Customer reviews Clear, concise, and detailed illustrations. by .. devan (Cedar Rapids, IA USA) I had my 1880 home flooded in the Iowan floods of 2008. In rebuilding, I have the opportunities to straighten out a lot of "grandfathered" upgrades. This book has been helpful in both DIY's and contracting bids. Now I am getting a home that is safe, code current and still has the Victorian architecture that I loved when I first bought my house. I couldn't have done it without this book. It has save me thou$ands.
Great for IT exams, but you need UBC anyway by .. Alexandra Betancourt () This is great if you just want a general view of UBC and IBC codes.
But, it constantly refers to the IBC for the specifics.
But overall, is a Building Codes for Dummies!!!
Easy understand and get to the point by .. Ricky L (USA) Interpretation of codes sometime is confusing. With the picture to explain, it is much easier to understand than just read the words. A picture is better than a thousand words!
Building Codes Illustrated - Understanding the 2006 IBC by .. Oscar Wilde (Houston, Texas) This is an excellent book. It makes it very easy to understand many of the issues addressed by the IBC. In a few minutes of flipping through the pages right after I received it I was able to clearly understand issues that I previously had to read over and over again in the code to try to understand. Any time I have a code issue now I first read the code and then look at the same item in this book to see if my interpretation is correct.
A bit basic for the professional, perhaps valuable for a student. by .. Chris Salay (los angeles, ca) Ching always does a good job of clearly illustrating aspects of design and construction, but in this case the book lacks depth. Only the most basic codes are included and it is of little or no help for the building professional.

Product Description Taunton's Code Check series is widely recognized as the most reliable and up-to-date code reference available. Now, the thousands of builders, remodelers, and inspectors who have relied on their Code Checks for accuracy and thoroughness will delight in this handsome new edition that combines all the codes into a single, lay-flat volume. This comprehensive manual spotlights the safety issues behind all the codes. Up-to-date and featuring more than 400 illustrations, Code Check Complete is cross-referenced to the International Residential Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, and the National Electrical Code. It is the only resource any builder or inspector needs to be completely up to code. Customer reviews Code Check is complete guide! by .. D. Byce (San Diego, CA United States) I was suprised how complete the codcheck series is. If you live/work in California you will need the special California edition
Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes by .. Edward Pohlman (Toledo, Ohio) This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.
Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.
It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.
I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.
An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.
The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.
The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.
One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.
It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.
One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.
CODE CHECK COMPLETE by .. E. Day () Code Check Complete should be on every job site. A comprehensive book with illustrations on the latest building codes
Code check complete review by .. Dennis Krentz (Lake County, CA) good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.
Well pleased by .. OnlineBuyer (Norfolk, Va.) This book is well made, obviously for field use, more importantly the information is very well organized and presentation is easy to understand. I own all the code check series and this just ties in with the rest. Illustrations are excellent and documentation and references are great. A definite positive addition to my library.

Product Description Providing a unique approach to learning the Code, the Illustrated Guide to the NEC uses highly detailed, technically accurate illustrations and visuals to break down and simplify the expanding volume and complexity of the 2008 National Electrical Code. By translating the sometimes vague, complicated wording of the Code into straightforward illustrations and clear explanations, this book provides a resource that will facilitate comprehension and application of Code requirements for beginning and master electricians alike. Material is organized logically, covering fundamental provisions first, and then grouping code requirements by the type of occupancy, beginning with one-family dwellings, and progressing on to multi-family, commercial locations, and special occupancies. This organization is not only logical but also reflects how information is needed when working in the electrical industry, better preparing readers for the real world. Its comprehensive coverage, innovative learning approach, and industry-based organization make this an indispensable supplement to the NEC, whether users need information on a specific area, or need to learn the Code from cover to cover. Product Description A unique visual approach to interpreting and applying the 2006 International Plumbing and Sewage Code While other plumbing code books are annotated guides filled with almost as much legalese as the code itself, this is the only book to use illustrations as the basis for explanation, a bulleted format for text, and real-world case studies to explain how to apply and interpret the 2006 International Plumbing and Sewage Code. Customer reviews Not So Much by .. S. peters (France) This book is very hard to follow. The Illustrated manual that is published by the ICC is much more coherent and informative. I regret having spent so much money on this book becaust it has nothing to offer beyond what is in the ICC publication. The font that was utized by the author in his ilustrations are murder on the eyes. Buy the ICC version as it has the actual code verbatim and then the articulate and practical commentary. Plus the illustrations are superb especially when compared to Patterson's offering.
