Customer reviews

Good, but could be better 4 by .. Robert E. Fowler (New Orleans, LA)
Great for adults to teach and HELP kids. The key word here is help. Kids need to be able to read dates, mint marks, and what is written in the book. This is beyond most 6-7 and some 8 year olds
This book is based on a great idea, but the final product leaves a lot of room for improvement in the following areas.
1) The book says age 6-12. Under birth year coins, it has a space for a
large Silver Dollar(last one made 1978)
2) Binding stretches out turning pages
3) Some holes cut too large and coins fall out
4) Some holes cut too Small and coins are hard for an adult to push in
5) Leaves out the Sacagawea dollar, which is not hard for a kid to find

You must decide. I bought 5 for grandchildren. Oldest is 5. The 4 and 5 year old are a challenge, but are worth it to see the excitement they have when we find another coin to go in the book. I will put the other books aside for a few years till the rest are OLDER.

A great start to collecting anything, complete and kid-friendly 5 by .. E. Cho (Loma Linda, CA)
I bought one for my 5 y.o son and then bought one for my 9 y.o. daughter because they enjoyed doing the first one so much. It is nice because it is simple to fill in a large portion of the book and the kids feel a sense of accomplishment.

There are some rare coins required but not a ton of them. I am finding several on eBay ($2.00 for a rare quarter, etc.) and the kids are saving up to buy a few of them.

Have a magnifying glass handy so kids can see the dates on the coins. You'll need a good pile of coins to start with. Your kids will be busy for an hour or so. I find that we put the books away and bring it back out every other month. We also carry around a list of the coins we are missing and keep an eye out for them.

This book was in my top 5 purchases of the year so far.

FANTASTIC!!! 5 by .. Neha Soni-patel (Cleveland, OH)
This past summer my kids and I sorted, counted, and rolled over $550 in coins. In the process we filled our coin collecting book (the previous version of this one) and I couldn't believe what a great bonding experience this was. I have 3 children 6 1/2, 5, and 3 years old. My 6 1/2 year old was really into this...not so much for my other ones. But, I think they were just a little to young for them. We're on the hunt to fill in all the slots in the book.

A TIP: We used glue to keep some of the coins in. They are a little tough to get in the slots, but we used a quarter and pressed the quarter on the coin to oush them into the slot. It's amazing how heavy the book gets when it's full. This was a great memory for me this summer.

Awesome Gift! 5 by .. Book Giver (Odenton, MD USA)
I bought this as a kindergarten graduation gift for my daughter. Little did I realize the family bonding it would inspire. She and my husband spent hours sifting through our coins. Then we took it to the grandparents house and they spend hours going through their coins with her. We now have given 3 more as birthday gifts to her friends. The slots work perfectly and the historical information is very well done. It's a gift she'll have for many, many years to come instead of a toy or book she'll outgrow someday.

Great book, bad binding 4 by .. K. Ferrel (Atlanta GA)
This is the third time I have purchased this book. What a great way to introduce children to coin collecting. However, with my third purchase, the binding has either changed or I received an older edition. The binding keeps getting caught on the pages but all in all I would still buy the book. However I would look for the version with metal ring binding versus the white plastic covered metal binding I received on this latest book. I would have given the product five stars otherwise.

Great book for getting started 5 by .. Buttershug (Wisconsin)
I landed the job of cataloging my Father-in-law's coin collection. I didn't know a thing about coins. I got this book to help point me in the right direction. It is extremely helpful in giving me the terms used and explaining the DO's and Dont's (DO NOT CLEAN THE COINS) of collecting coins.

Hello ,Michael Here 4 by .. Michael V. Morris (Homer, Alaska United States)

Beginner's Kit 4 by .. Jessie R. Schmidle (Terra Alta, WV United States)
My son wanted to look into stamp collecting. I don't know much about it. This is a good review/starting place to see what is involved in the hobby. It made a nice Christmas present, didn't cost much and showed him I had listened to his interests. Nice format and helpful included items.

