- fiction
- a concluding chapter on how to write reviews that are both descriptive and analytical
From Cover To Cover is an invaluable resource for all professionals who wish to write book evaluations that go beyond a simple personal response. This definitive guide to reviewing children’s books makes it effortless for parents, teachers, librarians, children’s literature students and general readers who are interested in becoming children’s book reviewers to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a children’s book. An authoritative reviewer in her own right, Kathleen Horning provides practical guidelines for reading critically, evaluating an initial response, answering questions raised during the first reading, putting a response into words, balancing description with criticism, and writing reviews for a particular audience. Customer reviews A better subtitle would be understanding children's books by .. Ingrid Masak Mida (Toronto, Ontario Canada) I get paid for writing reviews of children's books. Most of the books that I'm asked to review are art instruction books or picture books because I also am a freelance artist. I thought that I should read this book to make sure that I hadn't missed anything. However, the title is misleading. It is not really a book about "Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books". A better title would be understanding children's books. Only the last chapter in the book deals with reviewing children's books and that is the shortest chapter. Most of the book is comprised of a comprehensive overview of the different categories of children's books (non-fiction, poetry, picture, easy readers, transitional and fiction). If I had the opportunity to browse through this book in a regular bookstore, it would have stayed on the shelf.
Good book, a bit overstated by .. Dave Millman (San Jose, CA USA) First let me say that this is a good book, I am glad that I purchased it. It codifies many of the characteristics of a quality children's book, and helps writers and reviewers exercise better critical judgment.
However, the author sometimes "puts a bit too fine a point on it," as a Brit might say. There is a section on the layout of early readers and transitional books which describes a specific target number of words per line, lines per page, text size, etc. I found this section quite helpful overall, and I specified changes to our style guide after reading it. But as useful as this material is, I felt the author's attempt to distinguish numbers of words per line between level 1, level 2 and level 3 early reader books was taking the process a bit too far.
Overall, this is a minor issue. As other reviewers have mentioned, writers will find value in the detailed descriptions of how children learn to read, how they react to themes, styles and plots (and how to recognize weakness in each), and how to target different age groups. Indeed, this is the only book I have found with detailed and usable information on these points.
Summary: Buy it if you are a creator or reviewer of children's books.
All right for a textbook by .. Sarah A. Curry (Columbia, SC) The book isn't really all that interesting. Some of the good aspects are that the print is big, and it is easy reading. You can knock a chapter or two out of the way in an hour easily.
Good tool for writers, too by .. () This book is should be an essential for anyone writing for children. Horning covers all the genres, offering insight into pacing, character and plot. She better defines what makes a picture book, an early reader, a chapter book, a mid-grade and a young adult -- definitions that are often murky in writing books. Although this book may have been intended for librarians and others in the book industry, I recommend it highly for anyone contemplating writing for children.

Envision handmade books to hold your writings, poems, photos, and keepsakes. More than 170 photos to inspire, and hundreds of illustrations to guide readers through the basics of an almost infinite variety of imaginative styles. Customer reviews I will never buy anything else from this seller by .. Maria A. Perez () I still haven't received this book yet. I've tried to contact the seller on two occasions and haven't received a reply yet. I will keep it on my not to buy from list.
Brilliant Cut and Fold by .. K A Byrne (London, England) Can't help but agree with all the five star comments that go before me, but my particular rave about this book is the section on making pages of a book from a single piece of paper simply by using the different techniques explained for cutting and folding. Bookmaking origami!
Cover to Cover by .. Gratis (Australia) This book tells in words of one syllable how to make actual books - none of the glossy 'altered-art books' here, this one is the nuts and bolts. It explains all the jargon of book-making in clear and concise language.
She made my mitered corners beautiful by .. Marlene Morris (Maryland) I'm making a book with boards and a leather cover; I used LaPlantz's mitered corners method (Figs. 36 - 39, pp. 39-40), and they look great! I'm sold, she's my mitering guru. Thanks!
Each stitch drawn in sequence by .. Sakuteiki (Grants Pass, OR United States) Detailed instructions accompanied by drawings on the same page of each stitch to be taken to bind a book, stitch varieties, binding paperbacks into custom hardbacks, creating 3 dimensional art work in book form plus invaluable pragmatic advice such as the safe relative distance from hole to edge and hole to hole, depending on size of book and binding type, as well as how many pages becomes too cumbersome to open or view with a particular technique.
Multiple suggestions follow each demonstration for expanding the technique shown, or varying the format to satisfy one's own preferences and prejudices. Ms. LaPlantz specifies infinitesmally small steps which make following the directions exceptionally easy. And she progresses from standard codex (covers and a spine) to remarkably artful constructions all the while being encouraging, enthusiastic and clear. She does not make extensive use of commoditized products other than printer paper for the book text pages, and recommends simple tools for beginning (needle, thread, cardboard, glue, paste, scissors) as well as explaining how to make one's own binding frame from an old hardback book.
Unhappily, her subseqent Art and Craft of Handmade Books was not as well edited as Cover to Cover, as you can see from her website which lists pages of corrections to the printed edition as well as including material edited out which was necessary for clarity, continuity and simplicity of instruction. She even includes bonus materials, photos, techniques not in Art and Craft of Handmade Books.
Cover to Cover is excellent, like having a mentor at one's side with years of experience guiding one's acquisitiion of binding skills.
Highly recommended.

