Product Description

About the book--
The title, Aviation and the Law, is an intentional reflection upon the nature of law, for aviation law is but an integral part of all law. Therefore, this book starts from the beginning, to develop for the reader a basic understanding of the law, of its philosophy, and of its structure and due process, before addressing "aviation and the law" per se. The book is assembled in six major sections, the first of which gives definition to law, touches upon notions of justice, fairness, the underlying theories of law, and upon morality.
Section Two addresses criminal law as related to air transportation. Of primary concern are the issues of airport and airline security, air piracy, and other acts of criminal violence. Section Three, is an overview of civil (or tort) law in the field of aviation, focusing upon pertinent issues in their respective specialized areas, and supported by applicable case law. Section Four looks at airports and the role of government. Section Five deals with manufacturers' liability, the transfer of liability through insurance, and liability for accidents, including an overview of the government's responsibility to investigate aircraft accidents and to promote aviation safety. The final section is an introduction to international aviation law, including its historical development, the Warsaw System, bilateral governmental agreements, international competition, and exemplary court cases in this area.
As with previous editions, the purpose of this book is to provide sudents of aviation with a basic understanding of law, of the legal system, and of how the principles of law may be applied to the many aspects of air commerce and air transportation. Added to this latest edition are updates on the federal aviation security provisions since September 11, 2001, expansion in the area of international air law, as well as court cases of note decided since the last edition.

Very good book. Doesn't just center on aviation but begins with basic law. Highly recommend it!

What a cleaverly crafted book 5 by .. FargoKidd (Salt Lake City, Utah)
I'll tell you I never had so much fun reading a book. It nearly brought me to hysterics of laughter. I was laughing so loud it made me cry. Superb mix of prose and gentle words of comfort. I tell you, if you don't go out and purchase this book right now you're going to loose out. I heard that the price is going to jump here real soon. Dr Gesell really knows how to put in plain English the complex world of Airport security. It just makes me sick to think it took this long to discover his writing. My friends in Fargo can't stop talking about this. I'm going to have to look for all of his books, now. Thank you, Dr Gesell. And thank you CAP.

written by an elementary school teacher 2 by .. J. Feldman (Washington, DC)
I took and passed the CISSP this year and found Shon Harris's book to be the worst of the study prep guides. Too verbose, too much information, although the information is factually correct, you can tell through her writing that she did not fully understand the subject material or WHY this material is important to know for the CISSP. The exam is an inch deep and a mile wide. Shon writes her book to be a mile deep and a mile wide, with a few inaccuracies thrown in for good measure!

Save your money and what's more important, save your time! 90% of what's in the book will not be on the test.

Don't expect to learn anything 1 by .. Ian Howson (Sydney, Australia)
I hate to be difficult, but this is an awful, mediocre book.

I'll keep it simple and factual:

- This book is horrendously inaccurate. Some chapters are OK - Crypto approaches 90%. Some are terrible. Telco and Network Security was maybe 30% accurate.

- Shon does not understand a great deal of the material that she is presenting. Examples that stick in my mind are "what is a race condition" and "why do we do processing on a smart card". Tracing the references, it becomes plainly obvious where Shon has paraphrased without comprehending the (very important!) subtleties of the subject.

- A mechanical point, but important nonetheless: when a new idea is explained, it is explained using all of the jargon and assuming all understanding first. Afterwards, the lower-level understanding is filled in. This makes it very difficult to follow - you constantly need to move back and forth to get the full picture.

- It's extremely verbose and conversational. I believe this is inappropriate for a topic area where correctness and precision is crucial. A previous reviewer commented on the jokes inline with the material. I probably missed a lot of the inline jokes, mistaking them for factual errors.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture. I bought the book to get an understanding of where my knowledge was lacking in advance of taking the exam, and it served that purpose. The obvious and consistent factual errors made it difficult for me to actually believe anything, however - I found myself looking things up on Wikipedia (of all places!) when I needed clarification on a topic.

