MCSA/MCSE Self-Pace Training Kit (Exam 70-290) 4 by .. Robert Chambers (Tennessee Usa)
It goes in better depth with hands on labs to work with while you learn or fine tune for the test.

MCSE course 3 by .. Hornoiu (usa)
This book is a little strange organized(chapters order) and some exercises cannot be completed due to additional configration steps needed that were supposed to be done in prior exercises, but they were omitted. Not to mention there is no chapter for GPOs.

Easy to understand 4 by .. U. Rivera ()
Great written book, easy to understand and if you are new into windows 2003, then this book will be a good way to begin with. Then, if you want to pass the 70-290 exam in your first try please do practice, practice while reading it.

Fantastic 5 by .. T. F. Keyes (Orlando FL)
This product is far superior to the proscribed Microsoft course books that you will get in a classroom setting. I basicly tossed them aside and concentrated on using this before I took my exam. Guess what, I passed with flying colors! Take this book and run, It's the best source out there.

Excellent Book 5 by .. IT Professional ()
This is an excellent book that will prepare you for the exam. I used it as my only source and passed the test on the first try. The 70-290 is a very easy exam but regardless of that the book prepares you very well.

You're better off buying the Microsoft Press book! 1 by .. Ray D. Ator (Seattle, WA)
This is a great book if you are taking the Microsoft Official training in a classroom. However, the book falls flat if you are studying at home because you will need three computers running Windows 2003 Server and one of them has to be configured as a Domain Controller. On top of that, you will need all the batch files and scripts that are only included on the instructor disc. Unfortunately, the instructor disc is NOT included with this book.

So, to reiterate, you cannot do the labs in this book without the purchase of three machines or the purchase of one machine running virtual server running three virtual Windows 2003 Server sessions.

Last but not least, I found the Microsoft Press book (70-290 exam prep) to have over 50% more material than this book had. And so I don't know how anyone can pass the exam by using this book alone. I passed the 70-290 exam using the MS-Press book and the accompanying Exam Cram book.

I used these books as a secondairy source of information 4 by .. M. Bakker (Holland)
I've done an semi instructer led classroom training, where I recieved the Microsoft official Course books (MOC) aswell. I used these books to lookup the subjects that weren't covered in the MOC book like load ballancing and clustering.
Also after the training with the MOC was finished I used this book to read up about the subjects I failed in the test exams, because this book has a different way of explaning things.
I did the exams about 8 weeks apart and I passed every single exam without much trouble.

Want MCSE? This is the best way to get it. 5 by .. Hashem Ouaida ()
Absolutely Brilliant! Get your MCSE by buying this book. Who better to teach how to pass the exam then the people who designed the exam.

Great way to buy these books 5 by .. Sean S. Harris (Sacramento, CA USA)
If your going MCSE this book pack is the best way to go. While the discount vouchers are lower then what I can normally get searching online the books themselves are great. Get it from the people that made the teset. This is hands on practical learning complete with a demo good for half a year!

These Are Great 5 by .. A. D. Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii)
I don't know how I'll fare on the exams, but these books are easy to understand, well laid out, and thorough. If you follow the exercises, you can't help but learn the material well.

Microsoft is finally getting it right. These "Blue Books" used to really suck before. My skepticism has been put to rest.

MCSE study material 5 by .. W. Hodson ()
arrived very quickly & in great condition - many thanks!!
Also heaps cheaper than buying here in NZ.

Pretty solid, but I have a few quips. . . 4 by .. itnAAnti (Reno, NV, USA)
I have MCSA in Windows 2000, and I work daily with most aspects of Server 2003. The upgrade (MCSA 2000 -> 2003) exam was recently retired, so I am taking the 290 and 291 to upgrade. I read this book in 2 days, and passed the test with a 960. (700 is required to pass). If you already know Server 2003 - this book very quickly and easily will fill in any gaps in your knowledge. I found the actual test to be quite a bit easier (mostly, just much less specific) than the sample tests in the book.

