Perfect for ALL writers 5 by .. Rachel Carrington (South Carolina)
As an author, I'm always on the lookout for books that can help with publicity, marketing, and promoting. This book was a pure gem.

This book is worth the purchase price just for Chapter 11 (E-mail Blasts) alone. With tips for propelling your book to the top of the bestseller lists by e-mail marketing, this chapter takes you by the hand and leads you through the process step by step in a quick and painless way.

This book doesn't just tell you how to promote and publicize your book; it shows you with sample letters and action steps.

If you're ready to pump up your promotion and get your book noticed, then this book should be on your list of must-haves!

A must-read before you start writing 5 by .. Stuart Gustafson (Boise, ID)
While I own all four of the "Author 101" books by Rick Frishman and Robyn Spizman, I feel this one is the most valuable. In fact, I wish I had it BEFORE I started writing my first book. The information and helpful tips included from these industry insiders is worth a hundred-times the price of the book. I have met and spoken with both Rick and Robyn, and I will attest that what they tell you in this book is gospel truth.
After you read this book, you will gain insight into how best to plan the marketing and publicity of your book even before you write it. This is key information whether you are using a traditional publisher, or if you are self-publishing. In fact, if you are self-publishing, READ and MEMORIZE chapter 8 on Interviews -- this will be the primary source of your income.
I highly recommend this and the other three books in the "Author 101" series.

    Happy reading and successful writing,

The Savvy Author's Guide to Book Publicity 4 by .. Dr. Tami Brady (Calgary, Canada)
The Savvy Author's Book Publicity is a guide to help authors make the best use of their book publicist and publicity opportunities. The author, as professional publicist, has seen first hand a lot of the mistakes that authors make when promoting their book. Often in an attempt to help their publicist, they actually hinder their efforts. The Savvy Author's Guide gives authors ideas on ways that they can work with their publicist to make the best use of his or her skills. This book also gives tips on how to make the best use of any potential promotional opportunities and what to do once your publicist starts to focus his or her attention elsewhere.

The Savvy Author's Book Publicity is somewhat unique among books about promotion. Many such books focus on the things that authors can do to promote their books themselves. Rarely do these books mention anything pertaining to publicists beyond a sentence stating find a good publicist. However, this book states in a straightforward way not only what you can expect from your publicist but also how to actually use his or her skills to better your promotional efforts.

My Publisher Recommended This - Glad I Bought it! 5 by .. Stephanie Riseley ()
Love from Both Sides: A True Story of Soul Survival and Sacred Sexuality That's my book, and I thought that writing it was hard, and then getting it published seemed almost impossible. But once that was accomplished, I discovered that the most challenging task of all was getting publicity. Thankfully, my publisher recommended "Red Hot Internet Publicity," and so I now can read Penny Sansevieri's sage and helpful advice. If you're reading this review, you must have a book, yes? And, like me, you might be inundated with so many internet "helpers" who insist that the only way to market your book is to pay them $4000 or more. Well, Penny proves them wrong. Her website advice alone is worth the price of her book -- keep web copy short and simple, because people only skim. "Don't yell at me, that's my mother's job." Meaning, don't use caps or exclamation points. So she's got a sense of humor. As I write this, it's Christmas Eve 2008, and this year people have lost lives, lost fortunes, and lost hope. But our job as writers is to inspire, and Penny's book is inspirational. So, if you're about to give up on writing, selling or publishing your own book, give yourself the gift of buying hers, and start 2009 with the resolve that this is your year to succeed. Good luck to all of us!

One of the best recent marketing books 5 by .. Barry Parker (Pocatello, Idaho, USA)
This is one of the best books around on marketing your book on the internet. It presents all of the latest techniques in considerable detail, including information on the effectiveness of web pages, blogs, virtual book events, and the importance of the right keywords. The author has developed the concept of a virtual book tour, and explains it in the book. She also discusses press releases, podcasting, online syndication (ezine articles) and email newsletters.
The book is up-to-date and there's no doubt about her expertise in the area. She has written several books on the subject and runs an online marketing company. She also puts out an excellent newletter about marketing your book.
The information on building a website is detailed and particularly good and would be of tremendous value to anyone considering a website.
For anyone self-publishing a book, or getting published by traditional publishers, this book would be invaluable. It contains information that is difficult to find in other books, and it is very up-to-date. Highly recommended.

