Great book for navigating your way on Amazon 5 by .. Ken and Norah Fritz (West Richland, WA USA)
This book has really opened my eyes on how one can market on Amazon. It's a great community for both the buyer and seller. The book's main focus is how to expose merchandise to potential buyers. The book has information on: writing an author biography, the usefulness of book reviews, author connect, the power of blogging, and creating lists on listomania. If these words are teasers, then read the book. Brent explains how Amazon is set up and how you can use it's infrastructure to accelerate book sales. It requires work but can all be done at from the comforts of home. Amazon is a little difficult to navigate but Brent Sampson's book is the most useful chart to insure your books sales won't hit a rock. Ken Fritz author of The United States Radio Directory: A Traveler's Favorite Companion 2008-2009

Must-Have for Anyone Selling on Amazon 5 by .. Jaimey Grant (Michigan)
This book is an invaluable tool for authors wanting some inside information on how the Amazon system works. Increased sales start with increased exposure and increasing your book's exposure on Amazon can be tricky. With tips and guidelines covering everything that was available at the time of publication--2007; some things have obviously changed--this book can help any author increase exposure of their print-on-demand or self-published work.

Brent Sampson has an easy-to-read, witty writing style that is refreshing in what basically amounts to a "self-help" book. He uses a simple ranking method to rate each tip he gives, 1 star=can be expensive & not recommended - 5 stars=inexpensive & highly recommended. He includes diagrams and figures and explains in simple detail each aspect of Amazon from the importance of each section on the Book Detail Page to the value of So You'd Like to...Guides. By implementing only a few of his suggestions, I have seen a marked increase in exposure to my own books (Betrayal, Heartless, Spellbound, & Redemption), as well as my profile page. I'm truly impressed!

Thank you, Mr. Sampson! 5 by .. Joseph L. D'Agostino (Hershey, PA)
The most beneficial tactic that I was inspired to incorporate into my publishing and marketing process was one that Mr. Sampson subliminally suggests pretty much throughout the whole book: Just do it!

Obviously, anyone who purchases this book is one who has a book that he or she wishes to publish. As such, that writer will more than likely be a newcomer to publishing, and perhaps be geared toward the "print-on-demand" method, as I was. Well, that's perfectly acceptable, and there is no dishonor in that. Your work will speak for itself; if it is worthy, if will merit acceptance.

Regarding the techniques and applicability of those techniques to the ever-evolving Amazon site, the new publisher simply needs to be on his or her toes and be flexible (for example, "Search Inside/Look Inside"). Being sharp and attentive, however, is expected of anyone who wishes to self-publish and self-market. Mr. Sampson, in his energetic way, prompts that approach. For me, this book was very informative, and it was a definite confidence booster.

For all authors, not only Print on Demand Self-Publishers 4 by .. LOTONtech (www.lotontech.com)
I stumbled upon the techniques described in this book myself, before reading the book. Contrary to what some reviewers have said, the techniques DO work -- as the sales rank of this book shows -- if only because "any publicity is good publicity".

Yes, in an ideal world, readers would inadvertently market your books via their Listmania lists, reviews, and so on; but you need to give the process a kick-start yourself as the author / publisher. Some readers might be put off by your self-promotion, but they would never have found your book in the first place without your own marketing efforts.

I think the techniques are legitimate, and not SPAM, providing you: DON'T review books you haven't read, DON'T include your book in Listmania lists of totally unrelated books, and DON'T engage in Sock Puppetry (pretending to be someone else).

As for the book itself:

The margins are wide and there are fewer words per page than most books. I wish I'd thought of that, as a way of increasing my page counts. The information is presented clearly, as you can see from the 'customer images' (which is another good marketing technique, and a nice touch).

Since it focuses on Amazon, this book is perhaps most relevant for authors who are self-publishing using CreateSpace -- because CreateSpace lists your books only on Amazon.com. Authors who have wider distribution (e.g. using Lulu) can think about how the same techniques apply to other retailers like Barnes and Noble. B&N have Essentials Lists, for example.

