Great book! 5 by .. Joshua J. Manygoats (Phoenix, AZ)
We're in Arizona, so the spanish speaking population is immense, so I want my daughter to learn Spanish. I bought this and "Queiro a Mi Mama Porque," and these are the only books my daughter wants to read before bed. They are absolutely adorable!

Small; story disappointing 2 by .. Globetrotting Mom ()
This book was much smaller than I expected (I bought the hardcover edition). It's about the size of my hand. The story disappointed me too. It starts out fine, but you're left hanging at the end. I don't think I'd have bought it if I had read it in the store.

SYNOPSIS
Monica sees the full moon, asks Papa to get it. Papa gets long ladder, goes to moon. Moon is too big; moon tells Papa to wait. Papa waits until moon is smaller, brings it to Monica. Monica plays with the moon. "But the moon kept getting smaller and smaller and smaller and finally it disappeared altogether. Then one night, Monica saw a thin sliver of the moon reappear. Each night the moon grew... and grew and grew..." That's how it ends -- with a two page illustration of the full moon.

Good book - but with a few small caveats 4 by .. Ulyyf (NYC)
This is a short story about a girl who wants to play with the moon, sending her dad to get it. We go through a half a month until the moon is small enough to take home, and then it disappears - but it comes back in the sky in the next half a month.

Several of the pages have fold-outs of some sort, most noticeably the big spread where the full moon talks to Monica's father. These fold-outs are a little delicate, possibly too delicate for the small hands who expect to use board books. You might want to wait until your child is older and then simply get the bigger, non-board edition.

Unlike some commenters here, I have an actual board book, with the same ISBN as listed. I don't know what happened with their books.

Love this book! 5 by .. SCS ()
I originally picked up this book because my daughter, 2, calls her dad "papa" rather than "daddy" and I thought it would be fun even though it seemed a little ahead of her. Let me tell you, she can't get enough of this book! She LOVES it and she gets the story. She's just 2 as in 24 months old, and she sees the moon outside now and asks her papa for it. I love it and highly recommend this book to anyone!

Teeny tiny book, cute message 3 by .. winnie (PA United States)
This book is really small!
Cute, but if you are getting it for a toddler they may need some supervision to make sure the pages don't get torn.
Also a bit expensive for what you are getting..

Another excellent book by Eric Carle 5 by .. Shirley Baek-Dewar (Seattle, WA United States)
This book is among my daughter's favorites. She is nearly two years old and has already dog-eared and torn some pages, she literally has enjoyed the book to pieces. This has turned out to be a perfect book for her because she absolutely loves the moon. Seattle winter's don't offer many opportunities for even glimpses of the moon. It's also about a girl and her papa which is something nice for my husband to share with her. Don't expect this book to physically withstand the curious hands of infants. It's not tough like a board book!

Beautiful pictures to match the poems 5 by .. Buyer1 ()
My toddler loves this book. This is the first book he actually refers to by name. Each little poem on each page is beautiful in its own way. The mushy (cuddle, hug) is balanced by the practical (make me clean). I disagree with the reviewer who thought the Papa Papa side was not as good.

What I especially love is the image and words that refer to breastfeeding. The lovely words (Give me warmth and give me milk) are accompanied by a beautiful illustration of a cheetah nursing. Most baby books refer to bottles, as in Katz' "What Does Baby Say?" (What does the hungry baby say? Ba-Ba.) My breastfed son could never relate to these, but he instantly responded to this page in this book. Love it!

mama side is good, papa side not so interesting 3 by .. M. Walden ()
We really like the Mama side of the book, it's very sweet, but the Papa side doesn't feel as touching and we don't relate to it much. Glad we checked it out from the library before buying it.

Two Great Books in one 5 by .. A. Hydock (NY)
This flip book is two books in one. I fell in love with this cute story of a mother and a father's love. We give this to every pregnant person we know. It's a GREAT GIFT and our son still loves to look and read it at two years old. I even bought a back up copy since ours was "well loved".

Beautiful book - wish there were more like it out there! 5 by .. Aislinn Jones (Atlanta, GA)
My husband and I joke (and despair) about how hard it is to find a good book about the relationship between parent and child to read to our 15 month old son. Too many books concentrate on only one parental relationship - usually mother and child - or present very gender-biased views of the parent's role (eg, "Mommy makes the cookies while Daddy plays sports").

This is not the case with this beautiful book. We bought it on a whim at the San Diego Zoo and now it is one of our - and our son's - favorite books. My husband and I are pleased to read messages about nurturing papa animals and wise mama animals. I'm also happy that there is a picture of a nursing cub since we're still nursing. My son likes looking at the realistically painted pictures of the parent and baby animals. The board book is sturdy enough to withstand his rough love and gnawing. He also likes that he gets two bedtime stories in one book when we flip the book over to read the other side!

