Product Description

For more than a decade, Steve McConnell, one of the premier authors and voices in the software community, has helped change the way developers write code--and produce better software. Now his classic book, CODE COMPLETE, has been fully updated and revised with best practices in the art and science of constructing software. Whether you're a new developer seeking a sound introduction to the practice of software development or a veteran exploring strategic new approaches to problem solving, you'll find a wealth of practical suggestions and methods for strengthening your skills. Topics include design, applying good techniques to construction, eliminating errors, planning, managing construction activities, and relating personal character to superior software. This new edition features fully updated information on programming techniques, including the emergence of Web-style programming, and integrated coverage of object-oriented design. You'll also find new code examples--both good and bad--in C++, Microsoft(r) Visual Basic(r), C#, and Java, though the focus is squarely on techniques and practices.

Quite possibly the best programming book I've read! 5 by .. J. Baker (Lubbock, TX)
The title pretty much says it all. No matter what level of experience you have, there's something to learn here.

Code Complete Review 5 by .. A. Karkal ()

The book was in good condition

good book 4 by .. M. Tilelli (Utah, USA)
I bought this because it was highly recommended as a must have for the software engineer. I browsed through it and I'm not sorry I bought it. It has some good stuff.

Best of the Best 5 by .. Lisa Yung (Washington)
Besides agreeing with the other reviews all I can say is that this text has made me a better programmer. Truly.

An Important Read 5 by .. Max Lynch (Wisconsin)
Though this book is filled with debatable opinion and redundant information, it's an important read. Read it if only to keep software engineering topics fresh in your head. Otherwise, if you are already experienced, it's kind of elementary.

Code Check is complete guide! 5 by .. D. Byce (San Diego, CA United States)
I was suprised how complete the codcheck series is. If you live/work in California you will need the special California edition

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes 4 by .. Edward Pohlman (Toledo, Ohio)
This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

CODE CHECK COMPLETE 5 by .. E. Day ()
Code Check Complete should be on every job site. A comprehensive book with illustrations on the latest building codes

Code check complete review 4 by .. Dennis Krentz (Lake County, CA)
good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.

Well pleased 5 by .. OnlineBuyer (Norfolk, Va.)
This book is well made, obviously for field use, more importantly the information is very well organized and presentation is easy to understand. I own all the code check series and this just ties in with the rest. Illustrations are excellent and documentation and references are great. A definite positive addition to my library.

My Favorite Programming Book 5 by .. The Blue Prince (Dallas, TX)
There's not much I can add that other reviewers haven't already written. I asked another programmer what book he would recommend and he said "Code Complete". I bought it and I say it's fantastic. I've been programming for over 10 years and I wish the other developers I'm working with would all read it and apply it's principles.

Every beginning programmer should own this 5 by .. Michael Calabro (Upstate NY, USA)
McConnell does just an excellent job explaining much of the rationale behind some Good Things when writing procedural code. I'm an RPG programmer and learnt many good things.

Recommended!

Absolutely necessary for any software developer or manager 5 by .. Jonathan Gardner (Federal Way, WA USA)
This book is extremely practical. Why more people have not read it is a mystery to me. I read this early on in my career, and it has helped me identify problems early on, work around potential pitfalls, and deliver projects on time or close to on time. It has given me the courage to speak up early and often.

If you want to be a software professional, I strongly recommend you throroughly study this book and apply its principals. Sure, all of the concepts are not applicable nowadays, but the vast majority are. This will help you understand what to do to avoid and mitigate the potential disasters you will inevitably face.

A programming book that's actually fun to read cover to cover 5 by .. Sören Meyer-Eppler (Münster, Germany)
This is an outstandingly good book about software construction techniques that lead to a sound, robust product. It starts with simple things like naming conventions, function layout and commenting methods, but covers the whole software development cycle of design, programming and quality assurance. Although it gives plenty of source code examples in several different programming languages, these are always short and easy to follow even for 'language foreigners'. Source code examples are only used to illustrate more general, important points, rather than specific implementation details. The author is careful not to force his personal style on you - which would be rather foolish considering the many 'religious' issues covered (naming conventions anyone? ;) ) - but presents his opinions supported by sound arguments that'll make even skeptics reconsider. The text is an easy read compared to more technical books and is covered with lots of very amusing short stories that highlight key points.
This book will be a great aid in keeping your and your coworkers' mental health while programming in a team under a merciless deadline.
If you are at all serious about programming - buy this book!

