the kids love the book & I love the price 5 by .. Kimberly A. Smith (sumter,s.c.)
This is one of the best purchases i made. you do compromise on the pictures. because there so compressed. But, other than that, It's a def. for your kids library.

Great collection of childen stories 4 by .. LadySihaya (Bs.As., Argentina)
This is truly a wonderful collection of classic children stories if you want to have great variety but have space or money issues. As another reviewer stated, it's ideal for travel or to explore new children stories and decide which ones to buy in a separate and full edition.

However it's a pity that because of a space issue, they have decided to leave out some pictures. Also, I have seen other anthologies (e.g. Your favorite Seuss: A baker's dozen by the one and only Dr. Seuss) that have managed to join in one page spread several pictures of a storybook in a more coherent way... Here, in some of the stories they have done it nicely, in others (e.g. Good Night Moon) they have just pasted into a page spread several pages of the book in very small detail. It's a pity that they couldn't make the book a bit bigger and longer to include the pictures in greater detail, or that they didn't edit two separate volumes so that they could fit the stories better.

As a plus, the stories are color-coded and cover a great variety of age-ranges, so it's still a great travel book if you have children of very different ages.

All this said, this is still a great way of getting to know a big selection of children's classics. In my case, I don't live in an English-speaking country, so I have to deliver children books for my kid via air-mail and it would be impossible to get these many books in their individual editions, so I'm very grateful to the Editor for making this excellent collection of children stories readily available for everyone.

Excellent Collection 5 by .. DaddyO IN SFO (San Francisco, CA)
This book is an uncanny collection of most of our favorite children's stories that we have collected over the years plus many more we had not yet discovered. It's a great collection. The only downside of the collection is that the stories are displayed with several of the original "pages" per page which is distracting to young readers. They see the pictures from many pages at once while the parent tries to read the through the words left to right.

Wonderful Book! 5 by .. Tanya Willey ()
I received this book as a gift when my boys were 17 months old and 1 month old. The are now 2 and 3, and we still read from this book just about every day. The Table of Contents suggests age groups for each story, but I have found that my kids are pretty much up for any of them, even at a young age. This time I purchased it as a gift for someone else, and if Amazon continues to offer amazing prices on it ($27 instead of $40 at major bookstore) then I will buy it for everyone I know that has a child. It's one that your kids will never tire of (just keep it out of reach to keep in good condition, as they will want to flip through the picures on their own...).

HEAVY but worthwhile! 5 by .. S. Jorgenson (WI)
Yes, this book IS heavy! But my tiny 2 year old loves it so much that she lugs it off the shelf and hauls it on the couch for us to read. That's 5 stars in her book. My 4 and 6 year old love to flip through and choose numerous stories for us to read - they enjoy this book also. I am glad it's in our children's book collection.

Great book! 5 by .. E. Doty ()
I bought this book for my 4-year-old granddaughter and within the first week we had read through it completely and at least half of it twice. It's a great compilation of top-notch classic picture books and in a quality presentation. It's a little too heavy for a child to cart around with him or her, but should be a favorite at story time. All the books inside are full sized with reprinted original illustrations.

FIVE Stars to the Nth Degree from a tough critic 5 by .. Hugo & Grace (Costa Mesa, CA United States)
Publisher Harper Collins really lives up to its name. I was so impressed with the carefully chosen picture books they compiled. There were so many children's books and I wanted to find the best ones for my child and I did with this book! There are 12 unabridged books in this book and the picture quality is EXCELLENT. The paper is glossy stock grade and the pictures are just beautiful. Good Night Moon looks much better in this book compared to its individual board book and hardcover versions in this book. Baby Says is another picture book that is mainly a pictorial but was perfect for my infant who was able to comprehend the story. Her reactions were just amazing. There is another picture book out there called "The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury" and it does not compare. A good majority of the books in their book is abridged, the paper quality is like any other and, although the book is large in its dimensions, the pictures were shrunken down quite a bit because they put multiple pictures per page on some stories. In addition, some of their book choices were great but a lot of them weren't unlike Harper Collin's book. They really chose only the best. I only wish they came out with another volume. This book contains two books appropriate for infants, Goodnight Moon and Baby Says. The rest of the books will grow with the child.

