Product Description

More uncommon common sense from the bestselling author of The Art of the Start.

In Silicon Valley slang, a “bozo explosion” is what causes a lean, mean, fighting machine of a company to slide into mediocrity. As Guy Kawasaki puts it, “If the two most popular words in your company are partner and strategic, and partner has become a verb, and strategic is used to describe decisions and activities that don’t make sense” . . . it’s time for a reality check.

For nearly three decades, Kawasaki has earned a stellar reputation as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and irreverent pundit. His 2004 bestseller, The Art of the Start, has become the most acclaimed bible for small business. And his blog is consistently one of the fifty most popular in the world.

Now, Kawasaki has compiled his best wit, wisdom, and contrarian opinions in handy book form. From competition to customer service, innovation to marketing, he shows readers how to ignore fads and foolishness while sticking to commonsense practices. He explains, for instance:

• How to get a standing ovation
• The art of schmoozing
• How to create a community
• The top ten lies of entrepreneurs
• Everything you wanted to know about getting a job in Silicon Valley but didn’t know who to ask

Provocative, useful, and very funny, this “no bull shiitake” book will show you why readers around the world love Guy Kawasaki.

Interesting and Pleasant Reading About Business and Life 3 by .. Joao Cortez (Porto, Portugal)
Guy Kawasaki addresses in a fun and entertaining way several issues that range from how to start and run a company to how to communicate and how to find meaning in life. The style varies a lot from story telling, advice lists, digressions and interviews. The reason I'm only giving it three stars it's because the book is rather long (over 450 pages) and unfocused - at the end of the book you wonder what the book is really about. It provides an interesting reading nevertheless.

A Breath of Fresh Air. This is the most realistically inspriational book I've read. 5 by .. Laura Harrison ()
Reality Check is fun to read, and I was inspired while I was laughing. Seriously. What a fantastic, no-nonsense, to-the-point guide to building an idea or an organization. As a founder of a start-up, I found that reading it gave me great ideas, smart insights, and the courage to have a sense of humor about it all. As far as I'm concerned, this is a must-read and a great gift to someone starting a new venture or adventure.

Old fluff put in an entertaining format. 3 by .. Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA)
Guy Kawasaki is a genuinely warm, engaging, intelligent and articulate man. I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times at MacWorld trade shows.

However, Guy Kawasaki is a career self-promoter. He has made a living for many years repackaging standard business advice in an entertaining format and peddling it as new to the legions of people seeking a business success formula.

More power to Guy for making a living at it, but it doesn't alter the nature of what is between the covers here: old advice, with a lot of it being nothing more than commensense.

Two irritating things about Guy's otherwise excellent writing style. He has a real problem with gender pronouns. Even in academic writing that tends to be excruciatingly politically correct, I've never seen anyone go to such extremes in using "she", "her" and other feminine pronouns. It's creepy, weird and utterly unnecessary. Certainly She would understand if Guy backed off a bit. Then there is Guy's cuteness with a couple of euphemisms: for example, he takes the common expletive for bull manure and adds "-takke" to it. Once may cute, especially among your 4th grade classmates. A couple of dozen times and it is truly annoying and leads you to believe the author may be a fourth grader.

As for Guy's advice . . . well, there's a reason why so many self-help and business success books are perennial bestsellers: people want guidance and advice And guy provides it in a witty, entertaining manner.

But virtually all of it has been served up hundreds, if not thousands, of times before by other authors. Some of what Guy offers up is pure nonsense without a shred of evidence to support it: it is just politically correct, like his overuse of the feminine. For example, he directs that companies "diversify" in their hiring, implying that if your workforce isn't statistically proportionate, you are doomed to an early end in a "Bozo Explosion". While it may be politically correct, the proposition is not supported by evidence.

Straining for material, Kawasaki resorts to interviews with other authors and academics, not a few of whom are cranks. One parses a conspiracy theory that would give a tinfoil hat wearer a run for their money.

Finally, Kawasaki tries to cover the waterfront with his advice. And the plains. And the mountains too. And the oceans. Everything. If you're looking for millions to start your company, Kawasaki has advice. If you're looking for a job, Kawasaki has advice. If you're the boss of a successful company, Kawasaki has advice.

The quality of the advice in every area, however, is suspect. First, much of it is common sense. If you have to buy as book to learn common sense, you have a problem. A lot of what Guy writes has been written about a zillion times before.

