What happened on this date in church history? From ancient Rome to the twenty-first century, from peasants to presidents, from missionaries to martyrs, this book shows how God does extraordinary things through ordinary people every day of the year. Each story appears on the day and month that it occurred and includes questions for reflection and a related Scripture verse.

A challenging Devotional 4 by .. Cheryl G. Skid (St. Lous, MO USA)
I ordered this book from Focus on the Family and began it in 2007. Every day challenged me to pursue Christian living on a higher level. Some days gave me historical glimpses that contradicted the teachings that have been politically taught in schools. There were a couple of instances wherein ancient Hebrew dates may have been presumed rather than known for certain but all in all I highly recommend it to Christians who are determined to know the truth.

Inspiring and Fascinating 5 by .. Jason Kyle Richie (Hazard, KY)
"The One Year Christian History" presents 365 stories of importance to Christians down through the ages. They range from the Christ's Passion in 33 A.D. to the stories of reformers, missionaries, soldiers, pacifists, hymn writers, martyrs, and others. The list covers topics as varried as pacifist Anabaptists who died for their faith to the conversion of Mitsuo Fuchida (see the book "From Pearl Harbor to Golgotha") to the inspiringly sad letter a martyred missionary wrote to her family during the Boxer Rebellion. People as diverse as G.F. Handle, William Wilberforce, Billy Graham, and Gladys Alyward appear in the book. While not perfect and leaving out many important Christians and events, I recommend this volume as an interesting and fascinating roll through events in Christian (especially Protestant) history.

Christian History- One Year Book 5 by .. Diane L. Hilliker (Sacramento, Ca. USA)
It's an awe inspiring book. I can't just read one a day and I've given out several to friends.

Great and inspiring resource 5 by .. B. Prather (Dallas-Ft. Worth)
This book was given to us by friends. It is fascinating, and the stories are inspiring. We read it every day as part of our devotional. We have given copies to friends and adult children. Very worthwhile.

Interesting bites of Christian History 4 by .. Scottso (Greenville, SC USA)
The One Year Christian History is not an exhaustive "greatest hits" of Christian History nor is it intended to be. What it is is a book that offers bite-sized glimpses into the people and events that make up the rich history of the Christian faith. Although I would not recommend this book for anyone looking for an in depth daily devotion, I would recommend it for anyone who wants an interesting book laid out in an easy to read format for daily reading.

Start your day off right ! ! ! 5 by .. Lydia A. Hudson (Texas)
Over the years I have read and studied the Bible. however it wasn't until I read Breakfast with Jesus" that I got true insight into passages I had read over and over, Mr Laurie makes so many of the stories and passages easy to understand.

This really is a good way to start your day, each chapter is only 2 pages, it will lift you up and help you deal with the problems of your day...because you know you have Jesus leading the path for you.

A Beautiful and Necessary Book 5 by .. Luke Reynolds ()
Shirley Brosius has written a beautiful and important book that I would highly receommend for every woman (and even man!). SISTERHOOD OF FAITH provides a stunning array of strong Christian women (365 in all) who have powerfully influenced the world for the better. From Abigail Adams to Catherine Marshall and more, Brosius insightfully captures the essence of their different committment and courage, and she reveals their power through her words. Each woman's story also includes a helpful Biblical verse and a question for thought. My wife and I very much appreciated their stories and the way in which they inspired our own. In a society that is often rocked by demeaning culture, Brosius's book shines as an example of love, courage and risk. It is, indeed, a beautiful and inspiring work.

Very Inspiring 5 by .. Pamela DeShazo ()
I highly reccomend this book, it shares very interesting stories about others experiences with life, very upbeat and inspiring.

Excellent Reading 5 by .. Trudy Barton (Rialto Ca)
This just a great book, and I liked the way it was delieved so fast.

This Book Surprised Me 5 by .. Brenda Nixon (Ohio)
At first glance, I thought this was just another devotional book written by the women on the cover. It surprised me that it is not a devo but a collection of inspirational short stories, written by the author, about women who have made -- some who are making -- a difference in the world. Then I discovered the alphabetical order of names, making it an easy reference to locate a woman and read about her. The enormous variety of women was a surprise; one funded a seminary, "Biddy" Chambers published her husband's sermons, one was a martyr for Christ, some were preachers, monarchs, reformers, stay-at-home moms who founded companies, others today are singers, songwriters, and evangelists, and one is our First Lady. What a surprise to discover the scores of websites and resources listed in the back. I'm pleasantly surprised with the easy-to-read format and challenging "My Response" question at the end of each short story.

