Get the easy-to-use, illustrated guide to the 2006 International Building Code®.

As the building industry moves toward a single set of construction codes that have no regional limitations, architects, builders, engineers, and interior designers need an interpretive guide to help them better understand how the code affects their practices. The seond edition of Building Codes Illustrated fills this need by interpreting the updated 2006 International Building Code® (IBC) in a visual format that designers both need and understand.

This unique marriage of bestselling author Francis D.K. Ching's illustrative talent and Steven Winkel's code expertise provides an accessible, time-saving companion guide to the latest code. The visual presentation of information extracts the core portions of the building code that are most relevant for professionals and hones building codes down to the essentials. Organized to correspond with related subject matter in the IBC, Building Codes Illustrated enables architects, engineers, and other design professionals to quickly find clarifying information on the nonstructural provision of the IBC. You'll gain a clear and complete understanding of those sections at a glance through enlightening computer-rendered illustrations and succinct yet thorough interpretations.

There's no excuse for not being up to code. Avoid costly mistakes with the invaluable help of Building Codes Illustrated, Second Edition.

Clear, concise, and detailed illustrations. 5 by .. devan (Cedar Rapids, IA USA)
I had my 1880 home flooded in the Iowan floods of 2008. In rebuilding, I have the opportunities to straighten out a lot of "grandfathered" upgrades. This book has been helpful in both DIY's and contracting bids. Now I am getting a home that is safe, code current and still has the Victorian architecture that I loved when I first bought my house. I couldn't have done it without this book. It has save me thou$ands.

Great for IT exams, but you need UBC anyway 4 by .. Alexandra Betancourt ()
This is great if you just want a general view of UBC and IBC codes.
But, it constantly refers to the IBC for the specifics.
But overall, is a Building Codes for Dummies!!!

Easy understand and get to the point 5 by .. Ricky L (USA)
Interpretation of codes sometime is confusing. With the picture to explain, it is much easier to understand than just read the words. A picture is better than a thousand words!

Building Codes Illustrated - Understanding the 2006 IBC 5 by .. Oscar Wilde (Houston, Texas)
This is an excellent book. It makes it very easy to understand many of the issues addressed by the IBC. In a few minutes of flipping through the pages right after I received it I was able to clearly understand issues that I previously had to read over and over again in the code to try to understand. Any time I have a code issue now I first read the code and then look at the same item in this book to see if my interpretation is correct.

A bit basic for the professional, perhaps valuable for a student. 3 by .. Chris Salay (los angeles, ca)
Ching always does a good job of clearly illustrating aspects of design and construction, but in this case the book lacks depth. Only the most basic codes are included and it is of little or no help for the building professional.

It is what it is... 3 by .. T. Strayer (Oregon, OH USA)
Not really sure how to review this, but it is necessary for those of us who want to stay compliant and up to date with building regulations. It isn't necessarily easy to read, but like I said, it is what it is. :)

International Building Code 5 by .. Mary M. Mcausland ()
This book provides me with all the information I need to do both residental and commercial building in the United States. Most states use most of the IBC with some amendments, which can be found on the state websites. Allows us to do business with ease.

Code Check is complete guide! 5 by .. D. Byce (San Diego, CA United States)
I was suprised how complete the codcheck series is. If you live/work in California you will need the special California edition

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes 4 by .. Edward Pohlman (Toledo, Ohio)
This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

CODE CHECK COMPLETE 5 by .. E. Day ()
Code Check Complete should be on every job site. A comprehensive book with illustrations on the latest building codes

Code check complete review 4 by .. Dennis Krentz (Lake County, CA)
good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.

Well pleased 5 by .. OnlineBuyer (Norfolk, Va.)
This book is well made, obviously for field use, more importantly the information is very well organized and presentation is easy to understand. I own all the code check series and this just ties in with the rest. Illustrations are excellent and documentation and references are great. A definite positive addition to my library.

This was exactly what I expected. In the professional engineering circles, it is important to maintain the latest specifications on which your analyses must be based.

Everything you need to build a garage (or house)! 5 by .. Forrest Frantz (Parkdale, OR)
If you are acting as a contractor on your home or garage project, then this book is invaluable to make sure that the subs are building to code or making sure that you are building to code. As an retired contractor and engineer, I've come to realize over time that codes actually do have a purpose in life besides making the building process a pain. The old farm house I bought probably wasn't built to code and it shows. A lot of farmers around here have to get up on their out-building and shovel snow because every year one or two more of their buildings collapse.

The book is well organize by project phase so things are easy to find--cement pad, walls, floors, roof, etc.

Can a residential Architect live without this book? 5 by .. M. Morris (Arlington, VA)
This Christmas we gave this book to our son, at his suggestion. He is a residential Architect working in Kansas City. I asked him what he thought about the book, after having time to review it. His response was, "Tell them its irritatingly indispensable."

