Product Description Hundreds of stylish illustrations and clear, concise instructions are used to illustrate this flexible system of pattern cutting, offering both students and designers the means to achieve original, well-cut designs. The children's clothing market has changed remarkably during the last decade, and this standard work has been totally revised and rewritten to reflect new developments, including the increasing importance of knitted fabrics and the fashion consciousness of today's mothers. Customer reviews Fantastic, the one and only!!! by .. M. Dekker (TX, United States) Babywear & children's clothing will no longer have any secrets after you have used Winifreds' book. It explains how to make all styles for all ages and then some. It's easy to use and written in plain english! The best I've ever come across and I would highly recommend it for both beginners and advanced patterns makers.

Customer reviews Flat pattern alteration only. by .. Lady Corsetra, costumer () I have been looking for Children's drafting, to make historical costumes for my child, so I thought this book would be useful.
It wasn't useful at all.
This book is meant to have a supplement which includes master sloper patterns.
You then use these slopers and modify them to achieve certain design elements as shown in the book.
The master sloper patterns that are a supplement are not available.
If you are looking for information on drafting children's patterns, this isn't the book for you.
If you want to modify slopers or any other pattern (like ones you can buy in your local fabric store) you may find this book useful.
Over all, there are better books out there for both issues.
Of course this book is outdated as well, being a couple of decades old.
Wonderful Children's Book by .. L. Creighton () I found this to be a wonderful addition to my collection of design and patternmaking books. The illustrations are adorable, and the writing is clear.
Another reviewer stated that this book would not be useful without the previous book. I have not read the previous book, and I did not have a problem understanding this one at all. It might be that if you do not have sewing or patternmaking knowledge, it would be confusing to just jump right into this book. Also, I'm assuming from the title of the previous book that it contains slopers for children. If that's all that's holding you back, you could just purchase a generic McCalls pattern, and work from that.
It was nice to see some details that are "retro," and there was a good explanation of how to face some garments.
Brilliant but redundant by .. Naja Voorhoeve (Jan Juc, Australia) 'Children's Clothing: Designing, Selecting Fabrics, Patternmaking and Sewing' has the potential to be an extraordinary book. The style is clear, instructions are easy to follow and, as if by magic, the initially baffling techniques of garment construction and design are revealed. Selma Rosen's book can make it for you, but there is one warning. This book is completely unintelligible to the un-initiated without its companion volume 'Master Patterns for Children's Clothing' also by Selma Rosen and published by Fairchild Books, 1984. For those of you who don't know 'master patterns' or slopers in the American vernacular and blocks in the British are the sine non qua of garment design. In other words, without a master pattern you won't be doing any designing, patternmaking or sewing. And, since 'Master Patterns for Children's Clothing' is out of print, it is unlikely that the lucid style and gorgeous illustrations that comprise Selma Rosen's 'Children's Clothing: Designing, Selecting Fabrics, Patternmaking and Sewing' will be used for anything other than an expensive door jam. It beggars belief that Fairchild Books continues to make available 'Children's Clothing: Designing, Selecting Fabrics, Patternmaking and Sewing' in the knowledge that it is effectively redundant without additional information.

