Product Description

The high-level language of R is recognized as one of the most powerful and flexible statistical software environments, and is rapidly becoming the standard setting for quantitative analysis, statistics and graphics. R provides free access to unrivalled coverage and cutting-edge applications, enabling the user to apply numerous statistical methods ranging from simple regression to time series or multivariate analysis.

Building on the success of the author’s bestselling Statistics: An Introduction using R, The R Book is packed with worked examples, providing an all inclusive guide to R, ideal for novice and more accomplished users alike. The book assumes no background in statistics or computing and introduces the advantages of the R environment, detailing its applications in a wide range of disciplines.

  • Provides the first comprehensive reference manual for the R language, including practical guidance and full coverage of the graphics facilities.
  • Introduces all the statistical models covered by R, beginning with simple classical tests such as chi-square and t-test.
  • Proceeds to examine more advance methods, from regression and analysis of variance, through to generalized linear models, generalized mixed models, time series, spatial statistics, multivariate statistics and much more.

The R Book is aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals in science, engineering and medicine. It is also ideal for students and professionals in statistics, economics, geography and the social sciences.

The R Book 5 by .. Kim L. Wagner (Michigan)

This book was for my son and it was just what he wanted. He was very happy with it!

It's about time... 5 by .. A. Hall ()
It's about time that software like R became available and popular, it is clearly the way to go. I've been learning it on my own for a few months now with the help of about a dozen online .pdf file manuals, and sometimes using the Nabble forum for R. I finally broke down and bought this book, and wish I would've bought it in the beginning. If I were to write a book on this subject, this is pretty much exactly what I would do...except I'd like to see a companion volume that explores the numerous packages, maybe with an emphasis on Bayesian methods, such as in the packages arm, boa, coda, MCMCpack, MNP, R2WinBUGS, etc., but hey, that's me.

If you've had it with other software that doesn't let you do everything you'd like to do, then I highly recommend R, and The R Book for starters.

Worth the money 3 by .. Governor (Sydney Australia)
This is a good book, if you are a lousy programmer and just want something to get you started in R. And that was me a couple of months ago.The style is conversational, the exposition patient. That's just what you need if you have been put off by the on-line documentation.

In its overall architecture, the book is a bit scatty. It spends a little too much time on statistical theory and, as other reviewers have said, not enough on the more advanced programming features of R.

But if you just want something to help you take those first few steps, you really can't go wrong with this, and it will remain a great reference for the basic functionality. Expect that at some stage will have to supplement this with material that iscloser to your specific interests, and you won't be disappointed.

Throurough and insightful. 5 by .. Zander Smith (Toronto)
This book is an excellent introduction to the R language and the statistical theory underlying it. It requires some patience as there is a considerable deal of repetition (the exercises are all very similar but gradually increase in complexity as one progresses from two way anova to generalized additive models and more). Also there are a few small errors (I did not mind these as they helped me realized that I was still concentrating) - the book could have used a keen editorial eye. Am very happy with my purchase.

Good content, disorganized presentation 3 by .. J. Felipe Ortega Soto (Spain)
Given the length of this book, and the list of contents covered, I had the highest expectations about it.

After spending 2 intensive months reading it, I have mixed feelings. Positive points are the large number of statistical models and methods described. The R examples are useful to follow the explanations, and the writing style is comprehensive. I agree with some reviewers in that the linear models section (Chaps. 9-19) is the most useful one. The last Chapter also presents useful tricks for dealing with graphs in R.

Unfortunately, I have 2 important complaints. The first one is about the presentation of contents: simply CHAOTIC. The author systematically abuses of cross-references. You will find sentences like "here we present an example of [method XX] that will be introduced on page XXX" throughout the entire book. This is disappointing, since it forces the reader to constantly move back and forth, looking for the relevant info. There is no point in presenting an example based on a method that you haven't introduced yet. Examples should be autonomous, and not frequently taken from previous data sets "already used in page YYY".