For the Perfect Mixture of Inspiration and Practical How-to Information 5 by .. W. Terry Whalin (Scottsdale, Arizona)
How can you level the playing field for your book to get any attention in the book market? The answer is through the Internet and more than half of the books are sold outside of the bookstore. Great quotations are highlighted throughout the book for inspiration like "Eight-seven percent of blog readers are book buyers." (Page 95)

Penny Sansevieri covers the gamut of Internet marketing tools like websites, keywords, search engines, e-commerce blogs, podcasts, Internet Press Releases, virtual book events, autoresponders, email newsletters, Ebooks and cultivating your relationship with Amazon. Each chapter is loaded with ready-to-apply URLs and insight. She writes with experience and authority about a topic where she is intimately familiar.

In fact, Sansevieri lays out her goal on page 169 saying, "I want RED HOT INTERNET PUBLICITY to be different. I want you to put down this book with not only a mountain of inspiration, but a plan as well. Book marketing isn't an easy task. It takes time, effort, and lots of sweat equity and most of all, it takes a plan."

Get this book--and let the planning (and success) for your Internet marketing of your book begin.

About the Book --- Do you want to sell more books? BOOK MARKETING DEMYSTIFIED is the first book ever to thoroughly explain the rather bizarre intricacies of book selling and marketing, while providing an easy-to-follow template for deciding WHICH promotional tactics are best for you, your resources and your situation. The author is Bruce Batchelor, inventor of print-on-demand publishing and publisher to thousands of authors from more than 100 countries.

This book is based on 10 months of interviews with industry insiders and bestselling indie (self-publishing) authors who have used iUniverse, Xlibris, Spire, Trafford, Lulu and other services. Learn how some have sold up to one million copies. Each author reveals the hits and misses of book marketing where innovation and clever choices bring best results and satisfaction.

In 1995, BRUCE BATCHELOR rocked the publishing industry when he invented print-on-demand (POD) publishing and triggered a landslide of new books from every country in the world. Since then, more than 100,000 writers have seized the opportunity to be published, and the rate is accelerating. In 2007, an estimated 30,000 new authors will use POD services such as AuthorHouse, BookSurge, iUniverse, Lulu, Spire, Trafford and Xlibris. As a next step, Bruce has turned his attention to solving the rest of the puzzle: how all those self-publishing ("indie") authors can be successful in SELLING their books in cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly ways.

Bruce was CEO of Trafford Publishing for 11 years, and is now owner/publisher at Agio Publishing House in Victoria, BC, Canada. A bestselling author and management consultant, Bruce speaks at writers conferences and universities about future trends and how to book marketing can be demystified.

Like Manna From Heaven 5 by .. Keith O. Johnson (New York NY)
My title says it best. Twenty-four hours with this book was like Manna from Heaven! It answered so many of my questions, yet managed to raise (and answer) questions that I didn't know to ask. Best of all, not only does the author advocate the POD-life, he lives it. Thanks to his insights and my additional research on the topic, my company will also thrive in the POD world! Thanks Bruce!!!

Genuine Help for the Self-Publisher 5 by .. Nelson Winkless ()
This is a morale builder, a practical and encouraging how-to for selling books in an industry completely transformed by digital technology. Most authors set out to be writers, not marketers, and, faced with repeated rejection of their work by a series of publishers, turn only reluctantly to self-publishing. While past guides to self-publishing have dwelt on the art of haggling with bookstore owners over credit for returned books (how much scuffing of the cover is too much, etc), Batchelor reveals surprising new opportunities, and shows how authors take advantage of the changing situation. He notes, for example, that publishers have traditionally rejected manuscripts on the basis that they are written for audiences that are "too narrow." The internet has turned that upside down by making it practical to identify and sell to niche audiences. Thank goodness! This book is stuffed with information about the changing structure of the publishing business, who does what, relative costs, how to figure out what to do, and then how to go about it. This is what the overwhelmed author needs to figure out a rewarding course of action. Good stuff.

Many Good Ideas Here 5 by .. Bradley Fenton (Hollywood, FL)
Author Bruce Batchelor, a publisher and consultant, has done a nice job of distilling his wisdom into 180 pages that spell out how an author can successfully market a book. Using examples from his experience as a publishing industry pioneer and the advice of many top selling authors, Batchelor provides the reader with a smart and sound format on how to market your book.