And now to explain the title of my review:

As Dan Poynter and others have noted in their books: even if you publish your book via a traditional publisher, YOU the author need to market your own book -- perhaps using these techniques. Unless you are already famous, most mainstream publishers will not market your book effectively. I know, because I've been there.

And now, my review would not be complete without:

Great for New Booksellers 5 by .. An Honest Reviewer (Detroit)
I read this book when I first started selling books on amazon and I had so many questions. This book answered them all in a simple, direct manner. I have read just about every book that comes out on the subject, and this by far is the most informative and well written. Who cares about the cheap plastic binding? It's the information inside that is important and in this regard, this book is a winner!

Getting this guide is like hiring a personal trainer and mentor. 5 by .. downeast bookseller ()
Yes, it's true that Amazon itself does a good job of being user-friendly for sellers, but for new-to-the-business folks like me, this is a terrific guide. It's like hiring a personal trainer who's at your side when you want her. It's like exercise--yes, you can do it all by yourself, but it does help to have that one-on-one expertise.

Miller is organized, clear and concise and, she's got a cheeky sense of humor to relieve tension and remind you that, yes, you can do this and it's going to be fine and it's going to be fun! The format is actually easier to use than a paperback book because I can prop it open on the desk to refresh my memory as I work and for whatever step I'm at: creating an accurate listing, contacting customers, finding tools and services to take it to the next level, and so on. In addition, her insider tips from her years in the business are quite helpful and easy to follow.

This is a particularly helpful first guide and then you can graduate and move onto the more sophisticated and involved stuff. Great investment.

I got my start with this book! 5 by .. Idaho Cat Lady (Boise, Idaho)
I love books and wanted to investigate selling them on Amazon, so I bought this book. It basically gave me everything I needed to know to get started, and the incentive to try. Although I am still very small, just selling a few books a week, I am in the process of building my inventory and have found that Ms. Miller is right - this is a do-able and profitable business and this book was absolutely invaluable in helping me to get started, and I am going to re-read it again as a continuing reference.

Must Read for a would-be bookseller or experienced bookseller 5 by .. Charles (Park Ridge Illinois)
Concise and to-the-point. Easy read. Great real-life examples of seller success stories. Chock full of helpful tips and advice to increase your sales and maintain motivation. If you want to be successful selling books, then read this book first. In fact, read it a few times just to be sure the information hits home. You can easily read it in just over an hour or so. Five-star effort all the way! Thanks Christine!

Okay Info for beginers 3 by .. Allison (Tennessee)
I have been selling books on Amazon for several months now and was looking for a book that could give me a little more expertise and tips on how to be more effective at buying and selling books. I found this book to be mostly information I have read many times before in other places, with very little new useful info for anyone who has been selling for more than a few months. This book has some good information for new book sellers, but you can get 99% of this info by reading the Amazon.com guidelines on selling and reading Michael E. Moulds' blog, both of which are free. If you don't want to spend 30 minutes on Google to get this information for yourself, then this is the book for you. If not, don't waste your money.

Gardener's Journal 5 by .. F. D. Driscoll (East Longmeadow, Massachusetts United States)
An excellent book and becoming hard to find in new condition. I have had two of these in the past and wanted a third one for the years 2009-2013. The easiest book for someone who likes to compare data from year to year.

Good Hints and Down-to-Earth Information 5 by .. gojobooks (Louisiana, USA)
I highly recommend this book for anyone with a home-based book business with Amazon or any other on-line store. The ideas are right on and elementary. Yet, if you already have a business, the information and web sites he gives in the book are valuable.

A Good Resource 4 by .. Timothy Haugh (New York, NY United States)
I've sold a few books on eBay, but I've never really tried seriously to make money at it. However, I have the advantage of having long experience in the book trade. Still, I was wondering what might be particular about the online world, so I decided to take a look at this book since Steve Weber is someone who started small and built a successful online business. For the most part, this book is a valuable tool for someone who really wants to make it.