As a professional speaker and writer on child behavior, I recognize many of my colleagues. This book is well-written and enlightening. It's definitely a delight and a keeper!

The Birth to Five Book: Confident Childrearing Right from the Start

You have got to have it! 5 by .. Kimberly Messinger (USA)
I was so inspired by the pages of Sisterhood of Faith. Each page tells of women making a difference for the cause of Christ. Sometimes we look at our lives and struggle with our day to day issues. When I begin my morning reading a page from this book it helps me put my life into perspective. The women of this book took their ordinary lives and focused their efforts towards the cause of Christ. If you are a housewife that needs encouragement, a woman in ministry who is struggling with her call or someone who wants to start her day being uplifted, this is the book for you! You have got to have it!

I checked this out from the library and after reading it I have to buy it (for future reference - as my children grow older). Her godly wisdom and insight reflect on each topic and gives inspiration to women (even if you are not a mom, the first chapter about being a wife is inspiration enough). I intend to buy this for my sisters and all my friends as they begin to have children as well! Thank you Ellen!!

Through my reading of this book I found many helpful tips on things to do w/ my kids. However, I purchased this book thinking it would center more around the "Christian" part of the title. It doesn't. This is a book for any mom but it fails to address many spriitual issues facing the christian mom.

Like "Let's Have a Tea Party", this book is written from the point of view of Emilie Marie, a little girl who is basically Emilie as a child--passing along information Emilie has learned as an adult .

Great book 4 by .. (Canada)
This is a very cute book. It is more for older kids than preschoolers (I bought it for my daughter who is 8) It was worth the money and my daughter enjoyed it very very much, she even brought it to school and the teacher loved it as well.

Sensitivity in text and illustrations = charming book 5 by .. R. Tiedemann (Bellevue, NE USA)
Dear Ms. Barnes,

Thank you so very much for A LITTLE BOOK OF MANNERS: COURTESY AND KINDNESS FOR YOUNG LADIES. It has made all the difference in our lives.

One evening my husband and I experienced one of the most embarrassing moments of our entire lives when we took our granddaughters out to dinner. I suddenly realized that they simply had not been taught some pretty basic manners. Modern parents are so busy with two careers and hectic schedules, I suppose.

Imagine how thrilled I was to find this book and how even more delighted to discover that when they read it, both girls took the lessons to heart and began to practice them. It saved me the further embarrassment of telling their parents about the painful incident. You back me up on that one: "Don't point out other people's bad manners," -- remember? Of course, grandmothers have special advantages in that area, but tact and sometimes even reticence is often the better part of valor.

"Five good reasons to write thank you notes!" and
"The heart of all good manners is the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." What brave and wonderful things to write to youngsters in a society that sneers at manners and religion as "sentimental" and "old-fashioned."

Because of the lessons here -- from thank you notes to how to entertain friends to telephone manners to introductions and party manners and more -- we are now proud to take the girls anywhere. Their introductions (which we had fun practicing) are truly graceful.

Another very important point you make is to treat brothers and sisters like friends. That is, with respect. Practicing that one little idea can change the entire atmosphere in a home.

Thank you, Emilie Barnes, for a very important book. This one was so successful for us that I bought the companion volume, A LITTLE BOOK OF MANNERS FOR BOYS and look forward to seeing equally triumphant results among our grandsons.

Michel Sparks's illustrations are colorful and delightfully whimsical. The visual appeal and emphasis they add to the text makes this a very special book indeed.

Thank you again for the lovely and sensitive addition to our children's library and to our lives.

I wish she would write a book for boys too. 5 by .. Rebecca Johnson (Washington State)
Excuse me, could I please tell you about a book I just read? Well, this is what Emilie Marie would say if she could walk off the pages and into your life. She also believes that the heart of all good manners is the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is a little girl you would happily invite over for a tea party!

This is just an enchanting book for helping young ladies learn courtesy and kindness. Emilie Marie introduces herself in a most polite way, then explains how her Aunt Evelyn has been helping her practice her manners.

This book helps girls to learn how to meet people, shake hands, answer the phone, be a good friend and so much more. I loved the section on the heart of Good Manners. I must say we adults could learn a few things from this book. Emilie Marie learns how to write thank you notes and how to answer invitations to a party.

To give this book to a little girl is also a way to give the gift of happiness to all those who know her. Michal Sparks has illustrated the pink and yellow pages in the most charming way possible. The blue bow on the cover is just adorable.