Take, for example, some of his advice about getting a job in Silicon Valley. Show up early, Guy says. "Get to your interview at least thirty minutes early because (a) you might hit traffic . . ." Actually, I think Guy means to say leave for your interview early because you might hit traffic, if She is not watching over you. Point is, who needs to buy a book to learn this? I love this line: "Answer the first question "How are you?" with a great response. For example, a great response is, "I feel great. I'm really anxious to learn more about this job and tell you about myself, so that we can determine if we're a good match". Very impressive: I'm sure the interviewer will be bowled over by your sincerity.

As one of his later chapters, Guy has one entitled "Are You an Egomaniac?" I think Guy is - and he appears to make a good living from it.

On the whole, 'Reality Check" is no worse than then some advice books and perhaps is valuable to simply reassure people that common sense is still a valuable commodity. But for business success tips, Guy doesn't offer anything you haven't seen before. I'd suggest holding off on this one until it is remaindered or just get it from the library.

Truth, Wisdom and Humor - Guy Kawasaki's Best Book Yet 5 by .. Jonathan Fields (NYC)
Rare is the time I pick up a nearly 500 page book on business that's keeps me up reading after everyone in the house has already gone to bed. But, with Reality Check, Guy's hit a home run.

Truth - I've read hundreds of books on entrepreneurship, marketing, careers, yadda, yadda, yadda. Heck, I've even written one of my own (Career Renegade: How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love). And, you can pretty much tell within the first 20 pages the difference between books written by people who've "studied" entrepreneurship and those written by people who've "lived" it.

The first offer great advice...that works in a vacuum. The latter reveal what it's really all about. They speak the truth, based on what the writer has lived and breathed. As a lifetime entrepreneur and writer, that's the book I want to read. And, that's the book Guy has delivered.

Wisdom - 461 friggin' pages of it...and it's not 300 pages of juicy stuff and 161 pages of self-serving fluff. It's ALL juice! What do I mean by that? It's not about theory. Reality Check delivers you into the conversations, presentations, strategy sessions, critical decisions and actions that nearly every budding entrepreneur wrestles with.

Then, Guy serves up actionable, specific, aggressive do's, don'ts, tips, tasks, strategies and scripts based on real live experience sitting on both sides of the funding table, the boardroom table, the podium...and the plywood garage table.

I stopped taking notes and dog-earing pages when I realized I was doing it on every page!

Style & Humor - If you're looking for dry, professorial, textbook style writing...go away, that's not Guy's style. And thank God for that. Like all of Guy's books, this one is irreverent, edgy and engaging. And, Guy sense humor really comes through in this one, too. Enough to keep a 500 page tome fresh to the end. In fact, the Foreword 2.0, written by Dan Lyons a/k/a Fake Steve Jobs, had me laughing out loud and e-mailing people to strong-arm them into buying the book just to read the intro.

Look, you can keep reading reviews or you can just buy the darn book now. Which you choose will very likely determine whether you're a real entrepreneur...or you just like reading what people who write about them think.

Guy Kawasaki is a golden god 5 by .. James Lawson (Texas)
Guy Kawasaki is so awesome that I own one of his books that's written in Yiddish. And I can't even read Yiddish. It's *that* good. I mean, I got it for free *from* Guy Kawasaki but still I would totally have bought it. And technically I didn't so much "get it from Guy Kawasaki" as it is that I stole it out of his garage. Which was enormous. I mean, really it was shocking. Who needs a garage that big? Apparently people who need to keep Yiddish versions of their book.

In closing I hope one day I'm successful enough that people want to steal Yiddish copies of my book out of my enormous garage.

Love, The Bloggess

PS. This book is good too.

IS IT ME OR IS IT THEM?

Maintaining control in today's hectic workplace is a challenge -- everything is lean, competitive, and uncertain. What does it take to survive?

Making Work Work is Julie Morgenstern's most important book yet. Through the mastery of brand-new strategies, Morgenstern shows you how small changes in your thinking and behavior will help you achieve the seemingly impossible -- boost your value, increase your job security, and afford you the time to still have a life.

Morgenstern has helped clients of all levels take control of their work lives in every industry: from corporations and nonprofits to government agencies and small businesses; from executives and assistants to educators and salespeople. She's learned that no matter who you are, happiness at work involves feeling appreciated, in control, successful, and in balance. And achieving that is possible.

People rarely look at their jobs from a psychological and practical perspective at the same time, but Julie Morgenstern does. This book mirrors the individual consulting services she provides by showing you how to start with yourself and then tackle the more complex external issues of working relationships and the job. For every obstacle you encounter along the way, Morgenstern diagnoses the source of the problem (is it you or them?), and with insight and warmth, she provides simple grab-and-go strategies. These are small changes anyone can make to improve performance and efficiency at work.

