Customer reviews SQL Server Basics by .. Calvin Johnstun () I work with SQL on a daily basis, mostly running queries. I needed a book to fill in all of the holes since I was self taught. This book is a great start at filling in the gaps. It covers everything from the different versions to understanding the design of full-text catalogs. There is also some good material on queries. Great book even if you are not going for a SQL cert.
As Advertised by .. K. Morgan (Spokane WA) This is exactly what you need to study for this test. As it is published by Microsoft, it give you the ability to "think" like Microsoft which is what is needed when taking the test for the MCTS certification in SQL. The test on the CD gives you a chance to find out how much you know and also prepares you for the demanding cert exam.
Good book, but ditch the practice exam by .. Glubert Heiligschleppen (East Coast USA) This thick, hefty book is very thorough and covers MOST of the bases you'll need for the 70-431 exam. There are still some useful details from the SQL Books Online (SQL Server's "help" files) that you should know, but this book gives a good starting point. Reading through each chapter thoroughly and doing every practice lesson will put you well on the road for success at the exam.
Where this book fails completely is the practice test that comes on CD with the book. The questions were very poorly written (sometimes missing vital information required to even discern what area of SQL server the question is supposed to be addressing) and were very dissimilar to the questions on the actual exam.
If you're looking for useful practice for the exam, use another book (like ExamCram) or buy a worthwhile practice test. Or, just take the test itself as practice - it's almost the same price as some of the practice exams on the web. But don't rely on the practice exam in this book - it's a terrible gauge of what the real deal is like.
Extra Content by .. Citizen Pain (Hellifornia, USA) I passed the 70-431 Exam using this book and a few others. I really like Murach's stuff better though.

not a good book to use for a job by .. J. Wanner (Canton, OH) I had to use this book for a class. It has many mistakes and the quizzes at the end of the chapters ask questions that weren't even covered. Everyone in my class including the instructor agreed that this was not a good book. It either barely discusses or doesn't even cover things that the quizzes ask you about. I am going to find another book to study from before I even think about taking the test. The labs were terrible also, some of them couldn't even be completed as set up by the book. I wouldn't even waste my money on this.

Customer reviews Study Guide Only!!!! by .. Bryce P. Hinds (Orange, CA) After reading this book, I felt it was lacking in details and possibly had more than a few errors. Although it is a study guide, with some good challenging practice questions, I can not help but emphasize for a few dollars more you could get a better study guide that would be far more useful and prepare you better.
Average Study Guide by .. Pramod Panasa (Hermitage, TN United States) I would recommend using this book in conjunction with Microsoft 70-431 preparation guide and Measure UP's or Self Test Software's preperation and practice tests. Its hard to pass SQL 2005 depending only on this book (unless you have some experience working with SQL 2005). Good for quick final review before exam too.
Aimed to be a 5 stars. Got 4. by .. Kin M. Hui (addison, tx) I've been using ExamCram since Windows NT 4. :) Not all of them are impressive. This one is the same.
This is a good last book for quickly reviewing the key concepts to pass the exam. If the topics, such as Service Broker, XML, etc, are new to you and you have read the topic else where, you will appreciate how much the author has condense everything to the basic. It reminds me of the "cheat sheet" at work someone showed me.
Don't get me wrong this is NOT the only book to use to prepare the exam. When I say quickly reviewing, it took me under 30 minutes to finish chapter one because it is easy for me. But, it was snail pace for me on couple new features from sql 2005. To average readers, I think 1 solid day will be the bare minimum to review using this book. I wish author can share more mnemonic to help sponge up all these new stuffs. :)
ON the plus side, ch7, subtitle: "Activity Monitor For Here and Now". really speak out what Activity Monitor does!
On the neg side, I don't like the style of writing. To me, tech book written in present tense with action words is preferred. Also, it was "wordy". May be it is just me.
now for the technical correctness, the following are things that aren't entirely correct.
ch4, question 2, nodes() and value() can both be the answer.
ch5, Creating a Queue, ALTER QUEUE example used CREATE.
ch6, While describing FORMAT option and how it works, it ends with "The default behavior is NOFORMAT, and the media header is not written." So, a FORMAT option has default behavior of NOFORMAT? This is not clear.
ch 10, q 2, IN is a possible answer when used with NESTED query.
q3, the choice (a) should have said CLR User-Defined Type, which is different than the plain-o UDT.
ch 10, q20, can two jobs with different schedules need be scheduled with one schedule?
