My mother read it to me when I was 7... 5 by .. Carly S. (San Francisco, CA, USA)
Of all of the books read to me when I was little, few stand out more prominently in my memory than this one. Now, over twenty years later, I am so pleased to have just found my old copy, which I hope someday to read to my children. What a magical book!

Brilliant 5 by .. Michael Joseph (Keaau, Hawaii USA)
One of the best children's books I have run across. The book explains the consequences and dangers of the shadow world and the rewarding richness of standing in the light. It is presented in a non religious, simple and magical way. Opening the doors of understanding for children and reminding adults at the same time.

A magical book 5 by .. Jessica D. Nunes (USA)
My 6-year old's teacher reminded me about this book at our conferences. It is a magical journey for children to share. Sylvia lives in a cottage near the woods with her mother. She is very connected to the world of gnomes and fairies, and spends her days doing things I wish I could do with my girl - she bakes, paints, visits with the Old Woodsman who smells like the trees and love...She has a "Sister-in-the-Bushes" to talk to. She has friends in the village who come to her St. Nicholas party. It's an amazing life. Each night her mother tells her a story, usually connected to the events of her day. Then, Sylvia puts her "Wonder Book" out on her bedside table. During the night, the Rhyme-Elves come to paint a picture and write her a short poem connected to her day. The book is full of seasonal celebrations from Michelmas to Advent to St. Nicholas to King's Day. Sylvia loses her first tooth (which means that NOW she can go to school). I highly recommend this book to everyone looking to find something magical to read at bedtime. My daughter is spellbound. One minor fault, easily changed when reading - the dark gnomes, ones who are evil and scary (leading her into the woods when her mother told her not to go in alone, but helping her experience why she needs to mind her mother) are all referred to as 'black imps'. I changed that to 'dark imps'. PS - my daughter has had an easier time not being led by her inner 'dark imp' since we've been reading this together. But, I fight the guilts over not providing her with a Wonder Book of her own!

Quick delivery and book in great condition. 5 by .. Elena M. Guzman (Boulder, CO USA)
I was pleased to receive the book as quickly as I did. I was nervous that I would get it too late for my son's 7th birthday but no, I had a few days to spare. Thanks.

To be seven again 5 by .. Andrea M. Savar (Seattle,Wa.)
I was given this book when I was seven and have since cherished it for its beauty and sensitivity. It is a wonderful read aloud book for ages 6-8 and mostly 7 that is inspiring both for children and adults alike. Enjoy!

Little Golden Book 3 by .. N. Jolley (Tennessee)
The book was what I wanted. I hated paying more for postage than I
did for the book. Also the book was bowed and I had to put heavy
books on it to try to straighted it out. I was happy with the book,
just not the shipping.

Re-living your childhood 5 by .. D. Stephan (Queens, NY)
Golden Books are the best. Great illustrations and wonderful stories. My 4 year old daughter loves to have me read them to her at bedtime.
I had the same books as a child in the 70's.

A Tradition Continued 5 by .. Terri L. Cunningham ()
I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

Snow White by Don Williams 4 by .. ()
-Good book. Very original. I loved all 7 dwarfs. An emotional children book. Recommend for first readers, especially young girls.

Snow White done right.. 4 by .. Kellie (Sulphur, LA USA)
Since this is a book taken from Disney's film version, I can see where much change was made. The illustrations are beautiful, more colorful, brighter than the original film. Everything seems to be in order: from the Evil Queen sending the huntsman to kill Snow White (he was unsuccessful) to the Queen transforming into the old witch, handing the apple to Snow White and the dwarves taking care of her until the Prince comes and kisses her awake. Lovely little tale. We read it on a nightly basis at our home. My two year old fancies himself a dwarf..Happy.

In the small village of Hawkins Hollow, three best friends who share the same birthday sneak off into the woods for a sleepover the evening before turning 10. But a night of pre-pubescent celebration turns into a night of horror as their blood brother oath unleashes a three-hundred year curse.

Twenty-one years later, Cal Hawkins and his friends have seen their town plagued by a week of unexplainable evil events two more times - every seven years. With the clock winding down on the third set of seven years, someone else has taken an interest in the town's folklore. Quinn is a well known scholar of local legends, and despite Cal's protests, insists on delving in the mystery. But when the first signs of evil appear months early, it's not only the town Cal tries to protect, but also his heart.

