Gardener's Journal 5 by .. F. D. Driscoll (East Longmeadow, Massachusetts United States)
An excellent book and becoming hard to find in new condition. I have had two of these in the past and wanted a third one for the years 2009-2013. The easiest book for someone who likes to compare data from year to year.

Good Hints and Down-to-Earth Information 5 by .. gojobooks (Louisiana, USA)
I highly recommend this book for anyone with a home-based book business with Amazon or any other on-line store. The ideas are right on and elementary. Yet, if you already have a business, the information and web sites he gives in the book are valuable.

A Good Resource 4 by .. Timothy Haugh (New York, NY United States)
I've sold a few books on eBay, but I've never really tried seriously to make money at it. However, I have the advantage of having long experience in the book trade. Still, I was wondering what might be particular about the online world, so I decided to take a look at this book since Steve Weber is someone who started small and built a successful online business. For the most part, this book is a valuable tool for someone who really wants to make it.

There are a number of things that I really like about this book. He's very smart about where to find books and about what books are smart to acquire. He's particularly acute with suggesting areas that should be avoided and those that are easy to overlook (certain types of textbooks, particular areas of history-- "learn to find unusual books"). In these areas, his suggestions often gibe with my own experience, though I'm more excited about certain areas than he is.

He's also quite good on the mechanics of running an online business, though I focused mainly on his general suggestions about tracking inventory, pricing and customer service. He goes a bit overboard when suggesting websites and software worth looking at to manage some of these tasks. A few simple, straightforward suggestions might serve the beginner better.

And, of course, this book suffers from the fate of all books that deal with online services. Published in 2006, some of the specific suggestions, particularly concerning the smaller companies, are already out-of-date. If you stick with the larger companies, however, you probably won't have too much trouble.

In the end, this book provides valuable insight into running a bookstore. It doesn't matter whether you are someone who already owns a store and wants to get your inventory online or someone starting from scratch, there is valuable advice here.

Much more than you paid for! 5 by .. Victorya Rogers (Dallas, TX United States)
I read Home-Based Bookstore because I have hundreds of perfect condition used books I just cleared out from my personal library at home and wanted to see if I could sell them on Amazon and didn't know how to get started. Just like Steve Weber's other books, you get much more than you pay for. Weber fills this book with details covering every aspect of setting up your home based used bookstore for NO MONEY upfront. How cool is that? Where as other books on the topic have been reviewed saying they just recycle what you can find on Amazon help pages, Weber includes tons of insider information far beyond what is found on Amazon's help links, such as what and where to find books to sell, how to price them correctly, how to package and ship, get feedback from customer, handling negative feedback, handling taxes, etc. etc. etc. No question you can think up appears to be lacking an answer on these pages...and here's another exciting upside...within 2 days of reading this book and setting up my store, I've already sold and shipped THREE of my books. Thanks Steve...and keep sharing your insider information.

Great book!!! 5 by .. Chad L. Mclendon (Swainsboro, GA USA)
If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to assist you with opening up your own bookstore, then this is the book for you! Being a first time business owner, I had no idea of where to begin. I struggle for over two months just trying to do the research to get started. Then I came upon this book and within hours of reading it, I had a clear road map to start my own business. Now I'm not saying it made things easier. There is still a lot of hard work that goes into opening your own business. But it does make the initial starting point clearer.

Worth every penny! 5 by .. Terri Smalls (NY United States)
It has been my dream to open up a bookstore for years. So, I decided to research it. I purchased this book and my copy is marked up completely. It contains my notes, sticky papers and more. It gave me valuable research that I feel would have taken me at least a year to obtain on my own. In addition, alot of her research is research you cannot get on-line. The reason is because it includes interviews she conducted with bookstore owners asking about their experiences of being a store owner, resources, ideas and more. It is crystal clear to me that a great deal of time and research went into putting this book together. As an author myself, I personally know how time consuming research can be in writing a book. So, Trust me, this book will be worth every penny!