Mirror is on the exam and detailed steps was asked.
The prospects.xls mentioned in the book is missing. where to download it? where is the errata?
The exam has simulation which requires much hands on experience. One will easily fail if this is the only study material.
Overall is a good book, it is destined to be a 5 stars. It is hammered down by a few , yet, important errors. 4 stars.
Concise exam preparation...only... by .. Matthew Bryde (Australia) As mentioned in previous reviews, this book is purely an exam preparation guide. If you are planning on sitting the 70-431 exam, this book is a worthwhile resource. It ignores irrelevant (non-exam) material and contains a few sample test questions extremely similar to ones found in the actual exam (which is what you're after).
If you are planning on becoming a proficient SQL Server DBA, you will need to look elsewhere. However, for what it is intended to achieve, I give it 4 stars!
Good Starting Point by .. A. Kenneth Webster (Charlotte, NC) This book was a good starting point, but I wouldn't suggest taking the exam after only studying it. I don't know what exam the author took, but there was a lot of stuff on mine that wasn't even alluded to in this book.
I've been a SQL Server programmer/admin for 10 years, so I went into this thinking my knowledge would just need a little brushing up. Breezed through the book and the sample tests and thought "This is going to be easy!" Wrong!
Given the MS 70-413 test is like all the other MS cert tests in that it is as much about getting past the trick questions as knowing anything practical, this book's example questions are waaaay too easy. The subject matter is extremely light weight, too.
Didn't try Transcender, but had coupons for MeasureUp and SelfTest preps. If I had it to do over, I'd devote most of my time to the SelfTest product. Its level of trick questions and general difficulty made it the best for this test. Unfortunately, I discovered this later than I should have.
I passed the test, but it wasn't pretty.

With free online registration: Customer reviews Good for patient newbies by .. R. Sankala (Chicago, IL) I have had it for a month and got thru only half of this book. Good for newbies with lot of detail oriented material. However there's lot of rubbish that one could skip. But its good with a soft copy of the book included in the CD to listen thru using reading software! One suggestion to author is to avoid repeating details and explaining useless scenarios in too much detail.
Good book by .. A. Elchal () Being new to SQL Server, I chose this book as the only reference to study for the exam based on the reviews, and I wasn't mistaken.
It covers all the exam topics in the right order, and it gives enough explanation about each subject that would get you through the exam.
However,if you need to pass the exam, you need to get your hands on some test banks because the review questions in the book won't suffice as the only prep questions for the test.
There is a lot of free stuff on the internet if you yahoo or google 70-431.
I had 47 questions,of which 12 were simulations. I just passed the exam two days ago with no training classes and minimal hands-on, on the first try.
Good luck
Wasted money and time by .. Glen B. West (Atlanta, GA, USA) In preparation for taking the certification test, I purchased this book and the Training Kit from Microsoft Press. As I was planning to take several certification tests, I wanted to find out which was better: Microsoft's training materials or third-party materials. I flipped a coin to see which I would start with, and this book "won".
I studied it over a period of weeks. I passed the included electronic exam with the book. Time to move on to the second book, right? So I decided I would take the test included with the Microsoft kit. If I passed it, I would know that I didn't need to spend the weeks studying that one, and could proceed directly to the certification test. Of the first 10 questions on the Microsoft Training Kit test, I got 2 right, and had absolutely no clue on 6 of them. They were not covered at all in this book.
Getting over my frustration at wasting my time, I found the Microsoft book "cleaner" in that it had less errors and the test questions actually covered their lesson material more thoroughly. After some topics in the Study Guide, I had lots of questions about how it really worked. The Microsoft book answered most (not all) of them, and had test questions covering the Guide's unexplained non-answers.
I still have not finished the Training Kit, but at 35% of the book read, I have increased my score on their trial test from 20% to 50%. The trend implies that by the time I finish the book, I should be over the passing grade.
The Guide (this book) glosses over, with glancing explanations, several complex topics such as messaging/queueing and jobs. I did find that it was better than the Kit (Microsoft) on the Security chapter. The electronic test in the Kit has many more questions, and it looks like they are more structured like certification exam questions. The Guide's questions are all select one (radio-button) or check-all-appropriate (toggle-boxes). The Kit had those, plus drag-and-drop order of steps questions (take these 7 steps, which ones -in order- do you need to accomplish this task). If I remember the exam simulators correctly (this may be inaccurate), the Guide randomly selects from 95 questions, and the Kit from 195.
