This guide treats books like commodities to be bought and sold to make money. Almost the entire focus is on the BIG money you can make scouting books. It reminds me of those no-money-down real estate seminars where you can supposedly learn how to make BIG money! (Drop me in any city and give me a map marked with bookstores and a $5 bill and I will have a $1,000 the next day!) The author brags about how much he made by buying such-and-such a book and selling it across town for three times as much. In one case (he refers to it twice, actually) he made enough on one book to take "a vacation to Europe." If you love books, this is not for you. If you love money, you can probably make more in a different activity. Incidently, values seem exaggerated throughout.

The cover is misleading: it looks like it will be about antiquarian books. But it's actually about modern firsts, so more recent, jacketed-type books. If that's what you're into, this book is great. It covers everything from how the publishing industry works to the all-important detective skills required to identify a real first edition. And a lot of super-arcane details in between. It even mentions in passing a lot of authors and titles that I've never read, so it was a great way to discover new reading material. There's also a lot of ground covered regarding "scouting" and selling books, which will be super-practical for people going down that road.

I didn't expect much when I ordered this and the corresponding social studies workbook. What a nice surprise! Really nice activities that encourage thought and exploration. The book starts on the subject of mammals, then moves into birds, and on from there to other animal families and beyond. The nicest part is that we had just begun watching the documentary series "The Life of Mammals" as part of our home curriculum when this came! The material is very grade appropriate, both here and in the social studies workbook. I highly recommend this and any other book from this company. Far more than I expected for the price!

This book contains multiple pages (about 1/3 of the book) that must be cut apart in order to complete. The problem is, the next activity - which often also requires being cut up - is printed on the back of the page! Do not buy this unless you are prepared to photo-copy the entire book. No where in the product description does it mention the book being reproducible, so this is not what I expected. It is poorly organized; subject are tossed in at random. I suggest you avoid this product.

I couldn't improve upon the previous reviews - I agree with them all! Recently, I had the opportunity to give this book to several friends and family members as shower gifts. It was a huge hit! Every person made a point to tell me how special it was ... sometimes more than once. Apparently, their extended family members had come across the book and fallen in love with it, too. This book is a beautiful story about the first moments of a baby's life. It is written from the baby's perspective as they sense their new environment and meet their parents. The baby learns how much they are loved by their parents. It is filled with wonderful black and white photographs of newborns and they show the love parents have for their baby. There is one photo that almost makes you feel like you are holding the baby in the picture and the baby is looking straight into your eyes; it reminds me of when I held my own children. This book brings tears of joy to my wife every time she reads it. The last few pages offer a place to write some memories of the birth of your child, which your child would cherish as they too read this book in years to come. It would make a great gift to any parent, especially those that are expecting or just gave birth. Get several copies; you'll want to give this one to all the new parents you know.