Excellent Resource 5 by .. Beth Johnson (Irvine, CA)
I have been thinking about opening a bookstore for years and I really enjoyed this book. The information was very important to me in my process of getting started. The book covers not only the basics (which I definitely needed) but gave me a lot of industry information that I was having trouble finding. I liked the quotes from booksellers. It looks like the author really did a lot of research to put this together. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about opening a bookstore!

Great resource. 5 by .. Victoria (Arlington)
The author has done a wonderful job writing the FabJob Guide to Become a Bookstore Owner! The book is full of usefull tips and in-depth information. It is so straightforward and helpful, it is easy to read, and it provides such fantastic information.

Also the forms that were included on the CD-ROM were immensely practical and usefull and those alone are worth the cost of this book.

Somewhat useful, but too generic 3 by .. Judith (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
This reads like an adaptation of boilerplate content for a generic start-your-own business or imageine-your-future guide. It's part of a series on various dream-business topics, so that's probably exactly what it is. There are useful resources mentioned, but it's not specific and detailed enough, and you'll need to find the free listservs for bookstore owners and lurk there to learn the nitty gritty. What's the minimum square footage for a successful used bookstore, for instance? Instead, it includes too much commonsense info such as a "tip" telling you that you can find the copyright date of a book on the back of one of the title page. Geez! Anybody interested in books would know that. And makeup as a suggested sideline product in a bookstore?! Still, if you're just starting to do serious research into this business, it's the least expensive and most readily available book available as of this writing 9/2005. The best ones are either out of print, so hard to find and pricey, and the ones from the bookseller trade associations would be better to buy only after you know the realities of how costly it is and profitable it isn't to start any kind of bookstore. They're expensive. Go to one of the annual Book Expos and start your research there when you're really serious. (This book doesn't mention that invaluable resource, other than vague recommendations to attend trade shows.) My guess is that the author knows her stuff but was hamstrung by the publisher's constrained format requirements.

Great book for anyone considering the business 5 by .. reader USA ()
Michael Mould has done an excellent job providing the nitty gritty details of what is involved in being an online bookseller. He has included some very helpful spreadsheets on a CD as well. In addition, he has started a website that is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about the business. I highly recommend the book!

Online Bookselling - A Great Resource 5 by .. Author of Top Self Publishing Firms (Seattle, WA)
This well written and organized book walks you through the step by step process of setting up a home based book business. The author thoroughly covers all of the important categories:
1. Which books to buy or avoid
2. How to set book pricing
3. Creating a system for shipping and fulfillment
4. How to get listed on Amazon.com
5. How to set up the legal end of a home business

With the current state of the economy, this book will bring value to those looking for a full-time operation as well as those looking to earn a supplemental income. Very detailed and comprehensive, Online Bookselling covers all the bases.

Stacie Vander Pol, author of "Top Self Publishing Firms"

This isa very good book to own if you want to know more about selling on line 5 by .. Monkey (Seattle)
This is an overall good book to own filled with practical advice about how to run an on line book store. Very indepth, sometimes too much so, like the bit about how to package a book for shipping, but you also do not get that level of detail in anyone elses book either. This is one of the quartet of books you should get when you decide you want to open up your own on line book store.

There are a lot of things sellers need to know and lots of support for this need for knowledge in the book from customer service, what to pay for books, how to grade and price books, as well as tons of other great information that you will need.

Overall 5 of 5 books, enjoyed reading this and learning how to apply the well thought out advice presented in this book.

Probably one of the best tools for our new business 5 by .. Todd Macon (Durango, CO)
Michael Mould deserves serious kudos from the world of used booksellers. This book is extremely thorough and gives fantastic nuts and bolts advice. Mike is both rational and encouraging--he avoids the hype of "start-ups" which allows his book to be genuine and open-minded. His "day in the life" anticipates the "basic" questions and his lists of services and weblinks are very helpful. I also highly recommend buying copies that come with the CD "Bookkeeping for Booksellers". That Mike shares all the work he has done is generosity on a karmic scale. Not only is the book helpful, but Mike has created and inspired a large and collaborative community of booksellers through his work. Thanks, Mike, for pointing the way.