Practically sells itself 5 by .. Craig Clarke (New England)
This is the kind of book that should sell itself -- a collection of classic children's stories. At a time when going to the children's section of any bookstore can be overwhelming, it's a relief to find something like the Harper Collins Treasury of Picture Book Classics. It takes away all the guesswork by being filled with over a dozen stories that are already tried and true, stories that are proven entertainment to a wide variety of children. And they're all in one book (though it's a heavy sucker, to say the least). The contents are as follows:

Goodnight Moon written by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd
Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
Crictor by Tomi Ungerer
A Baby Sister for Frances written by Russell Hoban, illustrated by Lillian Hoban
Leo the Late Bloomer written by Robert Kraus, illustrated by Jose Aruego
William's Doll written by Charlotte Zolotow, illustrated by William Pène Du Bois
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie written by Laura Joffe Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond
George Shrinks by William Joyce
Baby Says by John Steptoe
From Head to Toe by Eric Carle
Pete's a Pizza by William Steig

In addition to these timeless stories, the Harper Collins Treasury of Picture Book Classics contains short author and illustrator biographies (such as what other books they've done) and useful ideas for sharing the story further with children (like concepts to discuss). And all proceeds from the purchase go to First Book, which donates books to needy families. It's a win-win situation, and not only for you and your children, but for others as well.

GREAT book...for all ages! 5 by .. K. Bishel (Baltimore, MD)
This book is a wonderful collection of classic children's stories! Not only will kids love it, but as an adult, it was very nostalgic to flip through and revisit some of my favorite stories as a kid. Who doesn't love "Goodnight Moon" and "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie"?? Just a good time, fun read for everyone. I gave this book as a gift...and I think I may have to purchase another one just to keep for my own personal collection!

Product Description

Jamgon Kongtrul's Treasury of Knowledge in ten volumes is a unique encyclopedic masterpiece embodying the entire range of Buddhist teachings as they were presented in Tibet. The Elements of Tantric Practice sets forth the inner system of meditation--that of highest yoga tantra, which comprises two phases. The phase of creation relies primarily on the use of the imagination to effect personal transformation. In the phase of completion, practitioners actually achieve this transformation by the use of powerful inner yogas that manipulate the inner energies and constituents of the mind and body, leading to the realization of the fundamental nature of mind and phenomena. Together these practices constitute, in Kongtrul's words, a magnificent tradition...cherished by scholars and siddhas of [ancient] India who achieved total realization [by relying] on it.

I love this book! 5 by .. Charlene Y. Folds (Roopville, GA USA)
I had checked out a version of this book at the library, and wanted a copy of my own. I have been purchasing Golden Books for the last 3 years (since the birth of my first grandchild). The have purchased almost all of the older books that are currently on the market. This book contains some stories that are hard if not impossible to find. My granddaughter loves these stories and I love reading them to her. My daughters have also come to love them because they think they are so strange. example Mister Dog. My copy went missing and I tried to buy it locally for two years. Amazon.com has become my friend!

Not sure about this version 2 by .. OlSkoolBGirl (Illadelphia)
I am not sure if this is the same book I had when I was a child. But there was a book called The Big Red Book of Little Golden Books, it was a superior book. This book not only had the Little Golden book classics such as Tawny Lion,Pokey the Little Puppy but had poems,Mother Goose fairy tales,ABC's,it had everything!
It had bright colorful illustrations, this was the best book ever.It had great craftsmanship and was hardcover.
I called Random House and to my dismay they said they have no record of this masterpiece! I was broken up but this item sounds like an updated version of the book.It sounds like nobody wanted to take time to put in the illustrations. RH should have just re-issued the original of this book;it would have been money well spent.

Extremely Disappointed 1 by .. K. Herring ()
I bought this book hoping it would be like the little golden books i grew up with. There was maybe one story in this book that i had as a child. There were no stories that i was looking forward to sharing with my son; little red ridding hood, goldilocks and the three bears, etc. I know little golden did those stories because i had them. So far none of the stories I have read in this are even worth reading twice. So disappointed!