I like this book so much that I plan to make it a staple baby shower gift for the new babies in my life. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Pictures, Beautiful Words 5 by .. Johbeak ()
The illustrations in this book are positively stunning, in contrast to many other children's board books. I can't help but notice how beautifully and expertly they were painted. With each turn of the page, the color palette moodily changes, from vibrant golds to muted blues, all the while being treated to beautiful and elegant words. An absolute joy to look at and read, I highly recommend this book for any child's library.

This is already one of one-year-old son's favorite books (and mine too!), and will probably be a cherished item to keep in his memory box.

Traditional family at it's best! 5 by .. A. Hendricks (Arkansas)
I am a long time fan of Lois Lenski and this is another book added to my favorites list. It has what so many modern children's books are missing - a traditional nuclear family. Mama and Papa Small and their three children do things that all families should aspire to do. They eat together, play together, shop together, garden together and go to church together. They allow each other time to rest, help their family members with chores and while Papa Small goes to work outside the home and Mama Small is a typical SAHM, Papa pitches in with the household chores and is involved in the children's lives. This book is quite simply - a joy!

Yes, this is a GREAT book! 5 by .. Susan Trexel (Near the great state of Idaho)
I first "met" Papa Small 20 years ago when I was babysitting my neighbor's 2 boys. She had a copy that was her own copy when she was a child. It was the black and white version, and she said it was one of her favorite books. It charmed me so much in its simplicity and gentleness, that I got a copy at the libary to read to my little girl; also brought home Cowboy Small, Policeman Small, etc. and since that day, my children have loved Mr. Small in his many varied roles. Lois Lenski's books are treasures for adults and children alike. Years ago before the internet, we tried and tried to find our own copy of Papa Small but we had no luck. We finally made a photocopy of a library copy (which was a French/English version from Canada by the way- in French he is Papa Petit) and colored it, laminated it, bound it with little rings, and we finally had our own copy! Now, we also own this reissue. Yes, they are all colorized now. Some people don't like that. I don't mind it, and in some ways I actually like them better. If you are a serious Lenski collector, you are better off finding originals on ebay. For the rest of us, these affordable reissues are a dream come true. I have yet to meet a child who doesn't like a Mr. Small book. Lois Lenski's books are such a refreshment...I am glad that we can still find such traditional books for children in this crazy, fast-paced, morally de-sensitized, ever-changing world. I am a Christian and live a traditional life, so the family life depicted in this book was not an offense to me.

Worthy of Your Lenski Collection& A GREAT Children's Book 5 by .. ()
This is a fabulous kid's book--I have two copies of it including an original non-colorized one that was mine as a child that I now read to my boys. I am a working, college educated professional and this book is far from archaic. It's hard to find books these days that depict a two-parent family, that goes the church on Sunday, and the dad does yard work with a reel mower (my husband does and we live in a suburb of the O.C. where people pay gardners to cut their postage stamp lots). We love this book (even though we are a multi-racial family) since the family does all the things that we do including go to church every Sunday. Perhaps you are a stay-at-home mom (I'm not), you'd enjoy this one with the Small smalls helping Daddy and Mama too. "Mama Small takes care of the house....Mama Small cooks the meals. Paul and Polly Small help. They set the table. Baby Small is hungry...When Papa Small comes home, the small Smalls run to meet him. Dinner is ready. The Smalls sit down to eat... " But lest you think Papa Small is doing nothing..."On Monday Mama Small washes the clothes. When Papa Small comes home he helps hang them on the line...Papa Small likes to help around the house. On Wednesday he hangs up a picture up for Mama." Etc. Great book. Read it all the time. You should get it. Pitty they've colorized all of Lois Lenski's fabulous two-color books. In the 21st century, yes, we now have working single parents, same-sex two parent households, all colors and stripes, but that doesn't make it wrong to depict the "traditional," nuclear family. Yes according to the recent census that's only now 22% of the US population, but this book is still a keeper. Thumbs up, way up!

Old Fashioned Family almost a museum piece 3 by .. D. Levy (New York, NY USA)
More than any other in Lois Lenski's Small series, "Papa Small" will strike almost any modern family as utterly archaic. Papa gets up in the morning and goes off to work while Mama stays home and cleans and cooks. The whole family drives into town to do Saturday grocery shopping. On Sunday, they go to church.

You may find this book charming and it might be a good jumping-off point for a discussion with your child about how your own family differs from the Smalls. But unless you are a Lenski completist, I'd stick to Cowboy Small, the Little Farm, the Little Fire Engine, or the Little Train...those are the best.