"The devil is in the details." 5 by .. B. Baker (Lancaster, PA)
Michael Mould covers every detail for those who are interested in online bookselling (as a hobby or a business). I keep this book on my desk and refer to it frequently. Personally, I found the photographs on packaging and shipping to be very interesting (and vital, considering some of his own USPS experiences and insights). He even provides an informative "A Day in the Business" section detailing his own daily bookselling procedures. Very helpful. I have yet to see another bookselling guide to offer such detailed information or step-by-step illustration.

More Than a Mouse Tale 5 by .. Lit Chic (The Lone Star State)
When I picked up this book to do as a novel study for my sixth-graders, I will admit I was a little skeptical. My middle schoolers aren't exactly well-versed in any literature at all, much less well-read enough to enjoy a tale about reading. They also glanced at the title and expressed some bemusement at why I would pick a book about a *bookstore* of all places. However, I was determined. I am on a campaign at my school to prove that novel studies will beat the daylights out of any "reading" curriculum. (Thanks to The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition (Read-Aloud Handbook), I'm getting on all of my superiors' nerves. However, my students' improvement is validating the research....)

At any rate, they were willing to listen to a story if it meant they didn't have to do work, even if it wasn't a story that didn't immediately appeal to them. By the end of the first few chapters, though, we were all hooked. The story is endearing--it's about a mouse that survives on words. The words become a metaphor for their meanings, and before long this mouse, Cervantes, is caught up in a book about a scribe who has to save a village from a dragon. This dragon is appropriately named Censor, and as the story progresses, the layers get deeper.

The more I contemplate this book, the more impressed I am. Christian does it all: her plot is inventive, and Sigfried the Scribe and Cervantes the Mouse are easy to like. What amazed me, however, was to see the jump in my students' comprehension level and reading comfort level after reading this book. Christian uses Cervantes to illustrate the process of reading. For many of us, it's ingrained. However, for a whole generation of media-dependent Americans, reading is painful and not automatic. No one has demonstrated to a lot of children how to read! Somehow, Christian made illustrating the reading process part of the overall story. It's not forced. It makes sense. And this is far better than any context clues lesson I've ever done. The author demonstrates how to read, as well as the importance of reading, through a very entertaining, easy-to-encounter plot line. By the time we finished the book, the kids were wild about it. And just as importantly, many of my reluctant readers are now confident readers. I've seen a huge difference in their independent reading. Quite frankly, I'm rather amazed by how much this book has helped our reading process.

I don't want to emphasize the educational aspect to the detriment of the story itself though. I adore the way Sigfried slays the dragon. It is inventive, surprising, meaningful, and makes total sense. I'll be keeping this gem on my bookshelf and recommending it to everybody--parents, teachers and librarians. It's a shame this isn't on the kids' classics lists, but I'm sure time will rectify that. Word just needs to get out about how good this quick read really is.

Highly recommended.

Cute as a Rat 5 by .. ()
I would recommend this book for anyone who has a pet mouse, rat, hamster, guinea pig,or other small furry pet. Also, it makes a good read for adventure lovers. The Bookstore Mouse is an adventure story featuring Sigifried the scribe, Milo the cat,and of course, the adorable bookstore mouse. In the story, the bookstore mouse magically jumps into a book and helps a scribe named Sigifried defeat a dragon who has kidnapped some troubadours. You'll be entertained when the dragon uses exquisite words to try to scare away Sigifried. I especially enjoyed the adorable illustrations of The Bookstore Mouse and the action including the duel between Sigifried and the dragon! (Reviewed by Michael, age 9)

Fun romp for elementary school readers 4 by .. Deanna Weber Prine (Pennsylvania)
A mouse and a hero with a quest, what can be more entertaining or relatable for a young reader? For those young readers who have already begun their love affair with books this will be especially appealing. You can almost smell the leather books in the bookstore that the mouse lives in. The Amazon editorial introduction is correct: you will be reminded of the Phantom Tollbooth with all the yummy and delectable words the mouse and the reader will munch on!

