Product Description

Mind Beyond Death is an indispensable guidebook through the journey of life and death. Using humorous analogies and his profound understanding of the Western mind, Dzogchen Ponlop makes the mysterious Tibetan teachings on the bardos--the intervals between waking and sleep, between life and death, and beyond--completely available to the modern reader. Drawing on a breathtaking range of material, this young, popular teacher shows us how the bardos can be used to conquer death. Working with the bardos means taking hold of life and learning how to live with fearless abandon, and Mind Beyond Death demonstrates that the secret to a good journey through death and beyond lies in how we live. Walking skillfully through the bardos of dream, meditation, and daily life, we then travel deep into the mysterious death intervals and become familiar with their dazzling mindscape. This tour de force gives us the knowledge to transform the greatest obstacle of death into the most powerful opportunity for enlightenment.

A LOT OF INSIGHTFUL NEW INFORMATION 5 by .. Wm Michael Elder (Grand Prairie, TX USA)
I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN I ORDERED THIS BOOK, BUT I'M HAPPY I PURCHASED IT. IT HAS A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION THAT I AM ABSORBING AS I GO ALONG. IT TAKES ME A LOT OF REFLECTION TO ABSORB WHAT IS BEING SAID, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A DIFFICULT OR EASY "READ". THIS IS NOT A READ-IT-ALL-AT ONCE BOOK...IF YOU ARE WILLING TO ENTERTAIN AND PERHAPS ACCEPT THE INFORMATION BEING PRESENTED, IT IS AN INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK.

Understanding Buddhism 4 by .. Napier (hershey pa usa)
Accept that these ideas may not agree with your present beliefs. Explore ideas that preceded Christianity and Islam by millenia. One of the problems many encounter with such publications is that they are written by people who think differently and do not always clarify their differing mental concepts that do not coincide withwestern beliefs.
This book discusses the concept that the mind is indestructible, cycling through the 6 important bardos transition phases of prebirth, birth, living, death transition, and return. This is not a "religion" in that there is no God to bargain with: one is responsible for one's own life circumstances through one's own conduct over several lives, following the principle of the golden rule.
That being said, the author has an outstanding mastery of style and clarity of thought, except in sectiions where jargon words break up the idea flow, like rapids in a smooth stream. You may master this hurdle or choose to abandon the book, disappointed.

A True Wish Fulfilling Gem 5 by .. Edwin Conrad ()
As I've grown older I have truly relished the eruption of Tibetan wisdom literature and commentaries "coming online", as it were. Having cut my teeth on D.T. Zusuki and Herbert Guenther, the appearance of Thurman, Garfield, and now Ponlop Ripoche has further deepened and matured my appreciation of the compassion that comes out of life to help us. Ripoche's work is, for me, a true mile/gem/stone. It is a truly reflective work that I can only compare, in my own meditative experience, to reading St. Agustine's Confession. There is genius in the economy of words, only outshined by their precision and communicative power. I have been graced with such great teachers who awakened and deepened my "reflective ear". As I read Ripoche's work each word, phrase and paragraph echos with insight inspiring power, congealing long threads of thought both Western and Eastern. I do apologize if this review seems like a fawning paean. What I wishing to convey is the deep meaning that is redolent within this work, and the opportunity for you, also, to take a plunge (if you already haven't). It is truly a unique work of great power and relevance. It is the best work to emerge, to date, for our Western lebenswelt that deals with the experience of death and beyond -- and by that our life, right now.

We Need to Know About This 5 by .. Andrew Karr (Halifax, NS Canada)
Death is something we need to know about since we will all be meeting it face to face. Just clinching our teeth and hoping for the best is not a reasonable strategy. Ponlop Rinpoche lays out one that is, with precision and in detail. This book contains amazingly profound teachings for living and dying, and does it in a tone that is both light and serious.

Reading this book is a must!

Mind blowing teachings -- are you ready? 5 by .. Ceci Miller ()
This book called to me, as did a book discussion group at Nalanda West in Seattle. The result of both is profound gratitude. Relatively new to Buddhist studies, I wasn't sure I was ready for these apparently advanced teachings on working with the mind after death. It does seem that nothing has been withheld here, and yet the book doesn't overwhelm. The kind humor of the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche pulls me along gently, so that even advanced practices are approachable. Gentle teacher, great wisdom. What more could one ask?

There and back 4 by .. Keirj (Buffalo Grove, IL USA)
I read this boook as did my entire family because of what happened to me.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that the accounts in this book are very solid.

