc. I well know that many people have serious communication problems and these simple talks are not so simple for them. If this is your case don't let these authors take advantage of you and seek a good book. The Dummie's series on personal finance is a good alternative. If you also want some charismatic and inspirational reading, my recommendation is Andrew Mathews' books.

There are many scammers out there, self-proclaimed financial advisers. This book's authors are some of them. I think the most famous of all is Suze Orman. They'll tell you ton of very interesting stories, but that's no way to learn about finances. You'd never finish hearing personal stories, yet you'd still need to learn much more. These writers normally focus too much in making their reading fun, actually using a rather juvenile language and these authors' style is particularly juvenile since they wanted to identify with rather young people; they did it too well. These kind of sloppy authors also spent too much time on encouraging readers to save. The topic on saving is quite simple and lets them fill their books. As important as saving is, it must only take a few pages in book. If you do have a problem with saving, you'd better get a full book on the topic.

The big problem with more effective books on finance is that you'll have to deal with more math and less entertaining readings, and judging from the many reviews giving 5 and 4 stars here, I realize that this is a big problem for many people who actually prefer to fool around (or areactually terribly ignorant).

The book has several annoying commentaries that I could put off with if it really were useful, but since it isn't the commentaries just add insult to injury. The authors say, for example, that only like 10% of people around 30 have reached the 5 qualities of adulthood: being financially independent, leaving off their parent's, being married, having children and a 5th one I don't remember. The world is full of people with severely unattended children. And the fact that you are wealthy and with a stable job doesn't imply that you are ready to have children either. I can even say that most middle class and rich parents spend most of their time shopping, watching TV and more personal fun than spending time with their children. And the same applies to being married if you don't work your relationships. Being realistic by being aware that marriage and children is not for you is more mature that making a conventional family, and being able to deal with the loneliness that come with that is definitively mature.

It's a shame that two people, supposedly certified in finance, couldn't make a barely comparable work that what the Dummie's writer did on personal finance.

Basic Guide a Good Start for the Young Adult 4 by .. Bill Manhart ()
Like all "Idiot" books I have read, this one has excellent organization. Technical jargon is kept to a minimum, and the conversational writing style moves along at a good pace. The level of user-friendliness makes the information instantly accessible and useful to young people who are concerned about their financial futures. The strategies are indeed suited to the age group in the title - 20s and 30s - because the strategies outlined are quite conservative. These will have limited use for people in their 40s or 50s who have suffered a devastating financial loss (such as foreclosure and bankruptcy)and are having to start over building for retirement. This book is just what it says. It provides a wealth of simple but crucial information, all for about the price of a movie ticket, with extra large popcorn and soda. Thumbs up!

So-so book. Get Suze Orman's instead. 3 by .. Kip (TX)
I bought this book and The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke. Skip this one and get Suze Orman's book instead. Both books are for people in their 20's or 30's, but Suze Orman's book covers much more material and many more options. The Idiot's Guide tells the same old story: budget, budget, budget, and is very light on details.

Too juvenile 2 by .. Valerie Filipowski (Auburn, Alabama)
I found this to be ridiculously juvenile. I skipped the first ten or so chapters because it provided absolutely no information that any person over the age of ten should know. I did however find the chapters on stock and mutual funds, etc to be very helpful. Not for someone over the age of fourteen.

Great Book Excellent Transaction 5 by .. Erik Lindqwister ()

An Excellent book for beginners! 5 by .. Ragnar Thorarensen (Kópavogur, Iceland)
I'm an MBA student and I'm taking a course in statistics. We don't have any book only powerpoint slides from the professor. I'm a beginner in statistics and was never good i math so I looked at Amazon.com for a book that could teach me in the simplest way how to get through the course. I have before bought Idiot's guide books and they are great. This statistic book fulfills my expectations and far more. I have learned so much that I'm beginning to like statistics! I'm not afraid of it. It's really fun and Bob the author is great in connecting the examples with our everyday life and he's also got great humor which makes the book more fun to study. There's every thing you need concerning statistics in this book. It's a best buy and I would not want to be without it.

