Customer reviews Good for Advance Trip Planning to NYC by .. B. Olive (Pikeville, KY) This book has some very interesting information about New York City and all the attractions and experiences one can have during a short or extended visit. However, it is definitely a book to obtain several days or weeks prior to making your journey. Unlike a travel guide book, which tends to be designed for quick referencing or thumbing through for the specific information you want, the particular organization of this book is not amenable to a "quick review". The reviews are concise and well written, but to really get the most from this book, I would recommend taking your time and absorbing the content before making out a specific itinerary for your visit. I emphasize this because I waited until the last minute to order this book. After seeing what interesting things I could have planned, but did not because I was too rushed to give this book the attention it deserved before hopping on a plane, I later had some regrets about not getting this text sooner. Now I have some great info for my next visit, but this is definitely a book to peruse while having a cup of coffee in the advance planning stages of your trip. Used in this manner, I would highly recommend it. It is much less useful to take with you around the city for planning activities on the fly. Get the good stuff out of this book before you go, and then use your travel guide to help you make those reservations and get to the points of interest. I will be using this approach prior to my next NYC excursion.
NY by .. Paolo Rusconi (Italy) This is one of the best guide of NYC that I ever used. If you plan to visit NYC, you have to buy it. You can find good restaurants, great tips and a lot of unique and uncrowded places to visit.
1001 suggestions but didn't use many of them on a 4 day visit by .. C. Clark () I tried to read this book, jumping around to this and that, but since this was a first family trip with kids many were not applicable, and others were just a bit too quirky or didn't grab me. The writing was great - very descriptive and evocative - and it gave me a great flavor of NYC before the trip so 3 stars for that. I really want to see the unicorn tapestry next visit though.
1001 Best things to do in NY by .. Linda A. Chrystal (upstate NY) This book is fabulous. It is well written and has things I never knew existed. The range of prices is good, there are new things I want to try. The verbiage gives an excellent description of what the venue is about. The range of things to do must cover every taste, so it will appeal to all.The Best Things to Do in New York City: 1001 Ideas
GREAT! by .. Carri Pecorella (Arizona) I loved the ideas in this book! I took some of the ideas and had a great time...you'd have to spend a month non stop to do it all!! I'd recommend this book for anyone who's looking for the New York classics old and new along with things way off the beaten path!

Product Description A New York Public Library Outstanding Reference Book
The rich and eminently browsable visual guide to the history of New York, in an all-new second edition
The Historical Atlas of New York City, second edition, takes us, neighborhood by neighborhood, through four hundred years of Gotham's rich past, describing such crucial events as the city's initial settlement of 270 people in thirty log houses; John Jacob Astor's meteoric rise from humble fur trader to the richest, most powerful man in the city; and the fascinating ethnic mixture that is modern Queens. The full-color maps, charts, photographs, drawings, and mini-essays of this encyclopedic volume also trace the historical development and cultural relevance of such iconic New York thoroughfares as Fifth Avenue, Wall Street, Park Avenue, and Broadway. This thoroughly updated edition brings the Atlas up to the present, including three all-new two-page spreads on Rudolph Giuliani's New York, the revival of Forty-second Street, and the rebuilding of Ground Zero.
A fascinating chronicle of the life of a metropolis, the handsome second edition of The Historical Atlas of New York City provides a vivid and unique perspective on the nation's cultural capital.
Customer reviews A researcher's short cut by .. Carol A. Buchanan (Montana, United States) The Historical Atlas of New York City solved a huge problem for me. I'm writing a novel set partly in New York in 1864, and while I lived in the City in 1964, that's a hundred years too late for this novel! I live now where research facilities are slim, and I needed something to show me where people lived, shopped, worked, entertained themselves.
This book answered my questions. It showed me which landmark buildings were on which streets then and gave me the background for the characters who inhabit my novel and the City. It has prevented me from having a character walk past the Flatiron building, or attend a ball at the Waldorf-Astoria.
It also confirmed that elderly gentlemen probably played chess in Tompkins Square Park just as they did a hundred years later, and that the brownstones around Washington Square were inhabited by wealthy families.
It has enabled me to put some of my own reminiscences (faithfully recorded in my journals of the time) into the book while avoiding some anomalies.
Not all my questions were resolved in this book, but studying the maps gave me enough information about the trains in New York to avoid some errors, like describing Grand Central Station, because it gives the date that amazing edifice was built.
A valuable addition to my own research library!
Wonderful by .. E. Szabo () This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
Strong buy
Almost Great by .. Zuggzugg (Cohoes, NY USA) This book includes many really nice maps of early New York. Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information. Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow. Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations. A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas.