The second complaint derives from the previous one. The book is hard to use as both a reference manual and a companion for undergraduate or graduate students. Disregarding the comments from the author, if you don't have a solid theoretical background in statistical inference, regression analysis and linear models, you won't get very much benefit of this book. The author completely lacks of a rigorous, structured method for presenting new concepts. Even worse, important definitions and concepts are usually hidden in between of examples that has nothing to do with them.

In summary, if you already have a good theoretical background in statistics, this could be a useful add-on to your bookshelf (though be ready to spend a lot of side tags to map important concepts for later).

If you're looking for a introductory book with R, Springer has just published a second, expanded edition of the classic book by Dalgaard. If you're looking for a definitive reference manual of statistical methods illustrated with R, you will have to wait for something else, or look for specific titles (Like Faraway's "Linear Models with R"). For Ph.D. students looking for a comprehensive an up-to-date book on statistics with R, to improve their skills quickly, I still recommend the second edition of "Data Analysis and Graphics Using R", by Maindonald and Brown.

Product Description

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.

I hope we're going somewhere . . . 3 by .. Steady_01 (Denver, CO USA)
I am no where the writer George R.R. Martin has shown himself to be. But I am a reader who knows how to compare his works. The first two books were four to five stars, and number three was slightly less. A Feast for Crows continued the downward trend. GRRM got himself in a bind with the story and we ended up temporarily losing half of the characters and meeting a set of people the reader couldn't care about. Hopefully, this trend reverses itself quickly and substantially in the next book. A Dance with Dragons was supposedly close to completion when AFfC was published in 2005. Three years have passed and GRRM has not delivered nor has he indicated where he is in the story. His website indicates that he is busy in other areas and the series appears to no longer be a priority.

Excellent series! 4 by .. Joe Flasher (Boulder, CO)
This series was recommended to me by a friend and I fell in love with them. They're not always the happiest of books, but that keeps me guessing as Martin seems willing to part with some general fantasy norms. Definitely a good read.

I Hate Waiting... 3 by .. Michael Meyerhofer (USA)
If you're reading this, you're probably already a huge George R. R. Martin fan (if not, start with "A Game of Thrones", which is absolutely excellent) and you've heard some of the controversy surrounding this book's release, you're wondering whether to keep going with the series or hold off, etc.

First, I give credit where credit is due. Martin is still a Class-A writer; that hasn't changed. This is a riveting, emotionally taut book that, although quite a bit different in style from the previous books, still holds the reader's attention. (Like how I presume to talk for all readers everywhere?) Further, I think Martin's plan to cut what would have been an uber-huge Book 4 into Book 4 and Book 5 was a gutsy move--guts being something contemporary writers rarely display, especially when dollars and publishing houses get involved.

Still, I have to admit that I wasn't completely blown away by this most recent edition to "A Song of Ice and Fire". That's by no means an overall negative review, though. As I said, the writing here is still very good; I think the story lines and plot actually progress quite well, despite what some critics have said. I was particularly impressed with how Jaime and Brienne's respective characters developed. And I suspect that once Book 5 comes out, Martin's logic behind dividing the story will be more clear.

In the end, I really only have a couple complaints to this book, one of them being the very un-Martin-like ending. Don't worry; I won't spoil it if you haven't read the book yet. I'll just say that it's a towering cliffhanger that might have been forgivable if Martin weren't so patently slow in releasing these books. To make his EXTREMELY loyal, generally very intelligent and very grateful fans wait years in the real world just to find out what happens a couple seconds later in Westeros strikes me as a dirty trick. I was also alarmed to hear that Martin was working on other projects, rather than concentrating on getting Book 5 out there.

