Product Description Taunton's Code Check series is widely recognized as the most reliable and up-to-date code reference available. Now, the thousands of builders, remodelers, and inspectors who have relied on their Code Checks for accuracy and thoroughness will delight in this handsome new edition that combines all the codes into a single, lay-flat volume. This comprehensive manual spotlights the safety issues behind all the codes. Up-to-date and featuring more than 400 illustrations, Code Check Complete is cross-referenced to the International Residential Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, and the National Electrical Code. It is the only resource any builder or inspector needs to be completely up to code. Customer reviews Code Check is complete guide! by .. D. Byce (San Diego, CA United States) I was suprised how complete the codcheck series is. If you live/work in California you will need the special California edition
Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes by .. Edward Pohlman (Toledo, Ohio) This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.
Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.
It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.
I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.
An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.
The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.
The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.
One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.
It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.
One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.
CODE CHECK COMPLETE by .. E. Day () Code Check Complete should be on every job site. A comprehensive book with illustrations on the latest building codes
Code check complete review by .. Dennis Krentz (Lake County, CA) good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.
Well pleased by .. OnlineBuyer (Norfolk, Va.) This book is well made, obviously for field use, more importantly the information is very well organized and presentation is easy to understand. I own all the code check series and this just ties in with the rest. Illustrations are excellent and documentation and references are great. A definite positive addition to my library.

Peter Walker (Southern California USA) As usual the book is top quality and invaluable in my profession. Peter Walker, Building Inspector 22 years.
A Must Have by .. S. Koepper (Long Island, NY) Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.
I can't follow the format by .. M. Leitch () The book is awful. I cannot follow the format and don't understand what they are trying to communicate. There are a few bits of helpful information - but overall this book will do nothing for me. The "cute" drawings and jokes are not appropriate for a reference on electrical codes. And why dedicate so much space the the history of electricity?
Don't waste your money. Go with something professionally prepared. This flipbook was not.
Outdated Material by .. Ricardo Zelaya (Orlando, FL USA) This book is mostly general information. Many of the figures do not identify the wires e.g. hot, neutral, ground. The section on Grounding is many years out of date, and would present an electrical hazard if followed. Most modern homes nowadays use PVC piping thus rendering all this advice on this page useless and dangerous for the layman. Because plumbers use nonconductive material to make connection watertight, using pipes for electrical ground is outright dangerous. Do not use this book because some advice is good, but some is not. Not knowing what advice is the good one may put your life in danger.
Useful in spite of itself by .. () If the purchaser actually needs to know the UBC reference numbers, they will need to do some searching, because all too often the Section number cited in the Code Check series isn't correct. I do not have a copy of the International Building Code so I can not judge how the actual references correspond to the citations listed here, but one wonders how the authors could get the UBC citations so wrong, so often. Because the Code Check series cover residential applications of the Code quite well, I suggest it be used as a study aid for Code Students. Because the surface is designed to be erased many times without leaving ghosts, the student will need to make paper copies. If the sudent goes thru the lists, they should mark down the actual section references on the copy. When the student is finished, he or she will have a good idea of what the code requires for residences and how to use the UBC (or the California Building Code) to locate those requirements in the code.

Michael T. Hailey () I bought three books at the same time, recieved two within seven days of the order. The third has yet to come. Contacted the vendor and he stated that it must be lost in the mail and offered to re-ship or re-fund, I wanted to re-ship because I needed this book for my work. Waited a couple of weeks and sent an e-mail asking when the book had been re-shipped, got and e-mail back but didn't state the date it was shipped but said if I didn't recieve it in three days they would give me a refund. Well have not gotten the book after 40 days. Not sure if I will get a refund like they state but if you are looking for a quick and no hasel transaction don't look here.