The story is short enough to keep their attention while it's compelling enough to keep them reading. For those who enjoy reading to their little ones, the chapters are a good length to read one (or maybe two if they're good) a day/night.

Depending on the reading skill level of the child, I'd recommend this for readers in Grades 2-5.

Fun and inventive. 4 by .. pshaw@sedona.net ()
I thought it was inventive because the mouse lives on books. He eats words out of books and he protects himself from the sleeping but dangerous cat by using sharp words but in the end he can't protect himself because the cat can't read. It's fun because of the adveture the mouse has with the young scribe. The ending was fun too.

An amusing short book 5 by .. ()
When I first picked up The Bookstore Mouse I was thinking "gee, another new library book, maybe this will provide about an hour of reading," but when I opened the book at home I got more than I had bargained for. I became entoiled in the affairs of a mouse and a wanna be knight. The way the book was written was original, the mouse knowing that he was reading and the knight and the way they use this advantage of information to help themselves throughout the adventure he was having. I really enjoyed this book. By A.M2

The Boxcar Children- Mai Yia's Review 5 by .. ()
I think the BOXCAR CHILDREN is extremely fun to read. It tells about adventurous kids who are running away from their grandfather. While running away they had many adventures. The four kid's names are: Henry, a boy who is strong and is the oldest, Jessie, a girl who is adventurous and knows how to cook excellent food, Violet a 10 year old girl who is smart, and Benny, the youngest, well mannered, and funny boy. Henry worked for a man named Dr. Moore because he wanted to make money to buy food to eat. He also worked for Dr. Moore so that he could support his siblings. These kids are very creative. I really like this book. I think everyone should read this book because you could learn something. It is a good bedtime story too because, you could have wonderful dreams instead of scary nightmares. I give this book 5 stars.

Made my students laugh! 4 by .. Emily J. Taylor (Utah)
Any book that can get a guided reading group of first graders rolling on the floor with laughter is a plus with me. Even I the teacher was caught up in this charming little mystery that turns on its heads stereotyped relationships between cats and mice. The characters are silly, but that is the charm and my kids loved it, so good enough!

How to Start and Run a Used Bookstore 5 by .. Jessie R. Smith Jr. (Central Louisiana)
I find this book to be Fabulous, well written and organized. Ms. Chandler actually was in "the trenches" before she wrote this book and can speak with authority if not expertise. Many of her ideas, or better yet, practices are presented to the reader who is considering the business of selling used books in a 'bricknmortar' setting rather than on the net, are in use by many sellers. I have been researching operating a book store for the last 10 years and have found this to be true in U.B. stores all over the country. My wife really likes her advise on the cats. Please keep this book in print!

Book Store Cat 5 by .. A. D. Cox (northern PA, USA)
A great colorful children's book with a fun story. Great for any animal loving child.

Author of "Hobo Finds A Home"

The author must know cats really well! 5 by .. J. Arena (Williamsburg, VA)
Parents and children alike will love reading over and over again this charming story about Mulligan, a cat in a bookstore who seems to be running the show, and takes his position very seriously!

While a puppet show for young customers catches Mulligan's eye, he is alarmed to discover the presence of a big green bird on the stage. Naturally, Mulligan springs into action, causing the expected bruhaha!

Well, in the end young readers will be amused to see how Mulligan is so satisfied that he had done a good job.

The illustrations are wonderful, making the bookstore look like a very inviting place, indeed! By all means, invite this kitty into your own home.