Granted, these are REAL books, not "Forgotten Realms" slush. As a writer myself (not that I'm comparing myself to Martin, of course), I understand that writing a good book takes time. Fans of the fantasy genre in general, though, are probably the most long-suffering readers out there. We have to contend with hackneyed writers by the dozen, so when a true writer like Martin comes along and hooks us with a series like "A Song of Ice and Fire" which requires a true investment on the part of its readers (read my review of "A Game of Thrones", if you like), we're naturally pretty impatient. I'm not sure Martin quite appreciates that.

All that rambling aside, "A Feast for Crows" IS a good book, perhaps not as emotionally taut as "A Storm of Swords", but still well worth buying.

ASOIAF's weakest, still genre's top 5 by .. D. Z. (Canada)
I am not going to argue - Feast is the weakest of the four books. I think almost every negative review makes fair points about it - the wordiness, the lack of action, the lack of characters we care about (yes, we know, they are returning in part V). I also think, comparing to good 90% of fantasy coming out these days, this book still feels strong, even if not like GoT/SoS/CoK.
There is plenty to enjoy within. The Kingsmoot makes all of Iron Isle chapters worthwhile. Jaime chapters, while not as good as part III's are necessary - Jaime needed that quiet time. Cercei is fun - we've never got into her head before and she is the sort of character holds within much more than she shows. Brienne cliffhanger is, well, lame, but witnessing the wartorn land through her eyes, leading to Stoneheart's outlaws is a trip worth your time.
Call me Martin fanboy. I don't care. Good Martin, bad Martin, the bar he's set won't be beaten in awhile.

Leaving 3 by .. Ron (Jersey)
After devouring the first three books, I really had to push through this one. The story didn't flow as well as the first 3 books in the series. I don't know if it was the lack of so many characters I wanted to read about, or the fact that Martin is becoming a little long winded with his tale. But I just didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. I think I won't be picking up any more of the series until it is completely done. Mr. Martin is no spring chicken and not always in the best of health, I would hate to invest so much time into a series that may never get finished by him(can you say Wheel of Time). A Dance of Dragons is nowhere in sight and this series was supposed to be 7 books, which I guess is now 8 since this part was split in half. If each volume takes as long to get released, I will be an old man before the end comes. I think instead of releasing children's books, going back to his "Aces" series and other side projects, I wish he would devout the time to the one series that most of his fans want to see finished.

Go anywhere, do anything, Older PC's are modern again ! 4 by .. CC from NJ (from NJ, USA)
Make your old PC a work horse with Damm Small Linux, and do it with out alot of technical knowledge with this book.

I took a 10 year old PC (Pentium I / 166Mhz ) and with the help of this book, it now runs as a web surfing, print, photo, music serving station on my home network.

Saving lots of $$$, not having to buy an expensive server appliance, and keeping the old electronics out of the land fill.

If you have an old PC in the basement and a desire to do some thing with it, I highly encourage you to get this book !

Linux for an old PC 5 by .. Jerry H. Chambers (Landers, Ca.)

The Official Damn Small Linux(R) Book: The Tiny Adaptable Linux(R) That Runs on Anything (Negus Live Linux Series) 4 by .. Rob ()
Good book and software to get started. Users should have a basic understanding of computers and PC operating systems if using on older machines. But the software worked great out of the book. I would recommend.

Well worth the investment! 5 by .. Michael Zucker (Charlotte, NC United States)
This book consolidates material that you would otherwise have to spend days scouring the web and forums to find. (Not to mention the misinformation that is often floating around out there.) Damn Small Linux is a great operating system with a great development team and community. And this book provides tons of detail on how to use it.

One of Two Must Have Embedded Linux Books 5 by .. B. Mitchel Latta (Vancouver, United States)
I first started my journey into DSL via another book; Craig Hollabaugh's "Embedded Linux, Hardware, Software, & Interfacing," 2002, ISBN 0-672-32226-9. This book is extremely valuable, if you wish to know how to put together a small single purpose embedded Linux system. However, by the time that I began to read it in 2005 (marriage, moving), it was beginning to show it's age. Most of the links to additional reading, at the end of each chapter, were broken. In addition, most of the projects that I have been associated with, require some form of primitive GUI.

