Product Description

A beloved, bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana—the book that inspired the equally classic Yuletide film.

The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.
This edition of A Christmas Story gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film. Here is young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his decoder ring is really a device to promote Ovaltine; his mother and father’s pitched battle over the fate of a lascivious leg lamp; the unleashed and unnerving savagery of Ralphie’s duel in the show with the odious bullies Scut Farkas and Grover Dill; and, most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa—or anyone else—to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Who cares that the whole adult world is telling him, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”?
The pieces that comprise A Christmas Story, previously published in the larger collections In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories, coalesce in a magical fashion to become an irresistible piece of Americana, quite the equal of the film in its ability to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone.

quite, festive, read to accompany the annual watching of the film 4 by .. Kelsey May Dangelo (Vermont)
A collection of witty stories that were incorporated into the classic film. Terrific prose and quirky tales, though, seem to have come across better on the much-watched film. Great stories that perfectly capture the world through the eyes of a child. Grade: B+

Great Holiday Read 4 by .. N. Adams (Eastern Washington)
Great book ... Nostalgic and funny. Everything that the movie is and more. Some language not suitable for little ones, but a great Christmas read nonetheless!

The actual short stories that "A Christmas Story" is based on. 5 by .. J. Collins (Las Vegas, NV USA)
Let me say first off that this is NOT the "Book of the Movie". Nor is it a single work, as the blurb on the cover may lead one to believe. This book is a compilation of the original wryly funny Jean Shephard short stories, that were developed by him into the classic film. These include the saga of the Red Ryder BB gun, naturally, the "Major Award", "Grover Dill" AKA "Scutt Farkus" and the Bumpuses; though one learns more about them, than just their hounds.
The whole book runs to only 130 pages, and is a perfect size for a stocking stuffer, or a gift for those folks one just doesn't know what to buy: work, "Secret Santas" etc. Recommended.

The stories of Jean Shepherd are great; Cavett's narration not so much 3 by .. Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA)
When we were kids, we used to take out our transistor radios, get under the covers at night and try to tune in WOR from New York which was usually able to be heard at night from our home in suburban Philadelphia. The allure of this activity was Jean Shepherd telling hilarious stories of his childhood in his cheerful, fruity voice. It was a forbidden pleasure (staying awake after 10:30pm on a school night) and you could both recount the stories and brag about staying up the next day at school (if you didn't doze off in class.)

Five of Shepherd's stories were melded into the film "A Christmas Story" which among my friends is counted as one of the funniest films ever. When I finally saw the film, I was transported, not only because it IS the funniest Christmas film ever, but I was a big fan of Shepherd's.

The film was composed of various short stories Shepherd wrote over the years, and they are narrated here by Dick Cavett, so you can enjoy them in your car or at home on the cd player.

Sadly, though the stories are as good as ever, Dick Cavett's light voice is too "amusing news story" style for my tastes. I think these need a richer, deeper voice. And worse yet, the background music and sounds detract rather than add to the story. The tale of the leg-shaped lamp in particular is marred by someone's idea of burlesque music in the background. Let the imagination fill in the sounds, I say. The narration (even Cavett's) should be enough. And for people with hearing discrimination problems (when background noise obscures consonants of words), the music tumult makes listening to a story difficult and irritating.

I was disappointed by this production, as the publisher is usually one of the best for audio books. If you can find a tape of Jean Shepherd narrating these stories instead, I'd recommend that.

A Nostalgic, Hillarious Look at Christmas 5 by .. evergreenreader ()
Haven't we all experienced Christmases gone wrong--burned turkeys, strange gifts, family misunderstandings? This book deals with all the things that can go wrong during the holidays...but it also shows that through it all, there are still a lot of things that somehow go right at Christmas...

Still Love The Christmas Story 4 by .. elviswoman (Dallas, TX United States)
When I was a little girl, my mom bought The Christmas Story book that was in circulation in the 70's. I remember closely looking at the pictures, loving the beautiful colors. The copy I had showed Mary on the cover.

