Located in the heart of TornadoAlley, Promise has just been hit by a major twister, leaving behind 40 million dollars worth of damage- and one grisly murder scene. Autopsies quickly confirm his worst suspicions, and reveal that the killer has left behind a particularly twisted calling card. Charlie seeks help from Dr.Willa Bellman, an expert on killer storms. Together, they must track the path of a cunning killer who knows how to outwit science and technology-before the next storm hits.

Excitement and Suspense! 5 by .. Tenaya Jacob (Nelsonville, OH)
Alice Blanchard has captured her readers with an exciting novel about a murderer who kills when and where his victims least expect it... during tornadoes. Police Chief Charlie Grover consults Dr. Willa Bellman, a tornado-scientist in hopes of catching a killer. How does the killer manage not to be swept up in one of natures most fascinating and devastating disasters? Find out in "The Breathtaker."

No Surprises, Unfortunately 2 by .. E. Hamilton (Chicago IL United States)
The writer is decent, and not a bad book if you're completely out of other things to read. It's a formula. I knew the murderer right away, thus the rest of the book was just trying to get a hint as to why the person was staging these elaborate murders. The author takes (drags) you through chapter after chapter, only to give you a reason that is so tired and predictable that it made me what to toss the book in the trash when it finally reached the end.

Too many pages 2 by .. Jorge Frid (Mexico City)
When you read a book that could be written in half pages its original size it's a waste of time reading it. The main plot -if you can find it - is fairly good. At the book's end you'll find many loose ends in the family plot as well as the main plot. If you don't have anything else to read as some times happen read this one otherwise I don't recommend it.

Tornadous , Keep You Up Nightmare , Page Turner 5 by .. L. Mclott (Milledgeville, Ga United States)
Someone is murdering people during tornados , And is doing it in a freaky way .
Charlie Grover is the small town sheriff with a lot on his mind and alot to handle as he also has a unruly teenage daughter that....

Theres the storm chasers , the scientists , and a small town sheriff whom was in a horrible fire as a child and was scared for life now he has to deal the the Tornado killer/ killers , and try to save his daughter , and he also has a struggling relationship with his father .

This book has it all ... The weather (tornados) , and the storm chasers , A sheriff with the unruly daughter and the father that he dont care for ,light Romance And of course all the mystery one can handle . It will keep you up late turning the pages , Truly a great ending !

Can't wait to read more by this author . 5 stars all the way !

Views from a life long Oklahoma resident 1 by .. R. Foster (Chandler, OK United States)
As a life long resident of the state of Oklahoma, I have to state I really did not like this book. As other reviewers have mentioned the geography errors alone were enough to make me crazy. I found myself talking out loud to the author as I read the book regarding her complete ignorance of Oklahoma geography. We know how beautiful our state is here in Oklahoma and we are proud of the various biomes represented in our geography. My question is if the author was going to use a fictional town, why throw in any references to real places? She could have avoided the massive number of errors by just keeping it all fictional. If you want to use a real place, use it, if not, keep it fictional. There were also numerous errors in meteorology others have mentioned. For example, she stated a "tornado warning" had been issued for an entire region of the state. Those of us who live in tornado alley know "warnings" are only listed for specific counties and places and really mean there has been a tornado sighted and you should take cover immediately, they are not listed for entire regions of a state. That would be a "tornado watch". That is only one example, there are many. Don't waste your money on this book, there are many that are much better.

Author : Jeffrey Archer

Publisher : Macmillan Audio
List Price : $25.95

Product Description

The bestselling author of Kane and Abel returns with a powerful tale of a pair of twins separated by fate and reunited by destiny.

In Hartford, Connecticut, in the late 1940s, a set of twins is separated at birth by accident. One brother grows up to be a war hero in Vietnam and a successful 1990s bank executive, while the other distinguishes himself as a lawyer and politician. Sons of Fortune is as much the story of the making of these two men—and how they eventually find each other—as it is the chronicle of a nation in transition.

Customer reviews

Far fetched idea, but still a good story 4 by .. J Davis (Hendersonville, NC USA)
It's interesting reading the other reviews of this book. For most of Archer's books, readers are in general agreement in their reviews. Not this one! I for one, liked it very much. I agree that the whole premise that the story is based on, the way the twins are separated at birth, is a little far-fetched, but Archer built a great story on that!

Zero Vietnam Research 2 by .. M. Berent (Scottsdale, AZ)
His total lack of knowledge regarding Vietnam military operations, equipment, and terminology show that Archer didn't bother with basic research. Lazy, lazy.