Good Read, But... 4 by .. Rob B (Florida)
Ms. Harris' book is written in a more conversational style than your average technical read, but don't forget you will be tested on the official ISC2 materials. I recommend their book for studying and Ms. Harris' book as a supplement, not a substitute.

Now less than 12 hours away from taking the test, I found many of the post-chapter questions to be not well-formed, though much the same can be said about the ISC2 workbook. It is evident the human factors practioners (those who actually study how to write good questions) have not vetted these.

The CD that comes with Ms. Harris's book is somewhat better. By the way, the 4th Ed. cover has a blue field, not a red one.

Faster Than a Speeding Bullet 5 by .. C. Wallace (Minnesota USA)
Wonderfully quick response and shipping time. Nice to have a request for any comments.

Overly wordy novel on CISSP 3 by .. G. Miller (FT Bragg, NC (SOF))
This book is presented in novel format where huge paragraphs dominate.
People don't mentally store information in paragraph format; they store it in bullets or chunks of data so you first have to read the paragraph, then deduce the bullets for mental storage. It's weird but I think most books are written like this.

There are endless stories about security using sometimes inappropriate metaphors for security which don't always equate to the technology at hand.

Also, the chapters aren't laid out in the 10 Domains covered by the CISSP exam so you have to jump around to go through the domains.

By comparison, the Sybex CISSP book does a worse job because the chapters aren't even named in relation to what the ten CISSP domains are so you have to guess which chapter goes to which domain.

There is good use of graphics but there is a lot of extra information not on the exam so if you're looking for a concise technical review of CISSP exam material, look elsewhere.

PS the Shon Harris videos are as long and drawn out.

Excellent primer covering all digital photography topics 5 by .. New England Yankee (Northern New England)
I have quite a few photography books - virtually all film and film processing related. All of those are looking pretty horribly dated. Even the most basic topics, like exposure and composition take on different implications in the digital world. As just one example, while relationships between aperture and shutter speed haven't changed, the finality of the exposure isn't as critical in digital, you have very different kinds of under and over-exposure considerations for post-processing, you have in-camera options (depending on the sophistication of the camera, of course) for adjustments, color curves, white balance, etc., and the results in terms of exposure artifacts and how you deal with them are just different.

What this means is that a book written for the digital photographer really should not be a re-work of an older film-based work. Freeman's Complete Guide to Digital Photography is written 100% from the digital point of view. It's brief bits of content regarding film cameras, formats, processing, lenses, etc. are only by way of explanation - and often the starting point for explaining why and how they are changing because of digital.

My purchase of this book is the result of a search in order to go back to square one. Like many, I'm late to digital, apart from owning a digital point and shoot camera or two. I wanted a book that didn't rehash what I already know about photography and wanted one that had the right balance of content range and emphasis to get me off on the right footing. Unfortunately, almost every beginner's digital photography book I found suffered from one or more of the following deficiencies: throwaway content (e.g., the history of photography, evolution of digital cameras, too much computer hardware content); film content; superficial coverage; deep coverage on only one or two topics (typically section after section on specific types of subjects such as portraits, landscapes, etc.); dated content (e.g., dead websites, old cameras, PCs, and software); and condescending content that talks down to the reader.

I wanted something that focused on the essence of digital photography. While you can't avoid some of the above, I didn't want it to dominate either. I found the type of coverage I was looking for in this book.

The format initially led me to think it was too superficial. A huge range of topics are presented, typically taking only 2-4 pages each. I picked it up and put it aside several times while comparing other books, finally noticing that content in each section sets you up for content in later sections in a rather subtle way. Some early chapter content on 35mm format and sensors, for example, leads directly to comments on viewfinder and LCD screen changes in a later chapter.

This book covers a lot of ground - cameras & sensors, in-camera processing, exposure, workflow, post processing and software, printing, PC and monitor considerations, file formats, cards (CF, XD, etc.), lenses, stabilization, and a lot more. The format - very brief topical chapters - is easy to read and, again, deceptively simple. The result is a beginner's guide that adds up to more than the sum of its parts.