Product Description Master Pattern Included KWIK?SEW's Sewing For Children is for girls and boys ages four through twelve. Sewing for children can be a very rewarding experience in many ways. It gives you an opportunity to be creative with appliqués and colour blocking. At this age children usually want to dress like their friends, yet they are developing definite tastes of their own and want to show some degree of individuality. They want a sweatshirt like their friends, however, the use of colour blocking can turn that garment into something special, it will still be a sweatshirt, but it is their sweatshirt. [KWIK SEW's Sewing for Children Book Cover] When you are sewing for children, try, if possible, to get them interested in the project, get them involved by taking them with you when you purchase the fabric. If they choose a particular design or colour, they are more likely to love the garment and want to wear it more often. Some children may express a desire to pick out or design their own appliqués. Like you, they also have a desire to be creative. Maybe the first item will not be the perfect garment you envisioned, but you have started them on what could be a rewarding hobby that will last them a lifetime. Older children, with your guidance, may want to sew some of the seams themselves. Help them by encouraging them and try not to be critical, after all they are the ones who will be wearing the clothes. Try to make it a fun project so that you both enjoy it. This not only applies to girls, but also to boys, many boys are just as interested as girls and in addition, they may be fascinated by the sewing machine itself. How does the machine work? How does the needle pick up the thread? In addition to the fun you will have sewing for children, an additional reward is the money you will save. Most people believe that as children's clothes are much smaller than adult's clothing, they are also less expensive. This is not the case. While they may be somewhat less expensive, children's clothes cost a lot of money when they are purchased in your local store. A master pattern is included to create entire wardrobes such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pants, shorts, dresses, skirts, sleepwear and much more. This multi-sized master pattern is printed on durable white paper with colour coded lines for each size. The patterns are printed on both sides of the paper so we could include as many sizes and designs as possible. Trace the patterns using tracing paper or tracing cloth made from transparent pressed fibers. The master pattern includes five unisex sizes. Patterns are made to fit specific body measurements with ease allowed for comfort and style. All of the master pattern pieces include 1/4? (6 mm) seam allowances. This is the best seam allowance to use when sewing children?s clothes. You can use a regular sewing machine or a serger/overlock machine. Before you trace the pattern, choose the size by comparing the child?s measurements to the measurement chart. Choose the size closest to the height, then compare the chest, waist and hip measurements. If in-between sizes, choose the larger size. The book gives instruction for making changes on the pattern for the proper fit. Some of the pattern pieces are interchangeable so you can make many variations of the garments using the same pattern pieces. Also included are tips and ideas to add that personal touch including appliqués and colourblocking. Customer reviews A whole wardrobe in a short amount of time by .. Homeschooling Mama () This pattern book will allow you to make clothing for your child in a short amount of time. They are very basic patterns that I highly recommend for the beginner.
Yes the pictures are dated, but everything in this book can be made to look modern with a minimal amount of extra effort. All it would take for most of the patterns is a change of fabric. There are so many pretty fabric prints out now. Any style issues can be easily fixed as well. My daughter did not want the elastic cuffs on one of the sweaters. But it is so easy to leave those off and just hem the sleeve without cuffs at all.
And so you know what you are getting, the pants, shorts, and skirts are made with elastic waists and the patterns must be traced onto something before being cut, as the pattern papers are double sided.
Kwik sews Sewing for children by .. Patricia F. Keifer (Elko NV USA) Bought these for a friend of mine. I had used these patterns for my children and loved how easy it was to create beautiful and unique clothing for my children.
I Love It! by .. Eileen Millsap (Missouri Ozarks, USA) This is the only pattern book you need to create a child's basic wardrobe. It has traceable patterns in five sizes from 4-5 (xsmall) to 12 (XLarge).
Make pants, shorts, tops, jackets, hoodies, dresses, skirts, nightgowns, and pajamas. The possibilities are endless!
You only need a basic knowlege of sewing, as the instructions are very clear and easy to follow.
Good Basic Patterns by .. Charli Olney (Soda Springs, ID, USA) This is a great jumping off point for your own creations. Let your child or grandchild help pick the fabrics. Make use of embroidery, trim, applique, buttons and beads. Good for play or dress.
covers a lot of basic patterns by .. C. Neiding (Ohio) Although from the cover photos you may guess that this book has outdated patterns in it, they really are basic patterns that are always useable for things like T shirts, sweatshirts, nightgowns shorts, etc.

Product Description Helps you build your skills as you crochet for kids. With easy to advanced designs, this title helps crocheters at various skill levels create sweaters. Customer reviews Wow! Wow! Wow! This book is the best kept secret in crochet! by .. Anne (NY) I never heard anything about this book until I read that review of the book on about.com. I have never seen a pattern book that has 12 great designs before. That is amazing! What I don't understand is why they didn't put the best designs on the cover? The front cover should have had the Ivy League, Pink Fantasy, and Denim-looking cardigan. The book also has a surprising number of designs for boys. There are 6 designs that boys can wear. Basically there are 6 designs for girls only and the other 6 designs are really unisex. If you buy only one crochet book this year, make it this one.
Great Gift for Grandmothers by .. T. G. Tully (Maryland USA) My mom loves to crochet and to make things for my preschooler, but she's never ventured beyond scarves and afghans. The designs in this book are so cute and the instructions so clear that she will finally be able to make some sweaters! Hmmm...which one to ask for 1st? Now if I can only get her to consistently put her "made by.." tags on things.