Product Description The Book Babes offer up the best in fiction and non-fiction, suggesting hundreds of good books to suit every mood and stage of a woman's life. A book with personality that recommends the best in fiction and nonfiction, "Between the Covers" suggests hundreds of good books to suit every mood and stage of a woman's life. Here, for the first time, is a book on books based on what women care about most, one that travels from Jane Austen to Zadie Smith, from Mary McCarthy to Mary Higgins Clark, from "The Joy of Cooking" to "The Joy of Sex."In "Between the Covers", the Book Babes put Moby-Dick alongside "A Perfect Storm" in "10 Books That Spell Disaster." Ever wonder how Jane Austen relates to Suze Orman (hint: it's all about money) or how books as different as Mark Haddon's novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and Temple Grandin's "Animals in Translation" address similar issues? From sections such as 'Babes We Love' (Role Models, Real and Imagined) to 'The Babe Inside' (focusing on Body and Soul), 'Family & Friends', 'Love, Sex, and Second Chances', 'Brave New World', and 'Living to Read', the book is organized around women's commitments - to themselves, their friends and family, the larger world - and to their concerns, from health to sex to how to manage their finances. Product Description We all know we're not supposed to judge books by their covers, but the truth is that we do just that nearly every time we walk into a bookstore or pull a book off a tightly packed shelf. It's really not something we should be ashamed about, for it reinforces something we sincerely believe: design matters. At its best, book cover design is an art that transcends the publisher's commercial imperatives to reflect both an author's ideas and contemporary cultural values in a vital, intelligent, and beautiful way. In this groundbreaking and lavishly illustrated history, authors Ned Drew and Paul Sternberger establish American book cover design as a tradition of sophisticated, visual excellence that has put shape to our literary landscape. By Its Cover traces the story of the American book cover from its inception as a means of utilitarian protection for the book to its current status as an elaborately produced form of communication art. It is, at once, the intertwined story of American graphic design and American literature, and features the work of such legendary figures as Rockwell Kent, E. McKnight Kauffer, Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, Rudy deHarak, and Roy Kuhlman along with more recent and contemporary innovators including Push Pin Studios, Chermayeff & Geismar, Karen Goldberg, Chip Kidd, and John Gall. Customer reviews excellent pictorial guide by .. Thomas Conneely () Excellent well illustrated history of Dj design, the text was a bit up itself, but still informative.
Covers: cool and cultural by .. Robin Benson ()
The two authors have written a first class study of the dust jacket and presented it in an elegantly designed paperback, too. From my experience this sort of title is heavy with cover images with lightweight copy or even just captions but here Drew and Sternberger have really researched their subject and produced what might well be the standard book on the subject. The review starts in the thirties from the craft movement oriented designs through the modernism of the forties, fifties and sixties to the post-modern late eighties, nineties and the start of this century. The covers are mostly placed with their relevant text so it is easy to follow the authors' comments about each designer.
I'm old enough to remember seeing plenty of these sixties covers in bookshops (my favorites were Rudy De Harak, Roy Kuhlman, Paul Bacon and the brilliant Herb Lubalin and considering how influential he was I'm surprised he only gets one cover) and I certainly appreciated the modernist creativity of the past decades rather than contemporary market-driven covers whose design owes so much to the liberating effect of computer technology.
As well as an interesting read the book is elegantly designed (though with perhaps just a bit too much white space for my taste) with the covers presented as cutouts with a subtle drop-shadow. Nicely several of the older titles are second-hand copies that betray well read handling. A minor annoyance is the footnote numbers printed in tiny type and in blue, nearly impossible to read in a domestic lighting environment. Actually all the notes in the back could easily have been placed on the relevant pages, there is that much white space around.
The perfect complement to 'By its Cover' is 'Jackets Required' (ISBN 0811803961) by Steven Heller and Seymour Chwast, hundreds of covers presented in a handsome looking large size paperback. Both books celebrate some wonderful dust jacket creativity.

McGee (Beautiful Idaho, United States) This is one of my all time favorite sewing books and it DOES live up to it's name. Fast, fun and EASY! I made two covers within the first week of getting the book.
The instructions are detailed, concise and easily understood, even by me and I'm a self-taught, novice.
Best things about this book are that the instructions allow you to cover ANY book you want from checkbooks, journals to cookbooks, paperbacks, EVERYTHING. I absolutely LOVE this book! Also, for other "hoarders" like me, who can't bear to get rid of the bigger scraps of fabric I have left from other projects, not to worry! You can easily incorporate those scraps into fabulous designs! If I sound like I'm gushing, I AM! I can see myself using this book for years and years to come without getting tired of it.
The book details the supplies needed to get started but I found I already had almost all of them including a mat and rotary cutter, glue gun, etc.
The only downside and it's not much of one is that the covers are finished using a satin stitch on the edges which can be a bit tedious but it looks SO GREAT when you're done. I even added some metal charms I had floating around in my button box.
The sky's the limit with this book and I found it really stimulated my creativity. This one's a keeper!

Product Description A classy and fashionable Bible cover that will always be in style. Customer reviews I REALLY like this bible cover by .. B. M. Moreno (Manila,Philippines) I just received my bible cover yesterday and i live all the way in the Philippines. I received it in very good condition and my Spirit Filled Life Bible fits perfectly. The only thing is, i had hoped it had some pockets for my notebook and extra highlighters but otherwise i find the faux leather bible cover rather pretty and functional.
Very Nice Bible Cover by .. Hello Kelly (Detroit, MI, USA) I got this Bible cover for my birthday and I really like it. It is very sturdy and seems to be very durable. It can hold a large Bible with some room to spare. It does look to be all fabric in the picture but really it is stiff faux leather. The only think I would change would be to put pockets on the outside. Other than that I really love it!!
Cute Bible Cover by .. Erin Jackson (Montgomery, AL USA) I ordered this and I really like the look of it. It's a little shinier than it seemed in the picture, but still looks good. I was kind of worried because the description doesn't have a measurement for the best size of Bible, but it fits mine. The tag says fits most standard size Bibles and books up to 6 5/8" x 9 1/2", in case you need to know.