I bought this book for my two year old and was thrilled to see that even though the cover illustration had changed, the story AND the illustrations on the inside were exactly what I remembered from my own copy years ago.

My daughter really loves this book, and I enjoy reading it to her. Would highly recommend.

Thank GOD! 5 by .. R. Simon (Breaux Bridge, La. United States)
I teach Kindergarten at a Catholic school. This is the perfect book to tell about the birth of Jesus. It has beautiful illustations and the words engage the listener. You will love it!

Another Christmas Story 4 by .. Richard Sherman (Troy, NC)

A great gift 5 by .. Sweet Potato (Bristow, VA)
I heard Ace Collins on a radio show talking about his book and sharing some of the stories/origins behind many of my favorite Christmas songs, both sacred and secular. Not only did I want the book for myself, but decided it would make a great gift, especially for people in my life who have EVERYTHING--I'm sure you have some of those people too. I bought two copies at a very reasonable price and the recipients loved them. I plan to buy a few more for next Christmas.

Great read - but too small 3 by .. S. Miltimore ()
The book and information was wonderful. A very nice read. However - stick to the original size. This miniature edition is a little TOO miniature... only about 1 inch square.

Good for modern songs, bad for older ones. 3 by .. EMTP EJ (Washington, DC USA)
The author should quote his sources, because others in the future may take his statements for fact, when some of the stories are not backed up by other authors / researchers. I have found conflicting information about some of the music both in print and online. A Google search will lead you to different versions and also different background info on "The Twelve Days of Christmas", for example. Also, though I am no musicologist, I would consider a christmas song as being secular, and a christmas carol as being about sacred topics, i.e. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary. In contrast, The "Reader's Digest Merry Christmas Songbook" is pretty good about (briefly) explaining the backgound / history of the selections (plus it has the music) and almost every one of the popular songs, but it does not always have all of the verses of the songs.

Sloppy research 1 by .. Rich Rogers (Utah)
For someone with 50 books to his credit--as per the dust jacket--Collins is highly sloppy in the research of this book. As has been previously noted, he just presented a common story about the origins of "Silent Night" without necessarily having done any deep research. And the comments about "The Twelve Days of Christmas" come straight from a silly internet piece, with no basis in fact.

This is common throughout this book. It seems more often than not, Collins has just done some cursory internet research and then slapped it all together and called it good.

Some other screw-ups: Irving Berlin was worried that "White Christmas" wasn't really a good song. Actually Berlin, upon introducing it to his office staff and musical secretary, refered to it as "not only the greatest song I've ever written, but the greatest song ever written." Berlin at one point had plans to make White Christmas the main production number in a major Broadway revue. In performing it for Crosby and studio execs, Berlin got nervous with himself and choked in performing it. You can read about this in Jody Rosen's excellent book on White Christmas, called "White Christmas."

As for his assertions about the meaning and origin of the term Merry in merry Christmas, he gets it wrong again. Ten minutes in the Oxford English Dictionary, available at any decent public library, would have given him the answers.

Better Books on this subject are Rosen's afforementioned book and "The Penguin Book of Christmas Carols" ed. Ian Bradbury.

Inspire Your Heart and Mind 5 by .. JAD (The Sunshine State)

Did you ever wonder how your favorite Christmas hymns and carols came to be written? Where were they first sung and why? Who are the people behind them? What events in their lives, what discoveries of faith, inspired these beloved songs into being? Ace Collins has complied a lovely little book to help you find out.

For instance, here you will find everything from "Angels from the Realms of Glory" to "White Christmas". (Yes, there are some popular songs sprinkled in among the hymns and carols!). Do you know...

...What favorite hymn was written the Christmas that the church organ conked out? (Yes, I know some of you know the tale, but it is here for those who don't).

...Which one was a faithful Christian's response to the carnage of the War Between the States?

...Which hymn was penned with a visit on horseback to the village of Jesus' birthplace fresh in the writer's memory?

Ace Collins relates the stories, both familiar and fresh. He helps the reader not only wonder as they wander through the holidays but also figure out who Good King Wenceslas was and why he is worth singing about after all these years. Collins is the author of over fifty books including "Turn Your Radio On" and "The Cathedrals". All of these stories are accompanied by the words of the carols and hymns, so you can sing or hum along as you read about them.