Outstanding "cheat book"! by .. Bruce Brocka (Quad Cities) Are you a contractor or work in (or with) the trades? I rehab old houses and find this guide without peer. While not for the do-it-yourselfer (it's definitely not a how-to book, it strictly presents the salient aspects of the often confusing and opaque residential building codes), it's a quick reminder and update on codes applicable to electrical, plumbing, heating, and general construction. It covers mutltiple major codes. I've found the individual guides essential and this work combines them in a handy, fits in your portfolio size. Very useful for those who work in the trades, or deal with contractors, as I do.
If you work in residential construction work in some way, buy this book. Considering the price of the usual codebooks or even the books explaining the codes, this book is also a bargain.
Code Check: An Illustrated Guide To Building a Safe House by .. Robert C. Maldonado (Arizona) Excellent product, received in similar condition. Will serve as a great tool to evaluate homes.
Very handy. by .. Terry M. (Seattle, WA United States) This booklet provides a fine checklist for reviewing your own designs or doing home inspections. This checklist is not intended to be a replacement for your building code books. You still need to have a firm understanding of the codes. Code Check does serve as good 'tickler' on thoses codes that you do not refer to regularly and helps make sure that you don't overlook something.

Morrison () This guide answered most of my basic questions I had about replacing a sewer pipe. Although it did not indicate support material type (softfill, sand, etc...) or prefered methods for hydrotesting. It is worth the money and will sometimes show you things you might be forgetting. Any unanswered questions I had I covered with the city inspection department.
Code Check, Plumbing - 3rd Edition by .. T. J. Karasek (Longview, WA) A handy reference for all phases of residential plumbing. Welll presented for homeowner use. Reference to code paragraphs is extensive but useless without a copy of the code. Requires contacting the local plumbing inspector's office to determing whether your area goes by the International Residential Code or the Uniform Plumbing Code. Restrictions in this book are given for both codes.
If you have an older edition be wary as numerious details of the codes changed from the second edition to this third edition.

Raymond C (Lancaster, PA United States) Some good reference material (it is only 30 pages). Some of it references NEC which means you are lost unless you have code book available. The 4th edition is for the 2005 code. Good chart for conduit fill. Not sure how much the page on swimming pool lighting gets used.
Outstanding Reference by .. Randy () I am not an electrician but as a licensed builder and home inspector I find the various Code Check's (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc) to be outstanding references, and the illustrations are a great help. Contrary to another rating comment, all the Code Checks I have do identify the particular code and year, either on the front cover or in the introduction. Anyone who pounds a nail or shops the electrical section at the local "big box" store should have copies of Code Check. Homeowners are notorious for saying (especially with electrical repairs) "Well that's the way my father taught me." Times and codes have changed and Code Check will keep you up to date and SAFE.
Great info by .. Arlene D. Odom (Mukilteo, WA United States) Excellent information. I also liked the hard cover pages to keep from getting damaged. Very easy to understand also.
A great resource, ONLY. by .. Tim Fan (Walnut, CA United States) All these code check books are excellent resources for contractors and field inspectors.
However, I am very disappointed about the fact that Code Check never puts down what version of code book referenced. Instead, they simply put "updated to the latest version of xxx code"
As we all know, every State adopts a new code every few years (typically 3 years).
HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO KNOW IF THE CODE CHECK IS CURRENT IF THEY DON'T TELL US WHICH CODE IS IT BASED ON ?
This product is getting 3 stars from me because without knowing which code it's referenced, it's no different than any "build a safe house" for DIYers, which we already have tons of these laying around in any hardware store.
If Code Check takes the time, compare and update their content concurrent with the code updates, then it's worth 6 stars.

Customer reviews Seems like a better idea than it was by .. Jared Yates (North Carolina USA) For my purposes, this book wasn't as handy of a reference as I thought it would be. It has lots of pictures and is flashy, but I ended up using books about framing and foundations to really get enough information to be useful in building a shed.
A Must Have by .. S. Koepper (Long Island, NY) Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.
valuable quick reference by .. ArchiFitz (New York, NY) Although the graphics seem simplistic at first glance, they make the information easy to grasp. I had several "ah-ha, I get it" moments when browsing for information. I actually enjoyed looking at this code reference. That's a first!
This one is a must by .. Sami Shamma (McLean VA) Anyone building or taking a builders test should have a copy.
Not for Contractors taking thier test by .. Sami Shamma (McLean VA) This book is NOT useful for anyone taking there Class "A" Contractor Test with PSI. It is more useful for commercial applications.