Not picture books in this edition 2 by .. S. Newland (Colorado Springs, CO)
I purchased this book for my 15 month old son because I had such fond memories of Little Golden Books from my own childhood. At such a young age, my son needs to have pictures to follow the story - and this book is missing 90% of the pictures!!!! Each story is crammed into one or two pages, and the pictures, if they are shown at all, are out of order and tiny! I am returning this book, a little wiser about children's book "collections". Final analysis - the book is okay if you are an adult who just wants the nostalgia of the old Golden Book stories, but definitely not for young children.

Not the same 3 by .. M. Kapinos (IL)
This is a great book don't get me wrong but they are not the same as the individual books I grew up with - the pictures are smaller and that diminishes the effect of the story to a certain extent when the kid looks at the book with you whiel you read it. A little disappointing :(

Printed in China 3 by .. Sarah Sullivan (Midwest USA)
Please be aware that this children's book is printed in China. Although the content seems pretty good from skimming through it, I can't understand why it can't be printed in USA. I don't like sending our American money overseas to support the economy in China while our own American economy is hurting. I'm sure my children will enjoy hearing the stories.

Many Educational Tidbits! 5 by .. Arynn M. Curtis (Dallas, GA)
I bought this book for my 4 year old because it had many bible stories and they all had great pictures. Each story looked to be about 3-4 pages so were the perfect length for her focus. What I didn't know then, was that each story contains in-depth info and questions to make the child think. An example: the story of the creation of bugs lists several types of bugs and then asks the child to name others that might be in the yard. Both my daughter and I love this book!

The best kids book!!!! 5 by .. Kathleen Bliss (NY)
I received this book a year ago for my kids and I am now getting it for everyone that I can think of...it is a SUPER collection of all kinds of titles that I remember my mom reading to me as a child plus others that I have discovered since then. The best part...I don't have all those books tumbling all over the place...I can take this one book on a trip and be all set! All of the pictures are there too...not some kind of chopped down version! My 3 year old loves to have us read to him out of this book-stories for all levels of kids too!

Ray Bradbury: "So there you have it, a lifetime of first smelling the books, they all smell wonderful, reading the books, loving the books, and remembering the books."

Anatole Broyard: "The moment a book is lent, I begin to miss it. My mind goes to the gap as one's tongue goes to a cavity. Until the book is returned, I feel like a parent waiting up in the small hours for a teenage son or daughter to come home from the dubious party."

Leo Rosten: "There was no answer, no solution, no sop, no deliverance. What, then, did I do? I read faster."

Clifton Fadiman: "To read in bed is to draw around us invisible, noiseless curtains. Then at last we are in a room of our own and are ready to burrow back, back, back to that private life of the imagination we all led as children and to whose secret satisfactions so many of us have mislaid the key."

Anna Quindlen: "Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home."

`Books are the windows through which the soul looks out.' 5 by .. J. Cameron-Smith (ACT, Australia)
I love this book. I borrowed a copy but quickly decided that I needed to buy my own. How else could I dip into the essays, enjoy the quotes and debate the lists?

This book is both a self-contained banquet and a guide to all manner of bibliofeasts. This is a book for those of us who like possessing books as well as reading books. I am heartened to know that I am not alone in my reluctance to lend books except in the most exceptional of circumstances. No, rather than lend a book I'd rather gift a copy.

If this book is revised, I think the editors should consider including a paean to Post-it notes as a means of marking important quotes and passages. Wait, we probably should research the properties of the adhesive first. I don't want to damage my books.

Highly recommended.

Jennifer Cameron-Smith

A Delight! 5 by .. Julie Merilatt (Chicago, IL)
What a delightful little anthology that every devoted reader and collector should own. This book was my constant coffee-table companion for several weeks. I enjoyed sitting on the couch and reading an essay or story or list here and there. I really felt I could relate to the writers and their passion for books. My favorite essay was Rob Kaplan's "The Ritual," which describes his methodic routine of purchasing and cataloguing his books. I could relate to his meticulous practices, as I have my own specific methods upon attaining a book. Most enjoyable were the helpful lists, like "Ten Best Selling Books Rejected by Publishers Twenty or More Times," and "100 Great Novels in the English Language." These prompted me to get out my highlighter and evaluate what was I had read or what was in my library. This is the perfect book for all bibliophiles who, like me, can relate to Umberto Eco's statement that a library is a work in progress.