Enter DSL! I fell in love immediately. Here were all of the missing pieces. Until the appearance of this book, the web and patience, were the only way to gain a good grounding in the techniques specific to this distro. The contents of this work are not just a repeat of that found on the net. The materials included are complementary to that information.

Don't just read the 1st half of the book. Read the project material also. There are gems to be gleaned therein.

The only complaint that I have about the book is in the binding, which is quite stiff, and therefore does not easily lend itself to setting next to the keyboard, or project workspace. I took my working copy (I have three) to an office supply store and had it coil bound for ~ $6.00. Problem solved.

Good job guys...

Product Description

The authorized biography of the creator of Middle-earth. In the decades since his death in September 1973, millions have read THE HOBBIT, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, and THE SILMARILLION and become fascinated about the very private man behind the books.

Born in South Africa in January 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was orphaned in childhood and brought up in near-poverty. He served in the first World War, surviving the Battle of the Somme, where he lost many of the closest friends he'd ever had. After the war he returned to the academic life, achieving high repute as a scholar and university teacher, eventually becoming Merton Professor of English at Oxford where he was a close friend of C.S. Lewis and the other writers known as The Inklings.

Then suddenly his life changed dramatically. One day while grading essay papers he found himself writing 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit' -- and worldwide renown awaited him.

Humphrey Carpenter was given unrestricted access to all Tolkien's papers, and interviewed his friends and family. From these sources he follows the long and painful process of creation that produced THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE SILMARILLION and offers a wealth of information about the life and work of the twentieth century's most cherished author.

Great Biography despite a few missing pieces 5 by .. hollow man (America)
This review is based upon the first edition which was written in 1977.

This biography is fair and gives a vivid detail of not only the life of Tolkien but also the times and events that shaped the man. I would have liked to have seen more into the light of his religion as well as the depth of his relationships particularly with Lewis,Dyson, and Williams.

I have to say that the ending had me near tears. It is hard to imagine that a man that has brought so much joy and creativity into the world that he would have died on a bed of loneliness. It was also sad for me to hear that the relationship between him and C.S. Lewis had fallen out and Lewis passed away before there could ever be any "rewrites" to make up for the past trespasses.

All in all this is one of the better biographies out and I will look forward to reading other biographies out there on Tolkien to give a solid comparison to this one.

A Surprisingly Pleasant Read 5 by .. L. Wilson (Hyde Park, NY)
When I set about to read this book, I greatly feared that I'd be bored before I reached chapter two. Biographies have never seemed particularly appealing, especially those of authors. Yet I really wanted to learn a little more about Tolkien and the influences in his life that led to the creation of Middle Earth, so I prepared to suffer through. Carpenter, however, has a very conversational tone which made the read a pleasure. His use of actual letters, pictures and manuscripts, which the Tolkien family kindly gave him access to, was masterful. The text from those papers he chose to include was illuminating, but didn't weigh down the book as frequent quoting tends to do. Carpenter clearly had a sense of who Tolkien was, especially since he had the pleasure of speaking with the man himself.

Carpenter also understands that most people will be reading this book for a glimpse at the creation of Middle Earth, and gives ample focus to that throughout. But he never lets that detract from tackling the man as a whole, giving the reader a well rounded picture of the man behind the legend; from his childhood and relationship with his mother, to his Oxford days and friendship with C.S. Lewis, to his family life with wife and children. A marvelous read for any fan of Tolkien.

Very enjoyable book 5 by .. R. Lewis (Arlington, TX USA)
I enjoyed this book very much. I learned a lot about Tolkien, but it wasn't like reading a text book. The book seemed balanced, not overly critical or sickenly flattering.