I died of an overdose back now almost 20 years ago when I was in my early twenties. My heart stopped 3 separate times and then I was in a coma for about 22 hours. I saw vividly the men working on me while I was "out". Like watching a movie. I saw from above while they used the defibrillator paddles to shock me back to life. I even recognized a high-school friend that had become a paramedic helping at one point. I hadn't seen him in years. I verified later that he had become a paramedic and was involved in the procedures.

I'm not what some referred to as a "fundamentalist".

I could tell you much much more. If you are at all interested please feel free to contact me via a post.

If this cardiologist doesn't convince you, will anyone? 5 by .. Trish (USA)
I read this book years ago. The concept of an afterlife, but especially of hell, was not something I had taken very seriously. It was obvious, to me anyway, that this doctor was totally serious about what he had seen and researched. I found him more credible, for example, than Dr. Moody, though his book was very good as a door opener to nde discussions and research.

Rawlings seems sincere 5 by .. K. S. Dennis (Lehighton, PA USA)
I was impressed with this book because Dr. Rawlings seems so sincere in what he says. Based on what I found online after reading the book, Dr. Rawlings is very active in advocating the message presented in the book. I took Rawlings' accounts of near-death experiences to be hopeful signs in some cases and warnings in others. This book gave me a lot to think about and led me to read other books on the topic and related topics. I highly recommend this short book.

DON'T KNOCK IT 2 by .. J STONE (USA)
THIS BOOK CAUSES PEOPLE TO THINK ABOUT OUR LIFE. THIS BOOK AS I READ IT DOES NOT CAUSE PEOPLE TO TURN TO GOD OUT OF FEAR. THERE ARE ALOT OF ATHEIST OUT THERE READING THIS BOOK WHY? BECAUSE DEEP DOWN WHEN THEY'RE ALONE IN THEIR ROOM THINKING, "WHAT IF THEY'RE RIGHT AND I'M WRONG? LOOK ARE THERE CRAZY PEOPLE THAT SAY THEY DIED AND WALKED WITH JESUS? YES THERE IS. BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THESE PEOPLE WERE LYING. I DON'T READ BOOKS LIKE THIS TO INCREASE MY FAITH,I READ BOOKS LIKE THIS TO REVIEW THEM. IF I NEED TO INCREASE MY FAITH I READ GOD'S WORD. NOT MANS WORD. I BET THE ATHEIST ARE LOVING THIS REVIEW. DO I BELIEVE IN GOD? YES, DO I HAVE PROOF THAT GOD EXISTS? I HAVE NO MORE PROOF THAT HE EXISTS, THAN YOU HAVE THAT HE DOESN'T. WHAT I DO HAVE IS MY BIBLE (YOUR BIBLE?) YES MY BIBLE, THE SAME BIBLE THAT SCIENTISTS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DISPROVE AND HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT BECAUSE GODS WORDS ARE NOT JUST WRITTEN IN BLACK AND WHITE HIS WORDS ARE SPIRITUAL. SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY SCIENCE IS HOW A MAN COULD BE CHANGED WITH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, THAT'S WHY THE BIBLE HAS BEEN A STUMBLING BLOCK TO THE UNBELIEVERS. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE IN GOD, IF THEY ARE WILLING TO CHANGE THEIR SELFISH LIFE STYLES, I KNOW PEOPLE THAT BELIEVE THAT HELL EXISTS, BUT HAVE DENIED ACCEPTING JESUS CHRIST IN THEIR LIFE IN ORDER TO PERSUE THEIR OWN DESIRES. COME TO JESUS NOT IN FEAR BUT COME TO HIM KNOWING THAT HE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE HERE ON EARTH, AND ONE DAY WE WILL BE WITH HIM IN HEAVEN. READ THIS BOOK NOT TO INCREASE YOUR FAITH, BECAUSE THAT BOOK HAS BEEN HERE LONG BEFORE THIS ONE. WHAT IS IT CALLED? THE BIBLE.

Apalled by reviews 3 by .. Dubious Distinction (by the beach)
I have not read this book. I am considering it therefore I read the reviews with interest. I must say that I am apalled at some of the criticism leveled against the author.

Here is an atheist cardiologist that shares information from his own experience which changed his belief system and he is being attacked by people that don't want to believe what he is saying.

Listen folks - the guy was an educated atheist. He was not some rabid fundamentalist from the backwoods of Arkansas. He did not have any preconceived ideas that caused him to blindly accept what he was experiencing. Neither does he have an agenda.

