Product Description This second edition will prove popular, with a gallery of over 500 colour photos, dates, value ranges, and other vital information about virtually every Breyer animal made to date, including special run models. It also gives the collector information on the hobby, the company, molds, and showing horses in contests. Customer reviews A must for any Breyer collector by .. Terri A. Gordon (Wisconsin) I have used each edition of this book as my Breyer Bible. It keeps getting better with each edition and is very well formatted. Lots of great information on the molds / models as well as up to date values.
And the photos are incredible. I wouldn't be caught without it!
very informative by .. Andrew M. Agnew (Ohio, USA) Describes everything I needed to find out about the Breyers. Sometimes it was a little difficult since I had the horses and had to search individual pages until found... no ID no. on horse, or some other method
Breyer Animal Collector's Guide, 5th Edition by .. Sharon (Crescent City, CA) There is a wealth of information on the various types of Breyers and great descriptions. However, many of the color photos are off, with a lot of orange tinting. You need to go by the written description rather than the actual photo. Also, I was extremely disappointed in the pricing. As an avid collector and owner of over 180 traditional Breyers, the prices are rather low. You could not use this book for insurance purposes or buying prices. I have seen many of the Breyers listed in the book go for much higher prices than what is quoted in this 5th edition. It is still a good reference book.
Must-have for the serious collector! by .. Sonia M. Schellenberg (Chicago Suburbs, USA) This goldmine of information is necessary for both the serious collector and for anyone with interest in the Breyer collectables. It's straightforward pictoral guide is easy to use and the fair market values are just that...fair. Don't shop for a Breyer without it!
Great Pictures! by .. Katy L. Bronson (Janesville, WI USA) Lots of great pictures, but values are off. I would not use this to determine the value of what I'm selling. The values are often less than what the going price is, and occasionally more than they're worth. Great pics and book to see what is out there nonetheless.

Product Description In addition to the discussion of period and style and the numerous illustrations found in most books on period furniture, this book covers other topics that are equally important to the collector: understanding the furniture trade, evaluating quality, investment potential, identifying period workmanship, the ins and outs of dealers, shows, and auctions, care and conservation, repair and restoration, documentation, insurance, problems of inheritance, and coping with the misrepresentation so often encountered in the market. The 400 black and white illustrations are finely detailed line drawings made from authentic pieces of furniture featured in the catalogs of some of the leading auction houses. No prices. REVIEW: This book is a thorough and complete single-volume encyclopedia featuring every department store special, every Barbie doll exclusive, and every Collector Series Barbie doll and fashion released since 1972. This edition includes over 75 dolls not seen in the previous edition and now features the enormously popular Silkstone Barbie Fashion Model Collection. Customer reviews Highly Recommended! by .. Deborah Abernethy (Atlanta, Georgia) Early American Furniture: A Practical Guide for Collectors by John Obbard is filled with information about all aspects of furniture from this period. Chapter one starts with an overview of the furniture trade, followed by understanding period and style, evaluation of quality, identifying period workmanship, and identifying fakes and frauds. Each type of furniture has its own chapter (wing chair, Windsor, chest of drawers, desk, highboy, etc.). There are many illustrations, but the only photographs are on the cover. With all of this information covered, one can sense that this book states concepts "straight to the point". For example, on page 64, there is a paragraph which states to look for a detached shoe or two part shoe and that this is something to note with old furniture. A beginner is not going to grasp that concept from the paragraph and illustration. Regardless, this is a good review source for the experienced person or a good outline for a beginner. I have spent three times the price of this book for many with less information.