Good plot, but flat characters... 3 by .. N. A. LeBlanc (CT, USA)
I did read this book and have now moved on to read the second in the trilogy. Although this is outside Roberts' norm, it is a good plot if you don't mind demons and witchcraft. My problem with this story though is that the main characters, especially Quinn, fall flat. The authors attempt at building a credible character just comes out as annoying. To try and make her a believable person she gives her dieting issues and the predictable jokes, which are supposed to be funny, just drag the story down. I actually found myself hoping she would kill off the character lol. But despite this, I find the book as a whole is good and not a complete waste of time... but there are better options from Roberts many novels.

scary, but.... 4 by .. starboxer (cochran, ga United States)
I will admit that I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and the boogieman really did scare me, but the whole concept of characters meeting and falling deeply in love in a matter of days does get old. Also, did anyone else note the similarities between this story and Stephen King's It? Remember? Scary sewer monster comes to town every 30 years to feed on the children, townspeople are oblivious to what's going on, 7 kids band together to battle creature, scare it away, have to reunite 30 years later, some fall in love....yada yada.

A HUGE Nora Roberts fan totally disappointed... 1 by .. Tamara Cooper (Colorado)
I am Nora Roberts' biggest fan. Period. Bought everything I could get my hands on. Read and re-read all her greats many, many times. BUT...I couldn't even finish this one. After about 60 pages, I put it down. I was bored, a condition I thought I would never experience with a Nora Roberts' book. Found myself skimming pages. If she would get back to GREAT romance writing, like the "Born In" series (the best!) or the Quinn Brothers series...wow...wouldn't that would be awesome? If she wants to write this "dark" stuff, fine--get another pen name and do it. But don't disappoint those of us who love the GREAT romances she's written. I would NOT recommend this series.

Review of Audio CD 4 by .. Ponda (...in the car)
I listen to the audio books whenever I can, and read the books I can't get on audio. Let me preface my remarks by saying that I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts' work; that said, there are certainly some books I enjoy more than others. Also, with audio books, another factor in the equation is the narrator.
I agree with previous reviewers that the characters could have been fleshed out a little more fully. I enjoyed the story and the narrator had a good voice while reading the parts of the three men, but fell short when trying to do the women, especially trying to give Layla a New York accent.
I do recommend this and enjoy the various types of stories (murder mysteries, romance, paranormal) that Nora Roberts can create.

Not as good as the Circle Trilogy 4 by .. Mercedes (Colorado, USA)
The first books I've ever read by Nora Roberts were the Circle Trilogy (Morrigan's Cross, Valley of Silence, Dance of the Gods). I was expecting this trilogy to be as good. This book takes place in Hawkins Hollow Maryland. In a nutshell it's about 3 best friends, born on the same day, same year, same time. They become blood brothers at the Pagan Stone and in the ritual they release something dark and evil. Every 7 years the evil takes over for a week and the townspeople basically go crazy. Enter 3 women who also have a connection to Hawkins Hollow and you have the beginnings of love relationships and fighting evil.

All the characters are very likable, it's well written, but it just didn't hold my interest. I started to get really into the book towards the end. It's a mild page turner. The love between Cal and Quinn is expected from the start. Fox and Layla I'm sure before the end of the trilogy will be involved. I was disappointed it took so long in the book to bring Gage back. And it's seems obivious he and Cybil will be a couple before the end of the trilogy.

As with Nora Roberts' Circle Trilogy the romance isn't overdone or too much. But the story line just isn't engaging enough to make it an exceptional book.

YES! Another Avalon book! 5 by .. ()
Bingo! I've been waiting for this ever since I saw it advertised, and it was even better than I thought it would be! It's a great doorway to another Avalon series with great new characters. The mages seem to have gotten quite a handle on their magic--well, except for Kara, who's having problems with hers.

And the big question that's answered is--is the magic always there, even if you sacrifice it?

Come to this book! It's calling to you. Listen! Hear it???