There are a number of things that I really like about this book. He's very smart about where to find books and about what books are smart to acquire. He's particularly acute with suggesting areas that should be avoided and those that are easy to overlook (certain types of textbooks, particular areas of history-- "learn to find unusual books"). In these areas, his suggestions often gibe with my own experience, though I'm more excited about certain areas than he is.

He's also quite good on the mechanics of running an online business, though I focused mainly on his general suggestions about tracking inventory, pricing and customer service. He goes a bit overboard when suggesting websites and software worth looking at to manage some of these tasks. A few simple, straightforward suggestions might serve the beginner better.

And, of course, this book suffers from the fate of all books that deal with online services. Published in 2006, some of the specific suggestions, particularly concerning the smaller companies, are already out-of-date. If you stick with the larger companies, however, you probably won't have too much trouble.

In the end, this book provides valuable insight into running a bookstore. It doesn't matter whether you are someone who already owns a store and wants to get your inventory online or someone starting from scratch, there is valuable advice here.

Much more than you paid for! 5 by .. Victorya Rogers (Dallas, TX United States)
I read Home-Based Bookstore because I have hundreds of perfect condition used books I just cleared out from my personal library at home and wanted to see if I could sell them on Amazon and didn't know how to get started. Just like Steve Weber's other books, you get much more than you pay for. Weber fills this book with details covering every aspect of setting up your home based used bookstore for NO MONEY upfront. How cool is that? Where as other books on the topic have been reviewed saying they just recycle what you can find on Amazon help pages, Weber includes tons of insider information far beyond what is found on Amazon's help links, such as what and where to find books to sell, how to price them correctly, how to package and ship, get feedback from customer, handling negative feedback, handling taxes, etc. etc. etc. No question you can think up appears to be lacking an answer on these pages...and here's another exciting upside...within 2 days of reading this book and setting up my store, I've already sold and shipped THREE of my books. Thanks Steve...and keep sharing your insider information.

Good If You're A Beginner, Otherwise . . . 3 by .. Joe Waynick (Phoenix, AZ USA)
If this is your first read on bookselling you'll get quite a bit out of it. If you've been around for awhile, you'll still find interesting ideas, but not as manay as a beginner.

I found the information in this book to be mostly conceptual rather than day-to-day practical advice. And there are numerous typographical errors including misused words, misspellings, and mathematical problems in his formulas. In fact, there are so many mistakes it made me wonder about the accuracy of much of the information in the rest of the book. Mr. Morrill should have utilized the services of a good editor.

Readability aside, the book covers the basics. In addition, it has nice sections on grading your books and where to buy books. He also spends a generous amount of time discussing the ins and outs of the Amazon bookseller forums - that's something I haven't seen in other bookselling books. Finally, the section on navigating the Amazon seller interface was very interesting.

There's certainly enough material here that can be more fully developed to enrich the reader's experience. And I suspect Mr. Morrill will leverage his work in furture revisions.

If you sell books I think you'll get ideas from this read. But at 200 pages, wading through all the material that's presented to find one or two nuggets may not be your cup of tea. But then again, I like going on treasure hunts.

Not impressed 1 by .. An Honest Reviewer (Detroit)
This book is very poorly written and edited (bad grammar, misspellings, redundancies galore). The information itself is very basic and generic, without much specific detail. Much information is left out, unintelligible or misleading. Mr. Morrill probably knows how to sell books on amazon, he is just not a writer.