This book would be a great devotional book or family conversation starter to use throughout the Advent season, with 31 different stories to inspire your heart and mind throughout the wondrous season. It is small enough to serve as a great stocking stuffer and lovely enough to be a stand-alone gift for any number of people on your Christmas list.

Wonderful Tradition 5 by .. Blessed Mom (Cheeseland)
Our children have enjoyed this set of books every Advent season! It has been our tradition to read a week's worth of books each Sunday evening in Advent after lighting their individual Advent wreaths. It is a wonderful reinforcement of the true "reason for the season". I was thrilled to be able to find and purchase them each a set of their own to carry on the tradition as they head out to set up their own homes.

A Family Tradition 5 by .. Gloria ()
My family has used these beautiful advent storybook ornaments since it first came out in 1994. I was sad last year to see that it was out of print, because I wanted another copy. Soooo thrilled that it is once again in print! Received mine from amazon today. Exactly the same as it was 14 years ago. Love it!

Amazing calendar...still available new! 5 by .. Holli Wolfe (Noblesville, IN United States)
This calendar is beautiful - would be such a great heirloom to hand down and use for generations. I was sad to see that Amazon didn't have them new any more - I wanted to purchase several for gifts. I was able to find them as christianbook.com for about $10. Get these back in amazon, please!

Looking for 2 copies 5 by .. Julie Cochrane (Delta, BC Canada)
Yes, I would also like to find copies of this book. I actually ordered from Amazon a few weeks ago and then a week later was sent a message saying they no longer had any in stock. Imagine my surprise when the only one available on their site was listed for $1200+ !!!
This book has always been part of my children's Christmas. It is a very special part of our Christmas tradition. I was looking to give each of my sons one of their own to continue the tradition in their own homes when the time comes.
Does ANYONE know where to find this book?? I know some little old book store somewhere in the world has two copies sitting on the shelf ...

The Story of Christmas: Story Book Set and Advent Calendar 5 by .. M. Susan Sanders (Ceres, CA USA)
We had two of this set (the first one wore out!)for at least the past 10-15 years as our children were growing. The girls would gather round and read the little books to one another and then tuck them into the evergreen advent wreath for decoration each day as Christmas approached. Then last year, I reluctantly had to throw the set out since it had been fouled by rodents in storage, and was ruined. I never thought it would go out of print-I planned on getting a new set or two, since one daughter is married now, w/ her own home, this year. I can't tell you how disappointed I am to discover that they are out of print and only available used for $1200!!! Is there any way to get this title back in print? From the other reviews,it seems there is a lot of interest in it! M. Susan Sanders

(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)

Now joining Everyman’s Library—the most extensive and distinguished collectible library of the world’s greatest works—is an appealing new collection in a small Pocket Classics format, perfect for gift giving and reading pleasure.

Christmas Stories is a treasury of short fiction by great writers of the past two centuries—from Dickens and Tolstoy to John Updike and Alice Munro. As a literary subject, Christmas has inspired everything from intimate domestic dramas to fanciful flights of the imagination, and the full range of its expression is represented in this wonderfully engaging anthology.

Goblins frolic in the graveyard of an early Dickens tale and a love-struck ghost disrupts a country estate in Elizabeth Bowen’s “Green Holly.” The plight of the less fortunate haunts Chekhov’s “Vanka” and Willa Cather’s “The Burglar’s Christmas” but takes a boisterously comic turn in Damon Runyon’s “Dancing Dan’s Christmas” and in John Cheever’s “Christmas Is a Sad Season for the Poor.” From Vladimir Nabokov’s intensely moving story of a father’s grief in “Christmas” to Truman Capote’s hilarious yet heartbreaking “A Christmas Memory,” from Grace Paley’s Jewish girl starring in the Christmas pageant in “The Loudest Voice” to the dysfunctional family ski holiday in Richard Ford’s “Crèche”—each of the stories gathered here is imbued with Christmas spirit (of one kind or another), and all are richly and indelibly entertaining.