And, as always, Amazon rules. Their Customer Service is second to none.

Outstanding "cheat book"! by .. Bruce Brocka (Quad Cities) Are you a contractor or work in (or with) the trades? I rehab old houses and find this guide without peer. While not for the do-it-yourselfer (it's definitely not a how-to book, it strictly presents the salient aspects of the often confusing and opaque residential building codes), it's a quick reminder and update on codes applicable to electrical, plumbing, heating, and general construction. It covers mutltiple major codes. I've found the individual guides essential and this work combines them in a handy, fits in your portfolio size. Very useful for those who work in the trades, or deal with contractors, as I do.
If you work in residential construction work in some way, buy this book. Considering the price of the usual codebooks or even the books explaining the codes, this book is also a bargain.
Code Check: An Illustrated Guide To Building a Safe House by .. Robert C. Maldonado (Arizona) Excellent product, received in similar condition. Will serve as a great tool to evaluate homes.
Very handy. by .. Terry M. (Seattle, WA United States) This booklet provides a fine checklist for reviewing your own designs or doing home inspections. This checklist is not intended to be a replacement for your building code books. You still need to have a firm understanding of the codes. Code Check does serve as good 'tickler' on thoses codes that you do not refer to regularly and helps make sure that you don't overlook something.

Now all the artwork, symbols, architecture, and historic locations—over 160 images—are beautifully compiled in this full-color collector's edition. A mind-bending code hidden in the works of Leonardo da Vinci. A desperate race through the cathedrals and castles of Europe. An astonishing truth concealed for centuries… unveiled at last. While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call. The elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum, a baffling cipher found near the body. As Langdon and a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, sort through the bizarre riddles, they are stunned to discover a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci–clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. The stakes are raised when Langdon uncovers a startling link: the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion—an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. Langdon suspects they are on the hunt for a breathtaking historical secret, one that has proven through the centuries to be as enlightening as it is dangerous. In a frantic race through Paris, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu find themselves matching wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to anticipate their every move. Unless they can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle, the Priory's secret—and an explosive ancient truth—will be lost forever. Instantly catapulted to the top of the bestseller lists around the world, The Da Vinci Code is simultaneously lightning-paced, intelligent, and intricately layered with remarkable research and detail. From secrets embedded in the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, to the symbols of ancient Egypt, to the architecture of landmarks such as the Louvre, Westminster Abbey, Rosslyn Chapel, and more, this fully illustrated collector's edition delivers the complete reading experience of Dan Brown's riveting novel—from the opening pages to the unpredictable and stunning conclusion. Customer reviews Solve the mysteries surrounding Da Vinci. by .. J. P. Kooshman () After all these years Dan Brown's bestseller still tops the list of most read and discussed and argued over novels...quite an accomplishment...but the Code is far more than that. It's a scientific inquirer that makes you want to research the book soon after opening its binding...yet it's more than that. The historical and artistic aspects of it will raise your awareness levels to heights that you'll be unable to resist discussing them with friends, families, and even strangers. Chalked full of puzzles that get the reader involved early and a pace that never slows down...combine to create a novel for the ages...I highly recommend reading it...if you haven't already. I would also recommend to readers of great historical novels..the book "Sirens by Tin Geo" Sirens: A Novel all the above applies for this title as well...except its roots are Greek Myth.
Boiling history in shaman's pot by .. Jari Aalto () Rewrite history and you have bestseller that sold million of copies worldwide. The masses can't be wrong? It depends. The book is fun, but far away from any masterpiece. If the reader knows history of Europe, the religious dogmas, the raise of Christianity, then there is no better book to gets good laughs while reading it.