Exellent Book To Get Your "Selling Books Online" Business Started 5 by .. Michael Ellington ()
I have bought and sold stuff online for awhile and yet this book had a lot of useful information that I didn't know about. It gives useful, specific sources for many different categories of how to sell books online.
I have paid much more for courses and books from so called marketing and ecommerce experts that didn't have near as much information.
So often you will read or hear that you need to do this or that, but often enough these books are difficult to apply unless you have a large amount of capital invested into the business (which most of us do not have such luxury).
The many different categories of selling advice would at first make you think that it just glosses over them but once you start to read you see that they are one of the strengths of this book... you just keep finding good advice to tweak and improve your online business.
From web site design and boosting traffic to credit card acceptance to keeping your customers happy or even legal advice for people just starting out, it's hard to name just one part that would be considered the best part of this book. It doesn't matter if you are only thinking about starting an online book business or if you have various web sites and are an experienced eBay user, there will be something in here that will make you glad you bought it.

Selling Books on Amazon 5 by .. George H. Glade ()
Where was this book when I wrote my 1st book? This is a must read for the self published or small press author, although not the target audience. The writer identifies the pitfalls and things to consider when starting your own on-line store. Bringing this book up on the amazon site, you see all of the ways the author discusses on getting cross pollination with other books and sources of sales. This was particularly useful.

excellent resource 5 by .. Nancy A. Morrill (.enumclaw, WA)
chock full of helpful information for online selling. Easy to read. I found the resource leads and development suggestions most useful - a well thought out book that I will refer to often.

Just turned him into the one-book Listmania wondertech 5 by .. Thayne Hudson (Great Lakes Region, U.S.A.)
It's because Mike understands two things in life - write what you know and help others get what they need. He was on Kindle walking people through the set-up agony. Not enough on-site techs on staff, but Mike was there as a trouble-shooter. He was also learning what the fine tuning problems were in setting your book on Kindle. That is why this book is so thorough. I was ready to hang myself. Thanks Mike. See your Listmania on my profile page. Really. Only one book on the list.

During my own efforts to publish my two books on Kindle, Mike was the one person I could always depend on to know the ins and outs and who demonstrated a willingness to share his experience with anyone who needed aid. I know that there are a host of others who would say the same.

Top Self Publishing Firms 5 by .. Dr. Tami Brady (Calgary, Canada)
You've written your book. It might be the next great American novel, your heartfelt memoir, the results of years of personal research, a collection of poems, or anything in between. You thought the hard part was behind you. Unfortunately, it's just about to begin.

Now with manuscript in hand (or rather on file), you need to find someone to publish your work. Maybe you've gone to countless publishers and been turned down. More likely, you've decided that you want more control over your baby. So you've chosen to self-publish through a Publish on Demand (POD) firm.

Now comes the hard part. Not all POD's are equal. The amounts that they charge vary substantially as do the services they provide. Then there's distribution and royalty rate issues to work through.

Thank goodness for Top Self Publishing Firms. This book includes an easy to understand chart showing the overall ratings in a variety of categories (sales results, royalties, costs, distribution, and overall value) of the top POD firms. This makes comparing the different options so much easier. More information about each company is then provided later on in the book so that you can find the publisher that best suits your needs.

Useful and Inspiring--Outstanding! 5 by .. Jocelyn E. Andersen (Auburndale, FL USA)
Stacie Vander Pol did an outstanding job, not only in pulling the information in this book together, but in presenting it in such an easy reference format. It's a great book, so needed. The book is not only informative but, as an author, I found it inspiring as well. every author who is considering self-publishing should get a copy of this book before making a final decision.

Excellent resource 5 by .. Stephanie Chandler (Sacramento, CA United States)
Stacie really did her homework for this book. If you are considering publishing with the assistance of a print-on-demand firm, this book will likely save you a lot of research time. The comparison chart on pages 46-47 is worth the price of the book alone! Well done.

Read This Book 5 by .. Alan Gettis (River Edge, NJ USA)
If you are thinking about self publishing, this is a must read. It can save you lots of grief, point you in the right direction, and help you to make the best decisions possible. Stacie Vander Pol's extensive research and business expertise combine to work for you so that you can smartly choose the best publisher for your book. She takes the 26 best firms and compares them head to head on a variety of dimensions such as best value publishing packages, sales performance, royalties, contracts, and distribution. There is also valuable information on leveraging Amazon and promoting your book. Do not self publish before you read this book!