My major quip has to do with typos. They were so prevalent that I started underlining them and marking the pages. There wasn't a single chapter that I didn't spot at least one, sometimes two or three(!!) typos. They were all relatively benign, but there were some annoying typos in sample questions and answers. In one case, the question didn't specify how many answers to select (most tell you if you should mark more than one answer, or "all that apply") but then the answer key had two answers. Another question had the exact opposite; the question asked you to mark two answers, but the key only had one answer listed.

Overall, while I was reading the book I was annoyed by it, but my test score was the highest I've ever had, so apparently despite its shortcomings, the book works.

Passed with this as my main study guide 4 by .. T. Carleton (Orange, CA United States)
I used the Exam Cram series to pass my SQL tests some years back. I'm finally starting to update my MCSE and purchased the exam crams for 290 and 291 (I haven't opened the 291 book yet). There are a handful of typos and mistakes (AGUDLP is referenced once in the wrong order) but nothing you'd miss if you have used the product before. The key is what others have said -- its a cram guide for the test, not a book on Windows 2003. If you have experience with the product, this will help you pass. If you are new to Windows 2003, you'll need more than this book.

For example, command-line utilities like csvde, ldifde, dsget, dsquery and the like are covered along with descriptions of when to use them and what they do. Instead of printing out every switch and usage for each utility, it simply shows you how to get help (dsget /?). If you don't take a moment to check the syntax or don't understand concepts like piping ("dsquery user -name Tim* | dsget user -title") you might miss a question or two.

Features I never use like Volume Shadow Copy and NTBackup (thankfully backup isn't part of my duties) were covered well enough and where the book fell short on a subject I just supplemented the material with a quick google query. Thankfully there wasn't much of that.

The book does have gaps -- the two tests at the end of the book asked questions that weren't even covered in the book (again, quick google query to the rescue). The book includes a link to online tests which were only valid for 14 days or something like that but it did cover items the book didn't. I do recommend at least taking one of the online tests to prepare you for the actual test as it will teach you to look for key words to limit choices for right answers (volume instead of disk, etc...). Neither of these resources prepared me for the simulations when I took the test, but that's to be expected. Its a cram guide, not a class.

Not a good resource 1 by .. Josh D. Gregorio (Tucson, AZ)
This book is not a good resource for studying for 70-290. It covers a lot of material but leaves out all of the little details that are on the actual test. Unless you already know server VERY well and are just brushing up on a few general topics this book will not help you pass the test.

The sample questions and practice tests are nothing like the Microsoft test. The book's questions are short and simple. The actual test is made up of scenarios and trick 'gotcha' type questions.

The book assumes you have too much background to be useful to a beginner. It is too general and simplistic for someone with experience. Not really sure who (if anyone) would benefit from this book.

Great Book for MCSE 5 by .. Raul Santos (Staten Island, NY United States)
this book is direct and too the point. Will prepare you to pass the exam and has a many tips and info.

Another good study guide but... 4 by .. Ever Learning (TX United States)
I'd combine it with other resources available. Personally I used this in conjunction with MS Press book on 70-290 and the Sybex book. Using all 3 you can;t go wrong. Exam Cram is good up to a point, do all the quizzes at the end of each chapter, it'll help reinforce what you should've learned from the first two. I used this one last to round off my learning. Can't say enough about study study study. It'll pay off in the end.

Pretty good, not thorough enough 4 by .. Ever Learning (TX United States)
Always use 1-3 items like this when studying for any Microsoft test, never rely upon one but let one build upon the other and definitely DO the practice tests, the more prepared you are the more you'll be at ease taking the test.

70-290 review 3 by .. Dirk C. Coe ()
I took the test and failed it. I don't feel that this book went into enough depth on several issues. I have since purchased materials put out by Microsoft and hope to have better luck.