Good Job by .. Carri Pecorella (Arizona) Well done Cheap Bastard!! You could take some of the ideas in this book and do them anywhere!! Some of the things you'd have to actaully live in New York but if you're trying to stick to a budget I'd recommend this book for sure, however...you NEED to plan!! Customer reviews Another "No Regret" Purchase from Frommer's by .. B. Olive (Pikeville, KY) I have now visited several cities for the first time after consulting various travel guide books on the market, and consistently, I find that Frommer's tends to be the best. Frommer's uses authors and editors who actually LIVE in the cities you are reading about, and so you get a local perspective along with the other basic information you need such as maps, hotel and restaurant recommendations, etc. You don't have to shy away from this aspect of Frommer's by thinking the reviews and recommendations are skewed. A great deal of effort is placed on objectivity and providing a very well presented (and diverse) product. Specifically to my recent visit to New York City, again I found this source to be my favorite as I traversed through Manhattan and ventured out into other areas for the first time. The maps were extremely helpful, and this book is organized as well as the others I've used from Frommer's.
Simply due to the fact that travel within NYC presents a unique set of challenges (specifically for visitors who might not be familiar with riding the subway, or visiting the Big Apple for the first time), I do recommend buying a separate subway map (perhaps laminated) containing information about the express and local trains. I have written another review about the particular one I used, which was very good and purchased at the same time I bought this book. I'm not implying those in the Frommer's guide are not good, because they are. However, I found that using Frommer's along with my other map was extremely efficient, and used together as complimentary tools, I was much more well prepared than some other tourists I observed in the subway stations referencing multiple books and maps to hop to their next destination. I even had a couple of individuals ask me for directions, which was surprising. I suppose I seemed comfortable because my level of stress was minimized by studying the Frommer's before my visit, so I was a little "less" like a tourist (and this is a good thing).
Mostly accurate and helpful by .. violinmike () This is a very good basic guide to New York City. It has a well-considered selection of sights, including several small yet worthwhile museums, a number of important architectural highlights, and some must-see outer borough attractions. The hotel list is useful and includes some strong budget options. In truth, no book of this type can do New York restaurants justice, but several solid choices are here and the poor-quality touristy spots (spots analogous to the Hard Rock Cafe, Olive Garden, and such) are mercifully almost non-existent -- the listings of good pizza spots, bagel joints, and deli places are especially helpful. Not sure I agree with all the "Best Bites" (Patsy's over DiFara for pizza?), but mainly solid options here. A good choice.
Perfect introduction to NYC by .. J. Stappers (Elewijt, Belgium) We very much appreciated the well thought structure, clear explanations and tips from the author.
We will check wether all info was accurate on our visit next year!
But this book has sharpened our appetite to visit NY.
One minor negative element : Sometimes the author pushes to much his likes and dislikes.

Product Description Editorial ReviewExcerpt from New York Times 10/12/08 You may think of Fodor’s as dependably bland, but its “New York City 2009” (Fodor’s Travel, 552 pages, $18.95) is the can’t-go-wrong choice for just about any first-timer to the Big Apple. First, it’s beautiful — great layout, nice maps, easy-to-read font on thick paper. And design matters with guidebooks: they have to be legible in low light, on crowded buses and in airports when you’re jetlagged and your contacts are killing you. The best way to break up this mammoth city is by neighborhood, and Fodor’s devotes about 200 pages to that task. The neighborhood guides pack information into breezy prose, and have sections like “Where can I find ...?” which gives you two choices each for a coffee stop, “a quick bite” or cocktails in each neighborhood, eliminating possible excuses for entering a Starbucks or McDonald’s. If you’re browsing in the bookstore and you want a quick sense of why Fodor’s stands out, look at their seven-page section on ground zero that starts on page 48 and somehow manages to explain the site and the history in depth while also hitting the right notes about the tragedy. Product Description From the Bronx to the Battery and beyond, New York is a wonderful town—and one that was centuries in the making. With the Statue of Liberty raising her torch high, it became the shining symbol of a promised land for immigrants throughout the world. Follow the city’s growth, and look at her buildings old and new, from Trinity Church to today’s glass and steel skyscrapers. The trip passes through Ellis Island, first stop for many new Americans; Battery Park City, where Castle Clinton still stands; Hester Street, once filled with peddlers selling their wares; the original and new Penn Stations and Madison Square Gardens; and more. Sidebars look in depth at such New York attractions as the subway. Customer reviews Past and Present by .. Chriss Lyon (St. Joseph, Michigan United States) Beautiful pictorial of a city emerging and growing but yet unchanging. Some of the most well-known areas are captured in this book using a glimpse of the past and a current image without attempting an exact recreation of the previous. It shows an evolution of time but yet a real dimension to the city itself.