Only the Best 5 by .. Margaret Gertler (Ellicott City, Maryland)
The Everyman's Library edition of Christmas Stories is filled with warm and historic Christmas shorts that will long be remembered for the list of thoughtfully selected authors and their wonderful contributions. You can not go wrong with an Everyman's Library selection. A perfect Christmas Gift for all.

Not what I expected 1 by .. Mary C. Hattan ()
I bought Christmas Stories for my sister and one for a friend. Luckily, I decided to read some of the stories before wrapping them. The stories were not what I expected. THey included Lesbians, alchoholics, and for the most part the stories were not the warm ones I would share with my friends. The Dickens and Willa Cather stories were more what I expected. I ended up throwing both copies away because I couldn't think of anyone to share them with.

not all great stories-what a shame 3 by .. Margaret J. Bailey ()
I was going to purchase a second copy for my mother..until I read the last few stories. What a shame Diane Tesdell felt the need to include from Muriel Sparks' to Richard Fords' stories(not in the spirit of Christmas at all;Fords' was a true disappointment). The earlier stories(up to & including Truman Capote's)were wonderful;the rest, mediocre, and even nasty.Everything nowadays just has to meet a low "common" denominator, instead of aspiring to greatness!

A lovely little book with classic stories 5 by .. Robert Busko (Waynesville, NC USA)
Christmas Stories published by Everyman's Pocket Classic contains short stories that have stood the test of time and become classics in their own right. With twenty stories by authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (yes the Blue Carbuncle is a Christmas story), Charles Dickens (The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton), Leo Tolstoy (Where Love is, God is), O'Henry (A Chapparal Christmas Gift), Evelyn Waugh (Bella Fleace Gave a Party), or Truman Copote (A Christmas Memory), Christmas Stories is sure to have something for every reader.

Other authors include Nikolai Gogol (The Night Before Christmas), Anthony Trollope (Christmas at Thompson Hall), Anton Chekhov (Vanka), Willa Cather (The Burglar's Christmas), Saki[H. H. Munro](Rginald's Christmas Revel), Vladimir Nabokov (Christmas), Damon Runyon (Dancing Dan's Christmas), Elizabeth Bowen (Green Holly), John Cheever (Christmas is a Sad Season for the Poor), John Updike (The Carol Sing), Muriel Spark (Christmas Fugue), Grace Paley (The Loudest Voice), Alice Munro (The Turkey Season), and finally Richard Ford (Creche).

Comedy, suspense, or a touch of the emotional, it's all here.

If you want a book to carry with you on your holiday travels to fill in quieter momemts, Christmas Stories is the book for you. This would also make a terrific gift for anyone who loves the season. What a wonderful story collection.

Peace

Do some research! 1 by .. Douglas Snapp (Grandview Heights)
I really wonder what kind of research Mr. Collins did.

Granted the only selection that I read had to do with the Nutcracker.

I have a feeling that Mr. Collins never read E.T.A. Hoffman's (sic) original story, (it was Hoffmann, not Hoffman as is indicated by Mr. Collins), even though Mr. Collins recounts it. All in all, he makes some very erroneous comments about that story.

For the last 30 years or so, it has been a family tradition to read Hoffmann's story in English and in German during the month of December. We use "E.T.A. Hoffmann Nutcracker," Pictures by Maurice Sendak, Translation by Ralph Manheim, Crown Publishers, Inc., 1984, for the English version. For the German, we use "E.T.A. Hoffmann Werke, Zweiter Band," Insel Verlag, 1967. (Manheim did a wonderful job with the translation and, of course, Sendak did outstanding work with the illustrations.)

Mr. Collins writes, "Marie was a child who lived in a home devoid of love." Nonsense.

Then Mr. Collins writes of a "fairy tale that would hardly appeal to anyone except the most cynical of readers." Again, nonsense: the story ends with a "happy ever after" note.

Most of Mr. Collins other comments are stuff and nonsense, stuff and nonsense.