At its core, Making Work Work is about your relationship to your job. With the reliable, methodical process taught in this book, you will:

• feel less trapped and more in charge • be able to make a bad situation better • search for a job that's a better fit for who you are.

This is a provocative and life-changing book that will help you boost your clarity, confidence, and performance in any economic climate. With Morgenstern's guidance you can find a way to make work work.

Waste of Time 1 by .. jeffery Morris (Newport Beach, Ca)
Ironically a book on time management and organization takes 72 pages to get to the first time management tip, "focus on tasks that are closest to the revenue line". The first chapters are wordy cliché discussions such as work life balance, develop an entrepreneur mindset...blah blah blah. I found myself skimming the paragraphs looking for any specific original material. She has endless bullet points and numbered lists that are shallow random thoughts that read like a collection of Oprah magazine articles. Even worse are the self indulgent verbose romance novel examples, including this gem from page 165 "A news writer for a national trade magazine, Claire was a five-foot-one dynamo transforming her industry. Working alone, she was a one-women wonder, churning out cutting edge stories from an office as wild as her mane of curly black hair. Claire's eyes sparkled with a sense of adventure, and her face was always on the verge of a huge, warm smile....." This dribble goes on for 3 more long paragraphs. Morgenstern undermines her credibility with these exaggerated fairy tale descriptions. She should purchase a copy of Strunk and White Elements of Style, save us the sophomoric prose and write a 50 page concise, focused time management and office organization book. A terrific alternative is 4 hour workweek by Timothy Ferris which covers many of the same points in a more compelling, concise and convincing manner.

Great For Employees of Small(er) Businesses 4 by .. Rudy Neufeld (Fresno, CA United States)
Small or large, the tasks and responsibilities every organization must complete to be successful are pretty much the same. But employees of smaller businesses have a wider range of responsibilities than the more specialized staff of larger firms. Small business employees--and their owners--continually are confronted by many more types of tasks requiring attention. Additionally, smaller businesses tend to "run lean" with limited back up if someone is absent. These factors tend to foster an unfocused and inefficient workplace.

This book offers employees in such situations with insights and strategies that show them how to be more productive and efficient. If done well, it will also result in better work life balance and a less stressful workplace.

Two caveats, particularly for management and business owners:
1. Woefully inadequate attention (in this book) to the value of planning as the most effective way to minimize "fires" and "the tyranny of the urgent";
2. No apparent consideration for time and attention necessary for maintaining the culture and values of the company (e.g., customers always come first, or great performance every time or measure twice, cut once, etc.)

New way of e-mailing 4 by .. Maxim Masiutin (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova)
"Never Check E-Mail In the Morning" is not about e-mail, it is about time management, self-discipline and productivity in general. The book helps you in self-assessment, helps to embrace your work/life balance, to develop entrepreneurial mindset, to choose the most important tasks, to create the time to get things done, to control the nibblers, to organize at the speed of change, to master delegation, to work well with others and to leverage your value.

Like other popular self-help books, "Never Check E-Mail In the Morning" has no "references" section, which I don't like. Once you have completed this book, you have no direction what to read next. Julie Morgenstern, the author of many time management books and a monthly columnist for O, The Oprah Magazine, and a guest on television and radio programs, probably supposes that you will continue with her further publications.

When the author writes about e-mail and the productivity issues that relate to e-mail, I fully agree with the author. She offers to break counterproductive habits and stereotypes related to our way of emailing. She covers the problems related to e-mail much better that "Hamster Revolution" by Mike Song.

I highly recommend "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and "Time Drive" by Gleb Arkhangelsky in addition to this book.

do what works best 2 by .. J. R. Fielhauer (Durham, NC USA)
Lets start with the bad. The book is mostly stuff you've already heard or is completely obvious to you. Morgenstern's advice for organizing information is to 'do what works best for you'. Gee, thanks for the hot tip.

The book starts with an address to those who work far too many hours. I work an average number of hours but if I can be more efficient I'd like to see if I can make that number smaller. So I read the first part and didn't really get anything from it. As the book progresses she gets into how time is wasted and how to avoid the things and people that waste your time. This is the heart of the book's message because time is our most precious commodity. That's why I found it counterintuitive that the author's language was... far from concise; I was surprised by the amount of text devoted to the biographies of her clients. When you say something like, "meetings can be a large waste of time," we understand what you mean. You don't need to illustrate that point by telling us about someone who worked a lot of hours and attended many pointless meetings. Remember, our time is precious and this isn't exactly Literature; you would think Morgenstern would be more conscious of how much of our time she's taking.

