Customer reviews Solid Work by .. C. Mixon (Nashville, TN) I first bought this Bible for a biblical literature class and although I thought it was bulky to carry around, the notes are the best I have seen other than Harper Collins study notes. The are accessible for Bible scholars who are at beginning and advanced levels. I have since gifted this NRSV version to family and friends who are interested in studying the Bible in depth.
If you are looking for a great study Bible, but not exactly the best "on-the-go" size then I would strongly recommend this Bible to you.
GREAT BIBLE RESOURCE by .. Daniel Bargar (Santa Rosa, Ca.) When you wish to learn the biblical meaning of strange passages this is the book for you.
Well Organized by .. H TERESA K () The information is concisely presented without going into a lot of detail. However there is certainly depth. Good cross-referencing is a key factor in my decision to recommending this great study bible volume.
A very liberal and PC study Bible by .. A Fan (VA) The Bible commentaries are written from a decidedly liberal theological perspective. It is obvious that the authors believe the Bible is just a product of ancient myths and storytelling. They disbelieve miracles and explain away prophecy by assigning late dates for the books. Their notes are not balanced and really does not present opposing points of view or evidence to the contrary. More a work of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish propaganda than a balanced, scholarly work. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it. Instead, I would recommend the NIV Study Bible or NKJV Study Bible.
Great for students by .. Meg (Pasadena, CA) I bought this book when I signed up for a class on the Bible as literature, and now I'm really glad I have a copy. The notes are outstanding, as are the overview sections of each book and the history. I like the binding, also - it always sits just right when you open it to a page.

Product Description Parents and kids alike are instantly drawn to the Read With Me Bible for its outstanding, action-filled artwork by Dennis Jones. Mom and Dad love the way their kids respond to the bold, humorous depictions of Bible characters, and easy-to-understand stories. And now this beloved Bible storybook for 4-to-8-year-olds is updated, with even more artwork, a new typeface, and a fresh, eye-catching cover. Like the original, the new version features separate Old Testament and New Testament sections and contains 106 Bible stories based on the New International Reader's Version-(NIrV-"The NIV for Kids!"). Reading to young children helps foster strong emotional bonds. Spending time together discussing the stories and interacting with the pictures also helps kids internalize the Word of God. Younger children will enjoy studying the pictures and watching the words as parents read them; early readers may want to read the stories on their own. Christian parents are always in the market for creatively designed, value-priced Bible storybooks for young children. They want a sound biblical message, but they want it packaged in a novel, state-of-the-art way. The Read With Me Bible has a proven track record of strong popularity with consumers and the updated version promises to build on this success. Customer reviews great literature by .. LINDA D. GROUT (cheyenne, wy USA) I bought this Bible to have on hand when my grandkids come to visit. They love it and the pictures. Good product
Beautiful illustrations, good stories by .. Meg (Twin Cities, MN) We bought this Bible simply because of its illustrations. They are so bright and colorful and sometimes downright hilarious. The stories are simple and DO sometimes skip certain details you'll find in Bibles for older kids or adults, but we think it's very age appropriate.
Great preschool Bible - cheap cover tho... by .. cslipp (texas) I got this Bible for our son when he was 3 1/2. He has loved the illustrations and we love the text which is more Scripture than paraphrase. We read it together daily first thing when he wakes up - it wasn't more than a month before his bedtime prayers started changing from "Thank you God for the horseys and donkeys amen" to "Thank you God for Jesus dying on the cross for us and for the horseys and donkeys amen." It is not unusual for him to initiate it in the morning and sometimes it is also his nighttime book of choice. A year later I would love to expose him to additional parts of the Bible since we have read these all thru multiple times but haven't yet found a larger combination of entertaining illustrations AND Scripture. Downside - the binding began losing pages early on - most of the NT pages are now loose. But still highly recommend it!
kids bible by .. vic1089 (Caneadea, NY) This is a great bible for young kids. My oldest grandson(2 1/2) sits on his bed and looks at the pictures all the time. When he is old enough to read it will be a great starter bible. I purchased 3 more for my other grand kids.
excellent by .. A. Rothfos () Excellent first Bible for little ones. It is easily understood by children of all ages, with entertaining pictures for children to look at when they hear the stories. This Bible is a perfect baptism or baby gift.