Catholic church has denied the ultimate truth and sealed the greatest mystery behind Vatican's doors; the Mary's blood line and cover up of her relationship to Jesus. Gift wrapped in a religious sect chase for Holy Grail and its secrets. Dot by dot clues everywhere waiting to be solved, exotic locations to visit, romance at Paris, mystic Opus Dei religious sect and everybody is on chase or being chased. A sure formula to success.
The problem is that the historical elements are too incoherent and cause reader to keep getting dismayed by the "Uh" and "Oh's" of the mistreatrements and conclusions. Brown's historical bricks build the house to stand on rumors (represented as facts), imaginative connections (unreal facts) to seal the plot and falsehoods to pave the walkway. The thrill is not there because too much is covered in the book: all religious issues are subjected to pot of hodgepodge where Brown cooks and boils almost any ingredients teared from their real historical backgrounds. The less reader is familiar with the tenets the book knots together, the more he is undoubtedly exited by the conclusions and conspiracy theories drawn.
One (1) star. The idea is interesting, but the prose used in the book is blatant, reads like movie transcription (which it did), and uses wrong approach to appeal intellectual readers: smashing and cooking everything in a Holy Kettle dries out the story and depletes all vibration. On the bright side, if one is unfamiliar with the history of Europe and Christianity, you will get a ride of a lifetime for sure. For those readers: 3 to stars.
Recipe for success by .. James D. Best () Dan Brown took an established plot formula, injected a few tricks from action/adventure flicks, and then spiced the concoction with religious controversies that insured broad and shrill media attention. Brilliant. The Da Vinci Code sold 100 million copies to become one of the best selling novels of all time.
The borrowed plot formula comes from Robert Ludlum. A man and a woman come together by chance and get enmeshed in a deadly mystery which forces them to run for their lives. A chase occurs in exotic locations, mostly in Europe. With both good guys and bad guys in close pursuit, the thrown-together couple must solve a deep puzzle to save the free world and their own lives.
Action/adventure flicks jerk you into the story from the get-go and use sub-second cuts to give the impression of frenetic movement. The Da Vinci Code starts with a gruesome murder in an bizarre location and then the entire 400+ page plot takes place in a single day. Despite the brevity of the storyline, the book has over a hundred chapters--some as short as a half page.
The Da Vinci Code challenges core Christian beliefs and presents elements of the Catholic Church as a vast, centuries-old conspiracy intent on preserving power at any cost. This was a theme that was sure to generate expansive publicity and even admiration in some secular quarters.
Combine these three elements with a smooth writing style that never distracts the reader from the story and you have a blockbuster bestseller.
I liked the book. In fact, I read it twice. But then, I love action/adventure mysteries and ignored the cultural sniping. If you like a good story--and you're one of the sixteen people who haven't read The Da Vinci Code--then buy this book because it's a fun read.

Even better read after seeing the movie! by .. orbops (Scottsdale, AZ USA) I finally got to pick up The Da Vinci Code, after seeing the movie a couple of years ago. I think by seeing the movie first, and then reading the novel afterwards makes the book much richer. I was impressed that the movie followed the novel pretty closely, with only minor changes. What makes this book so impressive is that it really makes you think about the concepts in the novel. It is clearly marketed as fiction, yet the Catholic Church seemed to treat this novel as heresy.
As a novel it makes you really think about the possibilities in a plausible manner. Even the History Channel still replays the Da Vinci Code revealed special, which walks through the points made in a book. Isn't this the purpose of a really good book, to make the reader think about the story long after reading it?
Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next movie from Dan Brown, Angels and Demons - and then I'll read the novel after seeing the movie!
As a work of thriller fiction, it is very enjoyable by .. Jason Buberel (Sunnyvale, CA USA) I knew better than to take this book at anything more than what it is: A work of fiction. With that approach, I found it very fun to read. The plot is interesting, the characters are well written and believable, and there is enough back-story to help suspend disbelief.