FINALLY!!! 5 by .. A. Garcia (USA)
No mumbo jumbo or unnecessary jargon here. If you wanna get a solid foundation of statistics, this is your book. As an MBA student, I needed a book to help me understand my statistics course (some professors are unable to teach in plain English). The style is concise and clear and the examples very funny. I also like the exercises at the end of each chapter. The author usually gives 3 or 4 questions where you basically apply the formulas you just learnt in the chapter, and in the last question, once you feel comfortable with the formulas, you usually have to apply some logic to answer the question.

The probability chapters are also great, so there is no need to look at other probability books out there.

I totally recommend this book to anybody with an interest in statistics, specially for beginners, or as a reference for those who already know the basics.

Fantastic supplement to my Statistics course book 5 by .. Scott Ferrell (Long Beach, CA)
My textbook is called Statistics, Data Analysis, & Decision Modeling by James Evans, and I absolutely hate it. The writing is extremely technical and the subject matter is poorly handled. This Idiots Guide to Statistics has both great coverage of Statistics, but also gives information about Excel's relationship to Statistics that I desperately needed. I highly recommend this book.

Perfect for Getting the Idea of Statistics 5 by .. Andrea Derler (Ann Arbor, MI, USA)
If you need to gain a general idea of statistics with all the necessary terms, formulas and calculations, look no further! Compared with my statistics curriculum, it contains everything I need to know for my graduate curriculum. So, whilst learning about statistics by ways of a very easy-to-understand-but-not-patronizing language, I'm also having a LOT of fun. My days of studying statistics are interrupted by laughter and smiles throughout the book. The author is a comedian, apart from a great teacher. His examples go far beyond 'coin and dice' (yawn) and facilitate learning through down-to-earth thinking!

Statistics help 4 by .. Heather Buechel (lexington ky)
I am currently taking a biostats class. As with most other math text books, the text for this class is very dry and hard to read. I bought this book because I thought it may help me to understand the concepts better than the text - or at least make the text easier to follow, and it has been a great help.

Great information...thanks! 5 by .. KB (Redlands, CA USA)
Just great. Understandable. Complete. Each edition gets better--although I still like the humor in the 2nd edition better. Great teaching tool and great for all general project managers, which is almost everyone in business.

Excellent for beginners 4 by .. Middle-Aged Professor ()
The previous reviewer is being grossly unfair. The entire premise of the "Idiot's Guide" series is basic information for the beginner. To fault the book for repeating information found in business education classes is missing the point. For those who do not have a business education but find themselves leading a project -- the PTA fundraiser, the Boy Scout jamboree, or even their daughter's wedding -- the book presents a wealth of useful information.

So Basic! 1 by .. S. Ingerson ()
Ever taken a business course? Then you don't need this book!!! Only buy it you are required to.

Wish I'd had this book back in High School 5 by .. Gregory R. Hunter (Long Beach, MS USA)
I've always struggled with math. From grade school through college, math has clouded my academic life. I held my own in Geometry, but Algebra, Trig, and Calculus were like a 3-volume mystery with half the pages missing. It was all simply incomprehensible. It didn't "click" for me--made no sense. No math teacher could penetrate my thick skull.

I was a "C" math student in high school and college, mostly due to charity from my instructors. I really didn't deserve to pass. I just wrote math off as impossible and went on with my life. Now as a military retiree enjoying a second career as a technical instructor, I feel I should have at least some grasp of math. Is it too late for me? Am I too old? I thought so until I started reading this little book.

What a breath of fresh air! My high school and college experiences would have been MUCH less stressful if someone had explained Algebra to me the way this book has. The humor is silly--the jokes are beyond corny. Yet the informal tone completely deflates the menace of Algebra. Math texts always seemed sinister to me--as unknowable as a book of voodoo spells. By contrast, "The Complete Idiot's Guide..." is about as menacing as the funny papers. The author chats about Algebra topics and techniques the way I might chat about football scores--as though it's no big deal.

And it isn't a big deal. Once I cracked the cover, I was solving & graphing equations within a couple of hours. More importantly, I understood what I was doing and why. That was a totally new experience. I went through a third of the book in two days, and I correctly solved every practice problem. I can't wait to get to the rest of it. That's new too. I've never, EVER looked forward to a math lesson before. So should you buy this book? Maybe. It isn't for everybody.