Product Description The New Oxford Annotated Bible is the most widely used study Bible in schools, colleges, seminaries, and universities across the nation, meeting the needs of students of all faiths. An indispensible tool for people who desire a modern translation combined with outstanding study helps. Customer reviews Wonderful study Bible by .. Ingrid R. Briles (Charleston, WV) I bought this Bible the first time through my church as part of a year long Bible Study group. Years later after wearing it out, I bought the Leather Expanded Third Edition. I write historical fiction and am very anxious to be accurate. I use this Bible as a reference tool as well as for personal study. I like the beginnings of each book and how they introduce the author, the time, and often the political climate when a specific book was written. I strongly recommend this version of the Holy Scriptures.
Presents a liberal perspective on the Bible by .. A Fan (VA) The Bible commentaries included here are written from a generally liberal theological perspective. The authors discount traditional teachings regarding how the Bible originated and was preserved in favor of more modern theories, which include late dating of the books and questionable authorship. This tends to undermine the authority and credibility of the Bible.
If you wish to explore liberal Christian theology, you may appreciate this study Bible. Otherwise, I would recommend you purchase the NIV Study Bible or the NKJV Study Bible.
Interesting and Hard-to-Find Content by .. J. Kempe () This Bible has a lot of content that is a little hard to come across, and to me, that is what makes it so interesting and worthwhile. First of all, the "Revised Standard Version" has been, for the most part, abandoned in favor of the newer "New Revised Standard Version." However, this older version definitely has its own merits. As I understand it, it is the only version of the Bible to be accepted for personal and liturgical use by both the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Though I am part of neither of these faith traditions, it is interesting to know that you are referencing a bible that ALL Christians can respect, no matter what faith tradition they associate themselves with. It also contains the Apocrypha, so it has all the books that are canonical, even those that are controversial in some branches of Christianity. Nice print, good introduction to every book in the Bible, and solid, beautiful binding. Great Bible.
Excellent Bible for All by .. Kristy Sherrod (Henderson, TN USA) This is a review for the Leather Bound version. I purchased this Bible when I became Catholic because I wanted a nice leather RSV Bible. I am so glad that I purchased this one. It is great and I have found nothing so far that contradicts Catholic teaching in the notes. I use it all the time, plus I use the "notes" pages to write down Catholic prayers and such so that I will always have them with me. The only translation problem is in Luke 1:28 where Gabriel is speaking to Mary and says "Hail, O favored one!" instead of "Hail, Full of Grace!" which is the more accurate translation (and that is in the RSV-CE), but no biggie, I just made an asterisk and put that at the bottom of the page. The only other thing I would change is that if they are not going to be in there proper place within the OT, I would rather the Deuterocanical books be in the center of the Bible rather than at the end. Other than that it is a great Bible! I would recommend it to anyone, Catholic or Protestant!!!
Excellent Study Bible - Excellent Translation by .. a Seeker (Florida, USA) The New Oxford Annotated Bible (with the Apocrypha) is my favorite translation coupled with the highest quality study notes of any of the study bibles I am familiar with. I have more than fifty bibles and this is the one I take with me out of town.

Complete bible by .. April D. Turner (Memphis, TN) I bought this Bible for my EFM class. It was recommended and I'm glad it was. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it's so well annotated that sometimes it is distracting. It's best to read the chapters and verses first then the notes second.

I have enjoyed reading the information on each book of the Bible as well as the additional information on each verse including interpretation and/or background of many of the words within the verses. Product Description One of the World's Foremost Bible Experts Offers a Groundbreaking Presentation of the Five Books of Moses In The Bible with Sources Revealed, Richard Elliott Friedman offers a new, visual presentation of the Five Books of Moses -- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy -- unlocking the complex and fascinating tapestry of their origins. Different colors and type styles allow readers to easily identify each of the distinct sources, showcasing Friedman's highly acclaimed and dynamic translation. Customer reviews Amazing! by .. Suzanne Thompson (Kentucky) I am taking a theology class studying the Old Testament. I use 2 Torahs and 3 Bibles (NE and NRSV). Someone said in class that this book helped her make sense of what the redactors had done. It is so very helpful; you can read one authors writing, skipping over other's and it makes so much easier. Read the entire text for the ideas, one author at a time for continuity.
If you are studying the first 5 books of the Bible, this book is an invaluable tool. I would have given it 5 stars, but I think additional footnotes would have made it perfect.
A good picture book! by .. Paul J. Evans () When most talk about the JEDP theory, they break it up and explain how it may be this or that person. This book stand's out because it does not just tell you, it shows you. He takes the first five books of the bible and shows where J is written in contrast to E and P ect. How the first five books are written are kept intact, he uses various colors to show where J is, another color to show E, and another color to show P and one to show D. So you can see how the theory actually looks like.