Toward the latter half of the book Morgenstern meanders into a topic that begins to contradict her earlier ideas. When she was describing situations that waste your time she hit on the idea of other employees wasting your time. But towards the end she gives us examples of people who don't make enough time for other employees and so one can only conclude that the unifying message is don't give too much time but also not too little. This is in all capacities the same advice for how to organize your data: 'do what works best'. So in the end Morgenstern hasn't really come up with solutions. She addresses a variety of different problems people have but her advice in the end is always the same: pick your head up, figure out what's important and do it without wasting your time. Again, not a very profound message and not one that should take 272 pages to explain.

Now on to the slightly more positive. The title of the book is quite provocative and an excellent advertising scheme. Sorry to those of you who didn't realize it's the same book and now own two. The title can be explained as follows: If the first thing you do in the morning is check your email then there are any number of ways that you'll be diverted from your critical tasks to deal with all the little things your inbox has for you. Email creates a false sense of accomplishment for people because in the span of an hour or so you're likely to deal with a large number of different issues (likely half of them are personal) and so you feel like you've accomplished quite a bit but now that it's almost time for lunch you really haven't done much at all (including writing a review for this book on amazon). You've been in the office but you probably haven't done anything that makes money for your company - anything worth telling your boss about.

Lets face it. For a number of jobs not checking your email in the morning is absurd. The underlying idea, however, is that at work you spend too much time multitasking and not enough time getting that really important job done. Multitasking slows total productivity and it hurts the quality of each individual piece of work. The real skill to learn is to avoid clicking that forwarded link for a youtube video.

So Morgenstern recommends that you do one thing at a time and that you plan when to do these things based on when you have energy during the day. She also tells you to let others know your schedule so they'll be more accommodating. This again, depending on the job may be totally unrealistic but I guess if you're in charge you can set whatever rules you like.

If anything in this review is unclear to you then perhaps you should buy the book but if it all makes sense to you then you're better off looking elsewhere. You're welcome.

Morgenstern revolutionized our business 5 by .. Real Estate Agent (Los Angeles, CA)
Nearly a year ago, I bought Never Check E-mail in the Morning and implemented the practices prescribed throughout the book into our busy real estate office. We were drowning in in our crazy workloads, and struggling under the pressure of always being available to our clients. With e-mail and BBs you can never turn off, especially in real estate where it's completely client-based. Morgenstern's techniques really revolutionized the way we did business and helped us to better manage clients' needs and our own sanity. Her strategies are so practical and address all the problems of working in a 24/7 global market. I definitely recommend it!

Only a few years into a career marked by dazzling early success, Tarek Saab s life took a dramatic turn with his selection for Donald Trump s reality show, The Apprentice. Viewers soon noticed something unusual about Tarek. Throughout the chaos and pressure including several boardroom showdowns with Trump Tarek displayed a forgotten kind of manhood. In a new book, he shares his hard-won insights into love, work, and manhood and their source in a faith that is ever old, ever new.

The biggest problem by far facing men in their twenties is the crisis of manhood. Offering a completely new take on the so-called quarter-life crisis, Tarek describes his reluctant confrontation with career, relationships, and spiritual disillusionment and reveals the surprising truths he learned about what it means to be a man.

A distinctly modern-day Confessions, Gut Check is the wry and candid self-examination of a man whose life, despite its extraordinary twists, is full of lessons for ordinary young men. Tarek s captivating tale reveals a young man with many talents and temptations whose saving grace is a relentless pursuit of truth and the daring to be counter-cultural. Gritty, comic, utterly believable Gut Check is not the usual Christian fairy tale.

Gut Check is a manual for manhood lived the hard way. It is a book for men who never read and for men who think they have read it all. If you think you know what you really want, are you ready for a gut check?

Good Start....loses steam quickly. 2 by .. J. Shiring (Dayton, OH United States)
The writing style is makes it readable. I certainly was into the book at the beginning. I could relate to his experiences, point of view, frustrations and guilt. About midway through the book, he makes a leap based on his guilt and frustrations, but loses connection with the reader on the whole story. We all have those moments of aloneness in a crowd where we question why we're where we are. He makes that connection, but we're left to wonder about how he makes the shift in the real world. And I was left wondering why he never addresses the role of organized religion or the foundations of Christianity, which I think any young Christian deals with. I recommend the first half of the book to initiate reflection, but the rest of the book left me cold.

Wonderful Rare Example of Manhood, but book is titled wrong... 5 by .. Dolans6 ()
I read this book after watching Tarek interviewed on "Life on the Rock." I wanted to give it as a college graduation gift but thought I better read it before promoting it. I think the book is wonderful, honest, and a much needed message today, but it should not be limited to "twenty something men." I believe it's content could inspire many men I know of all ages.