A good beginning 4 by .. K. Clausen ()
This album is strictly for U.S. stamps and covers the early 1900's through 2005. There are some black and white illustrations for each year, as well as blank spaces for other stamps. The book would have been a little nicer with a spiral binding and illustrations in color. Pages that wouldn't lie flat were a definite frustration for our grandson. A few starter stamps were included, as well as hinges, but there were only about a dozen hinges, so the first thing we had to do was find a source for them. Still, it's a good functional album for providing a beginning without a large outlay of money.

Disappointed 2 by .. Baker Mom ()
We ordered this kit for a beginner at stamp collecting. We expected the album to be free-form, so he could save the stamps that he likes. Instead the album has pages for specific years, starting in 1901, and photos of specific stamps for many of the spaces. I'm not a stamp collector myself, and maybe this is a standard format, but it's not at all what we wanted. The Guide is okay, and the magnifying glass is inexpensive but okay. But we ordered the kit primarily for the album, and it's collecting dust on a shelf.

Not bad for a beginner. 4 by .. C. Shultz (California)
This is a nice kit for an early beginner at stamp collecting. Please note that the album is only for U.S. Stamps. It's a good deal for the price.

Beginners start here 5 by .. R. Brenneise ()
I've very recently started collecting coins and I found this book to be the perfect introduction.

Very Useful for the Beginner 4 by .. CJ (Seattle, WA USA)
Great stuff for the beginner in this book - small histories of US denominations, coin categories to buy with caution, useful pictorial guide on grading, basics on coin shows, great tips on preservation. Probably not woth a buy for the experienced, but it is called coin collecting 101. Could have done without all the pages of state quarters. Seriously, it looks like the author was just filling pages. Overall all though, worth a buy for the novice.

The Expert's Guide to Collecting and investing in Rare Coins: Secrets of Success 5 by .. Gregory L. Adams (Poway, CA United States)
Mr. Bowers Does it again... This is at least his Fourth iteration on this subject; "Collecting rare coins for profit-1975";"Common Sense Coin Investment: A Revealing Look at Profitable Coin Investment Opportunities-1982";and "A Buyer's Guide to the Rare Coin Market- 1992" and they have all been good and well worth reading, but this one is by far the best! From the basics and common sense, to deep insights gleened from over 60 years in the business, Mr. Bowers puts it all together and presents it in a well organized and very readable format the invites..., No encourages you to read from cover to cover (even if you don't collect colonial coppers or Broken bank notes) In all an outstanding and very readable reference!

Coin Handbok 2 by .. W. C. Staub (Fort Huachuca, AZ)
I could have done without this book. Its design is flawed, and the binding is stiff and brittle. I prefer the Redbook or Bluebook.

Warning: Not for Neophyte Numismatists 4 by .. Prof. CJ (North FL, USA)
This book is EXTREMELY thorough. However, as a newcomer to the field, it was a tough one for me, as it seems the author already presupposes a fair amount of knowledge of coin-collecting jargon on the part of the reader (to be fair, perhaps it's my fault for not taking the "EXPERT'S" part of the title literally.)

I highly recommend this book if you already have some basic knowledge in the field. However, for genuine neophytes like myself, it would be better to get the basics from a source geared to beginners first (maybe COIN COLLECTING FOR DUMMIES.) I think this book would then be much more understandable and enjoyable.

"BOWERS BEST BOOK EVER": BUY IT; invest on you, READ IT; every chapter is a page turner, RECOMMENDED: 5 STARS at least***** 5 by .. british mysteries (Pacific Coast, USA)
--
"The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins" is definitely worth reading. It is autobiographical and contains the secrets of his 60 years of success as collector, investor, numismatist, grader, dealer, auctioneer, ANA board member, and author.

Cramming six decades of numismatic life experiences into a single book is tough, requiring mental and spiritual strength. Doing this in a comprehensive, coherent and organized manner is unquestionably a laborious, taxing, onerous, and difficult task. Such a demanding project could only be achieved by the formidable Q. David Bower.

Mr. Bower is one of the most prolific numismatic writers of all time, he has written over 30 books and numerous articles and columns. This is by far the most important of his works and possibly the best ever, the quality of information & wide-ranging content makes it the cream of the crop, flower of the flock, pick of the bunch --whatever you want to call it.