Product Description Order this easy-to-use guide to building codes for elementary and secondary schools. The construction industry is evolving a single set of international building codes. Now, more than ever, architects need an interpretive guide to understand how the building code affects the early design of specific projects. One in a series of focused guides to building codes from Wiley, this book familiarizes code users with the 2006 International Building Code(r) (IBC) as it applies to elementary and secondary schools. Early understanding and incorporation of code-compliant design provisions in a project is essential. This book provides school design professionals--architects, engineers, and other related design professionals--with an understanding of how the International Building Code was developed, and how it is likely to be interpreted when applied to the design and construction of elementary and secondary schools. Building Codes Illustrated for Elementary and Secondary Schools features: - A user-friendly visual format that makes finding the information you need quick and easy.
- Nearly 900 illustrations, by architectural illustrator Steven Juroszek in the style of noted illustrator and author Frank Ching, that help visualize and explain the codes.
- Text written by experienced experts who have been instrumental in gaining acceptance for the new unified building code.
- A guide to navigating the new code plus complete coverage of all key aspects of the IBC.
The newly adopted International Building Code is similar but by no means identical to the three model codes that most practitioners have used in the past. Building Codes Illustrated for Elementary and Secondary Schools is an essential companion to the IBC for emerging practitioners seeking to master the full scope of accepted knowledge in the field, and for experienced practitioners needing to understand the similarities and differences between the familiar model codes and the new IBC. Customer reviews 2006 Building Code Handbook by .. Marilyn Wong () This book was purchased for our office and we are using it constantly. We bought it for the lowest price and we are happy with the condition and the timeliness arrival of the purchase.
Makes Sense out of the Building Code by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV) This handbook is a plain English guide to the Building Codes that are used (more or less) across the United States.
More or Less - means that the individual codes are used by most places, but not all. Some areas have enhanced the codes to strengthen particular areas. When new codes come in, it takes time for them to get approved all across the country, so some places will have the older version, some the newer.
Plain English - means that the codes themselves are written in what's called 'code text.' This is a quasi legal kind of writing that is intended to minimize errors in intrepretation, but which doesn't exactly succeed except that it succeeds in being difficult to read.
This book presents the code in an easy to understand format. It is much easier to read, but lacks the legal precision of the code itself. Use this book for understanding what the code means. Use the code itself if you are going to court, and reference this book if you're having to explain it to a jury.
This is an excellent approach, and the book is very well written and cross referenced to the code itself.

Product Description Over the years, the National Electrical Code® has grown in volume and complexity. This updated edition utilizes visualization to present a complete, concise, and easy-to-understand exploration of the 2005 Edition of the NEC® that is unlike anything available on the market today. Each highly-detailed illustration offers insight into Code requirements and is enhanced by clearly written text blocks that read quickly and with little effort. A fresh approach to the organization of topics includes coverage of fundamental provisions, followed by Code requirements relevant to specific types of occupancies. Intended as an indispensable supplement to the NEC®, this book translates the sometimes vague and complex language of the Code into clearer, cleaner, and simpler terms. From beginners to master electricians, the Illustrated Guide to the National Electrical Code, 3E provides something for everyone practicing a trade in the electrical industry. Customer reviews Good for an overview by .. B. Delegan (Oswego, IL United States) This guide is a great intro, but you need NEC if you are doing anything beyond the basics. Even for some of the basics, you need NEC. The NEC handbook, while somewhat expensive, is invaluable.
not what I expected, but worth the price by .. Douglas H. Haden (Ridgecrest, CA United States) Miller's book starts where the revised edition of Rex Cauldwell's excellent Wiring a House (For Pros by Pros) ends. Unless you are an electrician or similarly experienced, you might want to start with Cauldwell's book.