Required Reading for Today's Men (Not Just Catholics, either) 5 by .. J. Kehoe ()
As a man in his 40's, I can say that Tarek Saab has very accurately described the challenges that face men today. More importantly, he has described how to overcome these challenges and find true happiness. And, although the title refers to men in their twenties, this book is applicable to anyone who wants to live a good life. This is a quick and very engaging read. My sixteen yr old son read it before me, and also liked it very much. I am Catholic and Saab's discussion of his faith journey resonated very strongly with me. However, even if you are not Catholic, this book should be very interesting and helpful!!!!!!!

Exceptional 5 by .. M. Creavey ()
This book is outstanding and very timely. In a world which is in dire need of heroes and saints, Tarek's book comes to us as an inspiration to young men to break through the deceitful lures of our modern world and to live out authentic, virtuous manhood. He offers this snapshot of his college and business years and the struggles that came with them, and the battles he describes are all too familiar to so many. This book is a must read for anyone who senses that deep yearning for more than just "business as usual" and the riches of this world, and who strives to be the person God sent them here to be no matter the cost.

GREAT book for any guy in the high school or college years, or even after 5 by .. C. Gautsch ()
My mom threw this book on the counter a few weeks ago and said I should read it. So after a week or so I picked it up, and it was hard to put down. Great read, but more importantly, great message. Mr. Saab really does an incredible job of explaining how important priorities are in our lives, and how God needs to be our first priority, always, and his story of how he came to realize this is very interesting, entertaining, and even inspiring. I very highly recommend it; it's one of the best books I've read in a very long time.

Code Check is complete guide! 5 by .. D. Byce (San Diego, CA United States)
I was suprised how complete the codcheck series is. If you live/work in California you will need the special California edition

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes 4 by .. Edward Pohlman (Toledo, Ohio)
This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

CODE CHECK COMPLETE 5 by .. E. Day ()
Code Check Complete should be on every job site. A comprehensive book with illustrations on the latest building codes

Code check complete review 4 by .. Dennis Krentz (Lake County, CA)
good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.

Well pleased 5 by .. OnlineBuyer (Norfolk, Va.)
This book is well made, obviously for field use, more importantly the information is very well organized and presentation is easy to understand. I own all the code check series and this just ties in with the rest. Illustrations are excellent and documentation and references are great. A definite positive addition to my library.

a very good book 5 by .. Y.K. ()
I bought this book to understand better the modern age in the hotel industry. I run a small hotel in Greece with my family and now we are building a new more up to date one. This book helped me to understand the hotel industry as a whole and the way it is changing. It covers with detail many issues, from GDS to bed making. There are hundrends of examples that make it easy to understand what is being discused. It is abstract at the beginning of every chapter and becomes more practical (how to do things) further on.
Although the books draws most cases and examples from big properties, I found it very helpful and discovered many ways to improve the service we offer in our small hotel.

It is one of the books that I will keep for reference and the best I have read so far, among those that try to cover almost every aspect of running a hotel. I can not think of someone in the hotel bussines who would not find this book intresting and worth reading.

Very good book! 5 by .. S. Souza (Boston, MA USA)
This book showed me how to think differently when people put me on the spot, because of my faith. Very good book!

Good Basic Review of Apologetics 4 by .. S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA)
This is a good basic apologetics primer for its intended audience - teenagers.

It has some very good information about the historical evidences of Jesus and his resurrection. It is also good at exposing several of the myths about Christianity.

This text is certainly very basic in comparison to McDowell's 'Evidence That Demands A Verdict', C.S. Lewis' 'Mere Christianity', or Lee Strobel's books, 'The Case For Christ' and 'The Case For Faith'. I would recommend all of these books for adults or teens looking for more indepth treatment of evidences for the Christian faith. As a starting point for high school or younger kids, this is a pretty good one.

Not perfect, but very enjoyable 4 by .. Barton Paul Levenson (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
I had a good time reading this book, and I think the authors came up with some very convincing arguments. I disagree with them on some things -- for instance, although I'm a born-again Christian I have no problem with evolution. But I don't expect to agree with everything in a book, and there's no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater. (What a horrible image that is!)

Bordering on Fundamentalism 1 by .. Brandon Weaver (Vineland, NJ United States)
The purpose of this book is to act as a FAQ concerning religion and how it fits into their life. According to the authors, they do this by bringing to light evidence that proves that the way of Christianity is the true path for a happy life, however the supposed evidence is merely Bible passages. The rest is the author preaching almost archaicly, about the danger of the devil's temptation and the glory of God. It doesn't have the free-thinking and open feel that is necessary for a book targeted towards teenagers. The rest of the language feels dated, as is expected for a book written in 1992, however I doubt it would have impacted teens then either. It isn't funny, it isn't "real", nor will it satiate curious minds about what Christianity really is about. Really, for a book targeted at an audience with questions regarding their faith, it is remarkable that it is so reliant on the reader blindly believing it.