It is full of valuable expertise, candid story telling, dealer & auctioneer trade secrets, smart buying and selling techniques and recommendations, and detailed descriptions of every US coin by type, complete with a close focus on: Rarity, Grading, Quality, and Value of coins. It also includes his recommendations and insights on Conferences, Life & Internet Auctions, Library, Protection and Conservation of Coins, Tokens, Medals, and Paper Money.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I Recommend this Book.

A must have book for both the collector and investor! 5 by .. Richard Hall (Chicago, IL)
I read "Gold Rush: How to Collect, Invest & Profit With Gold Coins" by Mitch Battino and Arlyn Sieber (see my review of that book) prior to reading this book by Q. David Bowers. I'm glad I did because while the Gold Rush book was a very big disappointment, it made me realize just how truly good Mr. Bowers book is.

I have to be honest, coin books are generally NOT books that you read from beginning to end and find that you can't put down. This book is an exception - I couldn't put it down and I read the entire book from beginning to end.

Although I've been collecting for years, one thing I enjoyed about this book was that some of those obscure numismatic terms that other authors assume you know, Mr. Bowers will stop and take a sentence or two to explain the term. I really appreciated that.

Plus, where the Gold Rush book failed in the "How to Collect, Invest, and Profit," this book did an excellent job of showing how to do just that. It is not a price guide with outdated prices. It is an excellent reference guide with information that will never get old. This book will still be great 10 years from now.

This book has excellent chapters with hands-on advise and great stories to help explain coin market cycles, determining coin prices and value (not a list of coin prices like other books but goes into things like grading, rarity, and demand), history of the coin market and predicting the rare coin market, techniques for buying and selling, and chapters on collecting advise for everything from gold coins, commemorative coins, to paper money and tokens and medals. The only thing I would point out as that this book sticks to the U.S. rare coin market and does not discuss World coins.

I own more than a few coin books and this book has shot up to the top of my list as the "must have" book. Whether you are a new or experienced collector or investor (aren't we all really both), you will enjoy and profit from this book.

In the future, when I'm asked by new collectors what is a good book to get, this will be the book I recommend.

We gave this to our six year old niece and she loved it. She and her dad are collecting the uncirculated versions of each new presidential dollar using this book.

Great bio's of each president up to G. W. Bush 5 by .. K. Moreau (Charlevoix County, MI USA)
This is a nice book- magnetic catch keeps it closed. Holds coins nicely. Has slots for all deceased Presidents and 6 extra. Nicely illustrated book with a two page spread of info on each and every president up to G.W. Bush. I collect the Presidential dollars for my Grandchildren- and I highly recommend this book- I am very pleased with it. I will give it to each of my grandchildren along with the dollars I have collected so far- they can put them in themselves- and enjoy this book. Then, each year at Christmas I will give them the 4 dollars issued in the past year to add to it- it will give them and myself something to look forward to each year...for many years to come.

Number of Pages : 730
Publisher : Kirk House Publishers
List Price : $40.00
Amazon Price : $26.40
Used Price : $29.32

Product Description

The Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting, introduces the collector to the full scope of United States stamps and stamp collecting. Beginning with an introduction to; stampless covers; (letters mailed before the introduction of postage stamps), it then introduces the many stamps issued from their inception with the 1845 Postmasters' Provisionals through the stamps of the early 21st century. Other chapters deal with the host of stamps known to collectors as; back-of-the-book; issues, including stamps issued for air mail, special delivery, U.S. possessions, revenue purposes, and postal stationery. The history of the Postal Service and the various stamp printers, including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is explored.

A section of the Encyclopedia highlights the technological innovations of stamp production, the history of the movement of the mails, markings applied to envelopes, and meters and machine generated postage. While a book about U.S. stamps and stamp collecting, in a larger sense it is a history of American politics, culture, values and technology seen through the prism of the nation's postage stamps and postal service.

Each of the sixty-two chapters employs a similar format, wherein an introductory article is followed by practical tips on collecting; an almanac of chronological dates to orient the reader within each historical era; a selection of quotes, both contemporaneous and modern, to provide context; examples of postal usage; and a compilation of references to which the reader can turn for more information.