Spectacular Job 5 by .. N. Multunas ()
J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the world's most famous and well-known authors. He has and will continue to inspire the written works of others. His famous The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Silmarillion, and his other books about middle-earth have been read by millions everywhere in the world. His books have been translated into over one hundred languages and sold in many countries. Humphrey Carpenter is one of the many people who has always revered and been inspired by Tolkien. He visited Mr. Tolkien and asked him about his life. He wrote this book for others like him who wish to know about Mr. Tolkien's past experiences and what occurred to inspire him to write his fantastic novels.
J.R.R. Tolkien had a normal life. He wasn't rich or poor, and he didn't grow up in a powerful family. He grew up with his brother and his parents in South Africa. After his parents died, Tolkien fought in the First World War. During this time, Tolkien had to support his brother and his family. He had to take courage and stand up for what was right. This is much like the role and attitude of Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird. Afterwards, Tolkien taught at Oxford, where he and other college professors, including C.S. Lewis, formed a group called "The Inklings." Mr. Tolkien started writing The Hobbit, and eventually, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This book shows how Tolkien had a normal life; having hardships like everyone else does, as well as positive experiences.
Tolkien by Humphrey Carpenter is a great read for anyone who is considering a career in writing, as well as anyone who loves Mr. Tolkien's books. Humphrey Carpenter does a great job of outlining Mr. Tolkien's life and achievements. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I believe that anyone can read this book. Mr. Carpenter used great vocabulary, and he had great development of his writing. I send my compliments to Mr. Carpenter for his spectacular job of writing this book.

This book is fairly typical of R.L. Stine's writing style, slightly spooky but nothing that will keep you up at night unless you're in the 8-10 crowd. If you have a bit of nostalgia for the old "Are You Afraid of the Dark" type shows on Nickelodeon, you'll probably get a charge out of this.

Excellent! 5 by .. movie luver (Texas)
I just picked up the hardcover edition yesterday at the bargain section of my local bookstore. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It's in chronological order of R. Crumb's work broken into chapters. Each chapter starts with a write up by him telling about what was going on in his life at that time, and how some of the drawings came to be. I find him to be a fascinating artist. He bares his soul in his work, not really caring how he appears or what people think.

MUST HAVE in Hardcover if you can 5 by .. Frederick Scott (Sierra Nevada)
I have the hardcover edition. I collect Robert Crumb's works and this is a favorite of everyone looking at my collection. It you are an art student this along with his Gotta Have'Em Portraits of Women by R.Crumb is good resource material. I'd give The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book in (hardcover) ten stars if I could. I have not had the opportunity to look at the soft cover version but I would bet it is well done.

Confessional comix 5 by .. Kerry Walters (Lewisburg, PA USA)
A generation ago, American poets such as Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Anne Sexton gave birth to a genre that's come to be known as "confessional poetry." Their verse revealed intimate facts about their lives that simply weren't spoken of in polite company: fears, phobias, sexual hang-ups, pettiness, depression, suicidal tendencies. Some of their work wound up being rather pathetic, more confessional than poetic. But when it was good, it invited readers to face their own demons.

Robert Crumb, whom the art critic Robert Hughes has called the "Breughel of the 20th century," is a confessional artist whose chosen genre is comics. For 50-odd years (with the emphasis on "odd"!), R. Crumb has explored his many identities and personae in thousands of sketches, drawings, and paintings. The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book is actually an autobiography put together from a handful of the work Crumb has produced over the years. It's interspersed with essays by Crumb on his childhood, school days, the hippie scene in San Francisco, his marriages, his "personal obsession with big women," his spiritual yearnings, and his love of old music. Taken together, it's a fascinating portrait of a man who's dared to explore some of his deepest and darkest places, and to do so (at least sometimes) publicly.

Crumb believes that the pivotal moment in his personal and artistic life was the period in the mid-60s to the early 70s when he dropped acid on a regular basis. Although he sometimes worries that he might've fried his brain, he also thinks that the LSD trips liberated his psyche and helped him break through to new and deeper levels of creativity. The LSD was, he tells us, his "road to Damascus."

