excellent bible study resource 5 by .. Book Smart ()
Baxter's "Explore the Book" is one of the most excellent surveys of scripture available. Dr. Baxter's comments are warm, devotional, and practical. However, his suggestion of a possible mid-tribulational rapture (instead of pre-tribulational) concerns me, as does his hyper-dispensational view that Israel was offered the Kingdom a second time in the book of Acts. The Bible clearly teaches that Israel will not receive the Kingdom until the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ and the establishment of his literal, physical Millenial Reign at the end of the Great Tribulation period. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone desiring a deeper understanding of the Bible.

Baxter's Bible Study Guide 5 by .. Arthur Southerland (Hattiesburg, MS USA)
Explore the Book is an excellent source for Bible study. It is extremely detailed, but readable. Baxter's style is scholarly, yet his descriptions are easily understood by readers of all levels of understanding of the Word.

I recommend it highly.

A Treasure Map 5 by .. LCSteve (Carmel Valley, CA USA)
Baxter's Explore the Book can be likened to a treasure map. The Bible is full of gems, a veritable (and verifiable) treasure trove of insight, information, encouragement, and direction, all given under the inspiration of God. At times, though, the underlying message can seem hard to find, or to fully understand when it is discovered. This is where the value of Explore the Book comes in-it is the map to help the reader discover the treasure of God's Word in its fullness.

Explore the Book is actually a complete Bible survey course in one (rather large but comprehensive) volume. Each book of the Bible is given an overview including analysis, a synopsis, and the special features of each. More importantly, however, are the practical applications of the meaning and of the message in each book of the Bible.

Even readers without any background in Bible study will find Explore the Book greatly interesting and helpful, as will those more experienced students of Scripture (including pastors and teachers). This book leads the reader/student to a deeper awareness and appreciation of the grand themes of the Word of God, from Genesis through Revelation.

Probably the finest single volume available 5 by .. Mark Jones (Watkinsville, GA United States)
If I had to give up everything but my Bible, this work would be on my top three "to keep" list. It is a wealth of information. Seldom do I preach, teach or approach any Biblical sermon or topic without consulting Baxter.

Baxter takes each book of the Bible and analyzes it like a masterful painting. His interpretative method of dissection holds the Scriptures in their high place, and wonderfully unveils the very plan and purposes of God woven throughout them. It is a magnum opus of Biblical exposition.

From lay Sunday School teacher to seminarian, _Explore The Book_ provides great utility. It is among the most practical and useful tools on my bookshelf.

It is actually a three volume set in one, and is a bargain when you consider the price against its utility.

Power Pack! 5 by .. Sid (Orlando, Florida United States)
Explore the Book by J. Sidlow Baxter is an absolute phenomenon. This book is to be compared with C-4. It is powerful and explosive!! Baxter does a superior job in analyzing the Holy Scriptures and presenting the facts so that the average lay person may fully grasp pertinent spiritual knowledge. I particularly appreciate how Baxter provides the historical account of the Bible. It helps the reader to understand the original scene and setting, which further assists in our relating the Bible to our modern culture. We do not possess the Bible but we possess a translation of the Bible and Baxter delivers a solid and accurate supplement to our social and cultural understanding. Explore the Book is a must read for everyone that is involved in some kind of ministry. From historical analysis to "type teaching", Baxter's writing clearly packs an awesome punch! I highly recommend that every library of Christian literature save an open slot for Explore the Book. Kudos!

Product Description

In the rural Australia of the fifties where John Baxter grew up, reading books was disregarded with suspicion, owning and collecting them with utter incomprehension. Despite this, by the age of eleven Baxter had 'collected' his first book - The Poems of Rupert Brooke. He'd read the volume often, but now he had to own it. This was the beginning of what would become a major collection and a lifelong obsession. His book-hunting would take him all over the world, but his first real find was in London in 1978, when he spotted a rare copy of a Graham Greene children's book while browsing on a stall in Swiss Cottage. It was going for 5 pence. This would also, fortuitously, be the day when he first encountered one of the legends of the book-selling world: Martin Stone. At various times pothead, international fugitive from justice, and professional rock musician, he would become John's mentor and friend. In this brilliantly readable and funny book, John Baxter brings us into contact with such literary greats as Graham Greene, Kingsley Amis, J.G. Ballard and Ray Bradbury. But he also shows us how he penetrated the secret fraternity of 'runners' or book scouts - sleuths who use bluff and guile to hunt down their quarry - and joined them in scouring junk shops, markets, auction rooms and private homes for rarities. In the comic tradition of Clive James's Unreliable Memoirs, A Pound of Paper describes how a boy from the bush came to be living in a Paris penthouse with a library worth millions. It also explores the exploding market in first editions. What treasures are lying unnoticed in your garage?