Josh McDowell has done it again! 5 by .. Chancellor Carlyle Roberts, II (Buffalo, NY United States)
Once again, Josh McDowell has produced a phenomenal work that serves to help Christian teens live godly lives in an ungodly world. This time, Josh tackles various wicked worldviews (any worldview that is not Christian is wicked) and modern philosophies such as moral relativism. It even tackles certain evils within Christianity such as the ungodly notion that one must check one's brains at the door when one enters the Church (meaning when one becomes a Christian).

This book should be taught in every teen Sunday School class and youth group.

Top Quality and consistant 5 by .. Peter Walker (Southern California USA)
As usual the book is top quality and invaluable in my profession. Peter Walker, Building Inspector 22 years.

A Must Have 5 by .. S. Koepper (Long Island, NY)
Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.

I can't follow the format 1 by .. M. Leitch ()
The book is awful. I cannot follow the format and don't understand what they are trying to communicate. There are a few bits of helpful information - but overall this book will do nothing for me. The "cute" drawings and jokes are not appropriate for a reference on electrical codes. And why dedicate so much space the the history of electricity?

Don't waste your money. Go with something professionally prepared. This flipbook was not.

Outdated Material 2 by .. Ricardo Zelaya (Orlando, FL USA)
This book is mostly general information. Many of the figures do not identify the wires e.g. hot, neutral, ground. The section on Grounding is many years out of date, and would present an electrical hazard if followed. Most modern homes nowadays use PVC piping thus rendering all this advice on this page useless and dangerous for the layman. Because plumbers use nonconductive material to make connection watertight, using pipes for electrical ground is outright dangerous. Do not use this book because some advice is good, but some is not. Not knowing what advice is the good one may put your life in danger.

Useful in spite of itself 3 by .. ()
If the purchaser actually needs to know the UBC reference numbers, they will need to do some searching, because all too often the Section number cited in the Code Check series isn't correct. I do not have a copy of the International Building Code so I can not judge how the actual references correspond to the citations listed here, but one wonders how the authors could get the UBC citations so wrong, so often.

Because the Code Check series cover residential applications of the Code quite well, I suggest it be used as a study aid for Code Students. Because the surface is designed to be erased many times without leaving ghosts, the student will need to make paper copies. If the sudent goes thru the lists, they should mark down the actual section references on the copy. When the student is finished, he or she will have a good idea of what the code requires for residences and how to use the UBC (or the California Building Code) to locate those requirements in the code.

Your next-door neighbor's two-year-old broke your most expensive vase, and your neighbor hasn't offered to replace it. Your best friend expects you to shop at the boutique she just opened, though her very pricey clothes look terrible on you. And your sister says she needs $1,500 to send her child to creativity camp, but you think what your sister needs is a job. What do you do?

Such tricky and emotionally charged dilemmas involving money are ubiquitous. Yet few of us know how to handle them. In Isn't It Their Turn to Pick Up the Check? Jeanne Fleming and Leonard Schwarz - the authors of the enormously popular "Do the Right Thing" column in Money magazine and the blog of the same name on CNNMoney.com - dissect a host of thorny, sometimes comic, inevitably awkward, and frequently infuriating money-and-ethics problems that arise among friends, relatives and neighbors.

Here's just a sample of the situations they respond to:

  • Who gets Grandma's jewelry?
  • I lent money to my niece, and now my brother wants a loan.
  • My rich friend keeps encouraging me to do things I can't afford.
  • Our brother is stealing our inheritance.
  • Our freeloading friends are driving us crazy.
  • I just made a bundle of money, and I don't want my family to know.

Fleming and Schwarz also report on the results of two groundbreaking surveys designed to illuminate the money-and-ethics problems we confront every day. The surveys reveal, for example, just how many of us have a friend or relative who's a freeloader or a deadbeat; how common we believe it is for someone to lie, cheat, or pretend to be loving in order to be in someone else's will; and the percentage of men - compared with women - who say you should never marry someone who is deeply in debt, no matter how much you love them.

Isn't It Their Turn to Pick Up the Check? offers a fascinating tour of the secret life of other people's money disputes and delivers witty, down-to-earth money advice for dealing with all the maddening problems any one of us could confront at any time.