Pretty good book.. Could use a bit tweaking 4 by .. Nuthinbutboys (wouldn't you like to know)
I enjoy all of Nora Roberts books and after a few of her other series, thought this would measure up. Book 2 is pretty good.. not bad but it is lacking a few things, maybe it's the lack of steamy sex scenes or too much filler for other parts. I'm not sure. I like how Fox was asked to be the father of his sister's partner's baby. I like how she is incorporating the current views and generations into the stories. Book 1 was the best, but this was good. I like the interactions between Cal, Gage and Fox. It always is good entertainment!

The Hollow 5 by .. Jean M. Mantz (Pewaukee, WI)
Lives up to Nora Roberts' standards of excellent writing. It is another novel that you just don't want to put down. I am anxious to see how it all ends!

Has It's Moments 3 by .. Chelsea Marie Spencer ()
To start, I had trouble getting through this book the first time-it went from weird to boring and back in turns. I actually ended up listening to it on audio, only because I was determined to continue with the trilogy.

The Plot:

Fox and Layla are part of a group of six who are on a mission to fight an evil demon that soon threatens to take over Fox's home town, Hawkins Hallow. The are both gifted with unique psychic talents that include the ability to read minds. They find themselves drawn to one another as they work together to fight the demon.

The Best Parts of this Book:

Fox and Layla are actually very appealing characters, as are they all. Their romance is fun and fascinating, despite the distractions of the confused plot.

Why Only Three Stars:

This book is hard to get into. It begins to take a departure from logic and reason. The entire concept of the demon becomes less and less credible as the book progresses, and the explanations of it's existence are vague and flimsy. Equally weak are the 'ghosts' that constantly visit characters to deliver vague, fortune-cookie like advice.

Overall the concept is good, and there are some amusing portions, but the trilogy falls short of Nora Roberts' usual standard.

Second in the "Sign of 7" trilogy. 4 by .. mahikahn (Columbus, Ohio USA)
21 years ago three 10 year olds who were born on the same day, and are best friends, celebrate their birthday by sneaking into the woods to go camping & eat junk food. While there, they cut their wrists to merge their blood & become "Blood Brothers". But their childish ritual unleashes an ancient monster. Now every 7 years at their birthday the town goes crazy; murders, beatings, suicides, etc. This year it started months earlier and they know this will be the final showdown.

The basic plot of the series is good and I don't have a problem with the paranormal aspect as I expected it going into the first book

Why not a five? First, while I read the first book in the trilogy I`ve read a lot of books in between so it would have helped if there had been a review about the previous book in the beginning of this one.

Second, I could not tolerate the thing with Fox, Sage and Paula. I don't want to give it away to anyone, so I won't. I found it downright creepy, slightly nauseating and, at best, borderline incest. That none of the other characters, including Layla, had a problem with it was bizarre. Maybe this somehow factors into the next book but I'm not sure I have the stomach for it.

Love it 5 by .. Kellie J. Deane ()
This is one of the best books I've read lately. I love the author and her trilogies.

A Charming Story and Glimpse of an America Long Past 5 by .. J. A. Geary (Lakeland, FL USA)
I love "Good Night Moon" (and can recite it by heart). But "Seven Little Postmen" (and the recently re-issued "Mr. Dog," among others) reveals more about Margaret Wise Brown's genius as a writer than "a quiet old lady whispering 'hush.'"

Originally written in the late 1940's, "Seven Little Postmen" tracks the course of a letter from a little boy in the city to his grandmother in the country through all the stages (way back then) of the mail and all the different types of jolly "postmen" who process the letter from pick-up to rural free delivery back in the days before automation, before "postal employee" became synonymous with "homicidal gun-nut." Ms. Brown's humorous and poetic descriptions of the various jobs (who can remember when speeding trains used to "hook" mailbags from stands beside the tracks so they wouldn't have to stop?) are perfectly matched with Tibor Gergely's (who also illustrated "Scuffy the Tugboat" and "The Taxi that Hurried") colorful and charming illustrations.

Modern-day children will be intrigued by a delightful story with just the right amount of excitement and "mystery" (what's in the letter?) and enchanted by pictures of a more sedate and innocent time in America -- before e-mail, Fed Ex and text messaging took the anticipation and fun out of letters - both writing and receiving. Grown-ups, especially earlier Baby Boomers now becoming grandparents, who read this when they themselves were children, will rediscover a timeless classic.