This book will be first on my recommended list for anyone starting out in digital photography.

Easy reference for photographic techniques 4 by .. C. Hyde ()
Well illustrated explanations of digital darkroom techniques. I checked this book out from the library and didn't get everything out of it even after renewing it several times.

Very good 5 by .. Brittany Galladora (Baltimore, Maryland)
It was shipped earlier than the date listed on the site. Product is in great condition. Completely no hassle!

Excellent book on the structure of ASL 5 by .. melrose (California, USA)
This is an excellent book to understand the meaning of ASL and to analyze it. It is NOT a how to sign book, it is for those who know ASL at an intermediate level at least. It is a very interesting book and covers ALOT of information, but the homework activities included help absorb the information. It challenges your thinking.

I do suggest that you only read this book if you are really serious about ASL. It is a good book for those learning to be interpreters.

This book goes over the structure of ASL such as the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and sociolinguistic structures. It teaches you how to think critically about ASL linguistics so you can have a better understanding of the structure as well as the history of the language, NOT a history of the people who use the language, but a history of the language itself and its changes from as early as the 1960's, by looking into the research linguists have done and are doing.

Advanced ASL Syntax and Structure Book - Not For Beginners 4 by .. Casadejunqueinc (los angeles)
The Linguistics of American Sign Language explains the morphology and syntax of ASL, not so much the 'how' as the 'why.' This book is useful for the advanced student of ASL, but not particularly helpful for a beginner. The authors, all current or former professors at Gallaudet University, explain in great detail the nuances of American Sign Language.

My thoughts 3 by .. Jonathan Fast (Illinois)
This is a very nice book very informative but more what makes up ASL than how to sign ASL. So if you're looking for what makes up ASL this is your book, but if you're looking for how to form complex sentences and how words inflect this isn't it. But I supposed that's my fault for assuming linguistics=syntax. :D

Definitive linguistic compendium 5 by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Written by the team of Clayton Valli, Ceil Lucas (Professor of Linguistics in the department of Linguistics as Gallaudet University), and Kristin J. Mulroney (Assistant Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics as Gallaudet University), Linguistics of American Sign Language is an in-depth reference and resource for intermediate to expert linguistic students, scholars and professionals, now in an updated fourth edition with an accompanying course DVD. The fourth edition of Linguistics of American Sign Language features an entirely revised section on morphology and syntax, the latest research on main categories of verbs in ASL, insight into artistic forms of ASL such as singing, drama, and poetry, 18 new and updated readings, and new suggested homework assignments based on the DVD, and much more. The first half of the text focuses on the nuts-and-bolts grammar and dissection of ASL; the second half is devoted to supplemental readings by a variety of learned authors, discussing nuances of ASL and its usage, variations in linguistic structure, sub-communities of the deaf such as the black deaf community, and much more. Simple black-and-white diagrams illustrate this definitive linguistic compendium and college-level education and consultation reference.

A continous list 2 by .. Alberto Franceschi (Pisa Italy)
Altough complete, updated and deep covering most of the aspect of clinical pathology, exposition of the matter is done in the list form, like a "things to buy" note. It looks like a student's lesson note and the subject is not treated in the usual way a book does, as say with sensed phrases that correlate one to the next following a logical thread. It is more a manual than a book and it is something that is impossible to read one paragraph after the other, and even harder to remember. Anyway it carries a lot of useful information and helped me whenever i needed.

Excellent book 5 by .. Michael J. Adkesson (St. Louis, MO)
In my opinion, the best veterinary clinical pathology book. Great easy to read format. Consise, but providing more than just the basics. Great cases studies in the back that review topics.