Excellent Topics 4 by .. Melfi (Omaha, NE USA)
Well written book with a very nice chapter list...so you can look up specific topics as you find necessary.

don't lend this to anyone. 5 by .. Jacquelynn Wendeler ()
this is a funny but also serious read. it gives advice on all borrowing, to dining with cheapskates.
if you lend this book to anyone in the borrower or cheapskate category, make sure you get a deposit from them. preferably the same amount the book cost, because you will probably never get it back and have to buy a new one.

Great book! 5 by .. E. Torello (Wakefield, RI USA)
This is a great book for anyone with a friend or family member that has money issues that they can't keep to themselves (in other words, it's a great book for just about everyone!). I highly recommend it.

Wonderful advice on avoiding financial disputes with friends and family! 5 by .. Samuel K. Rosen (New York City)
We all face problems with friends and relatives in borrowing and lending money. Bequests and gifts can also lead to acrimony that shatters families and friendships. This book explains, with humor, common sense, and the results of well-thought out surveys, how to resolve those issues and, more importantly, how to avoid them in the first place. I highly recommewnd it to anyone who wants to avoid the friction and ill will that can result from dealing with the everyday money matters we face in our daily lives.

an amazing guide for the money and ethics issues that plague us all 5 by .. B. Nguyen (santa monica, ca)
I am part of the camp of people who are often flummoxed over money issues concerning family/friends/co-workers/neighbors/etc. Reading the insights in this book about all-too-familiar situations compels me to have it on my person at all times.

The book includes questions and advice a la Dear Abby but is of course about all the gray areas we encounter when we loan/borrow money, break or make fiscal promises, inherit (or hope to) money - you name the situation, and it's in the book!

What's particularly fascinating is that authors Fleming and Schwarz include quick snippets of research results (most of the research they conducted themselves) about people's experiences and attitudes around specific money and ethics situations. The data isn't so heavy-handed that you feel like you're reading a social-psych book.

Most of all though, I love the no-nonsense advice that was also peppered with humor and wit. Makes for a really fun read.

Outstanding! 5 by .. Dan McKenzie (Sunnyvale, CA United States)
This book is outstanding. I have shared it with everyone I know and the universal sentiment is that the book is unique, profound, funny, and thought-provoking. There is a legitimate reason the book is so popular.

I never write reviews, and I am writing this for no other reason than to offset "Auntie's Boy" vindictive review. Talk about a shill campaign. It's the pot calling the kettle black. The new edition comes out, and immediately he posts the same useless tirade about a book he clearly hasn't read. And he talks about abusing the Amazon ratings system. I guess that is to be expected from a baby-killing Obama supporter. "Down with morally upstanding decent human beings! Long live moral degredation!"

The Shills Are Alive! 1 by .. Auntie'sBoy ()
My my my....the Disciples of Fundamentalist Fanatic Tarek Saab are at it again! If it were not bad enough that the first edition of this "book" had a review page where 95% of the "reviews" were by first-time reviewers who all without exception gave the book falling-all-over-themselves 5-star raves. So what happens? The second edition's ink is not even dry yet and the exact same people all rush here to post another "rave," the majority of which within one 24-hour period. Want the rundown? Here are 6 of the the first 8 reviewers: Jerry W Anderson: Never reviewed on Amazon before. Geroge T Dillon: Two reviews 8 months apart on Amazon, both for Gut Check. E Giuffre: Two reviews 10 months apart on Amazon, both for Gut Check. K Stannford: Two reviews 10 months apart on Amazon, both for Gut Check. M McClane: Two reviews 10 months apart on Amazon, both for Gut Check. David J Coletti Jr: Two reviews 10 months apart on Amazon, both for Gut Check. Then we have a woman who actually HAS posted on Amazon before, but her other book reviews were books praising Sarah Palin and Trashing Barack Obama-draw your own conclusion. Check out the posts for the original "Gut Check" and you can see that these people will all suddenly close in and add comments to this post within hours as if they just "happened by," but I am not going to feed into it by responding. I will just let this shillery speak for itself; honestly, Amazon really should have a checks and balances system to prevent these abuses of their rating systems. PS: What Would Jesus Do? PPS: This book won't even be published for over a month!!! LOL

Quite Different Than I was Expecting - Subtly Deep 5 by .. Jerry W. Anderson (Webster Groves, MO USA)
This is truly the best book I have read in a few years. I'm not going to do this book justice, but after reading it, I felt I really knew Tarek, and, more importantly, want to be a man like he is. He described the book in one of his interviews as a book about lukewarmness. He is totally honest, and a person can sense that in how he explains his problems and the parts of his life which were good, and the contradictions he had to work out. I totally agree with the 2nd edition subtitle change - this book is definitely NOT just for 20 year olds. I'm 47, and it is totally applicable to me.