Best Little Golden Book 5 by .. Cinderella (Eagle Mountain, Utah, USA)
I want to own all of Margaret Wise Brown's books. Her sing-song writing style just lifts me. I also liked that the boy in the story is so thoughtful toward his little grandmother.

What a great book! 5 by .. carolyn (Canal Winchester, OH)
If you're looking for some of the nice older books for your child, be sure to grab this one! It's just so sweet - a little boy has a secret and mails it off to his grandmother. It's a very neat and informative way to explain how the post office works to little ones. We just love this book in our house - it gets read quite a bit. A very nice old fashioned book that has endured the test of time. Highly recommend!

My favorite book of all time! 5 by .. Shea ()
I absolutely loved this book as a child and now read it to my son. I was so glad to be able to find it still in print. It's just one of those books (like The Night Before Christmas) that you remember all of the words, and the illustrations stay with you always. Just a simple little golden book, but so wonderful!

"Sakes alive! What is it about?" Sakes alive! The secret is out! 5 by .. Sean W. Hawley ()
I really love children's books that sweep the reader away on long journeys. Harold and the Purple Crayon is one such book. So, too, are the Phantom Tollbooth and, of course, Tolkien's works. The Seven Little Postmen does this on a more mundane level, but the journey is enjoyable, nonetheless. Here, Margaret Wise Brown and Tibor Gergely lead us across bustling city streets, fly us through sleet and hail, and send us roaring along shining rails, "Through gloom of night / In a mail car filled with electric light". Not only do we meet seven postmen along the way, but also a cast of colorful characters, including Mrs. Potter, "Who was busy making jam". With chickens and tires delivered R.F.D. via a crank-start motor, Mr. Gergely's distinct and detailed illustrations evoke a time now long gone.

I also recommend Scuffy the Tugboat and His Adventures Down the River, likewise illustrated by Tibor Gergely.

on the whole, a fantastic space opera 5 by .. S. Redston (Alphington Australia)
The entire sequence of the Saga of the Seven Suns is a great rollicking operatic drama with tremendous depth. Well worth getting stuck into. There are a lot of hours in it - perfect for distance running, gardening, long bouts of housework!

I enjoy the series more and more 5 by .. ostawookiee (Winston-Salem, NC USA)
The initial book in the series spends almost too much time "taking off", as you are introduced to the complex vastness of characters and history of Anderson's universe; but now that I'm well into the story and many of the plotlines are intersecting, I'm finding each sequel more enjoyable. The complexity is a very positive characteristic of the series now.

Much is revealed in this fourth book, but yet there's still so much more for which I'm dying to find out what's next. Saga of the Seven Suns definitely rates as one of my top five far-future sci-fi series.

Engrossing Story 5 by .. Ellen Morton ()
Kevin J Anderson is a great writer. This series is so engrossing due to the multiple sub plots and developed characters. I couldn't put it down and I am impatient for the next installment to arrive! His attention to detail, imagery and character development puts you right in the story sometimes so much so that I wonder what it would be like as a movie and who would play some of the key characters... Good reading!

The Tide Turns 4 by .. Arthur W. Jordin (Smyrna, GA USA)
Scattered Suns (2005) is the fourth SF novel in the Saga of Seven Suns series, following Horizon Storms. In the previous volume, Bill Stanna stole a Roamer scout ship and fled to the outer Osquivel system; Zhett Kellum had the stolen ship retrieved after the emergency beacon came on and brought back the body to the other EDF prisoners. Admiral Lev Stromo destroyed Rendezvous and imprisoned the surviving Roamers.

Kotto Okiah found a way to open the hydrogue ship and his Analytical compy GU stated that the technology therein was very similar to that of Klikiss robots. King Peter learned that Prince Daniel was exceedingly uncooperative and Queen Estarra discovers that she is pregnant. On Theroc, Celli found a wooden tree figure shaped like her brother Beneto growing in the Worldforest and it soon became animated.

In this novel, Chairman Basil Wenceslas tells King Peter and Queen Estarra that their schedule has been changed; they are going to Ildira to meet with the Mage-Imperator. Queen Estarra smuggles a potted worldtree aboard the transport as a gift to the Mage-Imperator. On Ildira, the Mage-Imperator greets the King and Queen graciously, bur snubs Chairman Wenceslas. He eagerly accepts the potted worldtree and thanks Estarra for the gift that brings back so many good memories.