While the Encyclopedia will be welcomed by many advanced stamp collectors, it was written with the beginning collector in mind. It assumes no prior experience with collecting, and includes a comprehensive glossary of philatelic terms. The full color, hard-bound, 730 page book is generously illustrated with stamps, covers and related material.

Stamp Lovers Alert 4 by .. armchairinterviews.com (Minnesota)
Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting is not intended to replace the requisite catalogue, but meant to supplement it. Its sixty-two chapters are divided into three parts. "Stamps of the United States" spans thirty-one chapters and covers definitives, commemoratives, special purpose stamps, and postal stationary. The first two chapters discuss postage before stamps and are well-researched and concise without being simplistic.

"History, Production and Technology" claims twenty-four chapters and covers the history of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, United States Postal Service, and technology of stamp production. The last seven chapters focus on related collectables such as first-day covers, metered mail, seals, and cancellations. Appendix A is a glossary of terms. It is unfortunate that this glossary is not available as a stand-alone publication as it would complement a catalogue well. Appendix B and C are print and web resources. Appendix D is a list of benefactors without an explanation of their generosity.

Each chapter has an almanac, a reference for additional information, and relevant quotes from that period. Some chapters have notes for collectors or examples of postal usage. All of these addendums serve to make philately more interesting for novice and seasoned collectors alike.

Curiously, this publication has no index making it difficult to cross-reference issues that are cited in multiple entries. The term "encyclopedia" would imply that the book contains detailed information on every US stamp issued (until its publication). In this regard it is a disappointment as some issues are not covered at all, and a large number are given perfunctory treatment.

Generally, an interpretative review of the socio-political factors that prompted an issue or public reactions to it is lacking in its depth of coverage. Technological factors essential in the production of stamps are adequately covered and well presented. While the glossy pages enhance the vibrant color reproductions, these pages are not conducive to writing personal notes.

One can debate if the book is truly an encyclopedia. However, it is packed with interesting facts and insights making it a wonderful companion to any philatelist's United States stamp catalogue.

Armchair Interviews says: Great for stamp lovers.

Holly Keller has created vivacious new paintings for this favorite Reading Rainbow title about geology. Readers follow two enthusiastic rock hounds around the globe as they add to their collection. Customer reviews

Misleading title, decent info about types of rocks and how they are made 4 by .. Learning All The Time (USA)
This is NOT an introduction to rock hounding as I had hoped.

The bulk of the book contains interesting information about the three types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) that was easy for young readers to understand.

The end of the book briefly encourages kids to go out and collect their own rocks, aiming for a variety of colors, and then to go home and try to identify them.

Overall, I don't think this book is going to inspire a kid to rush out and become a rock hound or geologist, as it lacks any sort of "wow" factor, but it is certainly a useful educational book.

If there are any rock hounding groups or gem/mineral shows near you, THAT is a great way to get your kid fascinated by the amazing rocks/crystals/minerals that come out of our earth.

Top Grade! 5 by .. Angela J. Zaev (Greater DC Region)
Let's Go Rock Collecting is an excellent book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science Series. My son started with this book when he was 4 (he's now 5). It has great illustrations that capture a child's attention and actual photos of the various rocks described so that the child (and parent) can identify a few basic rocks.

One thing that is really great about this book is the simple illustrations to educate the reader about the Earth's Crust and Solid Rock Layer. There are simple diagrams of:

1. The components of a Volcano
2. Moh's Scale of hardness
3. The formation of sedimentary rocks
4. Metamorphic rock process

The book also ends with a practical suggestion that kids will love and that's how to begin your own rock collection and start to identify the rocks you have.

NOTE: Depending on your view of the age of the earth, you may like to know that this book utilizes millions of years in its descriptions.

I am a huge fan of the Let's Read and Find Out science series of books, and this one doesn't disappoint. Clearly written information, great photographs, and wonderful illustrations educate the K-2 science student in an enjoyable way.

Nicely Done 5 by .. Wendy S ()
My husband and daughter are both geologist and they thought this book was well written. My bright 3 year old grandson enjoys having it read to him. Usually it would be enjoyed by an older child, but he enjoys it.