If you are interested in this theory, this is a book to have. So when you read in another book that J is stated in this passage, you can turn to this book and verify it. You no longer have to wonder how they come up with it and try to visualize it in your own bible, Friedman did it for you. This alone is worth the price of the book, and therefore, needs to be on every shelf of every biblical student.
A Must Have for any Biblical Scholar by .. Noah I. Bassel (New Haven, CT) As someone who has made a serious hobby out of academic biblical study, I cannot recommend this book enough. Friedman's idea of actually showing the ways in which scholars differentiate between the different textual strata of the what we have come to call the Pentateuch or the Torah (rather than describe such source critical phenomena in writing) is such a good one that I am compelled to wonder why nobody had ever thought of doing this before. Additionally, the author's footnotes, while they could be more longer and more numerous, are quite helpful, as is his bibliography. Even as my interests in biblical scholarship have shifted over time, this is a book that I find myself coming back to again, and again and again.
No matter what, however, a potential reader should be aware of these two minor, potential drawbacks:
1. The book is only available in English. I realize that for a lot of Americans, that's not at all a drawback, but for those of us who like to study our source criticism in the original, the only solution is to keep this book in one hand, and a Hebrew version in the other. Cumbersome, perhaps, but always worth the effort.
2. Keep in mind that Friedman's ideas of how to divide up the text between the various sources are not universally accepted. No, I am not going to offer the fundamentalist response to biblical criticism, and say that the discipline is worthless, and scholars now know better to practice it. Rather, my point is that not all scholars agree with Friedman's conclusions on, say, where to draw the dividing line between the various textual sources of the story of Balaam and Balak in Numbers, or the where the border is between the Holiness Code and other P material in the book of Leviticus (a point that the author readily acknowledges). Thus, instead of offering any kind of universal, scholarly consensus (something that rarely exists in a humanistic discipline, anyway), this book propounds the opinions of one highly respected and formidable scholar.
The Best of the 19th Century... by .. Lost in Tallahassee () Friedman's text is an excellent review, with slight expansion, of Wellhausen's "Prolegomena." Friedman's fault lies in his complete disregard for a century of scholarship that has significantly undermined the validity of the Documentary Hypothesis.
Helps you better understand the Hebrew Scriptures by .. Joan K. Snipes (Shepherdstown, WV) The Bible with Sources Revealed: A New View into the Five Books of Moses by Richard Elliott Friedman is a very helpful book for students of the Bible.
Friedman's opening two chapters are amazingly succinct. In a very few pages, Friedman lays out an incredibly compelling case for what is known as the Documentary Hypothesis. This is the widely accepted theory that the first five books of the Bible are a compilation of four main documents, known by the letters J, E, P, and D, which were woven together by later editors known as Redactors.
After the introductory material, the book is a translation of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
In his chapter, "Collection of Evidence," Friedman catalogs the seven main arguments for accepting the Documentary Hypothesis. They fall into these categories: linguistic, terminology, consistent content, narrative flow, connections with other parts of the Old Testament, relationships among the sources, and convergence of the evidence. I find Friedman's explanation clear and convincing.
What does it matter whether you buy into the idea that sources by J, P, E, and D form the Pentateuch? Because, if you are somewhat familiar with this concept, certain "problems" with the text suddenly become clear as you read the new English translation that follows Friedman's opening chapters. By using two different ink colors (blue and green) and a variety of fonts, average Bible readers like you and me can easily understand various contradictions and redundancies in the text. The four strands are clearly set off, thanks to the wonders of modern technology in printing.
Here's an example of how seeing the sources helps you understand what's going on in the Bible texts. The story of Noah's ark is told in Genesis, chapters 6 through 9. Both J and P originally told the story. The Redactors blended these two accounts. With The Bible with Sources Revealed, I learned that in the P version there is only one pair of each animal, whether pure or impure. See Genesis 6:19-20; 7:8, 9 15. In P, there are no sacrifices until the establishment of the Tabernacle in Exodus 40, so two of each animal is sufficient. However, J specifies seven pairs of pure and one pair of impure (see Genesis 7:2, 3.) This fits with the fact that in the J account, Noah will offer sacrifices at the end of the flood, so he needs more than two of each animal--or else his sacrifice would end a species. Friedman's footnotes clarify such differences throughout the Pentateuch.