A fun storybook. 5 by .. MLPlayfair (Ravenna, OH)
BOOKSTORE CAT is a nice little story with colorful, fun pictures full of interest. And a surprisingly good plot for a learn-to-read book! The author has obviously had a personal relationship with a cat, as she's captured Mulligan's personality and "priorities" very well. What intrigues me is the whole concept of "Step into Reading" books. This is a Step 1 book for the earliest readers. (There are four steps.) If you're new to them, as I am, let me tell you there are a LOT of titles in the series (listed at the back of the book). Some are Sesame Street books, Thomas the Tank Engine, Arthur, and more. If you have a preschooler, you might want to look into these.

One More Time, Mommy....PLEASE! 5 by .. Samantha Allen (Los Angeles, California)
This is a GREAT book for kids - my 18 month old daughter LOVES this book and I am lucky if I can get through pre-nap time or pre-bed time reading without having to read this book aloud more than three times.

The book is written so that there is the right amount of text and pictures on each page to hold a small attention span captive long enough to read the entire book. My daughter enjoys and understands the plot, the protagonist/antagonist characters, and happily points out the mommys, babies and animals; she especially likes shaking her little finger and saying "No no no" and "uh oh" to the character in the story who tries to enter the bookstore.

This book is also good to use as a tool for exposing a child to a second language; I can easily point to things and ask my daughter to show me the gato, the libro, the ventana, etc.

If you are looking for a book that is the next step after board books for younger children OR a first step with a beginning reader....this is it!

Happy reading and remember.....every book store needs a Bookstore Cat!

Here and there some good advice, much of it pretty obvious stuff about doing retail business in general--but for the most part, obsolete and often misleading when it comes to specifics about the trade. The book is almost twenty years old, and the internet has made much of it irrelevant--he starts off by describing used book stores as "a tremendous growth industry". If you want to know how to build shelves, greet customers, and set up your store, he has some useful things to say, but his advice on what to stock (Harlequin romances?????) is absurd, and his pricing formulas make little sense. I'm thinking about buying a bookstore, and this book was very little help to me.

AMAZING!! 5 by .. Chevelle ()
This book is absolutely amazing! It has everything you need if you really love books and take the idea of a used bookstore seriously!

It is one of the best books I have ever read and you will be inspired beyond all you can imagine!!!

Terrific hands on advice from an experienced book seller! 5 by .. Travis C. Ward (Silverton, OR United States)
How much did I enjoy this book?

Enough to scan it into my computer for reading on my laptop while working overseas.

Even though the information is dated, the principles are as good now as ever. I wish every used book dealer would take his advice and not write prices inside the jackets or otherwise deface the books to prevent theft.

Further, his advice regarding signage is worth the price of the book. I once owned a business where I chose to erect a pleasing sign that wouldn't be deemed obnoxious. I suffered! His point is that if you want to be a nice guy don't bother getting into the business. If, however, you want to succeed, do what you must to build your business.

There is but one moral in business. Learn it before you start or learn it after you start, but you must learn it. Business first, image second.

Clear and cogent, though dated 4 by .. Jacob Proffitt (Salt Lake City, UT United States)
This book contains detailed and extremely valuable advice about starting (and running) a used (he calls it Antiquarian) bookstore. If you own, or want to own, a used bookstore this is a must-read. Even if your experience doesn't match the author's experience, you can't help but find very useful, usable advice here. The author does tend to make it sound a lot easier and straight forward than it probably is (I am not a used bookstore owner--I only dare to dream) and I think he doesn't take into account his own extensive sales experience obtained prior to opening his bookstores. The biggest problem, though, is that it was origanally written in the mid 80s and the latest update was 1989. That means that the effect of the internet in evening out distribution inequities is not taken into account--an event of likely significant impact on used book sales. I heartily recommend the book, but it's age drops it from a solid five to my four star rating.

Good basic guide to selling used books for a living 4 by .. ()
Although this book was written pre-internet, it still offers an excellent general review on how to sell used books for a living. The author makes it sound like it is easy to make millions of dollars selling used books, but the truth is, with this book, anyone can sell used books and make a comfortable and very fun living at it. But the chance of making millions is very slim.