I didn't bother to read any of the other selections.

I would have rated this book with a "no star" rating, but it wouldn't let me....

Does this author actually research his subjects? 1 by .. Bill Egan (Florida USA)
How does Ace Collins manage to slap together a bunch of fairytales and call it history? His book on Christmas carols has a totally fictitious account of the history of "Silent Night" and this Christmas book has a completely fabricated version of the Nativity scene set up by St. Francis of Assisi. Collins wonders if the figures in Francis' Nativity were clay or carved wood. Collins supposes that Francis had figures of shepherds but probably skipped having any animals.

What?!?!?!? According to the two biographers of St. Francis (St. Bonaventure and Thomas of Celano) there were no clay or wooden figures of Mary and Joseph. There were neither shepherds nor kings in the Nativity at Greccio, Italy in 1223. There was a feeding trough (manger), a live ox, and a live ass. According to Thomas, it was beautiful in its simplicity with the manger acting as the altar for the Christmas Mass.

It's time for Ace Collins to do some real research and rewrite his Christmas books instead of foisting fairytales on an unsuspecting public.

Good for adult Sunday School! 5 by .. Robert A. Mara (Gainesville, VA)
As a Christian for 10 years, I realized this year how little I knew about Christmas traditions. When I found this book, I thought it was good enough to use as the basis for an adult (as opposed to children) Sunday School class. Feedback has been very enthusiastic! The book is well written, and an easy and interesting read. Each chapter covers a different Christmas tradition. Chapters are typically 5-7 pages. I highly recommend this book.

Perfect for lovers of history and the Christmas season 4 by .. Beth Cholette (Upstate NY USA)
In this book, author Ace Collins traces the history behind various popular Christmas traditions, from caroling and ornaments to mistletoe and yule logs. Collins provides various theories on the origins of each tradition, some of which date back to even before Christ's birth. He also does a nice job of explaining the rise in popularity of each activity as it moved into the mainstream of Christmas celebrations. Finally, the book carries a strong Christian message, as Collins talks about connecting each modern tradition back to its original roots in commemorating Christ's birth. This is a perfect little book to teach children about the history behind Christmas or for adults looking to find greater meaning in this much-commercialized holiday.

Interesting 5 by .. Tomilyn F. Forbes ()
I had great fun using this with my children's church class last year. I found items representing Christmas, and was able to tell them the story behind our traditions. Wonderful book.

Wonderful Christmas Collection 5 by .. DSK (Georgia)
I bought this book in December of 2006. It was an "impulse buy" at a local retailer and I guess I forgot about it, because I was looking at the books in my small library recently, and came across this book. I began reading the stories, and was thrilled that I had bought this wonderful little treasure.

Within this book are classics that we all know and love, and there are some stories that are new or less known.

Among my favorites:

The Gift of the Magi ~ O. Henry (pg.16)
The Cobbler's Guest ~ Leo Tolstoy (pg. 24)
'Twas the Night before Christmas ~ Clement C. Moore (pg. 105)
The Little Loaf ~ (pg. 190)
Christmas Day in the Morning ~ Pearl S. Buck (pg. 255)

This book is a must have for any library, and especially for anybody looking for added Christmas spirit during the holidays. Actually, these stories would probably be of better use if shared throughout the whole year, instead of waiting until the last month of the year!

My First Story of Christmas 5 by .. V. Sowell (Atlanta, GA)
My First Story of Christmas is a sweet, easy to understand, and Biblically correct book. The illustrations are positive and child-friendly, and work well with the text. The pace of the book is also good for kids who can sometimes be unattentive with long stories.