Product Description This book presents a nostalgic look at baby and children's wear from the Victorian Era to the first half of the 20th century. It chronicles the changes in children's fashions over the decades and centuries, from the popularity of tartans and plaids in the 1880s, to Knickerbocker suits and box pleated tunics, introduced by the Victorians, to the ever popular and enduring sailor suit. Over 300 stunning, full color photographs showcase the many wonderful and unusual examples of vintage and antique children's clothing, along with detailed descriptions and pricing. From exquisite christening gowns made of cotton and silk, with beautiful embroidery and lace trimmings, to the poignancy of a baby's mourning outfit, this book is delightful and informative in its photography and historic content. It is a must have for anyone interested in the field of fashion and vintage clothing, as well as antiques and collectibles. Customer reviews Fans of Children's Clothing by .. Mary Beth Williams (Burke, VA) If you enjoy collecting antique and vintage children's clothing, or if you are a textile devote, or if you just like to look at how children were dressed in the past, this is the book for you. It is a wonderful reference as well as an interesting "coffee table" book. As a collector, I learned all sorts of fascinating tidbits. Thoroughly researched and well written, the book is a terrific addition to my library on textiles and children's clothing.
A great vintage children's clothing reference book! by .. () This is a very well written book with excellent photographs. It is a must for all lovers of antique children's clothing. I recommend it highly.
The Well Dressed Child, A Wonderful Insight Into The Past. by .. Stacey McDonald (Pittsburgh, PA. USA) This is an awesome book from cover to cover. I was enchanted with the text and the many fabulous pictures and have read it over and over again. I especially loved the Christening section and drooled over the pictures of the many exquisite gowns. I am thrilled to have this beautiful book to add to my antique book collection. I have found the author Anna MacPhail also has an equally superb web site (www.[...].com) which I have started to visit on a regular basis.
This is a lovely book. by .. () Anna MacPhail's book is a work of art in itself. Every page is glossy photo paper, and only one page has no photos. Each photo is in color, (even the black and whites are sepia toned), and some of the items are priced, giving collectors an idea of value. This book has very little text, so if visual history is your thing, this book is superb.
A TRIP INTO THE PAST by .. () I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. IT WAS EDUCATIONAL AND INTERESTING TO READ. THE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE BEAUTIFUL! IT WAS SUCH A PLEASURE TO SEE A BOOK LIKE THIS. I HAVE SEEN OTHER BOOKS ON VINTAGE CLOTHING BUT THEY ARE DISORGANIZED AND NOT FACTUAL. THIS BOOK TOOK ME BACK TO A TIME I THINK I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO LIVE IN. ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS IN MY COLLECTION.

Product Description Featuring 10 heirloom knitwear patterns for children, this collection celebrates the artistry and craftsmanship of two of the knitting community’s most prominent designers. The intricately designed patterns, suitable for children from their toddler years to their preteens, include cardigans and vests, cable pullovers, and adorable dresses. Each pattern provides detailed instructions and easy-to-follow charts, including information about yarn specifications, such as ply, wraps per inch, meters to the gram and kilogram, and yards to the ounce and pound. The exquisite fashion photography of finished garments shows off the creations worked in rich, glowing colors. In addition to patterns, short excerpts from beloved children’s books are interspersed throughout.
Customer reviews Splendid knitting designs for children by .. () As a mother of two daughters and a passionate knitter, I am very glad I bought this book. There are splendid designs for boys, for girls and some which are wearable for both. The knitting instructions are easy to understand, though average knitting experience is needed. Some difficult techniques are explained, f.e. the "vertical double decrease". I think it's particular good to have four sizes with each design, so you can knit the same design for two different-aged children. Each design is photographed in detail, not only to make a beautiful picture but to give the knitter an impression of what's awaiting him. What seems to be a bit of a problem if you want exactly the same knitting as in the book is that they have used Alice Starmore yarns only. Nevertheless an inspiring book! If you want to knit something special for your child, buy this book.
A Must-Add to Your Knitting Library! by .. () First off, I'll admit to significant bias, as I am a huge Starmore fan. That aside, this pattern book is one of the Starmore team's best, and is a worthy addition to a knitting library (even one, like mine, already stocked with every Debbie Bliss book). I won't begin to confess how many projects' worth of yarn I have stockpiled already, and yet it was all I could do not to run out TODAY and acquire more for several projects in this book. Some knitters will recognize a few previously published patterns for grown-ups, resized for children highly successfully (Sand Dollar from the now out-of-print Pacific Coast Highway, for example, finally makes sense as a young girl's sweater dress). Others are wholly new and as exquisite as anything we've ever seen from these designers. (Secret Garden is next on my "yarn to buy" list.) As a mother of two boys and aunt of two nieces, I also was pleased to see a nice balance between feminine, masculine and unisex patterns. All in all, a fabulous treat for knitters with children anywhere in their life!

Puddleton Shine (Whittier, CA USA) I've truly enjoyed this book as I'm in the process of writing my own novel and needed a good source for period clothing. This book gave me some great ideas on how styles were designed for one of America's most famous catalogs, Sears. Also has great pictures of hats/bonnets. What's even more fun is how much stylish clothing cost in those days! A definite recommendation!