I have to say: Don't waste your time. Buy the Microsoft Press Training Guide for this topic.
Great book, poor practice tests. by .. BGunn (Louisville, KY) I just passed this test at Microsoft TechEd on my first attempt. The book is well organized and covers all the basics of the exam. My test included 47 questions,35 multiple choice and 12 simulations. The practice exams that are included with the book are horrendous and will not prepare you for the test. Do not rely on them. The book will give you all the basics but you will need to know how to apply them to real world examples. It's not enough to know about snapshots and replication, you'll need to know how to implement them in the most effective Microsoft way. I do recommend this book because it will help prepare you for the test but it's not enough on it's own to pass the test. Good luck.
It worked for me by .. JRB (Iowa) This is my first Microsoft certification so I wasn't 100% sure how to approach preparing for it. My knee-jerk reaction was to buy a book and do all of my learning from just the book. I found myself reading at night and then during the day (while working) I would try and apply what I had read the previous night to what I was working on that day. Without realizing it I was really just using the book to guide my hands-on learning.
Having said that, the book did a very good job of introducing the exam topics, making note of important topics (HINT: This will probably be on the test), and chapter review questions. I felt the review questions were fairly similar in style to the 70-431 multiple choice question. The practice test's simulation questions are a little buggy, I don't think I could ever answer any of them, but it wasn't that big of deal since I use SSMS everyday. I thought the web content was pretty good, videos, and the second practice test but it is very difficult to navigate to the material. I almost gave up looking for it but somehow I did find it.
I beleive that you could pass the test just by using this book (or any other book) but I think that you should really do the majority of your learning with hands on experience. I do reccomend this book to aid your studying, it worked for me.

Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file. Customer reviews Light on the subject by .. TLAW_DBA (Montreal, QC Canada) I have been using this book to improve my knowledge on SQL Server 2005 but I found this book to be very light on the subject. I am using a second book (microsoft version) as supplement and this one is published by Solid Quality Learning
Overall, this book can be used as starting point
Don't even bother with this book by ..
The worst MS certification book I've ever read by .. mtgcsharpguy (California, USA) This is the worst Microsoft certification (not by Microsoft, but about Microsoft certifications) book I've ever read. It's filled with typos, incorrect answers, and just plain wrong information. For example, in explaining the rules for creating indexed views, "sp_dboption 'ANSI_NULLS', true" will not work. That's the incorrect syntax. The DB name must be included. Another problem I found that was extremely time-waisting are in answers which were calculation-based. For example, in the author's attempt to answer correctly regarding several questions about calculating the hard drive space and DB size requirements, he fails by providing wrong answers or answers based on different calculations not specified in the book. I find these types of errors in every single chapter!
Ultimately, I decided to trash this book and buy another one. I should've checked the ratings before buying this. That teaches me to think before buying.
A reasonable effort - more than just exam prep. by .. Matthew Bryde (Australia) This book's intention is to prepare the reader as best as it can to pass the Microsoft 70-431 exam. It covers all the relevant topics and appears to be a great resource in doing so. However, I have a few concerns.
First the positives: The book is well balanced with theory followed by practical exercises. Each chapter ends with a summary of what was just covered, what level of knowledge is expected for the exam followed by 20 sample test questions. The practical exercises are valuable in that they familiarise the reader with HOW to accomplish the objective hands on using SQL tools. After completing this book my knowledge of SQL Server 2005 increased dramatically.
Now the negatives. This book is meant to help prepare for an exam. It introduces the material to be examined on in the chapter body but when it comes to the test questions at the end of each chapter, often the questions test knowledge not covered in the book. This really defeats the purpose of what this book is meant for. Either the chapters need more material or the test questions go beyond what is required in the actual exam.
Having just completed the exam, I found the material covered in this book goes well beyond what the exam covers. e.g. I spent time memorizing how to calculate the size of a table and there was nothing in the exam on this. As someone preparing for the exam, this was a waste of my time. As a DBA - it was valuable. So it depends on why you purchase this book as to how good it is. If they removed all references to the 70-431 exam, this book would be a good general resource.
Further negatives: The book could also do with an editor to correct repetitive paragraphs. There are also cases where the answers to the end of chapter questions are incorrect. The explanation is correct, but the ABCD choice given is obviously a typo. This could lead an unsuspecting reader to assume the wrong answer in their learning.