You atheists that are distrusting of theists - fine, that is your choice. But when members of your own belief system present counter evidence at least be big enough to listen and not attack the messenger. He goes on to say that he knows of NO agnostic or atheist that has experienced an NDE that remains an agnostic or atheist. This is further testimony for you to consider from your like-minded brethren.

Or is all of this talk about being open to truth just a lie??? What will it take for some of you to even CONSIDER the possibility of a God or life after death?

Good in spite of some flaws 4 by .. The Actor (Chicago)
I have to say that this is a good book overall that helped me defend my faith better.

The first section, on the evidence for immortality, is the strongest in my opinion, especially in their case for substance dualism (the traditional soul-body distinction), which is critical for the Christian view of immortality, and refutation of physicalism (the idea that humans are reducible to matter alone).

I have to admit that, even after reading their chapters on Near Death Experiences (NDEs), I still remain a bit skeptical about them, although these chapters certainly gave me a lot to think about and I have to admit that they brought up good points.

Their section on the Resurrection of Jesus didn't provide much information that I didn't already know, but then again I've read book-length defenses of that already so I guess I can't blame the authors too much for that. It's still pretty good given their space, especially if you haven't read a defense of it before.

Their second section, on the nature of immortality, was probably the weakest of the three. It still has a lot of good information in it, but unfortunately it suffers from a bit of excessive speculation on the part of the authors. The chapter on reincarnation, which a surprising number of professing Christians believe in, is pretty useful though, and the chapter on the doctrine of hell brings up some really good points.

The third section, on the implications of immortality (if immortality is true, so what?), is really practical. It has really interesting, informative, and useful discussions on issues like euthanasia, abortion, end-of-life issues, living in light of eternity, fear of death, etc.

Overall this is a very good book, especially if you can overlook its Arminian theological slant. It is evidentialist in its approach. Even though I am a Calvinist who tends to favor presuppositional apologetics over evidentialist apologetics, I still found this book very useful and informative and would recommend it to anyone who is considering becoming a Christian or any Christian who is trying to learn to defend his faith.

I'd recommend reading this book with "Resurrection" by Hank Hanegraaff and "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn. If you liked either of those books you may like this book too; conversely, if you liked this book, you may like those books as well.

Old arguments 3 by .. cody (Stillwater, OK United States)
In reading this book I was very impressed with Dr. Habermas' writings, however it was the opposite with Dr. Moreland. He tries to offer a logical argument for dualism, which is a dead idea. I feel that as Christians we need to get away from the philosophy of Plato and his body/soul distiction. also the use of NDE's in this book is a horrible argument and most of the scientific world laughs out loud at these ideas. I recommed for the philosophical mind that you read Richard Rorty's Objectivism, Relativism and Truth essay on Non-Reductive Physicalism. This is the direction Christianity has to go if it is going to continue to live.

An excellent work 5 by .. ()
It is both comprehensive and scholarly. Includes three sections: evidence for immortality, nature of immortality, and implications of immortality.

Begins with some foundational work on what exactly it means for something to be rational. Works through some traditional arguments for immortality and assesses them. Also covers the claims of Jesus and, significantly, it responds to the claims of athiest Michael Martin. Also discusses NDEs, heaven, and hell.

This book is written with a non-believer in mind. I don't know, however, how convincing it would be to a non-believer because it deals primarily with the mind and not the heart. Additionally, my encounters with non-believers reinforces to me that you can doubt anything, even when it is non-sensical to do so. Faith is an issue of the condition of you heart. What I do know is that the work done in this book is foundational to thinking about immortality, and that anyone seriously interested in this subject will be well served by reading it. I, personally, was able to expand my thinking.

In my experience, anything that JP Moreland puts his hand to is intellectually powerful and dangerous to the secular establishment.

Nothing new 1 by .. Nadim J. Moujabber ()
I just finished reading this book and to say the least it did not impress me at all nor provided any new information on the subject of the soul's immortality.I believe that there is something else other than what we 4D creatures can see, and structuring a vivid imagination into readable literature can only please those who are seeking comfort in bed time stories .. Why would the author insist on repeating many times the vision of mountains , oceans, trees, water falls, valleys ..etc ?. While "traveling" from plane to plane , why does his consciousness need s to constantly picture all those elements of the physical (3D) nature ?. Is it a lack of imagination ?, isn't it supposed to be nothing , pure void between planes of consciousness ?. I thought that existence beyond the physical world does not conform to time and space so why would a "traveling " consciousness needs to travel from plane to plane ? why not just think it ? . Why the need to go through all this landscape ? ..