A resource for authors and independent publishers. 5 by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
It often comes as a shock when newly published authors discover that they must bear most of the burden of marketing their books to the general reading public -- even if they are fortunate enough to be published by one of the major New York publishing firms like Random House, Simon & Schuster or Penguin-Putnam. For self-published authors that marketing responsibility is completely theirs. Most authors are aware of the many 'how to' books that are available to them for the purpose of helping them master the craft of writing, There are also instruction books on turning raw manuscripts into finished books. What is not so obvious is that there are a number of excellent instructional guides for authors on how to market their books after they have been published. One of the best of these marketing manuals is "Book Marketing De-Mystified" by Bruce Batchelor, the man who founded Trafford (Canadian based and one of the larger POD companies servicing North America) and is widely acknowledged as the creator of the print-on-demand (POD) publishing process that has shattered the book publishing monopoly of the traditional publishing firms by allowing anyone to easily become their own publisher. This 167-page compendium of practical advice offers an especially 'user friendly' introduction to the art and science of book marketing because of its conversational style, it comprehensive coverage of book marketing issues, and Bruce Batchelor's unique perspective. It should be noted that the Midwest Book Review is positively cited (page 120) as a resource for authors and independent publishers. "Book Marketing De-Mystified" is especially useful in terms of its discussion of where to sell books, price/value setting, personal sales, paid advertising, sales promotions, publicity and public relations. Simply stated, every author and every small press publisher needs to have a competent marketing plan -- and Bruce Batchelor's "Book Marketing De-Mystified" specifically and effectively addresses that need.

A must for every author 5 by .. Mark Jones (Orinda, CA)
Reading this book is like having the pieces of a puzzle come together! I started my book 18 months ago and after reading BMD I was inspired to finish it and make a marketing plan that reflects my goals and is actually achievable. Whether you are an indie POD author or working with a big name publisher, this book provides a wealth of information that helps anyone understand the publishing world. It is full of specific information, real ideas and examples and it really gets you thinking about how you might market your own book. A must have for any author.

DON'T PAY for Book Marketing: these techniques are free, more effective, and more credible! 4 by .. LOTONtech (www.lotontech.com)
Not only is this book packed full of useful information, but it is also a good read. From the very first pages, it will convince you of why -- and how -- you should harness the power of Amazon for marketing your book(s).

My only slight criticism is that it is very Amazon-centric despite the more generic title. I know that Amazon is the centre of the book-selling universe, but many of the techniques are also relevant to other retail web sites. For example, Barnes & Noble Essentials Lists (which are like Listmania!)

Steve does describe other ways to market and sell your books; e.g. from your web site or blog, via eBay, and so on.

Book marketing can take up a lot of your time, maybe more than the time spent writing the book! So one of the biggest challenges for readers of books about 'book marketing' is figuring out which techniques to focus on. This book has some nice graphs and charts that show the effectiveness of techniques such as 'recommendations'.

One thing for sure: you shouldn't waste your time on paid-for advertising when these free techniques are more effective... and more credible.

"Plug Your Book" is a practical, insightful guide to promoting a self-published (or even a trade-published) book in the Internet age, with an emphasis on Amazon.com and other e-tailers and e-strategies along with some traditional approaches. It's clearly written, well-organized, and useful. A good value for an author looking to optimize sales.

If only I'd found Steve Weber's book last year! What a wealth of information for a first time writer. Writing a book is daunting - takes forever, yes? Then finding a publisher is almost impossible, right? - but once that happens, and amazingly it did for me, I was like a a deer-in-headlights about the marketing and publicity. But now that I've found Steve and his book, I think I'm in love. He charts out what needs to be done and makes seem so easy. Thank you so much!

Fantastic Book 5 by .. Mitch Paioff (Littleton, CO)
I recently finished writing my first book in nearly 20 years and was looking for information about selling it online. I bought Plug Your Book! by Steve Weber and I'm glad I did. I really had no idea just how drastically the book publishing industry has changed since the 1980's.

One strategy that I started using as a result of reading this book is writing book reviews on Amazon.com (hence this one). I had never written a book review in my life until I read Weber's book. Now I write them all the time.