Upside: Illustrated 2005 NEC is readable. I started at the beginning and progressed through the book, reading and studying illustrations in detail where needed, just scanning material I knew well. To me, this is important: Miller gave an example and an illustration immediately after every topic I found difficult to understand from a first reading. He didn't miss one. Lots of painless learning in a small amount of time. Virtually every topic is cross-referenced to the 2005 NEC. References are set off at the end of paragraphs so they don't interfere with the flow of descriptions. Color (two shades of blue) is effectively used. For example, each statement in a descriptive series is lettered with a blue bullet and there are corresponding blue bullet letters with blue lines pointing to the relevant part of an accompanying illustration or illustrations (it's more effective than my description of it).
In addition to being readable, Illustrated 2005 NEC can, with some effort, be used for reference. I wish it had a better index, but a few tries and some scanning took me to an answer for many of my queries. I found several (illustrated) answers I have been seeking: Do two one-pole circuit breakers in a single breaker position have to have a handle tie to count as one hand operation against the not-more-than-six-hand-operations disconnect rule? Can you feed the busses of a subpanel through a two-pole circuit breaker (back-fed device) rather than the lugs if you don't have a master breaker? Answers to all my questions were cross-referenced to the correct NEC article, table, or subtopic.
Downside: I was disappointed when I first thumbed Illustrated 2005 NEC. I did not expect "Illustrated" to mean so many clothes closets complete with hangers, cute cabinets, room dividers, sinks, stoves, toasters, and so on. They illustrate the book but they do not illustrate the NEC. I was surprised at the number of pages devoted to calculations worksheets; that probably isn't a downside to professional electricians. Topics I had expected were missing or skimpy (viz., I wanted a much better treatment of subpanels). Finally, there is the cost, over $50 when I bought it in mid-2007.
I bought Miller's book with my very first copy of the NEC. For all my whining, I am glad I spent the money. I would have given Illustrated 2005 NEC four-&-one-half stars if I could have.
Helpful by .. Diane R. Coriano (Meriden, CT United States) This book is a great companion to the NEC 2005 codebook. It's a HUGE help.
NEC 2005 Guide Overview by .. Joseph J. Lisboa (Pleasant Hill, CA United States) I found the book a good reference for electrical wiring and NEC 2005.
Basically the book is targeted to electricians and installers. I failed to find any information on calculations of available short-circuit current (ASC) for service equipment. Industrial installations versus the code was not well addressed in book. In doing calculations of commercial and dwelling units one deals a lot with NEC Table 220.55 and the associated FNPs (foot notes). These FNPS are horrible cumbersome to explain the solution when dealing with multiple Ranges with different values of range's KWs. The author did vey litle in explaining and expanding this area of the code.
Joseph
A good place to start your wiring job by .. Victor H. Agresti (Gaithersburg, MD United States) My review is from a handyman perspective, rather than an electrician's.
The 442 page Illustrated Guide to the National Electrical Code® is organized into 5 sections: fundamental provisions, single-family homes and townhouses, multi-family dwellings, commercial buildings, and special occupancies, areas, and equipment (health care facilities, elevators, churches, etc.) Homeowner's can stop on page 188, the end of the single-family dwelling section.
The primary feature of this Guide is the picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words approach. See Customer Photos for an actual example from the book. The book describes each NEC "rule" in English, and further explains it through a captioned drawing. This writing style makes it easier to understand the material.
Here are the types of questions answered by this book:
1. How close to an outlet box does the first cable staple (or equivalent) have to be?
2. How tightly can you bend 12/2 NM cable around corners?
3. Is it OK to use 20-amp rated receptacles on 15-amp circuits, and vice-versa?
4. Attaching a ground wire to a steel box, and what kind of screws cannot be used.
5. How are you supposed to staple cables to studs when the cables were fished through a finished wall to a new outlet box?
6. What amp circuit must be used for bathroom receptacles, and what else can be on that circuit?
7. Does a laundry area require a dedicated circuit of a specific amperage?
The Guide answers these and hundreds of other questions. If you plan on getting an electrical permit, this book will help you pass inspection.
Even without an inspection, it would be comforting to know that tried-and-true installation techniques were used in the house we're remodeling. If you are planning on any but the simplest of wiring jobs, this Guide would be a good start.