A Christmas Story for Kids. 4 by .. tvtv3 (Sorento, IL United States)
MY FIRST STORY OF CHRISTMAS is a book geared towards younger children that tells the story of Jesus' birth. The book is written in a very simple and straitforward manner. Other than the usual vocabulary associated with Christmas (manger, shepherds, etc.) the words aren't difficult and should be understood by most children. Also, unlike many Christmas stories that have the shepherds and wise men arriving at the same time to the stable where Jesus was born, this story is more Biblically accurate as it illustrates the wise men arriving to see and worship Jesus several years after He was born. Roger Langton's illustrations that accompany the text are smooth, warm, and comforting; appealing the children's need for security. My only criticism about the book is that until the last page there is no mention why Jesus' birth was necessary; why it was so special. Other than that, this is a wonderful book telling the story of Christmas for young children.

love the xmas symbol connection, but very short book 4 by .. violetgs (Mountain View, CA United States)
I love the concept of connecting the Christmas story to common Christmas symbols (tree, snow, star, etc). But it would've been even nicer if there was a bit more explanation and length. The book is very short.

This is another great book 4 by .. JamieLynn (Indiana)
This is a nice little book to introduce the Christmas Story. I thought it would be a little more in depth but it is still a nice little story.

A poetic relationship, 5 by .. JEV Jr. (ALABAMA United States)
The symbols of the Christmas season are related to the reason for
the Christmas celebration. This is done by way of charming art and a
narative poem. The book is constructed of laminated cardboard. Each
page is glossy and colorful. The begining page writes"Jesus is all around".The remaing pages illustrates how Christmas trees, snow on the ground, songs we sing, and gift giving relates to "Jesus all around".
A thoughtfull, concise and beautifully illustrated story about "Jesus all around". You will enjoy this as much as your child.

My children love this Joni Walker board book as much as her others. This book offers a look at the real meaning of Christmas and its symbols even for a very young child. Celebrate the symbolism that is all around us.

Product Description

In the early months of World War I, on Christmas Eve, men on both sides of the trenches laid down their arms and joined in a spontaneous celebration. Despite orders to continue shooting, the unofficial truce spread across the front lines. Even the participants found what they were doing incredible: Germans placed candlelit Christmas trees on trench parapets, warring soldiers sang carols, and men on both sides shared food parcels from home. They climbed from the trenches to meet in "No Man's Land" where they buried the dead, exchanged gifts, ate and drank together, and even played soccer.

Throughout his narrative, Stanley Weintraub uses the stories of the men who were there, as well as their letters and diaries, to illuminate the fragile truce and bring to life this extraordinary moment in time.

Why Not Always? 5 by .. Andy (Wisconsin, USA)
The book was, in my opinion, well written and thoroughly researched. Much of it included letters home written by soldiers of both sides, which I found interesting to read.

This book, without intending (I don't think), makes the point that politicians and old men declare wars, while it is the young who must fight and die. Most of the soldiers had no qualms with the other side, and some even made friends, as you'll learn through reading.

I read this book in only a couple days. It's a fast read, but not the type of book to read in one afternoon.

Hard to put the book down 5 by .. Philip J. Bohlken (Caldwell, Idaho)
Three or four years ago there were a number of features on NPR and elsewhere about The Christmas Truce of 1914. The story is amazing and simple at the same time. I wondered what more could be added in a full book. The author fleshes out the story with lots of detail added from many sources.

While the story is amazing, I found the book to be a broader study of fraternization between opposing soldiers. That has been going on through the centuries. In the Battle of Chattanooga during the US Civil War opposing soldiers sometimes crossed the Tennessee River for card games and dances together. This book explains how and why enemies can share time together in friendly pursuits.

I had always wondered about the language barrier in The Christmas Truce, but many of the German soldiers had worked in London as waiters and had learned English. One English soldier met his old barber among the German soldiers in the other trenches, and even got a haircut from him on the battlefield!

The book is very interesting to read and worth the time, although, I found the "What if..." chapter not that useful.

Silent night 5 by .. Colin Baker ()
On Christmas day our Pastor included parts of this book in his sermon.
He did not have all the facts, so as a present we sent him this book.
He wrote us a kind thank you note stating how much he enjoyed the book.
Food for thought.
thanks

I saw a thing on the history channel, and it was breif, and at the end so I didn't get the whole story, so I hope this books helps.

This book gave me for the first a real understanding of the Christmas Truce in No Man's Land in 1914. To see details of the events from all sides was great. It made me wonder why they just went back to the killing after it.