Other than the problems highlighted, the book overall delivers a good effort in exposing the reader to the topics required to be learnt in order to pass the exam. I found the positives outweighed the negatives. I consider it to be a worthwhile resource for anyone preparing for this certification. But know upfront it contains errors, and a LOT of material not required for this exam - making this a less than perfect or ideal resource to study exclusively.
Good practice questions, sloppy proofreading by .. MaxConcrete (Dallas, TX) I'm about two-thirds of the way through this book. Especially in the early chapters there were numerous and frequent typesetting errors/typos, including in the practice questions. This was annoying. The practice questions tend to be challenging so they really help you dig in and learn the material.
I have found that the basic instructive text does not provide answers to all the practice questions in the book (most questions are covered in the book, but not all). You will need a supplementary reference like the SQL Server online books. As you reach some of the more difficult material, such as the service broker, the text seems to move quickly over a lot of material. Combining this book with SQL Server Books Online or another reference seems to be the best.
Overall I would say this book is better than average. But I have not compared it to other offerings and I have not taken the certification exam.

Customer reviews A well written exam guide, and a good reference as well by .. Justin (San Antonio, TX) I'm just about finished my MCITP: DBA Certification on SQL 2005. So far I've done 70-431, and 70-443. I've been working with SQL Server for a number of years now, and I've recently switched over to a full time DBA position.
I read this book in about 2 weeks, and did the exam on the third week. I managed to get 910 on the exam, out of 1000. As 700 is the passing grade, I'm more than satisfied with anything over 900. Along with some kind of practice testing, this book is adequate study material. I suggest you have a lab in place so you can do the practices and test out the software for yourself. Besides just being a study guide for a certification exam, I've found myself referring back to this book several times, and it has a permanent spot on my book shelf at work. With that said, I can safely say I recommend this book to those looking to take the 70-443 exam.
Good luck!
Great Books by .. Talal A. Alsubaie (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) It was a very helpful book.
I think it is a great book even if you are not applying for the certificate. It helped me in my work, certificate, and personal SQL Server 2005 knowledge.
I would recommend this book for every one who is looking for a SQL Server 2005 book.
Good job despite the negative I've seen here by .. Ever Learning (TX United States) I just passed my test in the high 800's using this book- I'd venture to say it is important to do the labs and use any on-line references you can to help you; I use CompTIA's IT Pro 24x7 book library myself for additional studies. Overall MS press does a good job, it is expected I think to do the labs and practice tests is you want to succeed. A good background in Vista would be most beneficial as well to gather a thorough understanding of hwo it works and why.

I am always wary of online ordering but gave it a go, saved me $160 min. I was kept fully informed all the way. My items were ordered July 24, shipped quickly and arrived in Australia, on my desk smack on the estimated arrival time of July 31st. I am very impressed !! I will absolutely be using Amazon's service again. The packaging was sufficient and the contents were not damaged in any way. Again, great service guy's. As for the books, time to get stuck into some study.

Customer reviews A Certification Star! by .. J. Shumaker (Myrtle Beach, SC) After having completed Microsoft's MCAD certification, I am using this text along with the Tom Carpenter text to prepare for MCTS and MCITP certification. Though I haven't taken the exam yet, the material appears to be covered in a thorough and in-depth fashion. Yet, it does not get bogged down in unnecessary detail.
Excellent book!
All you need to pass the MCITP Database Developer by .. T. Rodgers () Well written and in depth, this book should cover everything necessary to pass these tests.
I have two complaints:
1) The book is laid out functionally for SQL Server, not for each test. So, for example, when you are studying for the 70-442, it may involve a portion of chapter 3, 4, 5, and 8, but all of 12 and 13. All this information is entwined with the stuff for the other tests.
2) You choose to only take one of the tests on the CD. For example - you couldn't say just test for the 70-441 test. I found the CD questions less useful than books dedicated to one test because of this.
These are minor complaints though, and I'm not really sure the issues can be avoided to begin with. Don't let them stop you from using this as your resource to pass these three tests.
Passed all 3 exams by .. Mike (New York, NY United States) For the 431 exam, I used the (Tom) Carpenter book as my primary study guide and this book as a side reference. My main reason for purchasing this book is for the next two exams (441,442). After taking the 431 test and looking up some questions I guessed at in this book, I regret not using this book as my primary study guide. This book seems to point out the exact information needed to get through the test. I look forward to using it for the next two exams. Note that the author of this book is the technical editor for the Carpenter book.