Best Guide for the Collector by .. John McCool (Austin, TX) Whether you're a collector or would-be collector of american furniture, this is the single must-have book for you. If you are interested in Early American Furniture, read this by .. Laura Mazur (lemazur@aol.com) (London, England) Having been sent this book as a present by a friend in the US, I felt I must tell others just what a treasure trove it is. It has been written by someone who not only obviously loves his subject, but who has written a clear, easy-to-read amd well-illustrated guide for those of us who have developed an interest in early American furniture but who lacked expertise. It also tells you how to care for furniture. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Product Description After the release of Volume 1, many readers and collectors pointed out several pieces they possessed which were missing from the book. Although including each and every item issued to the American soldier is a near impossible goal, the author started making a list of what should included in a reprint. All chapters from volume 1 have been revised and updated (among others: uniforms, signal and medical equipment) and new sections have been added, including personal equipment, Stateside training, and the life of POWs in German camps. More than 1,000 new artefacts with detailed captions are featured in this completely revised new work. Volume 2 of the G.I. Collector's Guide provides a complete and unequaled source of American ground force documentation for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Customer reviews a great companion to the first volume by .. Jonathan Gawne (The great Northeast) If you have seen Vol. 1, then this is quite similar, just with different items. Vol. 1 has more equipment and uniform items, vol 2 has some mor esoteric things, and more small personal items. All photographed in wonderful color.
While this book is a must for collectors of WW2 US militaria, it is also a great color guide for modelers and wargamers.

Product Description This book includes virtually all knife manufacturers, both old and new: Chicago Cutlery, Holley, Belknap, Eagle, Remington, E.C. Simmons, Shapleigh, Winchester, Aerial, and Imperial, to name just a few. The guide presents a common sense system for 'total appraisal' using the RBR scales; overviews of all the major knife companies; notes on commemoratives, reproductions, and limited editions; knife clubs and organizations; numbering systems used by companies; and current collector values. More than 800 line drawings and an expanded full color photo gallery showcasing the various handle materials -- celluloid, wood, bone, abalone, ivory, metal, plastic, and more. 2002 values. AUTHORBIO: Roy Ritchie is a noted expert on knives, and provides certified appraisals of knives and collections, as well as assists insurance companies with appraisals and adjustment evaluations. He and co-author Ron Stewart published one of the earliest books for collectors, the Kentucky Knife Traders Manual. They went on to publish the bestselling Standard Knife Collector's Guide, and later books followed: Big Book of Pocket Knives, Cattaraugus Cutlery Company, and Standard Guide to Razors. AUTHORBIO: Ron Stewart is a noted expert on knives, and provides certified appraisals of knives and collections, as well as assists insurance companies with appraisals and adjustment evaluations. He and co-author Roy Ritchie published one of the earliest manuals for collectors, the Kentucky Knife Traders Manual. They went on to publish the bestselling Standard Knife Collector's Guide, then others like Big Book of Pocket Knives, Cattaraugus Cutlery Company, and Standard Guide to Razors. REVIEW: Standard Knife Collector's Guide: big, wide-ranging, and inexpensive. These factors have made this title one of the three or four most popular books in the knife business. With almost a hundred pages added to this edition, the new page count comes to nearly 800. The heart of this book is the extensive listing of major knife companies and brands, which provides many illustrated examples that apply the authors "RBR" system for determining a value of almost any brand of folding knife. -Knife World Customer reviews Pocket knife mania by .. Robert S. Henderson (Southlake, TX USA) I found a cigar box full of old pocket knives in my mother in laws attic. I wanted to learn more about them and what they might be worth. This book answered that question easily while also sparking some interest in acquiring other similar knives of value. I would recommend it or "Official Price guide to collector knives" by Price to anyone wanting to know more about pocket knives they might have.
What I didn't like about this book was the poor quality pictures and sketches for many of the knives, they were of copier type quality. But they were good enough for me to learn what I wanted to know.
Excellent overview and a great place to start by .. JM (Chicago, IL) Positives: Comprehensive overview of the various manufacturers. Good valuation system that gives direction on which brands are more desirable. Decent discussion of knife care. Good glossy color insert.
Cons: Does not discuss the history of various patterns(Stockman,Trapper, etc.), but this seems beyond the scope of the book (find an old copy of Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives...either the 3rd or 4th edition). A general overview of patterns and their intended use would be nice.