Reg Parnell 5 by .. Reginald K. Parnell (Perth, Western Australia)
How embarrassing for Stacie - she has written a wonderful, helpful book on self publishing, which I will use often. In the book she rates CreateSpace, her own publisher, very highly. Imagine my surprise when my copy arrived from Amazon - I had TWO full copies of the book bound inside one cover! Possibly due to this, the cover wasn't properly printed. The "podpeople" have struck.

son's favorite book 5 by .. M. Lariz ()
This is my son's absolute FAVORITE book and has been since he was 6 months (he's 13 months now). He pushes other books away and laughs the whole time we read this. Great book!

Moo, Baa, Blah 2 by .. A. Vance (San Francisco Bay Area)
In looking for another whimsical, creative, offbeat baby book like Pat the Bunny I found that this title was purchased through Amazon by people who bought Pat and so I bought it as well.

I certainly expected Moo Baa to have some more unexpected sounds than just the pigs' "La La La." I also expected it to have some kind of story connecting everything.

Instead the pigs sing -- something not entirely foreign to a baby book -- seven very typical barnyard animals make their actual sounds (along with Rhinoceroses), and finally there's the usual twist where the reader/listener is involved, something that was probably pretty creative the first time it was done.

The cartoons are nicely New-Yorker-esque. But this particular drawing style (not sure if it's always Boynton) has become so popular that it reminds me of a nice font that everyone uses and no one notices any more. At least Eric Carle's style isn't displayed on cartoons taped to office doors and on coffee mugs.

Other than the drawings and the one conceit this is an almost embarrassingly plain book that I do not anticipate using much. I will update the review if somehow my daughter ends up loving it and it inspires her to get involved in amateur theater. Until then I'll have to try hard to read it with any enthusiasm.

Favorite book for our 9 month old 5 by .. Annette (Honolulu, Hawaii)
This is an absolute favorite for our 9-month old son. He loves to turn the pages and squeals in delight when he sees "some other dogs go BOW WOW WOW". Highly recommend this short but funny book!

Fond memories 5 by .. E. Climis (New Haven, CT)
I'm now an adult and have very fond memories of this book (as well as Boynton's other books). My parents read this to me as an infant and I loved it. I will take great pleasure in sharing her books with my own children when I have them.

a fun and light read! 5 by .. Nadz ()
my 19 month old still loves this book.. at around 13 months he would come to me with the book and tell me 'mom MOOO' ... then we'd read the book together, he loves the animals and the words are so easy to memorise so even though we read it a million times (cuz he loves it that much) i can do other things while still reading him the story by heart as he turns each page.
Also , because it is a nice light read I don't mind reading it over and over again as young children seem to constantly want! :)

One great book! 5 by .. R. Tausch (in the middle of Michigan's mitten)
Jubilee, my 7 month old grand baby loves this book! It always makes her smile. Check it out at your local library and then buy it for your favorite baby as I did :-]

My 7-month old loves it! 5 by .. Natalie M. Jamieson (Austin, Texas)
My sister got this for my 7-month old daughter for Christmas. She loves it. It keeps her attention and she kicks her little legs in excitement each time I read it to her. I like how the pages give you a little hint as to what will be on the following page (cow print for cow, train tracks for train, etc...). I also like that it is nice and short, perfect for the attention span of my little one.

Fun Book! 5 by .. D. Evans (New Mexico)
My two-year-old granddaughter loves this fun little book. It's sturdy enough to withstand her exuberant reading style. After a couple of days, she was able to "read" it to me. A child over three may find it too simple to keep her attention.

cute for young toddlers 4 by .. Helen Mckenzie (Florida)
My 9 months old likes this but the 22 month old already seems to be past this stage. It is good for very young kids.

Peek a Who 5 by .. mom12345 (Florida)

Product Description

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room--to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one--he says goodnight.