My son loves this book! 5 by .. alison (Brentwood, CA)
My son has loved this book since he was about 6 months old. His first copy got ruined and I had to get him another because he loves it so much. It is a sweet story and he loves tickling papas toes, poking papas nose and pulling on papas ear! This is the book that HE grabs if I ask "Do you want to read a story?" Plus at the end he gets a big kiss too, he loves it. Absolutely his favorite...

This is a super sweet book...my son loves it! It's fun to get "Mama Mama" too!

Great Dad or Grandpa Book 5 by .. coeletti (michigan, usa)
I bought this together with Mama Mama and I found it to be a great book for daddy to read to our son and as he got older to learn about animals in nature where the daddies help care for the babies--just like with humans (wink (o;) He especially loved the wolf--howling at the moon together with daddy. It also worked out that my father in law was "Papa" not grandpa so this could very well be a nice gift for a new daddy or grandpa. Very tender and excellent illustrations of the animals in good board book format for those rough toddler years.

My 1 year old loves it! 5 by .. C. J. Harris (Carlsbad, CA United States)
This book delights my 1 year old son. You can read this book in about 3 minutes. We just keep reading it over and over again-he loves the repitition. Each time we read it, I add something to it--like counting how many animals are on the page, or making that animal's sounds, etc. There is one page that has a Papa monkey and the baby, and for some reason every time we get to it, the picture makes my son laugh. I know the words by heart now, and if at any point I just say, "Papa Papa", he will stop whatever he is doing and look at me. It makes him happy, and that makes me happy. So I recommend this book. I just ordered "Mama Mama" hoping it will be as good as this one.

Not Quite as Good as Mama, Mama! 4 by .. ()
But a great addition to it, nonetheless. The pictures were awesome, but the rhymes were pretty forced. My kids always pick the pair (Mama, Mama and Papa, Papa)together!

Beautiful! 5 by .. Uruviel Ancalímon (Kirkland, WA)
This book is just so cute. It's an affirmation that a child and his or her papa can make over and over again attesting to the warmth, love and protection that only a father can give to his child. Goes very well with it's partner book, Mama, Mama. The refs to Attachment Parenting are obvious and I highly recommend this book to anyone who parents by instinct.

thumbs up from an 8 year old baseball fan 4 by .. Motherly Way Enterprises, Inc. (Portland, OR)
My 8 year old son thought this book was great. "It just pulls you in the first few pages, and keeps going from there". I don't think he knew much about Babe Didrikson before this book, but he has a great appreciation of her after reading it.

At 47 pages, it's a quick, easy read with bright, colorful illustrations. We'll have to read the previous books now...

A GREAT WOMAN REMEMBERED 5 by .. Donna Coomer (Hartshorn, MO, USA)
Papa Lemon's Little Wanderers have once again stumbled into the chance to turn a school assignment into a life lesson. After competing in their fifth grade championship baseball game they reminisce with Papa Lemon and Mama Sarah about the great Babe Didrikson. Well at least Nikki does. The rest of the crew are not quite sure who this Babe is. So with the help of Papa Lemon and Mama Sarah's encouragement they hop on the train and head back in time. Twice!

With this installment of the Papa Lemon series, author Lehman Riley gives the wanderers the chance to interact with one of sport's all time greats. And with Mama Sarah offering some background information we all can learn about someone who really was a multi-talented athlete. Babe did it all. Baseball, basketball, golf and tennis. Track, bowling and even boxing. She was a hero among her childhood friends and in our country, when she won numerous medals at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932.

Joshua Wallace's colorful illustrations drop us right into the action and have us as nervous as the wanderers when it comes time to meet Babe. But all ends well as the kids return bubbling with excitement and eager to write their reports so their classmates can also learn about the great Babe Didrikson.

A Fun Story For All! 4 by .. Paul L. Dixon (Minneapolis, MN)
Not many people know about the athlete Babe Didrikson. I believe it is important to expose youth to a variety of historical figures. After reading this book one will have an appreciation of how great an athlete Babe Didrikson was!

Great explanations and practical 5 by .. Kansas Friend (kansas)
This is a very unique book that explains the answers to questions children may have about death and dying.

It is a story of a grandpa talking to children about death and dying. It talks about the different feelings they may have. That the loved one's heart and breathing has stopped. What a funeral home is and the role of the funeral director. What a casket is and a memorial service. What a hearse is and that it carries the body to a cemetery. What set up you might see at the cemetery and what happens there. It also goes on to explain what a crematorium, the process there and what an urn is for those that choose that option. The book finishes by saying goodbye and what beliefs some people have about dying.

This is a great book to explain to children. It helps children understand what is going to happen and what is going on. I have a few children that range is age from 1 to 15. I think it is appropriate for any age. Children should know what goes on at a funeral.

I just can't say enough about this book.

Our children tour fire stations ect... They should really be touring a funeral home, lots of anxiety could be relieved if they knew more about a difficult topic. This is something they will definitely encounter in their lives.