Amazon is always outstanding in the supply and delivery!

Always purchase the Looseleaf version... 5 by .. D. K. Thorpe (Sheridan, Wyoming)
Boring book...but aren't all books that are written by lawyers? It seems to be organized well and the looseleaf version is easy to make copies to take in the field or show the guys...

I shouldn't have to pay to see the law I'm held to. 1 by .. AstroGeek (Colorado Springs, CO USA)
Not a review of the content, for the most part it is well organized and concise. My issue is with the distribution. Yes I could look at the copies in the regional building dept. office (50 mile roundtrip) or city library (40 mile round trip). But if it's public law, why can't I get access to it via the net, or for a nominal fee to cover printing & distribution expenses?

Pleasant purchase 5 by .. ITSI- Randall Butler (Denver, CO)
The book was in perfect condition, as advertised. I also received it promptly. No negative aspects of the purchase whatsoever! Thanks!

The IBC more than just another building code 2 by .. Mighty Anvil (Boston)
The IBC is the long-time-coming consolidation of the three major building codes in the US and there is nothing "international" about it. Back in the 70's the 3 code organizations formed BOCA and put out a 1 & 2 family dwelling code. The 3 members them gradually made changes to the individual building codes that brought them into similar formats, then they combined them into one code in 2000, the IBC, and modified the dwelling code to be the IRC (Int. Residential Code)and changed the organization's name to the ICC, the Int. Code Council. There little to review about the content since it is either the law in your area or it is not. For comparisons to previous codes and other information try the ICC's website http://www.iccsafe.org/

2006 Building Code Handbook 5 by .. Marilyn Wong ()
This book was purchased for our office and we are using it constantly. We bought it for the lowest price and we are happy with the condition and the timeliness arrival of the purchase.

Makes Sense out of the Building Code 5 by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV)
This handbook is a plain English guide to the Building Codes that are used (more or less) across the United States.

More or Less - means that the individual codes are used by most places, but not all. Some areas have enhanced the codes to strengthen particular areas. When new codes come in, it takes time for them to get approved all across the country, so some places will have the older version, some the newer.

Plain English - means that the codes themselves are written in what's called 'code text.' This is a quasi legal kind of writing that is intended to minimize errors in intrepretation, but which doesn't exactly succeed except that it succeeds in being difficult to read.

This book presents the code in an easy to understand format. It is much easier to read, but lacks the legal precision of the code itself. Use this book for understanding what the code means. Use the code itself if you are going to court, and reference this book if you're having to explain it to a jury.

This is an excellent approach, and the book is very well written and cross referenced to the code itself.

COMMENTS ON UBC SEISMIC LOAD 3 by .. EMAMI-MORTEZA (IRAN)
I FOUND SOME PROBLEM REGARDING UBC SEISMIC LOAD IN BUILDINGS'DESIGN TAKING TO ACOUNT 1994 UBC EDITION AND COMPARING THIS TWO WITH EACH OTHER MAKE CONFUSING THE REASONS ARE : 1- WHY THE SHEAR FACTOR HAS CHANGED THIS MUSH? IF YOU COMPARE UBC 1994 SEISMIC LOAD WITH 1997 IT CAN BE OBSERVED THAT FIGURS R,I ,.. HAVE SAME MEANINGS BUT CONCEPT OF SHEAR FACTOR CALCULATION IS TOTALLY REVAISED I WANT TO KNOW THE JUSTIFICATION FOR SUCH CHANGES 2-THE NEW FACTORS WHICH ARE CONSIDERED IN NEW FORMULA IS ANOTHER QUESTION ,WHY THE RESPECTIVE COMMITTEE RECENTLY HAS REALISED THAT THESE FACTOR ARE IMPOTANT AND VITAL IN CALCULATION OF SHEAR FORCES INDUSES BY EARTHQUACK.I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE PAPERS OR EXPLANATIONS FROM SPECIALISTS ON THIS ISSUE 3-IS THERE ANY SIMILAR COMMENT ON THIS UBC FORMULA 4-IS THERE ANY AMENDMENT ON UBS SEISMIC LOAD(1997) WHICH HAS BEEN OFFICIALY APPROVED 5- IS THER ANY REVISION ON THE ABOVE MENTIONED UBC FORMULA (SEISMIC LOAD UBC 1997) RECENTLY ISSUED

This work is quoted my county planning and permit officers 3 by .. ()
The book was purchased in CD rom form. There is key word searches for specific items. Every builder needing a permit to start constuction should know this book well. Another company that puts out a similar book is called Boca. They supliment and overlap the UBC. Both are handy, but very over priced.