Breezy Anecdotes of a Life in and Around Books 4 by .. A. Ross (Washington, DC)
I've been on a kick lately where I'm reading lots of "books about books," and/or "books about reading," which led me to pick this one up. The subtitle "Confessions of a Book Addict" is an apt one, as this is essentially a rambling memoir whose only unifying theme is the author's love of books. And while it does delve into the rarefied (and often grubby) realm of book collecting and collectors, that's not really the focus. Actually, other than the author's lifelong love of books and telling a good story, there is no real focus -- which really isn't a problem, since Baxter is able to maintain the breezy entertaining cadence of born raconteurs. And although like many raconteurs, his stories sometimes veer in unexpected directions and digressions, they are rarely unwelcome ones.

Baxter (a sometime fiction writer and noted film biographer) begins at the beginning, outlining his drab and dreary Australian childhood. Like so many bored kids, he found an outlet in books, films, and eventually pulp magazines. As a teen and young man, he grew up something of a science-fiction fanboy, joining the inner circle of Australia's minuscule sci-fi community, while working a dreary job for the national railroads. After some initial forays into writing (including bios for a porn mag), he heads to London, where his love affair with books turns him from a consumer into a collector. The reader tags along with Baxter as he hobnobs with the weird-but-true characters of the used book trade in London, before he heads off to Roanoke, Virginia to teach, then Los Angeles, and eventually Paris, accumulating and then shedding books along the way.

One has to accept that a lot of the authors and personalities he encounters and discusses aren't exactly household names -- especially for American readers. But the point is not name-dropping (well, maybe that's a little bit of the point), but to recall the bon mots and funny moments he's has around the literati and the scrubby "runners" who formed the backbone of the pre-internet used book trade. And as Baxter ages, the anecdotes shift from bidding on books off the back of a cart in a filthy London back lane, to the high tech book trade now conducted on Albiris and eBay. Collectors of any ilk will thrill along with Baxter as he recounts finding treasure troves of rarities in places overlooked by others -- hope springs eternal! And even if you're not a collector, it's hard not to smile at his colorful descriptions of such disparate scenes as outback movie theaters, '70s orgies (not something I expected in a book about books!), the peculiar nature of Paris bookshops, and the proper decor of one's office in a small Southern college.

To be sure, this is a book by a book lover and for other book lovers. That said, it's not 100% about books by any stretch, and the meandering prose has its dead spots. But on the whole, it's a pretty entertaining memoir, full of unexpected scenes and insights.

Australian Book Lover 3 by .. Virginia Allain (Poinciana, FL)
The book is a mixture of tidbits about famous collectors, the author's coming of age in Australia, obscure collectibles/authors, and whatever else came to the author's mind. Maybe a hardcore collector could keep up with this account.
I gave it up after 118 pages. I love books and was interested in the Australian descriptions, but became discouraged by the disjointedness of the book.

Discombobulation 1 by .. Richard A. Mitchell (candia, new hampshire United States)
This was a terrible disappointment. More of a memoir than anything about book-collecting, it was so disjointed it is hard to say what it was about or what the point was. There seemed to be no context or fabric to the book.

There were, however, HUNDREDS of references to obscure authors, actors, film-writers, magazines and books. There were pages at a time where I was completely lost because I had no idea about whom the author was speaking, but he wrote as if the person was well-known to the reader.

Baxter leads the reader around the world from his beginnings in Australia, thence to Britain to the US and ending in France. Again, there is no context. He would flip from a reference to the obscure artist, to an anecdote about himself or some bookseller or collector and then perhaps mention how he had acquired a book.

If viewed as a book about collecting books, you will not learn much. If viewed as a memoir, there was little that was interesting about the author's life and there was precious little about his life other than acquisitions.

There were a very few nuggets about what makes a book valuable or diminishes its worth to a collector, but they were too few and far between.

If you could not tell by now, I can not see much reason to read this book. I think Mr. Baxter flattered himself to think that either he or his collection would be of general interest.

Memoir and Peek at the World of Book Collecting 5 by .. Timothy Haugh (New York, NY United States)
I am a book collector and I enjoy my passion very much. Many people would say I'm obsessed but it only takes a book like this one to remind myself that I'm in the minor leagues.

Part memoir and part peek into the world of book collecting, Baxter tells of his youth in the wilds of Australia where, like many of us, he delved into the world of comic book and science fiction collecting. He matured along the way with an interest in Graham Greene before dumping that collection and moving onto other literary interests.