Outstanding Hands On Product 5 by .. Jacob P. Lavender (Germany)
As many of us IT pros tend to be, we're hands on learners. I bought this in conjunction with the MS press book. By all means, this product by far exceeds the knowledge one is capable to gain from a book. It was filled with hands on exercises. In addtion it also showed screen shots in conjunction with the statement referring to it whereas the MS press book would often times have me refer to a page 3 pages back/forward. I don't find it very inviting to continually have to flip pages to see screen shots. The MS press book didn't trully provide hands on practice as well. As many might agree, to truly understand IT products, a solid foundation of hands on experience is required; this is suggested within the requirements for taking the MS certificate exams. I also found this book to be very useful as a resource within the work environment and keep it on the shelf for quick access. I would encourage all who want to pass the MS cert exam or simply to gain a further understanding of W2K3 Server to read this book and follow the exercises. I have already purchased other books from the Exam Prep line to complete the MCSE course and will continue to do so for other tests I intend to take.

Very good study material 5 by .. Jason M Ritenour ()
I have over 10 years of professional IT experience, and I finally started working on getting MCSE certified a couple months ago. If you're looking for a good study guide for the 70-290, I highly recommend this book. I had originally began studying with the official MS Press book for 70-290, but I felt there were a lot of areas that were glazed over and not explained adequately. The Exam Prep book is much better - everything you need to know is clearly outlined and broken down very well. I've used several of their books for other certification tests, and quite frankly, theirs are easily the best in the industry in my opinion.

Second Edition, Includes SP2 and R2 5 by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV)
As the title clearly states, this book is on preparing to take the 70-290 exam as part of the certification for MCSE or MCSA. As such, this is not a book on the operating system itself. Indeed it presumes you already have a pretty good idea about Windows Server 2003 before you start this book. In fact, in the opening of the book the author gives you several recommendations for books that cover the OS and how to use it. This book is on making sure that you pass the test.

This book covers the test itself, what you should expect to afind on it, and gives you a very good understanding of those parts of Server 2003 that you should know before going into the testing room. It also includes practice questions and an access key for an online practice test from MeasureUp.

This is the second edition of this book. It is up to date to include Service Pack 2 and Release 2.

Very good study guide if... 4 by .. Ever Learning (TX United States)
You combine it with other methods of study. DO THE LABS- if anything, do the labs in this book as well as the MS Press book. The labs aren't as technical as the MS Press book but nonetheless will definitely help you in remembering steps to take when working with permissions, RAID settings, and so on. I used 3 books for my studies, and felt I got an overall well rounded foundation for taking my exam. I'd suggest NOT using just one book, MS Press is pretty technical, this book lays it out in more easier to understand terms.

Sybex 5 by .. Jeff Walker (LA,Calif)
Sybex technical manuals were recommended to me from an highly experienced instructor. I have to agree, the manual is very comprehensive. Not only does it include the book, but also, review questions, practice test, flash cards. It is also included entirely on a cd so you can read/study on your pc/laptop. I'm very pleased.

Not perfect, but still a great study tool 4 by .. courndog (Hampton Roads, Virginia)
Before you do anything, make sure you are looking at the 2nd Edition of this book. If the top of the book does not say "Updated For Windows Server 2003 R2", then this review will probably not be helpful.

I should probably tell a little about my background. I earned an A.A.S. in Computer and Information Science early in 2005 and I have spent the last year working as a junior administrator for a small company. We have a mix of Windows XP clients and Windows 2000 servers. In addition to passing this test this morning and the Windows XP in March, I also have a couple of CompTIA certifications.

I found the book to be an excellent study tool. They chapters do a pretty good job of explaining all of the topics. The practice tests were pretty good as well. Some of the questions were a little too simple while others were very similiar to what was on the real exam.

I gave the book 4 stars because while I couldn't have passed the test without it, there were topics on the test that were not covered in the book. There was also a question on one of the included practice exams that was programmed incorrectly; it marked the correct answer as wrong. I would recommend to anyone about to take to test to use this book as a guide, but I would also set up a test server and do the exercises on a real machine. That's really the only way you can practice for the simulation questions.

