We've been playing Wizard for about 10 years now. It's a great
"trump" card game. If you like Hearts or Spades, you'll love Wizard. Our kids have been old enough to play with us for a few years now (hence the need for a new deck!)The instructions say for ages 10 and up, though I think most 8 year olds could play this. But it's definitely an adult favorite too! Another nice feature of Wizard is that you can stop and take up the game another time...just save the score sheet.

I started playing this with friends from work. We had a huge group and tournaments even. That's how I've gotten addicted. I ran across this while playing around on Amazon and had to have my own deck with instructions. Only problem is that I live in a family of non-game people, so I now have a hard time getting enough people to play. Need at least 4, and the more the merrier.

There's nothing here that can't be accomplished with a regular deck and the rules. That said, this is the hands-down best game of cards I've ever played. I may be naive in saying that, but our family gets together about once a week and plays.
I've played other games of trump and while skill is involved, there's a lot of luck involved too. Wizard is uniquely skill oriented. And while you might still get a lucky hand, even players who are unluckly dealt consistently poor hands will still often win the game, as scoring is based on the number of tricks you plan on taking.
No question about it, the price of the deck is worth the rule sheet alone. Fantastically fun game.

"101 Best Family Card Games" is a clear, consise and informative book. It explains the rules and course of play for many card games. The best part of the book is the section on why families should play together. I also found the card games explained in the "For the Family with Young Children" to be a great guide and a wonderful source for my young children.

I agree with another reviewer, the book needs a refresh. Hard to find the game you're looking for by just browsing (rather than using the index). Note that the copyright still says 1974 so it does feel a bit out of date. Was disappointed that it didn't include rules for Spades.

Well, the information is a little old and doesn't cover some newer games either. Although it has a lot of card games in it my one complaint is the books layout. It reads like a novel and games are referenced in the index. Needs a much better layout and bold titles. Other than that it's not bad but really needs a revision.

This is a great reference book to have in your home. Before I purchased this book, there were many occasions where questions came up about the rules and scoring of card games. I wished I would have had that book then.

Simply put, this is absolutely one of the worst instructional books I've read. If you know nothing (or next to nothing) about card games -- like I still don't after reading this book twice -- avoid this very confusing book. Let's look at an example. The following is taken from the first page of the chapter on Hearts: "The game [Hearts] revolves around tricks. In a trick, everyone takes turns playing one card. Whoever plays the highest card in the suit led (the suit of the first card played) picks up all the cards played. The person who wins the trick leads anything he likes from his remaining cards to the next trick, and the process repeats itself until all the cards have been played." I simply could not understand this paragraph no matter how many times I read it, until I consulted a friend good at Hearts. This is typical of the arcane writing throughout this book. It's simply not easy for a dummies. In fact my friend was totally lost when he read this paragraph. The way he described it to me was just so much clearer. The book does cover a wide range of card games. Unfortunately it does a very poor job at teaching you how to play these games. Often the author discusses strategies without even explaining what things are and what the rules are, leaving you totally clueless and obfuscated. I haven't read a book as frustrating as this one in a long time. I highly recommend you stay away from it.

This book has some fun games! It has popular games like Hearts, Rummy, and Cribbage. It also has games that I have always wanted to learn how to play, like Euchre and Canasta. In all, the book discusses over twenty games. The layout of the book is a discussion about games. Even if you have felt confused before in reading through card game rules, this book is an excellent introduction to playing card games. It goes over everything that happens in the game, from the rules, to strategy and tips, to history of the game-a fascinating book. Because it goes in-depth into each of the games, you will not find one place in the chapter that has a concise list of the rules. The rules are scattered throughout the discussion of the chapter. I found it useful to check a book of rules from the library to read along with this book.

This book covers the basics for understanding simple to hard card games. Having a baptist upbringing and being an only child I've missed out on learning how to play card games. This book is very easy to understand and now when I play card games on the computer like Hearts, I now know how to win. The rules for card games have been updated to what average people now currently play.

Best reference for family games! My family used it to clarify rules regarding Double-Pack Pinochle. It came in handy for my team to win a game because scoring was in dispute, such as, how much does a quadruple Pinochle count? Great book.

There are easier to understand and more up-to-date descriptions of gameplay for most of the more popular games on the internet. The book is particularly weak on diagrams, which simplify understanding of many of the games tremendously. I would consider this book to be useful as supplementary information only; it would not be my first choice for learning a new game from scratch.

I first bought this book about 20 years ago. It is an excellent reference especially now that our children are of age to play advanced card games. I was looking for some new games to learn several years ago, and discovered what has become one of our favorites, Oh Hell. This book is essential if you play cards. Also included is good reference for various board games such as chess, checkers, backgammon, and some fun games for young kids.