And he did not stay in the wilds of Australia forever. He travelled and made his way up in the world of film and publishing. Baxter has had the fortune as a film critic, writer and collector to meet a number of interesting people, from the writers he collected to eccentric bookmen like Martin Stone. The book has a definite British flavor, though Baxter has made some forays into the United States. Still, any book collector will see things he recognizes in Baxter's experiences and, in some cases, things we wished we could have experienced ourselves.

Let's face it, a person with a passion for book collecting will feel some jealousy when reading of some of Baxter's finds and encounters. Unfortunately, most of us do not have the means and/or opportunity to do some of the things Baxter has done. But this does not totally diminish the fun in seeing how he was able to come to have the experiences he had and it makes for a great read for anyone interested in books.

A Literary Lesson 5 by .. J. Guild (Toronto,Canada)

I rated this book 5*'s but not in the normal fashion. The title got my attention as I like "books about books";of which there are a varied lot.To start with, this book is well titled;A Pound of Paper, how unpretentious can you get?
Now, as to my rating:
As an overall book,I enjoyed it at times,at other times I found it a drag,I skipped a lot;but still couldn't put it down.
I rated it 5*'s;but only by adding up 5 single *'s:
1*-As a biography, for anyone who knows the author;I had not
heard of him.
1*- Stories about experiences of buying books and searching
for 1st.editions,inscribed tomes,etc.
1*-Telling what makes a bibliophile "tick".I noted many of
the same traits in myself.
1*- Description of book buying and selling in France.
1*- For the three appendicies.
Each of these areas was overshadowed by his experiences;but so many writers and books were of no interest to me and the whole of Sci-Fi leaves me cold as I don't tend to read much of it;although one with that interest would probably rate the book a 5*,for that material alone. Also, the book is heavily slanted to British and Aussie books and hardly mentions anything else. This is understandable as this was where he lived and where his interests lie.
Nevertheless any bibliophile will enjoy the book and it is really a 5*.I plan to keep it ,mainly for the appendicies.

Someday by Karen Kingsbury 5 by .. Meriam Webster (California)
Karen Kingsbury is one of the best Christain fiction authors I have ever read. I have read all of the books about the Baxter family, the author really captures your interest in each member of the Baxter family. She takes each character and walks you through their problems and how they all come to know Christ (or renew their faith) and lean on him to help them through their lives. I have read the first series and have one more book to go on the Sunrise Series.

Sentence Fragments 4 by .. Sally (Pembroke Pines, FL)
Karen Kingsbury writes such realistic characters that as I read her novels, I find myself tearing up with the problems they experience. This Sunrise series is an especially good one as it deals with the Baxter family over a period of time. I can't wait to read the final installment that concludes the Baxter saga.

I add a caveat, however; the author write in sentence fragments, and this Drives Me Nuts!

Great Series 5 by .. JW (Puyallup, Wa)
I have never read a book series and this one pulled me right in. Karen Kingsbury is a great writer and I can't wait to read her other books.

True Hollywood Story 4 by .. Deborah (Reston, VA)

Newlyweds and movie stars, Dayne and Katie Matthews are on separate continents filming for their respective films. Even though they love and trust each other, doubts and fears begin to creep in. Then a tabloid prints a picture featuring someone who looks very much like Dayne frolicking with a female costar. Only Dayne knows the truth about the picture but he is sworn to secrecy. Will he ruin his new found reputation as a Christian and his marriage to protect the real perpetrator?

A few months ago, I felt like I was the only reader on earth who hadn't read a Karen Kingsbury novel. Then I picked up my first Baxter Family story and got immediately hooked. What I have enjoyed most about this series is the realistic portrayal of the life of a Hollywood actor. I'm ashamed to admit that I'm one of those who enjoy flipping through the gossip rags that are on display at the checkout counter. I like seeing what the stars are doing. So it was rather interesting to read what it's like from the celebrity's point of view of how damaging the paparazzi really can be. You never really think about how much the media can twist something into a lie. I really wanted to smack Luke while reading this book. As realistic as Dayne has been in the majority of the series, he struck me as kinda fake in this one. If I had been in his shoes, and my brother did something to make everyone in the world think I was a cheater and wreck my marriage, I would not be a happy camper. I'm not saying he should have punched Luke but it seem too easy to forgive him just like that. And Luke didn't really show that much remorse which made it more unbelievable that Dayne was forgiving like that. The stories involving the other members of the family were equally as riveting. I really like reading about John's growing relationship with Elaine. It's very romantic and touching to see two people with huge losses be able to come together and fall in love. I also enjoyed reading about CKT. I really wish we had one of those productions when I was growing up. I would have loved to be a part. I'm going to be sad to leave the Baxter family behind in the next book but as they say, "All good things must come to an end."

