Really takes you through each essay and asks you various questions about it. It's covering pretty much everything about writing. I recommend it.

The university where I teach allows us to choose our own composition text. After much research and personal experience with several composition texts, I use this guide. While I agree that the selected essays do have a liberal slant I do not agree that the writing is too difficult for a freshman to understand.

There is no way that I would assign the entire textbook, cover to cover, for one semester. Even the authors do not suggest this. I use the chapters on reading and writing rhetoric, research, critical data analysis, and writer conferencing with all of my composition classes. Then I pick and choose which specific writing projects/chapters I will use for different levels.

I highly recommend this textbook. It has a lot of acurate and useful information and is a great source for a composition course.

To counterbalance the liberal essays, I add in several others from many different perspectives and fields to allow students to have a wider understanding of the world.

I have been required to use this text at one school where I teach, and it is a dismal experience. Most of the other instructors feel the same way, but we are overruled by a minority opinion.

The authors do not have a clue that they are writing this book for a freshman college audience. You need advanced reading skills in order to be able to understand some of the chapters in this book. For example, they overly complicate the chapter on writing evaluations.

The readings are also dry and have a noticeably liberal slant. Although, there are a couple of interesting ones, such as the essay about Sesame Street being sexist. However, there are not enough readings to provide good examples for students to use as models.

If I was not forced to use the book, I would not. This is too much money to spend on a book that is not especially useful.

A difficult book to use by .. L. Ogle ()
I have to use this book in a technical writing course and I find it difficult to use and read, especially if you are new to the field.

The formatting and layout of the book makes it easy to lose track of which section you are in (using a numbering system to identify sections would be helpful) and it needs more white space. The author tends to be verbose at times and this also helps to "lose" the reader.

A short answer or multiple choice question section would be useful to help in review of material covered in a chapter.

The index seems somewhat sparse and a "master" glossary at the end would be useful.

A Must-Have for Technical Writers! by .. Nisha (Cleveland, OH)
I had taken a course in Technical Communication for which this book was a recommended-read. After going through the chapters, I must say that this is an excellent guide for anyone who documents software.

The book takes a task-oriented approach and lists some great pointers. It gives you a step-by-step process for analyzing users, learning a software program, and writing the documentation; teaches you the basics of page and screen design, and even helps you understand the software users better.

This is the only *readable*(cover-to-cover) technical writing book that I have come across. Definitely a great buy!

I was required to read this book for a technical writing class. I was amazed that a book that boasts it can teach technical documentation could have so many glaring errors in grammar and spelling. (Maybe that's why so many people don't read manuals.)
While the book does well as a step-by-step approach, most of the information is in other books. I would not recommend this book.

Great in-depth book for the new Tech Writer by .. (Winston-Salem, NC USA)
I got this book through an online cetification class for writing user manuals and reference guides. I never would have found this book had it not been for that class. This book is great in that it takes you through the 7 steps of documentation. I'd recommend this book for those getting started in the technical writing field and those who are senior members. The author also chunks the information in a way that is easily understandable. Great book!

Freshman English has to be a difficult class to teach. How does one teach how to construct a portfolio, the end result of most freshman comp classes, at a level that will help those who need to firm up their basic skills without alienating students with a firm foundation? When faced with this challenge, Dr. Gina Claywell took matters into her own hands and wrote her own guide for students entitled, "The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing Portfolios." This guide clearly and concisely lays out the groundrules for making a portfolio without talking down or talking over students. However, even though the content of this book is very helpful, the layout of the appendices could use some work. Students under much pressure and with little time view the task of constructing a portfolio as an overwhelming monster. However, this book which takes only an hour or two at most to read, helps students banish that monster by explaining step by step in logical manner exactly what is expected. This gives students time to plan each part of the busy portfolio process around their crowded schedules. Directions are straightforward and easy to understand so that no time is wasted looking up words in the dictionary. The tone is enthusiastic without being overly bubbly. Finally, the first chapter actually explains the whole point of the process so that students don't feel like they are wasting their time. The only confusing part of this book is the layout of the appendices. The page is split with Claywell's comments at the top and student papers at the bottom. That's fine when Claywell's remarks fit in the space above the students paper, but it's confusing when they continue to the next page and the reader has to flip back and forth. One example of this can be found on pages 87-89. In conclusion, this book is highly valuable to students who need to construct portfolios. Without it they would be wandering around in the dark.

Claywell walks her readers through the entire process of portfolio writing in an easy to follow plan. First, she provides tips on getting started, and how to avoid procrastination. Next, she takes the student reader through the selection process, the revision, and finally the completed portfolio. By going through the process in this complete manner, the reader, by following the guidelines, will most certainly be able to produce a quality portfolio for his or her class.

The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing Portfolios is an excellent short reference book for anyone writing portfolios. It covers everything that everyone from high school to college to more advanced businesses needs to know to create a distinguishable portfolio. Especially likeable is the fact that it is very condensed. Many people needing to write a portfolio do not have adequate time to sit and read a several-hundred page book to learn everything ever written about a good portfolio. The language is simple and precise, and the book is divided into easily indexed sections. Another priceless feature is that the book includes examples. These examples show the reader exactly what it is trying to get across. It shows good examples as well as bad ones to let the reader contrast the two different styles. All in all, this book is a valuable tool to anyone needing to write a portfolio. I can truly say that if a person follows it exactly, their portfolio will be a very enjoyable one.

The part that was the most beneficial would definitely be chapter 5, "Reflect on the Process." When I began my reflective piece I was confused and a little lost, but this chapter guided me. "Reflect on the Process" gives a portfolio author direction. The Allyn ad Bacon Guide to Writing Portfolios told exactly what to include, what to leave out, and specifically what a teacher would want in a reflection piece. Along with the reflection examples a student can tell the difference between an effective reflection and a non-thought through piece.