The classic text for improving software construction 5 by .. Craig Cecil (Baltimore, MD USA)
Most programmers cannot create reliable software. Most programmers do not construct computer programs correctly, regardless of methodology, language, platform, etc. For those who don't have a formal education in computer programming (e.g., Computer Science), or for those who don't want to forget the important concepts they did learn, Steve McConnell presents a classic text that drives all of these concepts home. McConnell covers everything involved in the process of constructing code, from methods of decomposition, to methods for prioritizing code comments. This book should be read by anyone who wants to improve the software they create.

Brilliant - affix your pince-nez and peruse 5 by .. Timothy P. Scott (Southern California, USA)
If you are intoxicated with the the creative possibilities of the English language, and are of "a certain age", you should find this book irresistible. Yes, the language is dated; as it was when it was originally written (in the 70s?). But the satire on the English upper crust/peerage and the clawing parvenus who are attempting to become same are priceless.
Donleavy is an acquired taste, possibly, but I think his works are all excellent in their own way. Do check it out; you should be utterly enchanted.

Dated, fitfully amusing 3 by .. Chris Ward (Costa Rica)
This feels like something haphazardly thrown together over a few months of noodling (including Donlevy's noodled illustrations throughout). Donlevy can be very dark and funny-- see "The Ginger Man" and "The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B"-- but here he's only hit and miss. And the pointed obscenity might have raised eyebrows in the 70s, but seems forced here. If you're new to him, read the good stuff and give this a pass...

The funniest, most cynically pointed book ever written 5 by .. James K. Fowler (Magnolia, TX USA)
This book was reviewed at the time as "The SOB's Emily Post" and I can't think of a better short description. Absolutely the wittiest and most laugh-out-loud book I've ever read -- and I've read a lot of books. Donleavy careens from one social faux pas and calamity to the next... "On being caught with your best friend's wife"... "On determining that you are on an aeroplane that is about to crash"... and provides true Looking Out for Number 1 self-preservation, the-world-can-bite-me advice. Beautifully crafted, as is all Donleavy's work, sometimes shocking in its juxtaposition of words, and deriving its true impact by couching its directives in the stilted language of the 1930's English Country Folk -- I must advise you: Do NOT read this book in a room or situation that requires silence; otherwise you will try to restrain laughter to such an extent that you'll give yourself a thrombosis. It's the only paperback book that I've guarded and kept for over 20 years.

I found it funny 5 by .. Dmitri (Johannesburg, South Africa)
I found it funny. If one likes Donleavy the book will not disappoint you. If you don't - probably stay away...

Wow 3 by .. N. Carter (New York, NY)
I really enoyed reading this book because it gave me the opportunity to write the following: Don't waste your time on this ineptly written and factually flawed collection of patronizing nonsense. The grammatically incorrect title, ("Trojans" is an adjective - though here describing nothing), is just the first of thousands of errors and clumsy observations. But don't take my word for it - it's plain to see this author knows very little about a lot of things [...]. A must read for anyone!

Not for advanced users or enterprise administrators 2 by .. Earl J. Mcgehee (Austin, TX USA)
Of the 310 pages of text in this book only about 50 pages have information about useful things to do to protect yourself from Viruses. The rest is defining malicious code, basic computer info (what is FAT16 and FAT32), what the FBI is doing about cyberhackers, etc. There is a pretty good chapter on social engineering, but most of the book would only be useful for people new to systems administration and in a small shop. There are only two pages about network firewalls - not much for a book with "network" in the title.
A number of known worms are described but there is no strategy proposed for detecting or stopping them. There is 1 page about responding to events and only 3 pages about securing web servers.
The information in this book is no longer timely or comprehensive.

Slammer didn't get me... 5 by .. ()
Hey..I followed the procedures outlined in this book and was spared from the Slammer virus. This book works!

Good, Sound Advice 5 by .. David (Reading, PA)
I must say that this book provides good sound advice that is easy to comprehend. Using the techniques outlined in this book, I feel safe and secure against hackers and malcious code threats.

Very Interesting 5 by .. Gloria (Lindenhurst, NY)
I found this book quite interesting. Unlike other books I'v read, this book explained this subject in an easy to understand and interesting manner. While it can get technical at times, I'd say...give it a shot. It's got some great links to security products that I never knew even existed.