The Cart was put before the horse 4 by .. B. W. Goff (Columbia, SC)
Rene Descartes can go to a circle in hades for his mathmatics but his discourse on religion was flawed he had to first prove to himself he existed before he could prove God existed, there is the rub. He is justly regarded as the Father of Modern Philosophy because of the questions and problems he created. He helped to distinquish philosophy from science, which is a saving grace. This is a great addition to any library, since it serves to illustrate the evolution of philosophy in our civilization. I would also recommend Deism In American Thought by Woodbridge Riley and of course the Age of Reason by Thomas Paine.

It is what it is...I recommend a book with more commentary for beginners 4 by .. J. Carey (NC, USA)
The bare translation...with little to no commentary. It's cheap, though.

Rene Descarte 5 by .. Rose L. Savage (Philadelphia, Pa)
This is an excellent book with good reading and meditations to just sit back relax and enjoy.

Readable translation of two seminal works of philosophy 4 by .. bryan12603 (Poughkeepsie, NY USA)
This is a review of the Donald A. Cress translation of Discouse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes.

Philosophers disagree about everything: except about the fact that modern philosophy begins with Descartes. No contemporary philosophers agree with Descartes' positive views. However, Descartes left Western philosophy with a series of puzzles that it continues to wrestle with: how is it possible to know anything? (Descartes' "dream argument" and "evil genius" argument are powerful sources of philosophical skepticism.) What is the relationship between mind and body? (Descartes argues that there is a fundamental metaphysical difference between the two, so they cannot be identical.) Is there some certain, indubitable foundation for knowledge? (Descartes thought that we need one to escape doubt, and that he could provide it.)

Some historical context helps to explain certain features of his writing. In 1521, Martin Luther was excommunicated, beginning the Protestant Reformation and dividing Christianity. Luther encouraged Christians to read the Bible translated into their own languages (e.g., the King James Bible) and use their own individual judgment to interpret it. In 1543, on his deathbed, Copernicus published his book arguing that the sun was the center of the solar system, not the earth (as had been taught by Aristotle). In 1633, Galileo was forced by the Inquisition to renounce his defense of the Copernican hypothesis.

Given the sharp intellectual controversies of his era, it is not surprising that Descartes says he has "realized how numerous were the false opinions that in my youth I had taken to be true, and thus how doubtful were all those that I had subsequently built upon them" (59). Descartes concludes that the only way to escape his doubts is to reconstruct his beliefs using his own reason, rather than relying on traditional views. In this respect, he is somewhat like Luther. However, mindful of what happened to Galileo, Descartes begins the Meditations with a letter to the Faculty of Sacred Theology in Paris, defending the orthodoxy of his views and pleading for their support. In addition, Descartes wrote the Discourse in French (his own vernacular), but wrote the Meditations in Latin (the language of the Church), "lest weaker minds be in a position to think that they too ought to set out on this path" that he has followed (51).

If you are going to read only one work by Descartes, I recommend the Meditations. (However, you might want to quickly read Part 4 of the Discourse first, since it gives an overview of the whole Meditations.) In the Meditations, Descartes decides that, paradoxically, the only way to overcome his doubts is to doubt everything that can be doubted, until he finds something absolutely certain, upon which he can build up knowledge. (Descartes is therefore an epistemological foundationalist.) Descartes notes that his senses sometimes deceive him. Furthermore, for all he knows, he is merely dreaming right now that he has a body and is sitting in a room writing. It is hard to maintain such doubts, so Descartes resolves to pretend that an "evil genius, supremely powerful and clever," is attempting to deceive him at every step of the way. Descartes ends his First Meditation in this pit of uncertainty.

In the Second Meditation, Descartes realizes that, even if he is mistaken about everything, he still has to think to be deceived, and if he thinks, then he exists. (In Part Four of the Discourse, he phrases this concisely as "I think, therefore I am.") Descartes then realizes that, while he can conceive of himself as a thinking thing without a body, he cannot conceive of himself as a body that never thinks. So while he may, in fact, have a body, his body and his mind are metaphysically distinct. (Basically, since he can conceive of body and mind as separate, therefore they are, in principle, separate.) Thus, Descartes is a metaphysical dualist.

