I make my money with my writing, and as a result, I'm always on the lookout for ways to improve at the craft. The McGraw-Hill 36 Hour Course may not be the expert guide to improving your communication skills I was looking for when I bought it, but it certainly is an excellent book chock full of information.

This book was created by relying on some widely-known business experts as examples, and quotes them frequently throughout the guide, really giving a lot of pertinent business advice throughout in addition to writing tips. You'll learn how your communication affects every aspect of your business, and it will really help you get an appreciation of not only what to do, but it serves as an excellent reminder of why you're learning these skills.

Overall, this is a great guide for someone who thinks that they're not as good as communication as they'd like to be, but for a writer, or someone well versed in communication skills, this guide is not as essential. It's still a good read, and a good reminder of basic strategies. Highly recommended.

This is an outstanding business writing book -- high on substance, low on fluff, with just enough sidenotes and tangents to make it entertaining. Davis covers a lot of material in this quick read. I especially appreciate his advice on writing memos/emails for maximum effect and response. He provides simple formulas for common types of communication: request for info., claims, good news, bad news. And he recommends putting down points in the order the reader can use them, not the order in which you think of them. (Should be obvious, right? No so in the business world.)

He offers bad writing examples and good revisions. Check out this example:

"Subject: Roadway identification in parking lots

During our Safety Coordinators' meeting the point was made that with our energy conservation program (during the hours of darkness, fog, etc.) roadway identification in our parking lots is hazardous. The recommendation was raised that we might use a fluorescent-type reflecting paint. Would you please investigate the feasibility of this recommendation and advise me as to your decision on implementation?
Your early response is appreciated."

Awful, right?
Here's his revision:

"Subject: Fluorescent paint in parking lots

Can we use fluorescent paint in our parking lots to make traffic lanes easier to see?

It's a great book! Now that I follow his guidelines I find writing easier, faster, and a lot more fun.

I was really excited when I came across this book. I was a bit disapointed when I read it. There was some good information but it was on the dull side and much of it seemed to keep repeating. It's still worth reading but just don't get your hopes up for it to be great like I did.

Wilma Davidson's _Business Writing: What Works, What Won't_ is that rare book that fully addresses its title's premise. This book will have you writing more effective business correspondence and documents right away.

As a freelance commercial writer, my work depends on skillfully communicating on point. This book shows how to do just that. Davidson minces no words, either. She finds the current state of business writing deplorable, filled with pointless buzzwords, passive voice, data overload, and too much pomposity. She gears her book to addressing those major problems and does so effortlessly.

You'll learn how to

* Restructure documents for quick reading
* Tighten sentences and paragraphs by eliminating extraneous words and phrases
* Use "real English" instead of business buzzwords that hinder communication
* Move from dull, passive voice to a more natural active voice that holds readers' attention

Business Writing: What Works, What Won't is a business writing book that indeed does work very well. The author gets right to the point and gives just the right amount of information on most business writing aspects, with a terrific section on e-mail and letters. She uses humor throughout the guide, making an otherwise dry subject more entertaining. More importantly, the book is full of useful examples that illustrate the rule, technique, or principle discussed. For example, she doesn't just urge the reader to use the active voice, she includes almost a dozen examples of the proper way to use the active voice (and avoid the passive voice). Highly recommended.

She covers all the major areas that most people need to work on to become more effective and efficient writers. Last but not least is the endorsement given in the forward by Janet Emig, who revolutionized the approach to writing being taught in school systems around the world today. Jack Appleman's 10 steps to successful business writing is a book that you will read, keep on your desk or laptop case, and use over and over again. Why? The book breaks business writing down into ten steps and then tells you exactly how to do those steps. For instance, when he says not to use stuffy words, he gives a list of stuffy words in one column and their suitable substitutes in the other. What is easier than that? The whole book is broken down just that way. It is great.

The Elements of Business Writing is clearly modeled after Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style", and it is a worthy addition. Authors Blake and Bly essentially have re-written the classic "Elements", and transformed it into "Business Elements". Lots of specific usage and style pointers, which I found very helpful. A quick read, may be somewhat of a review if you have written on the job for years, but this book also makes an excellent refresher for all the nuances that make writing go from good to great.

This book is supposed to be a new edition but there are only a few articles that have changed. Some outdated ones still remain. Unfortunately, there aren't any standards for what constitutes a new edition. This is a shame because students pay more for books that are almost identical to previous editions.

I'm an instructor of Business Communication and this is the textbook we utilize for the class. I find that most of the articles in this book are good ones; however, there is a lot of repetition, especially when they are referring to the writing process. YAWN. Boring. How many ways can you reiterate "clear, precise, and to the point" as the main idea?