Perhaps. It's true that Crumb's work has changed over the years--it's become more brutally honest, more introspective, darker and at the same time funnier. Perhaps the LSD had something to do with it (although, personally, I quite dislike some of the work that comes from that period, finding it rather flat and silly). But I suspect that the single greatest influence on Crumb was his childhood and his family, especially his brother Charlie, who seems to have been just as much a genius as Robert. Crumb the man really is the child of Crumb the boy. The LSD may've helped Crumb get in touch with the raw energy generated from those days.

Crumb has become notorious for the sexuality of some of his comics, and has taken his share of political correct knocks. But The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book makes clear that the bottom line of much of his art is his existential need to explore and expose the shallowness and absurdity of much of modern life. Above all, as he tells us (p. 247), he wants to tell the truth, not only about himself but about us as well. Whether it's in the pages of "Zap" or "Weirdo" comics, or in panels featuring Shuman the Human or Mr. Natural, Crumb continuously questions racial, sexual, cultural, and artistic conventions, pushing the envelope as far as it can go and frequently causing readers discomfort. There's also a longing on Crumb's part for deep meaning in a universe that appears crazy. This most often reveals itself as nostalgia for bygone days (his love of "old" music, for example), but also more explicitly as a yearning for a god that he can no longer fully believe in and frequently mocks.

Reading R. Crumb is an intense experience. Like all good art, his stuff can make one laugh with joy or send shivers down the spine. The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book is a good place to start if you're just discovering Crumb, and an equally good collection to help long-time admirers get some idea of the big picture of Crumb's work and to better appreciate its depth. It's also a good catalyst for getting in touch with one's own multiple identities.

Worth every penny 5 by .. RS (Bliss, CA)
Just about every huge page (this book is big!) is filled with inspired color drawings from the legendary underground artist. Crumb gets very personal in this book, it's incredibly honest and, at times, deep. He takes the reader on a nostalgic journey through his childhood, life, and career. It's about growing up, finding the artist within, and adjusting to the insanity of the world. Or, you can simply read it for the edgy, often sexual comics. Either way, this is a big heavy book that is hard to pick up, but harder to put down.

Ultimate Crumb 5 by .. Jack Rothman (NY USA)
This book is the ultimate Crumb. You won't be disappointed if you love his work.

This new critical study explores Tolkien's major writings (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Beowulf: The Monster and the Critics, The Letters, The Silmarillion and The History of Middle-earth volumes), Tolkien and fairy tales, the mythological, political and religious aspects of Tolkien's Middle-earth, the critics' response to Tolkien's fiction over the decades, the Tolkien industry (merchandizing, toys, role-playing games, posters, Tolkien societies, conferences and the like), Tolkien in visual and fantasy art, the cultural aspects of The Lord of the Rings (from the 1950s to the present), Tolkien's fiction's relationship with other fantasy fiction, such as C.S. Lewis and Harry Potter, and the TV, radio and film versions of Tolkien's books, including the new Hollywood interpretations of The Lord of the Rings. Product Description

Conflicting views are advanced on the Messiah, the Messianic kingdom, the origin of sin, Sheol, the final judgement, the resurrection, and the nature of the future life. There is an elaborate angelology and demonology, and much space is devoted to the calender and the heavenly bodies and their movements. Babylonian influences are here manifest and in a slight degree Greek. This is a translation by R. H. Charles from the Ethiopic Text with a complete analysis and notes. Considered indispensable to students of both the Old and New Testaments in understanding the problems underlying the Bible prophecies. In its present form the Book of Enoch is made up of various elements belonging to different dates and a diversity of authorship and more properly should be spoken of as "Books" of Enoch. One part belongs to the earlier Book of Noah. The following is an extract from Mr. Charles' quite long and detailed Introduction: . . . To describe in short compass the Book of Enoch is impossible. It comes from many writers and almost as many periods. It touches upon every subject that could have arisen in the ancient schools of the prophets, but naturally it deals with these subjects in an advanced stage of developement. Nearly every religious idea appears in a variety of forms, and if these are studied in relation to their contexts and dates, we cannot fail to observe that in the age to which the Enoch literature belongs there is a movement everywhere, and nowhere dogmatic fixity and finality. Though at times the movement may be reactionary, yet the general trend is onward and upward. In fact the history of the development of the higher theology during the two centuries before the Christian era could not be written without the Book of Enoch.