Thank you for reading my review and I really hope you will buy this book for someone you know. I bought it for my nieces and they love it. I must say they are turning out to be polite little ladies themselves.

It was so nice to meet you.

~The Rebecca Review

Lovely and effective! 4 by .. ()
My child went from exhibiting the most atrocious of table manners to conducting herself at table with perfect grace! After reading this book, she was eager for opportunities to practice her new manners on the telephone and at the table. Knowing "the rules" made her feel confident. Framing the need to be respectful of grown-ups as an issue of manners rather than power has made her rethink her behavior at school as well. Granted, this book takes an old-fashioned approach to proper behaviors (it is, for example, gender-specific, as the title clearly shows), but it has affected the way my behavior-challenged 6-year-old (though it's geared toward a slightly older audience) thinks about her actions. The illustrations are beautiful, and the prose -- from the perspective of a fictive childhood Emilie Barnes -- engages the socially-conscious child's mind. I only wish there were more, and that boys could be privy to this way of thinking about social interactions as well.

The girls loved it! 5 by .. ()
Manners are such a lost art! I used this well-written (and very cute) book to teach a class on manners to a group of girls. Needless to say, they had a blast while learning valuable information. I would highly recommend it for the little girls in your life.

Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul is an outstanding and inspiring book by everyday real people. The stories will make you laugh and cry and make you feel better about yourself and the great country we live in. A must read for everyone whether your feeling happy or sad,
Christian or not. I can't wait to enjoy my next helping of Chicken Soup for the Christian Soup II.

A great "feel good" type book 5 by .. Maria (Pennsylvania)
This was a great chicken soup book. I liked how almost all the stories were uplifting, not depressing. There were so many wonderful stories that I couldn't even pick my favorite. It almost seemed like each story I was reading was the best! There's only one story I couldn't even talk about without crying, the one about the two little kids buying the gold slippers for their mom. This book makes you think about what it means to be a Christian, and how we should live our lives. I'm going to read Chicken Soup for the Christian Souls 2 next. I didn't get my fill yet of these amazing stories. If this book sounds like it's something you might enjoy, then trust me, you'll just love it!

Love it! 5 by .. Goldielock ()
We have a lot of the Veggie Tales movies, this book goes very well with them. My kids love it, and I like that they give scriptural references to each story. Each chapter promotes a certain value that all kids need (adults too)!

A great way for little kids to read the Bible! 5 by .. Marelize Bruner (Cleveland, OH)
My three-year old daughter just loves VeggieTales, and with this Bible Storybook, she is getting the best of both worlds. Each Veggie story is followed with the actual Bible story and a great message to boot. We love it!

Not a Bible, but a VERY good book! 4 by .. Tanya Dennis ()
Creative and fun characters fill the pages of this book with vivid colors. This book combines 21 Veggie stories we know from their videos and books with the Bible stories that inspired them. It is organized in the similar order as one would find them in Scripture. The table of contents even divides them into the Old and New Testaments.

Each chapter begins with a "countertop" introduction. Bob and Larry describe a current problem then lead into the Veggie story. Now we know Goliath was not really a giant pickle, so immediately after the story, the book presents the real Bible story with selections taken directly from New International Reader's Version of Scripture. Bob and Larry return "countertop" to wrap up the application with a memory verse.

Here is a list of the chapter stories and their correlated Bible stories.

The Ballad of Little Joe --- Joseph, Genesis 37-45
Babysitter in DeNile --- Miriam (saving baby Moses), Exodus 1-2
Frog Wars --- Moses (and the Exodus), Exodus 3-14
Josh and the Big Wall --- Battle of Jericho, Joshua 5-6
Gideon Tuba Warrior --- Gideon, Judges 6-7
Dave and the Giant Pickle --- David and Goliath, 1 Samuel 17
King George and the Ducky --- David's Selfish Sin (with Bathsheba), 2 Samuel 12
Esther, the Girl who Became Queen --- Esther, Esther 2-8
Madame Blueberry --- David's Heart (of thankfulness), Psalm 34
Rack, Shack & Benny --- Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel 3
Daniel and the Lions' Den --- Daniel, Daniel 6-2
Jonah --- Jonah Runs Away, Jonah 1-4
The Stable that Bob Built --- Jesus is Born, Luke 2
Where's God When I'm Scared --- Jesus Walks on Water, Matthew 14
The Story of Fibber-o-loo --- The Good Samaritan, Luke 10
Larry's Lagoon --- The Prodigal Son, Luke 15
An Easter Carol --- Jesus is Risen, Luke 24
Minnesota Cuke --- Wise Advice, Romans 12
Lyle the Kindly Viking --- A Cheerful Giver, 2 Corinthians 9-15
The Gourds Must Be Crazy --- The Conversion of Paul, Acts 9
LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed --- New Life ... New Ways, Colossians 3

What I Like: The Scriptural parallels. It's great to be able to point back to the actual passages in the Bible. The memory verses are great! My kids love VeggieTales, so this book was an instant favorite in our house. The authors find very creative ways to relay lessons in ways kids can easily understand. Also, collecting all the videos can be quite expensive. This is a great way to get a lot of the stories for one low price.