In the Third Meditation, Descartes argues that God exists. He gives a version of the ontological argument for the existence of God (defended before Descartes by St. Anselm, criticized after Descartes by Kant, and still later resurrected by Alvin Plantinga). Contemporary readers, even ones who believe in God, are unlikely to find Descartes' argument here compelling, but it is an important part of his philosophy. Descartes argues that, since we know that God exists, and since we know that God is all good, we can be sure that our senses and our reason are not fundamentally deceptive. (Why would an all-good God make us prone to systematic mistakes?)

But the Third Meditation suggests a puzzle: since God created us, and God is all-good, why do we humans EVER make mistakes? Descartes' answer in the Fourth Meditation is that belief requires both the intellect, which simply perceives ideas, and the will, which chooses whether to believe those ideas. So long as we only choose to believe ideas that we "clearly and distinctly" (87) perceive, we will only believe what is true. Error occurs when we precipitately choose to believe unclear or confused ideas. (Part Two of the Discourse describes the methodology Descartes recommends in a bit more detail.) This may seem like a trivial claim, but Descartes is actually arguing for something controversial (and probably false): we can and should withhold belief from anything of which we are not absolutely certain, and so long as we use our minds correctly, we can be guaranteed to never believe anything false.

The Fifth Meditation gives an alternative formulation of the ontological argument for the existence of God, and suggests that some ideas (such as those of mathematical objects) are innate, so that, "when I first discover them, it seems I am not so much learning something new as recalling something I knew beforehand" (88).

Finally, in the Sixth Meditation, Descartes turns to material objects and sensory knowledge. His general conclusion is that "I must not rashly admit everything that I seem to derive from the senses; but neither, for that matter, should I call everything into doubt" (97). In general, Descartes is concerned in this meditation with how we can have a God-given faculty for discovering the truth, yet so often be in error over sensory matters (e.g., the Sun appearing to be the size of a fist).

I do not read French or Latin myself, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of the translation. However, I will say that it is very readable. Furthermore, the selected bibliography is helpful. I do miss three things that were left out of this translation, though. First, Descartes meant for the Meditations to be read along with a series of "Objections" written by his correspondents and "Replies" he wrote in response. Second, perhaps the most insightful critic of Descartes was Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, who raised in correspondence what is still generally considered one of the strongest objections to Descartes' dualism: how can soul and body interact if they are as radically distinct as Descartes suggests? Finally, Descartes' Fourth Meditation emphasizes the distinction between having a property "formally" and "eminently." In Cress's original translation of the Meditations, he has a footnote explaining this distinction. That footnote was left out of this enlarged edition. If these three things were included in this translation, I think I would give it five stars instead of four.

Overly repetitious 1 by .. J. S. Breunig (Princeton)
Descartes seems like the sort of guy who likes the sound of his own voice, not unlike a philosophy professor! He has only a handful of points, a few of them interesting but the majority pure academic fluff, and he spends over 100 pages just reiterating his ideas and logic behind them. It seemed like a modern editor would read the manuscript, and whittle it down to a maximum of 25 pages. I am not surprised that various classes on philosophy only use excerpts of Descartes' work.

I would HIGHLY recommend instead buying an analysis of Descartes' works so that you can alternate back and forth between his original writings and commentary on these writings, as well as responses by other philosophers like Pascal.

The book's engaging, informal style shows students first how to read and analyze a wide range of argumentative texts -- verbal and visual, scholarly and "real world" -- and then how to use what they learn to write their own arguments. Andrea Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz's instruction is fresh, elegant, and jargon-free, emphasizing inclusivity (moving beyond simple pro/con positions), humor, and visual argument to make Everything's an Argument immediately accessible. Students like this book because it helps them see and understand that a world of argument already surrounds them; instructors like it because it helps students construct their own arguments about that world.