Creeped out by the Flanigans 3 by .. Another Writer ()
OK...this wasn't my favorite of the series. I loved "Summer." I love Ashley. She is by far my favorite Baxter.

In this one I hated the deception and miscommunication that comes between Dayne and Katy. The author has given us, what, 7+ books so far to establish that they are madly, passionately in love, and they've been married what, six months--and already Katy believes Dayne is cheating on her? It just doesn't ring true to the characters or their relationship. (Again, though--Ashley saves the day. She always does.)

Is anyone else creeped out by the Flanigans? Think about it--the makeup of the "Flanigan" family--a daughter followed by five boys, three of whom are adopted from Haiti, mom's a writer--is identical to that of the author's own family...and the Flanigans are held up as the ideal, perfect, model family? At least the Baxters have their human side. The worst thing I've seen in all the books was when Jenny was briefly slightly annoyed with Katy because Bailey didn't get a big part in a CKT show. If that's the biggest flaw she has, yikes, there's no hope for the rest of us. Even the names of the kids are similar--"Bailey" and Kelsey, "Connor" and Tyler, "Justin" and Austin, etc. I definitely come away with the feeling that the author is holding up her own family, barely fictionalized, as the epitome of perfection, and it comes across as prideful...I'm reminded of Romans 12:3: "examine yourselves with sober judgment and do not think of yourselves more highly than you ought."

I'm sick of Dayne and Katy and the whole "fame" angle and I hope the last book focuses on Bloomington. That's where the Baxter fans want to be! Oh, I do like Dayne, though. He seems like a good person, especially because he hasn't yet drowned his awful brother Luke in Lake Monroe!

Summer is funner 5 by .. JEFFREY SMITH (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This is a great addition to the wonderful Christian book series about Baxter and his life. Gave this to my wife who loves these series and has read just about all of Karen Kingsbury's books.

Karen is back in fine form! 4 by .. Nicole Bain (Kingston, Jamaica)
As a reader of several of Ms. Kingsbury's books and a huge fan of the Redemption series, I have to admit that the Fame books left me more than a little disappointed. By the start of the Sunrise series I had begun to wonder if the writer would ever return to her former "glory". But, thank God, with this book she has done it. With Summer she has managed keep the reader riveted without resorting to overly fantastical plot twists, and has brought us a touching, sometimes heartrending and ultimately heartwarming story of struggle, loss, acceptance and God's unchanging love in the midst of it all. Once again I feel as though I want to journey with the Baxter family as they navigate the road of life. Well done Karen Kingsbury! I look forward to reading the next installment...

Awesome book! 5 by .. Sherry Jones (LaVergne, TN)
Another great book by Karen Kingsbury! I am going to hate it when the Baxters are no longer around!

Life is Not Always Easy 5 by .. Angie Kinney (Alabama)
I appreciated this book because it deals with the fact that God does not always answer our prayers the way we would like for Him to, BUT He always is there in the midst of our pain and hurting. Karen Kingsbury is my favorite author of all time because she confronts issues that many of us face--divorce, death, unwed pregnancy, adoption...but shows the compassion, love, and forgiveness of God and shows that it is also possible for us to lavish the same attributes on others.

Karen Kingsberry's Amazing Stories 5 by .. Priscilla Wolfe (Englewood, Florida)
Karen Kingsberry is an outstanding author. "Summer" is just one of her many books. Her characters seem so authentic due to the fact that Karen takes them through many of the trials that occur in the lives of our family members or friends. What is more amazing is how these people overcome their trials which could easily be applied to our own personal lives. Her characters are interwoven as is the case of our relationships with others. As far as I am concerned, Karen should be on the New York Best Seller's List!

When Laura Baxter Jacobs finds out that her husband is involved in an adulterous relationship and wants a divorce, she decides she will love him and remain faithful to her marriage at all costs. This book shows how God can redeem seemingly hopeless relationships, and it illustrates one of Gary Smalley's key messages: Love is a decision.

Redemption is the first book in the five-book Redemption series that Gary and Karen will write about the Baxter family--their fears and desires, their strengths and weaknesses, their losses and victories. Each book will explore key relationship themes as well as the larger theme of redemption, both in characters' spiritual lives and in their relationships. Each book includes study questions for individual and small-group use as well as a "teaser" chapter of the next book in the series.