If you are a skilled or even average math student, you probably don't need it. If you are a highly effective math teacher--ditto. However, if you are a math tutor or a teacher struggling with tough cases (guys like me, for example) you really need to see the author's angle on Algebra instruction. If you are a "weak swimmer" like me, you absolutely should buy a copy. If you have been out of school a long time and you need a quick refresher, this book's a natural. If your own kids are struggling with Algebra and you don't know how to help them, this is how to help them!

Like my title says: I sure wish I'd had this book when I was in High School.

All I needed 4 by .. reader ()
This book pretty much taught me everything I know about algebra, which is enough to pass a CLEP test. Good examples, clean explanations and balanced coverage of algebra concepts and topics. One criticism that I have is really more a matter of style points... while Mr. Kelley has obviously devoted much of his life to mathematics, he frequently writes negatively about it in what I feel is a blatant attempt to appeal to the likely demographic of reader for this book. Well, I don't like someone telling me how boring or lame a subject is, especially when I have to learn it.

Helped me pass my math placement test 5 by .. Mom of young gamer (Oregon)
This 45 year old mom was ready to go back to school but not ready to face Intermediate Algebra, a requirement (either pass the class or test above) for my degree program. I read, practiced and studied and tested above the requirement. So now, I won't have to face a math class and can go right into the science classes that more closely fit in with my degree program. There were a couple of items in the book that I may never completely understand or be able to memorize but so much of the book was fun and very easy to "get" right away. I have already taken both high school and college level algebra so I have some background but there is no way I could have passed this placement requirement without studying this book for about a month. This book is not for complete idiots but instead for people who think they have become an idiot in math due to lack of practice. Now, I look forward to helping my kids with Algebra when it come their time.

Excellent book 5 by .. Glenn Watson (Mooroolbark, Victoria Australia)
I never completed high school, but I work in certain forms of linear algebra all day in my job, but some of the more basic algebra tasks in the past have stumped me. I learnt what I needed to complete my job and nothing else.

I originally bought 'Algebra Demystified' but was getting confused fairly early on. I found the writing confusing, because they just told you "do this, do that", while with this book, I had quite a few lightbulb moments occur. He just didn't say "do this, do that" but the reasons for doing it. I bought this book along with a workbook from the dummies series, which gave you a chance to write and test out a lot of sample problems in the book. Good combination.

I have now bought the authors pre-calculus and calculus books based on how well this book read.

Excellent introduction to basic algebra 5 by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
Mathematical purists are opposed to injecting humor into teaching math, it is as if they simply want to pass their suffering on to subsequent generations. Unfortunately for their position, a spoonful of humor helps the mathematics go down. Kelley understands this very well, and while it is occasionally easy to consider the humor to be a bit childish or at best sophomoric, it does make this a better book.
The coverage is what one typically finds in beginning algebra courses.

*) Number fundamentals and basic properties such as the associative laws
*) Fractions and how to perform arithmetic on them
*) Variables and expressions
*) Solving linear equations
*) Solving linear inequalities
*) Solving systems of simultaneous linear equations
*) Matrices and operations on matrices
*) The fundamentals of polynomials
*) Factoring polynomials
*) Equations involving radicals
*) Quadratic equations and inequalities
*) The basics of functions
*) Graphing functions
*) Rational expressions and solving rational expressions
*) Interest, area, volume, distance and mixture problems

If you are in need of a book that will help you learn basic algebra and can handle the occasionally stupid humor, then this is the book for you.

Very Unhappy 1 by .. kahp ()
I was very disappointed in it. The pericope sections are just restatements with very simplistic explanations. It didn't open up the Bible for me in any way and I can't imagine making my Sunday School class suffer through it. I recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide Bible Study for Teens -- it is much more interesting and has more information to help open up the Bible. And you don't have to be a teen. I bought this version because I couldn't imagine having adults use a teen book. But the teen book is much more interesting, with so much more information. Good luck in your search for helpful Bible resources. I'd honestly skip this one, though.

who knew the bible was so entertaining 5 by .. A. Burns ()
I've been trying to read the bible for years but just could not get into it. This book is "the best of" the bible and actually makes it readable. And better yet, it's understandable! I love the sense of humor the writers have (of the guide not the bible itself) - I actually laughed out loud at one of the titles. This book truly does make reading the bible an enjoyable experience.