There is no such thing as death 4 by .. The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net)
WORLDS BEYOND DEATH by Dr. Grant H. Pealer, D.D. is his account of life after death, or transition, as he refers to what most of us think of as death. He gives an account starting from when he was a young child and had memories of his life before he came to this earth. He does caution us to listen when children say things that we find strange. They are probably having a memory of another world. Dr. Pealer continues through his life with his ability to meditate and bring the other world to himself. Through meditation, he is able to travel in the astral world. He indicates anyone dedicated to trying can do this and he gives a step by step process to do so. His contention is that when we pass from this world, it is into the spiritual world and we are here on earth to learn lessons. In other words, this world is a school for our later lives. He includes karma, discusses whether or not we pay for what we've done on earth and whether or not we will be judged by God on that final day. He concludes this is not so; what will happen is we will appear in a court, but only for praise of those good things that we have done. We will not be embarrassed by a recall of the unpleasant things.

Dr. Pealer's book is easily readable, gives room for thought and it will annoy many who have beliefs in various religions as it tends to go against the grain. One thing he did emphasize is God is really a God of love and not of vengeance that so many religions contribute to Him. He indicates a God of love would never do the violent things that many seem to feel He would. In so many words, he says we put God in a box and attribute to him only those things we can understand as human beings. God is so much more than we can imagine. It is an interesting book, but I do think many will find it offensive.

Animals and the Afterlife 5 by .. Shari L. Voltz (Steubenville, OH USA)
This is a beautiful book. It helped me to understand my beloved Titus's death. It answered questions for me that I had about his passing. I urge anyone who has ever loved their pet to buy this book. You will not be sorry.

Very helpful and comforting after the loss of my dog 5 by .. S. McGinnis ()
My dog passed away and I was simply lost. I needed some answers, and this book was proof to me that animals are alive in spirit and are in Heaven waiting for us. It has so many good stories that happened to normal people. Skeptics turned believers on the subject of animal communication. The author is so empathetic and carryin and it is written from the heart. I still turn back to this book for comfort. I must read for someone who has lost an animal. Thank you Kim for an incredible book.

An Amazing Inspiring Book that Changed My Life 5 by .. Melissa A. Desmond (Sydney, Australia)
I cannot begin to say what a wonderful book this is! Having lost a precious companion (Tyson my cat - tragically hit by a car), Ive read a lot of books on pet loss. This book was by far the most helpful. Kim Sheridan is a talented heartfelt writer and her collection of theories and stories are reassuring and heartwarming. I was incredibly lost before reading this book, and since reading it my life is forever changed - for the better! My heart, body, mind and soul have been transformed and I now know that there really is no such thing as death because the afterlife is very real. I am so grateful for Kim to share her experiences and to write this wonderful book, and I have even bought more copies to share with people that have also lost a beloved creature. I cannot say enough good things about this book. If you or someone you know has lost someone special, this book is an absolute MUST READ! 5+ stars to Kim Sheridan!!!

A Haunting Love Story... An Awesome Book! 5 by .. Tia Fanning (Fantasy, Illinois)
Beyond Death by Jinger Jackson is a haunting love story that reads like a dark fairytale... twisted, yet beautifully written. Part paranormal romance, part romantic horror, this story blurs the lines between what we define as love and we define as obsession, and ultimately forces the reader to decide which of the two was powerful enough to conquer death itself.

The story begins with the romance and marriage of two key historical characters--very well known characters to those of us who love history, myth and legend. (As to not give too much of the story away, I will not be naming these characters in this review.)

But those familiar with the characters and their place in actual history will already know how this tragic relationship plays out. While the author does add her own spin on "why" the marriage comes to an abrupt end, the "how" remains fairly true to recorded legend. But the author doesn't stop there. What follows next is a graphic description of the maddness that came about and those who suffered under the wrath of this maddness.

The end of "Part One" is shocking in a yummy, sadistic sort of way (fans of horror will love this!). After being fast-forwarded through time, the author introduces us to a new character named Allana. Allana is our heroine, and she is having a problem keeping her boyfriends alive--to put it mildly.

The second part of this story takes place when Allana is older. Tom, the hero in this book, is crushing on Allana and is pushing for a romantic relationship. Unfortunately, Allana still hasn't gotten rid of that "accident" problem that usually has her lovers dying some horrible, freakish death.

Beyond Death is one of those dark romances that will have you loving the villian as much as you do the hero--which is something I love about the romantic horror genre. For those of you looking for a good romantic horror or a dark paranormal romance, this tale about love, obsession and death will not leave you disappointed.