Christian Fiction? 1 by .. Sylvia R. ()
I was really looking forward to reading this book. However, I was extremely disappointed. It just seems that Karen Kingsbury writes trashy fiction for Christians and in my opinion the way this book turned out I don't even see this as Christian fiction at all. It was littered with adultery and in the end we get the sense that the Lord would reward the adultery (I have not read the other books in this series and will never touch another Karen Kingsbury book again). I won't give away the ending. Unfortunately, Ms. Kingsbury tries desperately to write like Francine Rivers and even copies the manner by which she places Scripture but she is far from the gifted writing of Francine Rivers. Francine Rivers actually chooses topics of depth not the trashy romantic novel reinvented in a Christian paperback that I am so sick and tired of....No more Karen Kingsbury for me...

Redemption Book 1 4 by .. JEFFREY SMITH (Los Angeles, CA USA)
If you like audio books, this is a great addition to the wonderful Christian book series of Redemption about Baxter. My wife and I tried this out because she raved so much to me that I thot we could listen while traveling. BUT, with a single person reading it the characters are not defined enough and so it gets confusing to me. My wife had a hard time following this audio presentation as well.
Guess we will just stay with the books which are great!

Hard to leave 3 by .. Carole J. Jones (Colorado Springs, CO)
The beginning of the book and the subject of betrayal, could have been very depressing but I really wanted to know what the title had reference to. Whether this man could have been forgiven and the turnaround. I didn't see how so it kept me involved. I loved all the good references to family, their times together and their loyalty to their daughter and sister. Very surprising ending. I think it was very well written.

Absolutely spellbinding! 5 by .. L. Austin (NC, USA)
This is one of the most intriguing books I have read in recent years. I was attracted to this series because I know of Gary Smalley's work and found it interesting that he would combine real-life counseling and fictional characters. Frankly, I think it was a genius idea because we are having more people read and discover helps for their own lives because they are willing to read fiction when they wouldn't read other books. I love the way that the main characters seek God's leadership before making any decisions and follow his will. God's way is the best way is driven home by having those who willfully disobey what they know God's will to be and suffer the consequences. I simply could not wait even one night to get the following book when I was through with one. Therefore, I went and bought all 13 available books in the series so I would never have to wait.

Karen Kingsbury 5 by .. Kelly G (Portland, Oregon)
This was the last book in the Sunrise Series and the final book for this family - There have been several different series involving this family and I've read every book in each of the different series leading up to this one. As always, Karen Kingsbury leaves you wanting the next book. Unfortunately this is the last one for this family.

All of her books grab your attention from the first page and if you've never read any of her books, this is a must read author.

Baxter Family Finale 5 by .. Terri L. Kupiec ()
Wow! That is the first word that comes to mind after reading this fourth and final book in the Sunrise Series by Karen Kingsbury. Karen Kingsbury writes so that you feel like you are a part of each and every book! I felt like I was a Baxter or a very close friend of the family anyway. This series, as well as every book that Karen Kingsbury has written, is a must read! I have yet to read just an "okay" book written by this author. I highly recommended this author and this book.

Awesome Booj 5 by .. B. Moran (PA)
I absolutely love this series. It is just a compelling storyline about a family who has all kinds of things happen to it and the only way they all get through it is with God's help. I cried while reading everyone of the books in this series. I recommend though that you start at the beginning of the series. This is actually the third series about this family.

Disappointing ending to an otherwise outstanding series 2 by .. Mom of Twodaloo ()
Sunset is the fourth book in the Sunrise Series and the last of 14 books about the Baxter family. I immensely enjoyed the first 13 books and had looked forward to this final book with much anticipation and even a little sadness. After finishing it, however, I only felt disappointment.

Knowing that this was to be the "end" of the Baxter story, Kingsbury tries to wrap up ALL of the loose ends from the previous books...many of which did not need wrapping up. Happy endings are enjoyable, but when every single ending is picture perfect, the story loses a lot of the realism that makes the rest of the series so easy to relate to. There was less depth in this book, and too many easy answers.

Finally, the thing that bothered me most in this book was the way that Angela Manning (from the very first Baxter book, Redemption) is reintroduced. How would she not have recognized Kari?!? They spoke face-to-face in Redemption! And under the circumstances, neither would ever forget the other. The fact that the author forgot -- as well as her editors and the many other people who read her books before they go to print -- is hard to comprehend. That entire storyline felt forced and untrue.

The series is an excellent one, and Kingsbury is one of my favorite authors, but Sunset left much to be desired.

Sunset 5 by .. Teresa W. Woodard (Lucama, North Carolina)
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful as always when Karen Kingsbury writes a book. I love the inspriational writings and I have enjoyed reading about the Baxter's. I always buy her books and many are waiting to borrow when I am through reading. Again this is, as always, very good reading.