A great bedside book 5 by .. James D. Crabtree (Fayetteville, NC USA)
This collection of quotes, stories and other items about the love of books makes this a must-read for those who have the obsession. Loved the cartoons and enjoyed the lists. I found something here to laugh at, something to think about, something to look for. What more can you ask of a book?

Wonderful 5 by .. Mark Simonsen (Whittier, Ca USA)
This book is so much fun to read. This is a must read for anyone who loves books and who, like me, continues to buy books despite not having enough time to read the ones already owned. If you fit that description you will repeatedly see yourself in the quotes, anecdotes, and stories presented within this book.

Books, Books, Books 4 by .. takingadayoff (Las Vegas, Nevada)
This anthology celebrates the physical book, not the idea of books, or reading books, or writing books. There is something special about shopping for books, whether in a used bookshop, a megastore, or at the library. It is really a different pleasure than the actual reading of the book.

I found this book in my local used bookshop, in the new arrivals section. The paperback cover is a bit curled where someone opened it and left it. Someone marked the lists of great books, indicating which they had read, or perhaps which they hadn't yet read. I didn't mind the marks, in fact I enjoyed comparing notes with this unknown reader.

In addition to the lists and the cartoons, and the biblio-bibliography (not a misprint), I enjoyed many of the articles and essays, especially the more recent ones. A favorite was Harold Rabinowitz's (one of the editors) story of the day his friend didn't win the Pulitzer Prize.

I agree with another reviewer who wished that a few women had been included among the contributors here, there is an atmosphere of gentlemen's club here. And I'm afraid I really don't understand the compulsion to collect books. I love to read, but once I've read a book, out it goes. Of course, there are a few exceptions: if I am sure I'll want to read it again (unfortunately, most of those are library books), or if I want it for reference. Most books are not hard to find and I don't see any reason to keep a book for years on the offchance I'll read it again. If I eventually do decide to reread it, I can easily find another copy.

With that in mind, having enjoyed A Passion for Books, I will take it back to the used bookshop and trade it in for credit.

Classic Choice For Every Child's Library 5 by .. M. McClain (Texas)
I grew up with Eloise Wilkin's Golden Books so when I saw this collection in the store I was very pleased. I ended up not buying it at the time and when I went back a few months later they weren't carrying it anymore. I was so happy to find it on Amazon. I bought it for my 4 year old daughter's birthday and she has quickly made it her favorite story book. The illustrations, as usual are amazingly beautiful! The stories are classic and unlike so many other story books, I don't have to edit any of the content. ( I often see what or shut up, ect in children's books and change it to please be quite or yes mam, ect) I love that the stories are simple enough that my 8 year old enjoys reading them to her little sister at bedtime. This book goes everywhere with us and suprisingly my 4 year olds favorite story is Busy Timmy. Her favorite books as a baby were Good Night Moon and The Big Red Barn which Eloise Wilkin also did so I went on the hunt for more of her books and was very surprised at how many of my favorite child hood stories were attributed to her.

Finest Illustrators of all Time! 5 by .. Miss Dahl (PA, USA)
I gave this book to my daughter on her 2nd birthday and for over 7months now it has been one of her favorite books she has her Nonna read her "Busy Timmy" everyday and when its time for my daughter to do things on her own like use her potty or eat if you remind her that Timmy does them she just can't wait to do them as well! This book is a treasure for any toddlers library!

Love This Book!! 5 by .. Stephanie Bryant (Mississippi)
I love this book. I grew up with "We Help Mommy". It brought back memories and tears!

Beautiful book at a bargain price 5 by .. Lorelei Bryan ()
Eloise Wilkin Stories (Little Golden Book Treasury)
The sub-title says Little Golden Book Treasury and treasury is an appropriate title. This book is a treasure! Each of the 209 pages is a delight! The pages have a sentimental familiarity for me as I can remember relishing them as a child, reading them to my children, and now sharing them with my grandchildren. The reproduction is excellent- much better than some other publishers are offering- each detail still intact altho some of the images are as old as 1948. I heartily recommend this edition to anyone who enjoys the peaceful beauty of Eloise Wilkin's illustrations!