Friedman's translation is unique because the text is so clearly marked in terms of sources. You won't be disappointed.

Author : Bob Ekblad Number of Pages : 208 Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press List Price : $19.95 Amazon Price : $15.56 Used Price : $40.19 |
Product Description Both long-time church members and those outside the traditional church can find it difficult to read the Bible. Bob Ekblad encourages the church and the unchurched to read the Bible together, for what scripture has to teach us all. In this compelling book, he reflects on how Christians have often found it difficult to proclaim God’s good news to every realm of society, while those who have needed it most have frequently deemed themselves unworthy due to social circumstances or sinfulness. In Reading the Bible with the Damned, Ekblad demonstrates how to bridge this gap by showing us specific ways to engage people from all walks of life, from the poorest parts of town to inside the prison walls. This book is full of examples of how Scripture changes lives, offering practical suggestions on how to lead discussions on passages from the Old and New Testaments. Customer reviews Reading the Bible with the Damned by .. Philip L. Rugejones (San Marcos, TX United States) This is a fine book that allows us to overhear conversations with those locked out of our presence. Trust is key in his understanding of the life of faith and he reads the bible, attentive to oft overlooked details to combat the reduction the bible into a morality manual, or a book of role models, or a book that demands literal interpretation. At times he neglects elements of the text that would require Christians to live their lives in a distinctive manner, but this may be what allows for the inmates to hear him.
This is the gospel by .. Andy Kaylor (Beaverton, OR United States) The title of this book really sucked me in. I had only a vague idea of what it was about when I ordered it. I thought it had something to do with liberation theology and work with the marginalized. It sounded like an interesting approach.
When I began reading chapter 1, I couldn't help feeling like I had walked into the middle of a conversation. With very little preliminaries, Ekblad starts going through an explanation of how he selects topics for his jail Bible studies and the procedure he goes through in facilitating them. I was left wondering about things like why he was doing this, what he hoped to accomplish, what his underlying theology was, and so on.
Then I got to chapter 2 when he began relating actual experiences he has had with the men in Skagit County Jail and how God has touched their lives through their readings of the Bible. Wow! This stuff is dynamite! Going from chapter 1 to chapter 2 was like going from a lecture on the physics of roller coaster construction to actually riding the roller coaster.
Let me tell you, it wouldn't matter if Bob Ekblad had no writing skill whatsoever (though he actually is a pretty good writer). The stories he has to tell about God stepping into the lives of men living at our society's margins are so powerful, so eye-opening, that they completely shine on their own merits.
Seriously, buy this book. If you're put off by the idea of liberation theology, don't be. He doesn't really put forward a hardcore liberation theology. His main message is the grace of God in Jesus Christ, and in any case this book isn't about theology, it's about rubber-on-the-road practical application of the Gospel in real people's lives. This is great stuff.
New insights with new eyes by .. Mary Nelson (Chicago, IL USA) From one who has much experience in the third world and working with people behind bars comes this sharing of insights from people we don't often hear from. Refreshing and stimulating and opens up one's mind to new understanding of some old passages and themes. Mary Nelson
Excellent! by .. Adam Gonnerman (North America) This book is not only a description of how the author ministers to people on the margins of society, but also an explanation of his philosophy of ministry and provides a radically different perspective on the Bible in general and certain passages in particular. I'm planning to read the book again at a slower rate and look up the passages he reviews with inmates and farm workers.
A Must-read! by .. Jonathan Barrett Lee (Central New York USA) Reading the Bible with the Damned is gripping, even from the title. The book emerges from the work of Bob Ekblad, a jail chaplain and director of Tierra Nueva and the People's Seminary in Burlington, Washington. Ekblad examines the hermeneutical and pedagogical issues that arise from encountering the Christian scriptures with the marginalized, namely inmates and undocumented immigrants. The purpose of the book is to provide a resource for people of faith who endeavor to "bridge the gap" between the mainstream and the marginalized. Ekblad's thesis is that these two realms must learn to read and interpret the Bible together, in order to formulate a fuller and more transformative vision of the Christian faith.
The book begins with an identification of the pitfalls many mainstream readers encounter in their more traditional readings of the Bible, whereby the message of the Bible is made to support the status quo or dominant paradigm. Ekblad encourages his readers to challenge these theological assumptions by reading the Bible with those outside one's own nationality, race, gender, class, or economic status.