Another good one from Sybex 4 by .. CyberGuy (Carolina, Puerto Rico)
This book is a very good guide if you are looking to take the 70-290 exam. The topics covered align with what is covered on the exam but as always, you should use several sources when preparing for an exam.

A great book, but you will need more references to pass the exam 4 by .. Daniel Calbimonte ()
Sybex books are usually my favourite books for the exam.
The book is easy to understand and to read. It contains useful tips and tries to cover most of the topics required.

For this exam, my favourite book is the Syngress book, but after that it is the Sybex book. This book is the best book for the SUS chapter. It has great information for IIS, terminal services and printers.

Unfortunately the questions included are different than the exam.
I recommend to use practice tests like transcender or boson.

It is a really hard exam, if you want to learn and not to pass the exam, this book is recommended.
I recommend this book for beginners and as a reference book.
Experienced users will find some important tips on the book.

Wasted time 1 by .. A. Utkin (Philadelphia, PA)
Teaches you nothing. Fell apart in my hands before I even was finished reading. Very poor editing and writing for that matter. If it was 1/3 of the price would probably give it three stars, for that much money one could expect much more than that.

Does not have the LabMentor Disk 4 by .. Robert J. Boluyt (AZ)
If you are buying this book for a Server 2003 class, be advised that it does not have the LabMentor disk or the passcodes required to log on to the Course LabMentor site.

Well written, easy to understand. 5 by .. goin2games (New Mexico, USA)
This is a great resource for understanding the inner workings of Windows Server 2003. It starts with the very basics, but touches on advanced options as well. It is well written and easy to follow. The review questions at the end of each chapter are great for making sure you understand what has been presented.

Ok, but that's about it 3 by .. John (North Carolin)
I read this book all the way through, did all the problems that I actually had answers for, and, if not for Transcender's exam questions, there is no doubt that I would have failed the 70-290 exam. This book provides questions at the end of each chapter for you to review what you just learned, sadly though, the answers are in the teacher's edition, which you just don't have access to. The section "What You Really Need to Know" does provide answers to the questions, but, some of the answers are wrong, which drove me nuts. As a reference book, this one is great, but as a test prep book, I would have to say find another one. I cannot recommend it for the actual exam.

Great Additional Server 2003 Information 5 by .. D. Kjornes (WI United States)
This text is a great initial or supplement to additional texts about Windows Server 2003. The various discussions and hands-on sections at the end of each chapter enhance understanding about the Windows Server network operating system. Clearly conceived and well done. More concise than the first version.

Good review before test day! 4 by .. J. Steskal (Atlanta)
I would recommend this book to anybody that is about to take 70-290. I would say a word of caution though about this book. It is truly intended to be a suppliment to actual training from either a interactive self-paced class like Test Out or Prep Logic. If you try to pass the 70-290 with this book alone you may run in to difficulty. Also, I would recommend exam insurance from Microsoft if your testing center allows it.

Good Starting Point 3 by .. Jose L. Rodriguez (Riverdale, NY United States)
Passed exam 70-290 this afternoon thanks to the good foundation this book laid for me. However, don't rely too much on the contents of this book for in-depth study and analysis of core components in Server 2003. It just presents the first layer of what you really need to know in order to pass the test.
Instead, use this as a guide to compertamentalize your study strategy as you moved through the more targeted content that other guides may provide you. I strongly recommend complementing this book with either the Transcenders or Testkings (the legal ones!).

This must be great! 5 by .. Samuel Rey (Riverside, CA USA)
I never got around to reading it but I did get to read the handy Caram Sheet found inside the cover. I also took the time to look at some of the questions found in the book and the table of contents. The questions and the content seem to cover the exam very well. I believe this book is sufficient to pass the test. I passed with a score 850.

Good book with easy simultion exam questions 3 by .. Daniel Calbimonte ()
This book is a great way to start studying the 70-290 Exam. It is well organized and tries to cover most of the topics. The book is interesting and useful as a reference book for the real life.