This has been one of those rare buying experiences for me - the product I bought actually exceeded my expectations - by a long shot. This book is packed with useful information for authors and publishers. I really don't think you can get this kind of information anywhere else.

I highly recommend Plug Your Book!

I found that the book had some very important and valuable information, giving both pros and cons of different aspects of online marketing...in the rapidly changing field of book publishing, this book is a must read. If you don't use all of the book's suggestions, (I ended up using a totally different web host than those originally suggested in the book because it seemed much more user-friendly to my neophyte sensibilities), it will certainly get you pointed in the right direction. Thanks a bunch to author Steve Weber for laying it all out!!!

One of the most important books on Literary PR - EVER!! 5 by .. Dusty White (Currently visiting your planet on a tourist visa)
    Wow.

    Wait... let me rephrase that.

WOW!! Forget every other review I have ever given. With all due respect to such classics as "Jump Start You book Sales" and "1,001 Ways to Market Your Book" this book opened my eyes to the other side of the media - and how to get there. I have read and reread everything from "How to Sell You book on Amazon" to "Publicize You Book" (and hundreds of other texts), but this one book stands out head and shoulders as a MUST READ if you ever want to sell ANY books. Written TO the author or public relations specialist (seasoned or student), this book covers in depth print, broadcast, local, regional, and national media like no other book on the subject. Read all of the books I listed above - and read anything By Rick Frishman, but make sure you always have THIS BOOK within arms' reach.

Jodee knows her stuff and she tells all. In contrast to the wonderful texts above, what I gleaned from these pages was HOW TO plan out a campaign (not just a collection of nifty ideas - which are also useful in their own right). Jodee explains the inner workings of every aspect of the media, and how to approach a television producer versus a radio producer or news paper editor, and why. Moreover she gives example after example of how to write a grreat press release, cover letter, question and topic sheets, but her greatest accomplishment is her intensive work on fiction.

NO OTHER BOOK I have read comes close to covering "How To" promote fiction like this one does. I have spoken to and emailed scores of well known and respected professionals who shy away from fiction, but Jodee tackles it head on and tells you as an author or publicity specialist exactly how to research, locate, and exploit the right angles to make the media frenzy for your book. "Where is the hook?" is the greatest bane of anyone who attempts to publicize a novel. "Why should anyone care that you wrote a story?" This book is the first (and currently ONLY) I have found to address these two nefarious questions. This book changed my life. Most highly recommended.

This book is exhausting 5 by .. Brent Sampson (Denver, Colorado)
Some books leave you hungry for more. Others leave you satisfied and content. And still others leave you literally exhausted, like consuming a Thanksgiving dinner. The Complete Guide to Book Publicity falls into the third category. When you are done consuming this wealth of information, go through and read it again, this time compiling a "to do" list. Every page will be tattered and worn with ear-marks, highlights, and scribbled notes.

Reading this book is like its own productivity test. Some may find absorbing it all very taxing, much less acting upon 10% of it. But for those who do both (read it AND act upon it), this book cannot help but improve your book publicity tactics. - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified

The book had a few good ideas, but it was mostly overwhelming and I felt like the author tended to fan their own ego a lot.

Jodee's book is incredible. So incredible I ran out of highlighters because I was highlighting so much critical information in it.

Jodee has been there and done that and it is clear from all my research that if this isn't the best book on the market it is in the top two. Way to go Jodee and thank you.

Short, Sweet, and Logical 5 by .. Sally Atman (Redondo Beach, CA United States)
This is a short book -- I first read it in an hour. And the information isn't terribly ingenious -- just logical. But it's the best book I've found on the subject because it's easy to refer to, makes perfect sense, and does allow me to stick to my minimal budget.

Good solid information with no wasted words or outrageous ideas.

Fantastic Instructional Book 5 by .. Darin W. Godby (Waco, KY)
Kathryn has done a beautiful job giving a detailed way of promoting your book without investing a ton of finances. She starts at the beginning of doing your background work to the end of checking your checklist and checking it twice. There is alot of meat and insightful material in between the two that will give any author fantastic insight of how to promote your material without spending a bundle.
Thanks Kathryn for writing from your knowledge, experiences and research to help others move along quicker to get their material promoted and out into readers hands.

