Rhoads () I am a theatrical costumer. This book has been very beneficial to me and I think that it would be interesting to anyone who needs to know what the average person wore during the 1940's. It includes images of everything from undergarments and shoes to play clothes and evening attire . Some are in color . You can also get a great idea of hair styles for this period . There are sections for children , teens , women and men .
I purchased the companion book which illustrates fashion of the mid 40's
also .
Because it is compiled from catalog ads, the description of the clothing is under each garment . This was helpful to me in knowing what fabrics were used , and having the little details about the pleating , or what ever else was highlighted about the garment .
It is worth the money .
Wonderful research by .. Susan Branch (Austin, TX USA) As a costume designer for theatre, I find this entire series an excellent source of specific research for 20th century real clothing. Because each book is dedicated to only three or four years in history, there is room for a wide variety of products, from lingerie to nursing uniforms to young men's "trendy" sportwear.

Product Description Part of a comprehensive series by Schiffer Publishing on fashions from the Sears catalogs, this latest time capsule travels back to the late 1930s. More than 350 photos reveal what the everyday trends and styles for the modern man, woman, and child were. Pleats, embroidery, shirring, and fur were among some of the big fashion "must-haves." The cut of the clothes, especially for women, were intended to give a slim and trim look. Skirts and dresses almost always have that so-important flaring hemline. For men, suits were styled in the Clean-Cut, very popular Sports Back, and Classic styles. Children's clothes mimicked the adult styles. Customer reviews Wonderful fashion overview of the period. by .. Phyllis Herring (Washington, DC USA) Yet another fine book from Schiffer's growing series of this kind. The images from the catalog are reproduced clearly and sharp. The colors also look well defined. The focus is primarily on women's fashions, as there usually is in this series, and there is a sampling of men's and childrens clothing, too. We will probably never see fashion like this again. The level of detailing seems almost "fussy" (bows, buttons, embroidery, pleats, gatherings, shirring and the like) but it can be pretty to look at and I can almost begin to admire the level of effort it took to maintain such a feminine image.

Product Description The gamut of trends and fashions during the late 1970s are explored in this priceless pictorial review. Pages from the Sears catalogs open for a trip back in time to the disco era, the "me decade," the bundled-up fashions of the oil embargo, and the buckled-down cowboy look of the new macho man. Lace up your earth shoes for a trip to the prairie, take a tour of the peasant cultures of Eastern Europe, go on safari, hit the ski slopes, or go surfing. Join in the fitness craze, and take a look at the new line of clothing for larger women. Polyester's outer limits are explored, from its most garish applications in plaid suits to its transformation into the textured realms of tweed. And blue jeans get their due, too, in a look at the time when designer jeans and the faded look ruled everyday wear. All this, and more, with original prices and current day values for the collector, fashion aficionado, and designer. Customer reviews BOY'S JEANS by .. () I would like a seasonal or specialty catalog from SEARS on boys jeans dating from 1960's and 1970's as a gift for someone who collects and makes clothing.

Product Description These styles will ring a bell not only with America's baby-boomers, but also with current fashion trend watchers. Today's interest in retro fashions makes this book as current as it would have been more than thirty years ago, but the quality is much better. Using today's technology, it presents more than 400 color photographs of clothing styles for men, women, and children culled from 1964-67 Sears Catalogs. Images of mohair sweaters, cardigan sets, bloomer playsuits, madras jackets, checked gingham shifts with matching triangle scarves, ruffled rib-tickler tops and capri pants, Bermuda collars, wraparound skirts, maternity wear, and even days-of-the-week panties all combine to give us a look into what the average American was wearing, along with descriptions and original prices. Current prices are listed for some of the items for those interested in collectible vintage clothing from the era. Come see the hipper side of Sears! Great '60s clothes ref. by .. () Sure, "Radical Rags" is an amazing book, but very few could actually afford, or indeed have the guts, to wear many of the designs it features. This book shows how the look of the '60s trickled down to the middle American masses. Don't be put off by the Sears name--many of the outfits here are divine, and some are downright outlandish. Even the prim suits look fresh and cute. Unlike some other books on vintage clothing from this publisher, this one features actual source photos from the period, so the hair-dos, make-up, accessories and overall look are accurate. The companion volumes on the late '60s and 1950s are equally fab.

Product Description Here is an exciting new installment in a series from Schiffer Publishing illustrating fashion trends in America. These books are a fantastic resource for costume designers looking for new ideas to recreate an era, for collectors who want to broaden their search for vintage clothing, and for fashion designers looking to revive retro styles. From hats to handbags, and dresses to dungarees, this book brings to life every necessity of the late 1940s with authentic details from the original Sears catalogs. Displaying the fashions and trends of post-War America. The clothing reflects a social revitalization after years of hardship and strife, with an emphasis on children with the post-War baby boom, the influence of French and European styles, and a return to femininity for women following the 'Rosie the Riveter' era. Juniors' skirts flare in anticipation of circle skirts, complete with big motifs. Men's suits are flatteringly tailored to emphasize long torsos and narrow hips, and casual wear stresses a return to the concerns of bowling and hunting. An excellent visual reference, this book offers more than 300 full-color and black and white photographs, and thousands of items of clothing, shoes, and accessories, along with detailed descriptions. A guide to retail values for these items on todays market is included as well. Customer reviews Another great reference for a decade by .. Vintage Crazed () Much like the other books in this series I was impressed. The pictures are great, many of them are in color which i find very useful. It covers everything that men, women and children were wearing during this era. There is not a lot of text, so if you're looking for a book on fashion to read, this one is certainly not what you'll want. However, if you need pictures to reference, there are tons of great examples and variations on the late 40s. (i.e. Christian Dior's 'New Look').
Fine effort from Schiffer by .. Phyllis Herring (Washington, DC USA) A significant period for fashion; going from the austerities of rationing to the flamboyance of Dior's "New Look". As usual, Tina Skinner (who seems to be doing so many of these books from Schiffer) has done a good job choosing which fashions to show us and Schiffer did a good job with the color and reproduction. There are a couple of pages that seem a bit dark but considering that 60 year old Sears catalogs are not so common, they (Schiffer) might have had to take what they could get. Ah, so many of these clothes I'd love to wear for myself!

See the popular styles of dresses, suits, coats, and sleepwear; as well as hats, shoes, and undergarments. Printed and solid fabrics are shown with customary accessories and in the latest styles available. Today's fashion designers will find the pages inspiring, and vintage clothing collectors will enjoy authentic designs. Customer reviews mid '30s fashions -- Great reference! by .. Vintage Crazed () I bought this book because I deal in vintage clothing and constantly need resources to help me date pieces that i sell. I was really impressed with the pictures in this book, they are really detailed and there are tons of variations and examples of 30s styles. Everything from lengerie, to hats, gloves, shoes, jewelry, dresses, skirts, pants -- you name it, and it has men's and children's fashions as well. It also shows seasonal trends.
Even though it's a bummer to have to buy three books just to get an idea of one decade, I think it is worth it. By breaking up the fashions into "early - mid - late" you really can see the progression of style and the subtle changes that define these decades. The book also has a lot of color pictures, which is extremely useful! I would suggest this book for anyone who loves the glamor of the 30s or is interested in this book as a reference. If you're looking for a lot of explainations and text--this isn't the book for you, it is mostly pictoral.