I normally do not care for "celebrity" type conversion/reversion type stories, but this is very different. This book would be excellent for both men and women starting college. For a high school student I think the parents should read first.

Like I said, this review does not do the book justice. To me, this book is already a classic. (Oh, and I have bought books from Amazon for years and have never written a review until now.)

Profound, Funny and Relevant... 5 by .. George T. Dillon III (Virginia)
As an educated professional, and life long reader, I've had the opportunity to read many books. For the most part, you can separate literature into two categories, fiction and non-fiction; however, every once and a while I have the pleasure of reading a book that goes beyond the two dimensional pages that it is written on. This type of book surges with the unique literary power to reach into ones soul, challenging its reader to embark on a journey of spiritual change with the ultimate end being authentic happiness and eternal peace.

A Gut Check For All! 5 by .. E. Giuffre' ()
Regardless of your age or sex, this is a meaningful book for anyone who is confronting life, love, adulthood, or just being in this materialistic world.

This personal story of T. Saab's is just the kind of wake up call needed for those of us who are coming of age in the New Millennium. It lifts you out of the noise of secular chaos, elevating your mind and heart to the fundamental things of life: God, Truth, and Purpose.

Saab's powerful message told with complete honesty, yet humorously, hits the nail on the head that "in the end we are nothing." Yes, because "that IS the beginning

Streaming headlines, round-the-clock broadcasts--we live in a world of twenty-four hour news. But lately, most of what we read and hear is either negative, biased, or both. Cutting through the gloomy reports and liberal slant are Dennis Keegan and David West with their brand new book, Reality Check: The Unreported Good News About America. Contrary to what the cynical reporters and politicians say, Keegan and West prove that America is still a shining city on a hill, with a low unemployment rate, high GDP, and enviable democracy. These are not opinions, but facts--based on statistics that the media isn't reporting because of political agendas, industry competition, and limited resources. In Reality Check, Keegan and West cut through the bias and spin to reveal:

* How our twenty-four hour news culture gives us more inaccurate information, not less
* Why the U.S. economy is doing better than we realize
* Why the recent rhetoric and politics of change may do more harm than good

In this age of information saturation, the need to question and critically think about what we're reading and hearing is more important than ever. In Reality Check, Keegan and West show us how to be discerning consumers and why the news about America is much better than the media would have you believe.

A Necessary Book 5 by .. Bruce R. Tuomala (Fairfield, Connecticut)
The way to right thinking about anything is through critical analysis and reasoning, looking at all sides without pre-conceived notions. The authors of Reality Check have taken that approach, and it is an excellent read. By focusing on facts rather than perceptions, and weighing ideas against each other, they have provided a refreshing contrast to conventional thinking and misconceptions regarding the important political, economic and social issues of the day. While America has its challenges, and things are obviously worse than when the book was published earlier this year, it remains the best place on earth in terms of freedom and political/economic opportunity, as the authors clearly show.

If nothing else, this book will expand your thinking and worldview about things that matter, while providing a refreshing contrast to the distortions of the media. I highly recommend it.

Must read 5 by .. Cliff Marticorena (L.A., Ca.)
Still reading but great info. so far. Worth reading if you want to really understand how it all works and be able to debate these hot topics with some facts.

Truth Will Out! 5 by .. William E. Haynes (Los Angeles CA)
In a time when the availability of an unprecedented number of sources does not assure accuracy of information, this fully documented and comprehensive coverage of the key issues bearing upon the state of our Union, fills a crying need.
The quality, timeliness and pertinence of this report makes it a must read for all who seek to cut through the morass of politically biased reporting.
You really owe it to yourself to read this book before you choose your candidates this fall.

Truth IS Important 5 by .. Susan Sheesley (East Kingston, NH)
Reality Check is a very important book for everyone in this country to read. It does a thorough job of counterbalancing the mythes and lies that are so commonly put forward daily in the news.

As well,it is informational and easily readable for anyone who wants to understand basic economics and how they relate to our personal world. Reality Check is definitely worth the time it takes to read!

A refreshing perspective 5 by .. Esther E. West (Fremont, NH)
This book contains information that doesn't seem to be available any place else. It takes a look at the facts on which present day current events are based, and reports the information in an understandable form. So much of the news that is being reported now is based on emotion and feelings that it is difficult for the average person to sift through it all and know what the facts really are. I would recommend that you would read this book if you are interested in knowing how we got where we are as a country and how you can respond with integrity.