Great book for navigating your way on Amazon 5 by .. Ken and Norah Fritz (West Richland, WA USA)
This book has really opened my eyes on how one can market on Amazon. It's a great community for both the buyer and seller. The book's main focus is how to expose merchandise to potential buyers. The book has information on: writing an author biography, the usefulness of book reviews, author connect, the power of blogging, and creating lists on listomania. If these words are teasers, then read the book. Brent explains how Amazon is set up and how you can use it's infrastructure to accelerate book sales. It requires work but can all be done at from the comforts of home. Amazon is a little difficult to navigate but Brent Sampson's book is the most useful chart to insure your books sales won't hit a rock. Must-Have for Anyone Selling on Amazon 5 by .. Jaimey Grant (Michigan)
This book is an invaluable tool for authors wanting some inside information on how the Amazon system works. Increased sales start with increased exposure and increasing your book's exposure on Amazon can be tricky. With tips and guidelines covering everything that was available at the time of publication--2007; some things have obviously changed--this book can help any author increase exposure of their print-on-demand or self-published work.

Brent Sampson has an easy-to-read, witty writing style that is refreshing in what basically amounts to a "self-help" book. He uses a simple ranking method to rate each tip he gives, 1 star=can be expensive & not recommended - 5 stars=inexpensive & highly recommended. He includes diagrams and figures and explains in simple detail each aspect of Amazon from the importance of each section on the Book Detail Page to the value of So You'd Like to...Guides. By implementing only a few of his suggestions, I have seen a marked increase in exposure to my own books (Betrayal, Heartless, Spellbound, & Redemption), as well as my profile page. I'm truly impressed!

Thank you, Mr. Sampson! 5 by .. Joseph L. D'Agostino (Hershey, PA)
The most beneficial tactic that I was inspired to incorporate into my publishing and marketing process was one that Mr. Sampson subliminally suggests pretty much throughout the whole book: Just do it!

Obviously, anyone who purchases this book is one who has a book that he or she wishes to publish. As such, that writer will more than likely be a newcomer to publishing, and perhaps be geared toward the "print-on-demand" method, as I was. Well, that's perfectly acceptable, and there is no dishonor in that. Your work will speak for itself; if it is worthy, if will merit acceptance.

Regarding the techniques and applicability of those techniques to the ever-evolving Amazon site, the new publisher simply needs to be on his or her toes and be flexible (for example, "Search Inside/Look Inside"). Being sharp and attentive, however, is expected of anyone who wishes to self-publish and self-market. Mr. Sampson, in his energetic way, prompts that approach. For me, this book was very informative, and it was a definite confidence booster.

For all authors, not only Print on Demand Self-Publishers 4 by .. LOTONtech (www.lotontech.com)
I stumbled upon the techniques described in this book myself, before reading the book. Contrary to what some reviewers have said, the techniques DO work -- as the sales rank of this book shows -- if only because "any publicity is good publicity".

Yes, in an ideal world, readers would inadvertently market your books via their Listmania lists, reviews, and so on; but you need to give the process a kick-start yourself as the author / publisher. Some readers might be put off by your self-promotion, but they would never have found your book in the first place without your own marketing efforts.

I think the techniques are legitimate, and not SPAM, providing you: DON'T review books you haven't read, DON'T include your book in Listmania lists of totally unrelated books, and DON'T engage in Sock Puppetry (pretending to be someone else).

    As for the book itself:

The margins are wide and there are fewer words per page than most books. I wish I'd thought of that, as a way of increasing my page counts. The information is presented clearly, as you can see from the 'customer images' (which is another good marketing technique, and a nice touch).

Since it focuses on Amazon, this book is perhaps most relevant for authors who are self-publishing using CreateSpace -- because CreateSpace lists your books only on Amazon.com. Authors who have wider distribution (e.g. using Lulu) can think about how the same techniques apply to other retailers like Barnes and Noble. B&N have Essentials Lists, for example.

And now to explain the title of my review:

As Dan Poynter and others have noted in their books: even if you publish your book via a traditional publisher, YOU the author need to market your own book -- perhaps using these techniques. Unless you are already famous, most mainstream publishers will not market your book effectively. I know, because I've been there.

And now, my review would not be complete without:

This book is different in that it primarily focuses on promoting your book with audio and video, such as producing CD or DVD publicity video pod casts. One good piece of advice offered - follow the money and the markets used by self-published book authors that are successful in marketing their wares. Excellent appendices.