Update to previous review:
I just passed both exams (441 & 442) without difficulty and with plenty of time remaining (each exam took about 2 hours). This is definitely the book to use for these exams. The topics and sample questions are on target with the actual test. Be sure to review the topic list for each exam in the front of the book before taking the test. The 'what you need to know' section at the end of each chapter is not always accurate. Also - the explanation of cascade deletes is incorrect in the book.
Just what I needed by .. Mike Berry (Georgia) The end-of-chapter exam questions were perfect for helping me know what I know and what I don't know. I already passed the 70-431 and 70-441 exams and the questions I looked at in the back of the chapters hit the knowledge needed to pass these exams.
Unfortunately I failed the 70-442 exam before this book was released. However, after reviewing the end-of-chapter exam questions, I saw exactly what I needed to brush up on. I spent several days in a marathon study session doing the exam questions in the back of each chapter for the 70-442. For anything I missed, I studied the material in the chapter. In addition to learning what I needed for the exam, I also learned a couple things I didn't know about in SQL Server 2005. I then took and passed the 70-442.
This book was just what I needed. I only wish I had it before I took the 70-442 the first time.

Customer reviews Excellent Resource for 70-447 Upgrade Exam by .. Brad Blackmon (Santa Clara, CA) I used this book as my primary study/refresher resource to prepare for (and pass) the 70-447 upgrade exam. If you are an MCDBA on SQL 2000, and looking for a resource to for the MCDBA upgrade exam, this is the perfect resource! Very clear, concise coverage of all the exam topics. Each chapter has a bullet list listing the topics covered in each exam. Although the 70-447 exam isn't specifically targeted, you can approximate it by combining the 70-443 and 70-444 topics.
Excellent guide by .. D. Bell (Virginia, USA) This book was well organized and helped me pass the 431 exam within a month of receiving this book.
Fantastic Resource! by .. wgh (NJ) This is a great book! It is very well written and the material presented in a consitent and logical manner.
Some of the material I knew before picking up this book. Since this would be my first MS cert, I read every section of the book. For the topics I already knew, I was impressed by how well Darril boiled the material down to the essence, the central point that you needed to learn. I was hoping that he'd do the same for the areas I did not know. I passed all three tests and this book was the reason.
Read every page. Do every hands-on example. Review the exam tips and you'll not only pass the test but actually be able to do the work.
It delivers what it promises. by .. Alberto Gemin (New York City, USA) PREMISE: I am not yet over the obstacles (certification), I am just studying on this book, so I cannot say whether the book has helped me pass the exams or not.
HOWEVER, judging from other certifications I achieved and the relative study books, this one will work, because it seems pretty comprehensive and detailed.
It is a well-organized book, the pace is just right (and makes me think why one would want to read other books totaling 2000 pages or more to reach the same goal) and it gives tips and hints that I am sure will be valuable.
The plus is that you can read it to learn about SQL Server 2005. It gives you a very good overview, and you feel that you are spending your time learning something.
As a reference book it is quite superficial, i.e. it does not really expand much in any topic. This is fine though, if you are thinking of buying this book as a reference think again. That is not what is advertised.
Four out of five stars in my opinion is be the best rating for a certification study guide: you cannot really make a certification guide something "special", so this type of books hardly ever gets five stars.
However, there are two drawbacks that made me throttle back to three stars:
Firstly, some of the answers to the end-of-chapter questions are wrong. They are easy to spot though, typically they start with "Correct Answer: C" (wrong) then they go on explaining why B is the correct answer.
Secondly, the writing style is not exceedingly good. At the beginning it was just a little awkward to see the way some sentences are put together. Now that I am past the first half it is becoming somewhat annoying, and in some instances a little confusing.
I do not blame the author: I think he did a very good job (nobody expects a SQL Server expert to write beautiful English prose, and lots of it). However, another pass at editing could have made this book much more enjoyable.
Great Books for Testing or Reference by .. A. Nielsen (Silicon Valley, USA) This is the book I've been waiting for. Not only does the book have good explanations about many of the testable concepts, but the exercises have been great in showing me exactly how things work. As an example, I didn't really understand database mirroring, but the high availability strategies chapter included exercises where I was able to implement and configure a database mirror. After completing these exercises, I really understood database mirroring.