A Walk In the Garden of Knowledge 5 by .. Bettye J. Sullivan ()
Enjoyed the book. It was purchased for my husband and now is in the possession of our daughter who is thrilled with it.

Improv made easier 5 by .. Archer A. Jordan (Alexandria, VA USA)
A comprehensive aproach to improvising for a variety of styles. The Forewords are by famed trumpeter, Marvin Stamm and jazz educater Jamey Aebersold with praise for author, Michael Miller and that is high praise indeed from such eminent talents.

They Don't Make Idiots Like They Used To 5 by .. Fly By Light (Atlanta, Georgia)
This books covers a world of material on crafting rock/jazz/blues solos for less than the price of a music lesson. You need to have reasonable mastery of your instrument before tackling this book (playing scales, reading music, producing proper tone, etc.). The book will easily take a non-obsessed musician over a year to plow through and absorb fully if they do not have much background in improvisation or theory. The "Idiot" that masters the material would be an amazing idiot indeed. What makes this book stand out from others?

1) The amount of material covered: There are some gaps (like modes of the melodic minor scale), but this book does an incredibly good job of hitting important topics in comprehensive fashion. Its broad scope almost rivals an encyclopedia.
2) Clear and concise explanations: the book opts for clear explanations and illustrative examples, rather than giving technically perfect explanations. Other books deal with topics in exhaustive depth (Bert Ligon's jazz books and Mark Levine's Drop 2 book come to mind); this one presents the concepts and suggests their application, then leaves it to the student to explore.
3) Interviews - there are two very good interviews with pros from jazz and rock
4) Appendices - the appendices have some good scale charts that will be useful for reference and practice.
5) Lots of practice patterns
6) Advice that goes beyond the theory - theory is indispensible, but it doesn't equal music, any more than colors equal art. The real value in this book is the discussion of how to make solos interesting and effective. The advice in this realm is as useful to a reaasonably experienced improviser as it is to a beginner, and trancends all genres. Every solo can be analyzed through these concepts to find where room for improvement may be found.

This books has plenty to offer to the budding improviser. Do not be fooled by the bargain price or the title: it is not a half-hearted introduction or a quick fix. It is as jam-packed with information as any book on the subject could be. It will require time, practice and dedication to master the material in this book, but it will produce results if you do your part.

Because of the breadth of material covered, go elsewhere for depth (not a fault, just a fact). That might come in the form of a book on a specific topic or a music teacher. In fact, this book would probably be an excellent text to use with music lessons so that important topics can be identified and expanded, and bad habits can be avoided.

Great Beginner's Introduction to Mindfulness 5 by .. Christine Wylde (Seattle)
I like how clear and well written this book is. The exercises help illustrate what and how mindfulness practices can be immediately used in one's own life. It also takes some of the mystery out of it by giving hands on practices to try. As a psychotherapist who has studied and read other text on this issue I find this book to be one of the most accessible of those I have read so far. I believe many people, including my colleagues and clients, could benefit from reading this book.

An excellent guide for contemporary life 5 by .. Anne ()
This is a beautifully written, very thorough and helpful book for finding tranquility and truth in the midst of our crazy, multi-tasking, modern lives. The sequencing and pacing of the exercises and concepts are excellent, as are the extensive resource list and index. I know that I will repeatedly refer to various chapters of this book over time. Thank you to the authors for generously sharing their abundant wisdom, compassion, skills, stories, and ideas to enrich the lives of others.

Useful resource for clinician's and their clients! 5 by .. N. Farley (Seattle, WA)
As a long-time mental health counselor/psychotherapist who practices from an Existential-Buddhist perspective, this book is easy to read, explains concepts well, can be a very useful resource for clinicians; especially as a book to refer clients to who could benefit from mindfulness practice as part of their healing work. I'd highly recommend it!

Great Introduction to Mindfulness 5 by .. Dave (Seattle, WA USA)
This book provides a complete introduction to mindfulness, making a sometimes difficult and esoteric topic easy to understand. The reader will find practical ways to introduce mindfulness into their daily lives, as well as help with meditating. Although I had some idea of what mindfulness was before reading the book, I learned a lot of new things. I would highly recommend this book as a great introduction to mindfulness that carefully explains this complex buddhist concept in simple terms. Well written.