This may be the greatest book I have ever read about the judgment and the leadership in these last days to get us safely to the other side in these last days. It lets one see as the earth fell there was a civilization that did not fall and that this civilization would be here to help us as mankind and the earth takes the next step towards ascention. It gives detailed information on those that corrupted mankind in its inocence and how this was done. It lets us know that there will be leadership set up in the next world. Maybe one of the best things about this book is it is not written to any one type of people, it is written equally to all mankind. It covers the pre-existance in ancient times of the leadership in the next world. It explains plainly some of the metaphores used in this book and the Bible. There is good detail on the punishments and rewards of the judgment. It may be suprising to some to learn how (or who) will decide some of these judgments. It explains how evil survived the flood.

Without question, purchase the R.H. Charles translation! 5 by .. Carol A. Foreman ()
This Book of Enoch needs to be in the hands of every serious Bible student as an indispensable aid in understanding the New Testament regarding the evolution of theology between 200 BC and 100 AD, and also the Old Testament concerning problem prophetical passages. The book was written by a number of Jewish writers around the second century BC, and was considered inspired Scripture in the century before Christ and up to the third century AD by such early Church Fathers, as Justin Martyr, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertullian. It was eventually removed from the canon of Scripture in the fourth century and was virtually lost to Western Christendom until the early 1800s AD, when Laurence published the first English translation based upon a single Ethiopic manuscript. There are several other popular versions in print today, but the only translation worthy of serious study is the R.H. Charles edition, published in the early 1900s after twenty years of extensive research. His translation is based upon 23 Ethiopic manuscripts and all available source fragments of the time. Compared to other translations, the Charles version is quite exhaustive in the number of pages (nearly twice as many as other editions). He, alone, offers an extensive, in-depth Introduction of over 100 pages, and a comprehensive analysis and criticism of the text, plus accurate verse numbering. This is definitely the version to purchase without question! Two other important ancient books readers might want to consider are The Book of Jasher Referred to in Joshua and II Samuel (1840 edition), and The Book of Jubilees translated from the Ethiopic by Schodde, offered by Artisan Publishers.

Excellent book for insight into ancient biblical theology 5 by .. Amy R. Creed ()
What a helpful, insightful addition to understanding the Scriptures and theological subjects! R. H. Charles offers an excellent English translation of the Ethiopic Text. His additional notes and analysis contribute added clarity to this work. This book is another fine example of the unique, unusual biblically based books offered by Artisian Publishers.

R. H. Charles Translation

This is a translation by R. H. Charles from the Ethiopic Text with a complete analysis and notes. Considered indispensable to students of both the Old and New Testaments in understanding the problems underlying the Bible prophecies.

In fact the history of the development of the higher theology during the two centuries before the Christian era could not be written without the Book of Enoch.

From what has already been said it is clear that no unity of time, authorship, or teaching is to be looked for. Indeed, certain considerable portions of the book belonged originally not to the Enoch literature at all, but to an earlier work, i. e. the Book of Noah, which probably exhibited in some degree the syncretism of the work into which it was subsequently incorporated. This Book of Noah clearly embraced chapters 6-11, 54-55, 60, 65-69, 106-107.

The analysis and notes are an excellent addition to this work, enabling the reader to better understand the subject matter.