Product Description While it may seem that every possible topic about New York City's attractions has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the first book to focus on the hundreds of off-the-beaten-path destinations in the city. Some are small museums, others are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their claim to fame as the world's largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all can be visited via the subway system as the author directs readers to which of the city's 486 subway stations will get them closest. These are the types of places and things that fit perfectly with New Yorkers' psyches and egos and satisfy the desire of tourists to see the unusual. For example, New York is home to the world's tallest Doric column, the world's largest armory, the world's largest cathedral, and the world's largest Reform synagogue. It also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting many of these sites is meeting the people behind them. Organized geographically to help readers explore the culture and diversity of the city's great neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions offers venues in Lower, Middle, and Upper Manhattan; Brooklyn; the Bronx; Queens; and Staten Island. Each section features attractions and fascinating sidebars highlighting places that are particularly interesting to explore. Customer reviews Recommended for any travel library strong in New York City attractions by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) There are so many books on New York's attractions that one might wonder at the need for yet another, but this book is a key and the first to focus on a hundred off-the-beaten-path destinations, from small museums and nearly forgotten historic places to odd shops and small oddities. A geographic arrangement aids in the journey, with chapters offering addresses, hours, directions, web sites, and long paragraphs of enticing description. Recommended for any travel library strong in New York City attractions.
Great Book for Travelers and Locals Alike! by .. Dominic R. Tancredi () I love love love this book! I've been to 3 of the places so far and love that everything is easily (mostly) accessible and pretty spot on with the descriptions in the book.
Plus, each attraction's description is not only digestable, but filled with a great traveler's context, unlike some Lonely Planet versions where you never really get the context of WHY something is fun to visit!
Excellent Look into NYC's Hidden Treasures! by .. Liza Monroy (Brooklyn, NY) Suzanne Reisman is a wonderful guide through off-the-beaten-track New York City. This guide is well-written, entertaining, thoroughly researched, and full of wonderful gems for any traveler or NYC dweller looking for quirky, fun, and enlightening things to do around town. I love the troll museum. Highly recommend!
I had no idea this stuff was in NYC!!! by .. Paula (Weston, FL) Having recently moved out of NYC after a LONG time living there, reading this book makes me want to move back right now! I wish I knew about all these cool places while I was living close by.
This book highlights a lot of little-known and interesting places all over the city that are easily accessible on public transportation. The wide range of places means that anyone can find something of interest. It is organized by location, so the visitor can plan on doing several things with one trip and gives great directions on how to get there and what to expect. A little bit of the history of each place rounds out the vivid descriptions, so I felt like I was actually visiting the places just by reading. What a great and out of the ordinary guide-book!
So much fun! by .. Skink (Wilmette, IL) Indeed, this travel book is truly unique. Blending fascinating information with humor, mild expletives, and Yiddish phrases, Ms. Reisman creates a relaxed writing style that is as appealing as the colorful cover is eye-catching. The perspective traveler wants to peruse the book from cover to cover as if it were a novel, and not just a catalog of destinations, in order to discover what she has to say. The reader is simultaneously enlightened and entertained. Whoever dreamed that guidebooks could be so much fun?!

Highlights include the quintessential Village bookstore, vintage saloons, a cinematic tour of Brooklyn, a celebrity deli, and a Hasidic dairy bar above the city’s most famous diamond exchange. Also revealed are New York’s best-kept secrets, from a dockside fish restaurant where the famous rub elbows with fishermen, to the American Museum of Natural History as seen through the eyes of Holden Caulfield. Contributions from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Cunningham, neurologist Oliver Sacks, journalist Anna Quindlen, folksinger Pete Seeger, and dozens of other luminaries are also included. Beautiful comprehensive maps keyed to entries, a subtle "nonguidebook" look, and two ribbon markers make this a unique traveler's companion. Customer reviews best kept secret by .. Claudia Arkush (Atlanta, GA USA) I have an armload of NYC guides and this one is a delight to read. It is a love affair with the big apple and a great addition to a standard get around the city type book
I just can't get past the lack of aesthetics... by .. Mindelei Wuori (Marquette, MI) I was soooo looking forward to getting this book - but I have to honestly say that the layout is so utterly boring that I just can't get past it. The book is full of beige, beige, and more beige (other than the black on white text that is).
For an individual that is "directionally-challenged", I would have difficulty locating where I'm supposed to be in the city based strictly upon written instruction. Plus, frankly, I love to look at the beautiful photography that can be found in some guidebooks (and some imagery would help determine if a particular walking tour was a good fit to the reader). I really think if the layout were made more appealing that more people would get into this book.
Good but not for the short-term vacation turist by .. Dra M. Helena Carrilho (Lisbon, PORTUGAL) This book has some good secrets but i found some not very useful or interesting or yet non existant (or so secret they change the adress regularly). Depending on your profession look in the collaborators index for a person of whom you think you identify with or you like their resume and try looking at their secrets its the easier way i found to get some useful and intersting secrets (some colaborators are simply ill-chosen are i don tknow why they were found to be useful to adress in the book). BUt mainly if you are the 7 day vacation turist go for a amercian express ou rough guide to the city and you'll get just fine!
keep your money by .. B. schutz (CHAPEL HILL, NC USA) Every winter I spend a week in NYC -to attend the opera, theater, concerts, museums, etc. I hoped this book would offer me some unexpected, relatively undiscovered places to explore. Not so. A waste of my money.
Explore New York by .. Editcoachnb (NY NY) () Great guide to quirky shops, less well-known sports and odd bitss of history. A joy to read and to guide your explorations.