In this classic of modern children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

Size of the book in Picture is a BIG FAT LIE 2 by .. Stephanie M. Carrithers ()
I was looking for a large board book (the size of the book in the picture). What came in the mail was a small board book! This picture of the little girl holding the book (under the book for sale) is a trick. It is nowhere near that size and this should be considered to be FALSE advertising! I was extremely disappointed! I must emphasize that the book is great, I was just deceived by the size.

Magical Little Book! 5 by .. D. Gran (Newington, CT)
I received this book as a shower gift and thought it looked outdated. I started reading it along with a few other books to my son when he was only two months old. This was the only book he paid attention to. The bright illustrations caught his attention and the words seemed to entertain him. He's now a busy 11 month old and it is our go to book to calm him at bedtime. I will buy a copy for every expectant mother I know along with "Peek a Who" - our other household favorite!

A Wonderful Book!!! 5 by .. Allie (Palm Beach, FL)
I remember reading this book as a child and I would often ask my mom to read me it as a bedtime story at least once a week. Even now at the age of 22, I still have my old copy of the book. It's a timeless classic that will last through the ages!

I still haven't received the book "Goodnight Moon." I ordered it over a month ago. Can you tell me why it's taking so long?

Amazon Recommends V: Goodnight Moon -- Margaret Wise Brown 3 by .. PolarisDiB (Southwest, USA)
Okay, ummm...

Somehow, all of my ratings and reviews for schlocky Japanese movies, Czechoslavakian animation, classic foreign films, experimental shorts, classic novels, and post-modern literature led to the recommendation of THIS. Granted, it is a classic: at 60 years old and counting, "Goodnight Moon" has apparently charmed generations of children and become a dependable picture book for parents. However, I am an unmarried 22 year old college student with decidedly adult tastes and less than half a thought to a future of having children. This makes me definitely not the target audience (newborn to 3 years or parents of such) for this piece.

That said, it's not like I can't see the qualities in this book. It looks to be a very effective nighttime story for putting toddlers to sleep: the repetition of and rhythm of the words creates a mantra-like effect to help calm the mind, the drawings are appropriately balanced and the colors a pleasant mute to keep the eyes from being over-stimulated while remaining interesting, and the theme of going to sleep can be pretty suggestive. Even as a story-book for non-nighttime uses, it's division between a broader view of the room and then a focus on the details could potentially help kids develop the abilities to identify and distinguish. As best as I can figure out child-rearing theory from this piece unto itself, it seems like a pretty good deal to get this book for your tiny bundle of nerves and wakefulness. But what would I know about it?

So why did I bother rating and reviewing this product if it's not "for me"? Well, simply because it amuses me that it somehow went to the top of my recommendations, plus the open-mindedness behind the idea of taking the Amazon engine's recommendations at face value. Hey, it wasn't a wasted two minutes it took to read this. And of some note is the page of the book within which nothing is drawn and the words say, "Good night, nobody." That page struck me because it seems pretty random in context of the work itself plus the idea behind children's development literature itself. I think it was included mostly to fit everything into the syntax and structure of the book, but still I think it's quite profound to include, among aspects of a room and its details, the sense of nothingness in between all the somethings. A children's book that recognizes nihil? Who knew?!

My three star rating of this product does not reflect the quality of it: it gets five stars because it seems like a well-crafted picture book. The lower rating reflects Amazon's specific recommendation of it to me. I mean, I know how it came to be... you rate some dark movies, it recommends Sweeney Todd, you rate that, it recommends Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you rate that, it recommends some Roald Dahl books (which I'm looking forward to revisiting if they get recommended, too), you rate those that you've read, it recommmends some children's lit, and before you know it you're rating The Paperbag Princess which you remember enjoying quite a bit when you were little. All because you liked the Rocky Horror Picture Show! Can't say I'm really complaining, though, because this has been a fairly fresh and unique review to approach writing. I've never really had to consider the qualities of picture books before, but their graphic presentation and concise wording present interesting things to think about unto themselves.