What I Dislike: Initially, I was disappointed with some of the stories -- outer space, super heroes and Gilligan's Island don't belong in a Bible -- but the more I read it, the more I liked the book! The problem was my expectations. Please note this is not a Bible, but a Bible storybook. My only complaint now is with the "Frog Wars" chapter. VeggieTales did a much better job telling the story of Moses in "Moe and the Big Exit." Unfortunately, that video was released after the publication of this book.

Overall Rating: Very Good.

Tanya -- Christian Children's Book Review

VeggieTales® Bible Storybook 5 by .. Dr. Tami Brady (Calgary, Canada)
Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and all their friends share the stories of the Bible in a new and creatively unique way. Children will be completely entertained while learning how the stories of the Bible are relevant to their modern lives. Parents will love that their children have a new set of role models that actually understands and connects to children.

Veggie Tales Bible Storybook includes 21 stories from both the Old and New Testament. Each story is prompted by a particular situation that one of the Veggie Tales crew experiences such as dealing with a bully, being jealous of a sibling, wanting tons of presents, etc. This incident leads into a themed tale, from wild west themes to star wars, based loosely on a Bible story. The Veggie Tales characters are the stars of the show. These renditions tend to be quite entertaining in and of themselves. More importantly though, they make use of what children already know from movies and modern media and connect them to Biblical stories. Each Veggie Tale finishes up with the real Bible story and then follows up with the original lesson of the story as the characters as talk about what they learned.

Veggie Tales Bible Storybook will quickly become a family favorite that book parents and children will equally enjoy. An innovative, fun way to teach morals to children.

A Must Read!!! 5 by .. L. M. Gilliland (Norfolk, VA)
This is a must read for all parents, seasoned or new! I recommend this book to every pregnant woman I meet! I love Dr. Sears!!!

Use good sense 4 by .. Pastor and Preacher (Colorado Springs, CO)
As a seminary educated pastor, I do recognize that a number of Bible verses are used out of context (a problem not unique to this book). At the same time, Christian critics of the book also seem to poorly interpret Scripture in their critiques.

This is my recommendation: Weigh what is said against the best psychological research and Scripture. As it relates to Scripture, understand that many verses are used out of context, but what is said in the book may still be consistent with Scripture. If you think a teaching in the book is against Scripture, find a verse to support your idea, then ask yourself: Is this verse/passage really against this idea or am I making this up? Use direct teaching passages (like NT letters), because you are likely to find "principles" that the Bible isn't really teaching if you think you "found" a parenting principle from a story, parable, OT Law, or prophecy in the Bible.

No book is perfect, but overall I certainly like the book. It is well worth considering.

Was Jesus bottlefed and forced to cry it out? 5 by .. Singer39 (TX)
Was Jesus bottlefed and forced to cry it out? Didn't think so. It's funny how some Christians think that it is damaging to the family unit to respect your baby's needs. Those needs being: Breastfeeding, bedding close to the mother, and not having to cry it out. This book explains how we as humans were designed by GOD to feed our babies with our breasts and keep them near us when we sleep.

Damaging to Family Unit 1 by .. Sharon Stuart (Qld Australia)
I bought this book thinking it would be a good health manual with a christian perspective but I was very disappointed.

From a christian perspective, I found it shocking that it took several scriptures out of context in developing their permissive-parenting philosophies. Young babies are to be centre of the family (and marriage), rather than equal members. No helping babies to develope in the way they should go. I think this book could be damaging to the core unit called "family" if fully embraced.

Try a more balanced parenting style (not the extremes of demand or schedule feeding) like that which is found in "Secrets of the baby Whisperer" or "Babywise 1".

Worth The Purchase 5 by .. S>D>C> (Palm Coast, fl)
I enjoyed reading parts of the book. Very extensive and detailed. It showed the viewpoints of what a doctor would suggest and what the Lord suggests. In addition, it gives you bible verses and suggested prayers. It has made me more focused to be an effective Christian parent.