Unfortunately this book does not cover all the objectives for the exam. For example for the SUS topic it contains less than one page of information. For IIS and printers, it is the same problem.
Some other books like Sybex contain an entire chapter !!.
There are some topics with shallow information.

I strongly recommend this book for beginners. With the help of the TechNet and a practice exam (like Boson or transcender), you can pass the exam.

The CD does not contain questions similar than the real exam. It would be great if the CD contained simulation questions and more questions like the real exam.

You'll need more than this book will provide. 3 by .. Trainer (Mpls, MN. USA)
This book is not enough to pass the exam, at least the exam I received. To many holes on security. My test was 1/2 security type questions and needless to say I did not pass. I did have a home test lab and did every lab at least twice. In my lab I had 98, 2k, and XP home and Xp Pro. I do have extended experience in the networking world. I did buy the XP Pro Manual as well and I am equally disappointed. I did purchaced additional manuals to pass the the tests. Exam Cram manuals WERE one of the best.

Nice. Primary book! 4 by .. J.C. ()
This is a good book to have in your collection. These Passport books are great. Gives you enough to pass the test, and then some. I used this as my primary book for the test, plus CBT videos, and test lab in the house. Also throw in a study guide, and practice test, and you should be good. When studying just practice the things you are learning over and over, and you you should be good for the test. This makes a good reference as well.

Best Study Guide on the Market 5 by .. Kat (Dulles, VA United States)
I was introduced to the Passport series while studying for my Network+ exam. Since then I have used the Passport series for 70-270, 70-290 and 70-218, both tests were passed with flying colors. I purchased numerous other books but always come back to the Passport series. Couldn't pass a test without them.

Great book if you have a lot of experience..... 4 by .. sometimes sysadmin ()
I am using the passport series to work on my MCSE. I have taken two exams (70-290 and 70-293)using just this series as guides and have passed both first time. I have been working with NT/AD technology for years so I am looking for concise info concentrated on what I need to pass exams and find these books fit the bill.

If you are new to Windows or networking, these books are not tutorials. They do not provide much hand holding through examples, they are just study guides.

I can only rate the books as four stars because on each exam I took, I was blindsided by a few questions. Things on the exam that the book did not even cover.

However, they do earn a solid four stars for their conciseness. They are relatively short, easy to read and well focused on giving you the information you need to pass. If you have a solid background in the technologies already, they will not waste your time with tutorials.

All told, I have found them to be excellent study guides. If you are new to Windows, you'll need another series.

supplemental only 2 by .. L. G. Poe (NEWNAN, GA USA)
Do not rely upon this book only. You will be disappointed. Also, the book assumes that the reader already has knowledge of this server. Statements like "spend some time looking at the group policies" are supposed to help. Come on there are over 160 group policies on the 2003 Server. I have taken the 70-290 twice and did worse the second time. The night before I reread most of this book which I don't think helped much. I really haven't found anything that matches the last test that I took (70-290).
I wish that I could find something that matches what Microsoft does on test day.
Don't rely on any one book.

Wonderful Book! 5 by .. Christopher Goltz (Glyndon, MN United States)
There are only a small handful of computer books out of the many dozens I have purchased in my career that I not only wanted to read cover to cover, but have. "Mike Meyers' Windows Server 2003 Certification Passport" is one of them. As someone who uses Windows Server 2003 daily and teaches it to others in a college setting, this book is a refreshing change from the other Windows Server 2003 books on the market. The "Certification Passport" presents its content in a fun format as a "travel guide" to Windows Server 2003. I found that this book expertly crafts the material into something that you were reading because to have to, into something you want to. It injects humor into many topics, and makes material that would otherwise be rather dull, appealing to its readers. Students (and teachers) will find the end-of-chapter questions helpful, but it is the book's writing style, to the point, clear, and interesting, that will make you come back to it again.