The rest of the book focuses on reading specific portions of the Bible in this new light. There are chapters on the Creation narrative, Cain and Abel, the Patriarchal narratives, Exodus, Isaiah, the Psalms, the Gospels, and the Pauline Epistles.
This book is the product of a class taught at the People's Seminary in conjunction with Regent College. I attended this class when it was taught last year and it proved to be the single most transformative experience of my graduate education. I walked into the class with one career plan, and walked out with another.
Bob, through his teaching and friendship, reminded me of things I had long since forgotten about the very nature and purpose of the Christian life. Ambition and achievement must always take a back seat to serving "the least of these" as though they were Christ himself. Real life happens outside in the cold, not inside a classroom. Bob is aware of this and manages to gently lead his students, sometimes literally, outside of their comfort zones, and into labor camps and back alleys.
This book reflects Bob's work, and so I recommend it as strongly as I can. Whether one is clergy or laity, newcomer or veteran of street-level ministry, this book will revolutionize and hone your skills in reading and/or teaching the Bible. It is a book for anyone who has ever wondered whether the Bible has any "good news" for those outside the dominant economic, political, social, and religious structures.

Product Description For the customer who equates reading the Bible to watching grass grow, Playing With Fire shows them how powerful and exciting scripture can be. Walt Russell teaches us how to study different sections of the Bible in ways that change reader's perception of God's word and transforms their lives. This material has been used in Russell's college courses with life-changing results. He gives detailed examples for studying each section of the Bible and helps readers refine their ability to read and interpret it, providing the essential tools for unlocking the meaning of God's Word. This is part of the NavPress Spiritual Formation Line which focuses on bringing radical soul transformation-rather than outward conformity-to the ordinary Christian. Customer reviews This is a MUST READ by .. Susan G. (Los Angeles, CA) The author is a colleague of my husband's. Frankly, I had a bit of an attitude about this book ten years ago after a day long seminar because I was ignorant and felt Russell might be overly confining God. Spring semester 2008 it was my text book for Biblical Interpretation and Spiritual Formation at Biola University. Midway through the book I found myself apologizing to Walt Russell for my previous attitude and utter ignorance and told him how much this book has helped me correctly read, understand and apply the Bible in my life. He received my confession with great amusement and humility. This book will help you understand how we all mis-read and mis-apply scripture in ingnorance. Russell is rock solid in his qualifications & knowledge as a scholar and this is a great book written for the common man. Easy read; IMPORTANT read.
I really enjoy Walt Russell's writing by .. Mike Matlock () After hearing some audio of Dr. Russell, I purchased his book and found it very relative to Bible endeavors. Without criticizing or comparing him to others, I found it very insightful. If you read this Mr. Russell, thanks-Mike
Outstanding Book on Hermeneutics by .. Mark E. Adler () Dr. Russell has served as professor of New Testament at Talbot School of Theology since 1990. Among the courses taught by Dr. Russell is Hermeneutics (the art and science of biblical interpretation). Playing With Fire: How the Bible Ignites Change in Your Soul, exemplifies why Dr. Russell is such a respected professor by his students and fellow faculty members. In a succinct, engaging, and accurate format, he presents crucial methods needed in developing a balanced approach for proper understanding and application of the Bible. This book represents much of the content of his course on hermeneutics, a required course for all seminary students (for good reasons). Carefully interwoven into the fabric of methodology are the aspects of spiritual formation, often neglected in hermeneutics. One will especially profit from chapter 1 and Dr. Russell's explanation of how the western existential worldview "tints our perspective," and also from chapter 4 where he explains the use of Letio Divina (spiritual reading). I have taught both Bible survey and hermeneutics for several years, and it is without hesitation that I recommend Dr. Russell's book. One's Bible reading will be markedly enriched after reading and studying Playing With Fire.

Not awful, but a bit disappointing by .. E. Johnson (El Cajon, CA United States) First, let me say that I read this book and Fee's and Stuart's book "How to Read the Bible for all its Worth" in the same month. My analysis: Although they were written in the same style and utilize similar material, I thought "Playing with Fire" was not quite as clear and not as thought-provoking as "Read the Bible." Truly Dr. Russell is a thinker--I am fully impressed with their Bible program at Biola--and if I had not read "Read the Bible" at the same time, perhaps I would have liked his book more than I did. Russell does utilize some beneficial charts and makes several good points throughout. However, while this book could be beneficial, I hestitate to recommend it when there is a better book on the same subject available to you.