What century is this? What country is this? 1 by .. Little Sailor (Melbourne, Florida)
There are lots of other reviews that summarize the plot. I just want to record my reaction to the book. IT'S TERRIBLE! The text sounds like it was written by a Martian who read some bad early 20th century American literature. Maybe Brits should't try to fake American. The plot is ludicrous. The handling of small matters is very sloppy. I wasted my time on 189 (of 503) pages and came away with nothing other than the desire to warn others to keep away.

Enjoyable page-turner 4 by .. B. C. Flick (Baghdad, Iraq)
4 out of 5. I confess I looked at some of the earlier comments and am impressed by the amount of time some spent to describe their disappointment with a fiction novel. I believe Archer's finest work is As the Crow Flies and this does not rank anywhere near that work. However, the book is enjoyable and a quick read. It wears a bit thin only because the storyline is predictable and the approach that Archer takes in creating the story is straightforward and overused: two opposites, internal and external forces, seemingly random links drawing two opposites together, etc. He is a clever enough writer that for diehard fans he will not measure up. They will be disenchanted that he did not spend a bit more time on writing a unique, compelling, and emotive story.

Archer takes a stand as a guy who will skin his audience that has stuck with him over the years as a way to make a few quid. 1 by .. C. Elgin (Palo Alto CA)
Jeffery Archers book "Sons of Fortune" is about as bad as it can get. I have read a few of this authors novels and though I think none of what I have come across is a masterpiece, they still manage to be page turners and have a little merrit at least. But here, Archer seems to have slapped together a mess and pawned it off on an audience that he has long catered to in an effort seemingly to make a quick buck. Any self respecting author would have considered this as a rough draft and gone in for several more over hauls before publishing it.

What really gets me is that on the inside flap of the hardback edition, this book is said to be about two brothers who are separated at birth and unknowingly run against each other for a political office. So with that in mind, the reader opens up the book and the first few pages read as though they are setting up the stage for events to follow. You know what I mean, If you have read a lot , you will have come across preludes that sketch in a bit of pre-history and then the story starts. Only it goes on for more than a few pages. Pretty soon you realize that you have read over a hundred pages and the story is still catching up to the inside flap of the book. The writing all of the way through is quick, as though Archer is merely filling in a few details. Myself, I started from here to figure out where the story would start and then quickly skimmed through page after page after page. Sorry for the plot spoiler here, but the brothers run against each other for a senate seat and realize they are twins separated at birth only on the very last couple of pages. That is what the book is about. 500 pages of poorly written pre-amble.

This is a horrible horrible book.
Save your time and energy and read something else.

Kidnapping is Risky 5 by .. Nash Black (Jamestown, KY)
Andrew Douglas recovers kidnapped victims and desperately tries to educate his clients as to how they can protect themselves. His list jams up as Alessia Cenci, a wealthy jockey, the child of a Derby winning jockey and one of the top bass of the jockey club disappear near the same time. Are these related events or do they connect in a sinister pattern. The character of Alessia reminds me of Patty Herst and the front page news for months until she was returned.
A good swift suspense mystery, which highlights a little known occupation and it dangers both to the victims and the operator.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

Beware the Penguin 1 by .. P. Dever-Reynolds (Santa Fe, NM United States)
Great story originally, but the Penguin version is condensed and simplified for kids, and reduced to 83 pages.

Fraught with Tension 5 by .. Teresa F. Bailey (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
The Danger is a thrilling ride. The horse racing world collides with kidnapping. Dick Francis has wrought a wonderful and taught mystery. I have read it again and again and I love it each time. This is my all time favorite Francis!

Each book an education 5 by .. P. Schumacher (atlanta, GA United States)
This is one of Dick Francis's best thrillers--but all are good.

One of the nicer things about Dick Francis is that each novel is an in-depth education in a particular profession. This one is about kidnapping: its prevention and cure.

Though it was written in the 80s, and some technology has changed, it is ageless and as relevant as ever.

As always, the characters are unusual, interesting, and likable--even the bad ones.

The second and final nail.... 5 by .. Jared Garrett (Utah)
in my coffin of fan-hood of Dick Francis. I first read Banker and loved it. The Danger is a high stakes adventure that finds twists where you would never expect them. Francis develops another excellent character in Andrew Douglas and Douglas' inner dialogue helps the story be truly captivating. The action is vivid to the point that you will be lucky if your life stays normal during the time you are reading this book. It is another installment in a vast collection of entertaining reads by Mr. Francis.