On Ildira, Mage-Imperator Jora'h faces a rebellion by Designate Rusa'h and Prime Designate Thor'h. He sends Adar Zan'nh and his forty-seven intact ships to rebellious Hyrillka. When the maniple is detected, Prime Designate Thor'h pilots a transport toward them, demanding protection from Rusa'h. Other ships follow the transport, firing wildly. A royal shuttle also launches from the palace and Rusa'h announces that he is coming aboard in accordance with his Imperator's orders. Both vessels are allowed to dock on separate ships, but they prove to be loaded with armed vassals who attack the loyal crew.

Admiral Lev Stromo leads his Earth Defense Force battle group against Roamers in the Hhrenni system. Nikko Chan Tylar has taken time from his delivery of wentals to visit his parents there just before the EDF ships arrive. His parents tell him to leave and, with a combination of violent maneuvers and extreme acceleration, Nikko escapes the pursuing Remoras. But the EDF imprisons his parents and the other Roamers on the asteroids and take them to the prison planet.

On Dobra, Osira'h prepares herself for mental communications with the hydrogues. Designate Udru'h is unaware that Osira'h knows about his treatment of her mother, but she definitely doesn't trust him anymore. On their way to Ildira, Designate Udru'h and Osira'h pass the triple star system of Durris where the fighting between the hydrogues and faeros has fatally damaged the yellow star.

On Ildira, Osira'h is presented to the Mage-Imperator. Although she remembers her mothers love for Jora'h, she is not sure of her own feelings. When she notices a potted treeling next to the throne, she recognizes it as a worldtree from Theroc and yearns to touch it. Later Osira'h meets the Mage-Imperator in private and he allows her to touch the worldtree. Then he explains his relations with Nira to her.

In this story, Basil continues to ignore the political enemies that he is making by his self-centered acts, among whom are Peter and Estarra. He also continues to ignore warnings about the soldier compy programming. The magnitude of this mistake soon becomes apparent.

The Roamers are taking measures against hydrogue attacks, but don't seem to be undertaking any form of self-protection against the EDF. Their cut and run or surrender approach just isn't very believable. The Ildirans, however, are carrying through on their program to contact the hydrogues, with some success.

Of all the characters in this story, the compy DD has the most success so far. Over his objections, the Klikiss robots insist on changing his programming to give him freewill. After the operation, DD exercises this freewill to escape from the black robots and to search for Margaret Colicos. He experiences a certain amount of pleasure in considering how surprised the Klikiss robots will be when they learn the nature of his self-will.

Recommended for Anderson fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of space opera, implacable enemies and untrustworthy allies.

-Arthur W. Jordin

More twists and turns 5 by .. Shadow E. (Greeley Colorado)
If you liked the twists and turns of Mr. Andersons previous Seven Sun Saga books....you won't be disappointed. The story comes to a crescendo and when you think everything has been tied up nice and neat, the roller coaster hits a new turn in the track. The way he tells the story from the various charcters prespective is mesmerizing and leaves very little room to get bored. book lovers and money 4 by .. B.Friendly (Berlin, Germany)
I like this book (about opening a Chicago bookshop in 1946), because it shows that people who love books often have no business knack at all, and they tend to be idealists, too, they cannot help it:
Quote:
" They bought many books that morning.... It was wonderful- but it was awful when I had to take their money!"
"I am not interested in giving the public what it wants.... I have never had what the public wanted to read, and I lost out because of it.... I felt my job was to get people to jump- to read something, old or new, that could engage them in some real vision of human possibilities..."
Boy, they don't make'em like that anymore. In 2006 no one could run a shop like that. Too bad!

The Seven Stairs by Brent Stuart 4 by .. bookdealers2 (Webster, Texas, USA)
Good books by book sellers are hard to find, and this one is not only good, but definitely a pleasure to read. I wish it had included more details about how to succeed in the business of selling books, but I quickly realized that the author lived in an entirely different era than the one we have now of internet book selling. The author started in business at a time when the world was not sure that television would last and many wiser than he had not survived in the business of selling books.