Otherwise, some of the other articles in there are great for those beginning in the world of business writing.

This is a well-written, carefully organized book that belongs on desks across America! Topics covered include organizing before writing, overcoming writer's block, suiting letters to complex situations, and using grammar and punctuation properly. If I had to provide one criticism, it would only be that the book is too short! As a reader, I didn't tire of the useful sample letters and would have happily read more and more. A great reference for the tentative writer and a good refresher for seasoned writers, as well.

This practical classic of business communication works for multiple audiences from MBA students and project managers to undergraduate business students and international business working in English as a second language. The concise, clear entries explain topics, provide model documents, and cover an impressive range of alphabetically arranged materials.

While the new 9th edition features orange highlighted text, more weblinks, and a stronger section on visuals, budget conscious consumers can find plenty of value in this 8th edition. The basic principles of business writing remain the same - and same English grammar problems puzzle writers today as a few years ago. ESL students, by the way, will especially appreciate the short grammar tips and editing suggestions.

Bottomline: The Business Writer's Handbook should be on your bookshelf if you work in business, write business documents, or study business communication. If you can afford the 9th edition, buy it. Otherwise, pick up this classic in the 8th edition and save yourself some money.

It's going to seem strange that I "highly recommend" a book that I am giving only 3 stars. I hope I can accurately explain my reasoning. WRITING BUSINESS PLANS THAT GET RESULTS: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE by Michael O'Donnell only has a total of about twenty pages of text that actually explain to the reader anything about a writing a business plan that "gets results". The remainder of the book is nothing more than a well-constructed outline for writing your business plan.

To say all of that a little differently; you're not going to learn much by reading this book. That's why the low rating. However, once you have studied other more conducive books on preparing your business plan, this book is an excellent format for actually putting it together.

The book outline breaks your complicated business plan into bite-sized morsels by using modules for each topic. A word of caution. When using modules, be careful to tie each module together appropriately, otherwise the entire document will become discombobulated.

O'Donnell's book will make constructing and organizing your BP easier. But don't look to this book for the answers you need to make your BP a winning one that will garner the funding you are looking for.

This book is similar to others on the topic so if you have one book on writing proposals then some of the information will be redundant but a good book to have in your reference library.

Overall an easy read and places the process in a logical progression.

I had no idea how to write a business proposal. I followed this book to the tee...I now write major proposals for my company and my proposal kicked the ass of a couple of MBA's. There were a lot of red faces when I showed up my with version of a proposal. I essentially went from having no idea how to write a proposal to setting the bar on how to write a proposal, thanks to this excellent book.

Like Eating Your Vegatables... 4 by .. ()
This book is really good for you... just like eating your vegatables. Unfortunately, its not easily digested. This book provides a great method of preparing strategic proposals. The method is largely based on the Mento "Pyramid Principle" a book which is itself not an easy read (however, it is required reading at McKinsey, BCG, and other major strategy consulting firms. This fact should tell you instantly just how powerful a concept it is). However, if you're willing to hold your nose and chew slowly (I'm not willing to give up on the "eat your vegatables" analogy just yet), you and your proposals will be much more competitive. Since the book is far from an easy read, I'd suggest that you tackle it chapter-by-chapter with some time for rest and contemplation in between (divide it into "bite-sized" pieces, in other words). If you're looking for fast-food proposal fair, I'd like to suggest Robert Kantin's "Proposal Kit For Dummies" which, despite the title, is a terrific book on proposal writing for professionals -- particularly consultants. Overall grade: A-/B+.

Since my book is mentioned in a couple of these reviews, I thought I would respond.

I used Rich Freed's book for years in my consulting practice and MBA classes. It's a great book, and I *highly* recommend it. It's clearly one of the best treatments on writing business proposals available.

But comparing my book on proposals to Freed's is like comparing apples and oranges. My book is aimed at people who work in scientific and technical disciplines. Freed's book is written toward business applications. These two books are designed to work in two completely different arenas.

Buy this book. As an experienced proposal writer and consultant, I believe it's the best book on writing business proposals. It's truly innovative, and it offers wonderful strategies for winning contracts in highly competitive business environments.

The 2nd Edition Rocks 5 by .. ()
The first edition of this books is, as the former editor of Consultants' News remarks, "The most comprehensive treatment we've seen," and the second edition is even better, including (for example) important discussions on fees and collaboration. Most important, this book is about far more than writing business proposals. David Maister-like in spirit, it's a superior treatment about how to sell professional services. Although it addresses business proposals, most of the content is important for writing other proposals as well, but like most successful books on proposal writing, it focuses on one of the sub-genres, unlike more general treatments (Johnson-Sheehan's comes to mind) that in their attempts to focus on all proposals, do a poor job of treating specific kinds.