This book will get you headed in the right direction of knife collecting. This combined with the Bernard Levine book mentioned above is all you need unless you specialize in a brand. There are Case, Cattaraugus, etc... specific books. As to some other comments, I guess I knew this didn't cover fixed blade knives, but I guess it should be "The Standard Pocket Knife Collector's Guide."
A 'bible' of knife values and history. by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) The fifth updated edition of The Standard Knife Collector's Guide remains a 'must' pick for any who would regularly consult a 'bible' of knife values and history. Over seven hundred pages pack in details on major knife companies, issues, collectible ratings, current stampings and more, with small black and white photos and illustrations enhancing the book's reference value for collectors. It's a specialty item to be sure - but knife collecting is one of the most popular collector's items and so this book is sure to see ongoing interest for any collector library patron.

review by dealer / collector by .. Charles J. Skittino (Lake Villa, Illinois) Excellent in every way. The authors have incorporated years of common sense in their advice. The rating scale is a stroke of genius. Thank you.
Waste of money by .. Jim Anderson (Southern California) Other than proposing to be a knife price guide, this book has no information about knives, other than a very cursory overview, for someone who knows absolutely nothing about knives. The book fails miserably in its attempt to be an informative price guide. The concockted mathematical formula for determining a knife's value is devoid of reality. In the case of certain brands, such as "Case" and "Cattaraugus", the values are so far below real world values that the book is almost entertaining as a jest. Someone who wants to learn about knives and gain a feel for their values would best be served by getting a copy of Levine's 4th Edition. I wish I had read my own review before I purchased this book.

Customer reviews The "Bible"! by .. Joy Archer (Oro Valley, AZ) This book is simply the very BEST that is available for shell collectors.
I have many other books on shells but this is "The Bible" on shells!
Disappointing 1981 edition by .. C. Robinson (Atlanta, GA) I must admit I purchased this book because of the 5 star reviews. I'm sorry that Amazon no longer offers views of the inside of books because had I seen this one I wouldn't have purchased it. I got the 1981 version so maybe the 1989 version is a lot better and worthy of the 5 stars. I'm reviewing the 1981 edition and if any of the reviews are for that edition, I'm at a loss as to why the great reviews. The photos of the shells are taken against colored backgrounds in groups instead of individual photos and it gives the effect of a shell collector's own amateur photos, instead of high quality photography. The photos are not crisp and clear and the colors are muted. There are light reflections off the shells and shadows on the edges of the shells. The smaller shells are hard to see and distinctions cannot always be made between two shells that are similar. In addition, the colored backgrounds themselves are a distraction and often not contrasting enough to the shells, such as the photos of orange volutes against an orange background. Also, yellow is a poor choice for the background of any shell. At least brown backgrounds weren't used! It gives the impression that half the fun in making the book was in the colored backgrounds and how pretty it will look when as the pages are turned. It is by no means a large collection of shells, though there are some nice specimens.
An excellent general reference shell book. by .. () Not quite on the level of Compedium, but this is a nice general reference. Shells tend to be listed as often somewhat rarer than they actually are, but it's a minor complaint.
Beginner to Expert - A Must for the Seashell Collector by .. clowell @cwo.com (Sacramento, CA) I have been collecting seashells for over forty years and have used this book since 1982. Worth the Wait by .. Joe Abrams (New Jersey USA) Took a while to receive due to release issues, but once received, Book is great!
Precious Moments Collector by .. Scott's Mom (Seaford, NY United States) I think this book is a great way to keep track of my Precious Moments and give me a current value of each one. However, because values change from year to year, it could be a lot of work transferring them to a new book each year. I think every couple of years would be fine to keep track of what you have unless you purchase numerous figurines every year.
Useful but disappointing by .. P. Burton (Orlando, FL) This guide is an essential reference for any serious collector or anyone buying or selling Precious Moments figurines. The lack of serious competition will make sure this sells. However, there is little improvement in this 3rd edition over the 2006 second edition. The addition of the newer figurines and an update in pricing, which seems to average about 16% increase, are the main differences. There is also a size difference. The second edition was a handy 8.5" x 5.5" but the third ed is 11' x 8.5", which I believe is too large for a soft cover book. There is no new information about each piece that is not in the earlier version. It would have been nice to include the size of each item. There is an annoying change in the index that consolidates several previous entires into entries by series. For example, instead of separately listing the sugar town skating pond there is one listing for the series 'sugar town' with 18 page numbers.