Originally published in 1962, this book is the autobiography of Brent Stuart, a successful Chicago book seller. His venture into book selling started after World War II, when as a young man fresh out of the Army, he opened a small book and music store. He admits he knew almost nothing about business, and he shares what he learned while struggling to survive. He also shares about the people he knew, many of whom were very helpful to him in his early years. He drops a lot of names, no doubt many of whom were very well-known in that era, among the most famous of whom are Katherine Hepburn, Gore Vidal, and Ernest Hemingway. Unfortunately, the book does not have an Index, which would be helpful when one is looking to find an interesting part that is worth reading aloud to friends.

One of the parts of the book I found most interesting was his account of his business and social dealings with Dr. Lionel Blitzsten, a wealthy psychoanalyst. Dr. Blitzsten encouraged and helped him to develop a current catalog of psychiatric books, and the sales of those books greatly helped his business to prosper. He describes his first impression of Dr. Blitzsten in almost poetic yet graphic details: "What was really arresting (and somewhat terrifying) about this fat, puffing little man was the face. Above the glasses, the skull seemed all forehead; beneath, the clean-shaven skin was baby pink and the mouth shaped like a rosebud and just as red. That was it, the mouth -- and when he spoke, the voice was musical, no longer deep, but rather high in pitch." Dr. Lionel hosted social gatherings which many clamored to attend. The author defines the social atmosphere at Dr. Lionel's home as a coterie, and his eloquent description of it is:

"The machinery of a coterie is simple; the reasons behind its operation and its subtle influence on the lives of those drawn into its orbit are complex almost beyond endurance. Essentially, the coterie consists of a number of people who hold similar views on unimportant things. Everyone admitted must observe a cardinal prohibition: to say nothing fundamental about anything. All must follow the leader, employ a common stock of expressions, adopt the same mannerisms, profess the same prejudices, affect the same bearing, and recognize a common bond of impenetrable superficiality."

The author also provides details about early television in Chicago and his role in a daily TV program titled "Books and Brent," in which he reviewed books. He also briefly gives details about his personal life, the businesses of publishing and writing books, his favorite cabin retreat at Bark Point in Wisconsin, and his adventures in a summer stock theater in suburban Chicago. Some of his secrets about how to succeed in the business of selling books include hosting chamber music parties and author signings at his book store, as well as having the help and support of good friends.

Save this one for a treat on a long winter night. It is an easy and entertaining read, yet very interesting for its portrayal of the author and his era. While the author does not preach or make recommendations about how to succeed in the business of selling books, his philosophy is shared in the telling of his stories. His life is an American success story packed with interesting details about life and business in the 1950s.

Good Chapter Stories 4 by .. K. Sapp (Loveland, OH United States)
Held the attention of a 5 year old - this is not a early reader book - but is a chapter book that my 5 year old boy enjoyed.

The Seven Treasure Hunts 5 by .. ()
The book is about two boys named Jackson and Goat, and they have seven treasure hunts. Jackson has a bigger sister and likes to bother her. They also sometimes bury treasure so they can have fun finding it later. The seven chapters are very neat and cool. Chapter four is called The Hunt for the Missing Treasure. Read to find out what treasure they find. I would say that other kids my age will like to read this book it is funny and they will get a blast out of it.

A Total Delight! 5 by .. Loretta Buck (Liverpool, NY United States)
My son and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My son is entering third grade, but is struggling with reading at the level he should be at. This book is aimed for his age, but is still an easy reader. It helped give him the confidence he needs as it is aimed towards third and fourth graders and he could read it! Thank you Betsy Byars for realizing not all children read at the same level, but still need books appropriate for their age to keep their interest. The Seven Treasure Hunts is about two boys, Jackson and Goat, who use maps and clues to find eachothers treasures. Each boy takes a turn hiding stuff of their own and gives the other either a map or clue to find it. Of course things don't always go according to plans. There is the stolen chocolate popsicle which will make kids want to keep reading to find out what happened with it. And then dealing with Goats sister, Rachael a.k.a the ogre, will leave kids laughing. It is written with much humor for young and old alike. My son read this out loud to me and we both really enjoyed it. Thank you, thank you Betsy Byars.