Overall, I was disappointed in this guide and would recommend that anyone not needing information on the last 2 years figurines stays with the 2nd edition and awaits the 4th.
Bomm is a Bomb - really bad book - prices in fantasy-land! by .. Sheryl J. Williams () Just received this book in today's mail, and frankly, other than the pictures of the pieces, it is, in my opinion, not worth the paper it is printed on. There is NO secondary market except internet auctions for Precious Moments any more. This guide lists "Free Puppies," for example, as a value of $2,100 - they sell regularly on auction for $300 - $450, depending on whether or not they have a box. Last week, one with an original brown cardboard box (extremely unusual), went for just under $600 in mint condition - a beautiful piece. The rest of the "Original 21" are priced through the roof - some of them 10 times and higher prices than what reality is. There is a disclaimer in the book claiming that the prices vary from spot to spot, and they got this information from dealers and collectors around the country. I wish they would give credit to these so-called knowledgable people, and it would be nice to know who paid $2100 for "Puppies" and how many years ago that happened.
For the pictures, the guide is fine, but beyond that, DO NOT rely on it for accurate price information - even many of the suggested retail prices in the book are incorrect.
I give this one a thumbs-down. There is no secondary market to amount to anything in collectibles any more, in my opinion, and this book's prices just encourage disillusionment among collectors so they keep buying (or investing?) in pieces, hoping to make good money when they sell. It ain't gonna happen - there is a ton more merchandise out there than anyone ever guessed back 30 years ago at the beginning of this.
Buy what you like, like what you buy, and don't expect to put your kid through college when it's time to sell - you might not get back enough money to even pay the bookstore bill!
For what it's worth - my opinion!

Product Description Arguably of all the branches of the German armed forces in World War2, only one - the Kriegsmarine (or navy) - had the ability, ultimately, to bring Britain to defeat once the immediate threat of invasion after Dunkirk had receded. Whether it was the U-Boats in the Atlantic or the great capital ships, such as Bismarck or Tirpitz, in the North Atlantic, the Kriegsmarine had the ability, through its attacks on the all-important convoy system, to starve Britain into submission. However, of the Axis forces of the period, the Kriegsmarine is perhaps the least known. This is possibly a reflection in the undoubted interest in aircraft and aces or in the great tank land battles of the war. It is, perhaps, also a reflection of the fact that many of the U-Boat crews never returned to base, being sunk during operational duties, with the result that the great commanders were never able to tell their stories after the war. There was, moreover, the fact that, as far as Hitler was concerned, with the exception of the U-Boat arm, the Kriegsmarine never fully exploited the hardware that it had at its disposal with the result that the building program was curtailed and those sailors based on surface warships were transferred to land-based operations. In his third contribution to the highly successful 'Collector's Guide' series, noted collector and expert Chris Ailsby examines the wide range of equipment, uniforms, medals and awards specifically associated with the Kriegsmarine during World War 2. Alongside the detailed descriptions of the militaria being discussed are photographs and a ratings system designed to allow the user and reader to gauge relative values. Some 60 years after the end of World War 2, interest in Third Reich militaria remains strong and, inevitably, in any popular area of collecting there is material of doubtful provenance designed to catch out the unwary. The 'Collector's Guide' series has proved an essential guide for those interested in the subject and this latest addition to the series will continue to build upon the considerable reputation that the series has built up over the years. Providing the collector with detailed and objective advice, the book should be essential reading for any active collector of Third Reich militaria as well as those interested in the Kriegsmarine during the period from 1939 to 1945. Customer reviews A collector's guide to the Kriegsmarine by .. Daniel Demott () This book is great as a portable reference the photos are nice .But lacks the in depth details to tell one maker from another on the badges. A nice intro book for the new collector.
