Customer reviews How much do you know? by .. Clifford W. Blasch (Horde SpecOps, USA) When I first wanted to buy this book, the reviews weren't that helpful. Alot of issues with mistakes and proof reading. My background is one of electronics, I have over 100 semester hours in electrical engineering from a major college. So before you buy this book, let me point out some things.
First, this isn't an introductry book for electronics, If your looking for a guide buy something else I highly recommend The Art of Electronics Anyway back to the review:
This book covers several items which I spent several years learning in college all 4 years. It is filled with integration, and other wonderful calculus and physics formulas. If you are afraid of upper level math, don't buy this. It goes WAY beyond introductry courses, and will not explain how or why.
On the other side of the house. If you have a background in Electronics, heavy in theory. If you are alittle rusty or just trying to revive those long dead brain cells, this book is excellent. Yes there are a few mistakes, but as your working the problem, its very easy to spot, missed decimal places etc. I'm currently using this book to prep for the US Postal Electronics Tech Test. I anticipate this will cover everthing I need, with the exception of number conversions, binary to decimal etc. That might be covered, but first glance I didn't see it.
So in summary, if an Integration sign scares you, or If you have watched "Good Will Hunting" and have never seen the symbols he writes on the mirror, or have never heard of Kirchhoff, vectors, Thev Eq, or even Ohms Law don't buy this. If you have seen or done the above, your pretty safe.
I hope this helps.
3500 problems by .. Johannes Kepler (Texas, USA) Honestly, this book should be called "3,500 Problems in Electrical Circuits" - the 3000 problems presented along with the 500 errors in their solutions. Buyer beware - unless you're confident in your circuit skills and just want to solve problems - be careful! This book has incorrect solutions from missing terms to magically appearing factors of 10 to misspellings (even misspelling Newton! which is the equal of scientific sacrilege). Many of the circuit drawings are not even clean CAD drawings but cruder hand drawings...
All of this shows a clear lack of attention, review and editing - so unless you wish to perform these functions, move on! This is the product of a cram session overnighter in order to get a paycheck... The value equivalent of "Britney Spears Guide to Class and Refinement"...
Good book by .. L. Martti (Espoo, Finland) A good book - problems are a bit simple, but when practising calcutating routine skills, they are a great help. Few typos are a nuisance, but they are easy to spot (see the other reviews).
DON'T BOTHER BUYING GARBAGE by .. T. Burtell (Dearborn, MI United States) Really unbelievable... The first two problems have the WRONG answers. 1. "3" megohm is not equal to "2" M Ohm. Besides, there's an "a" after the "g" in megaohm. Geez, two typos in the first question. 2. .000000001 F = 1.0 nanofarad, not picofarad as the writer claims. How can anyone trust his answers on the difficult questions when he gets the easy ones wrong? If the problem is with typos then get a proofreader before it gets to the printer. Electrical engineering is a difficult subject as it stands. Circulating books like this makes it still harder to master the subject!
Very Helpful by .. Mark Goodell (Richmond, VA USA) I wish that all study guides were as useful as this one. In each topic area the author starts with simple problems, so the student can get the hang of what is going on, and progresses to the more complicated. I used this guide a number of years ago when I was taking undergraduate electrical engineering classes, and I still think of it as an important friend.

Product Description A step by step "how-to" on the construction of a log cabin profusely illustrated with over 300 photographs plus several line drawings. This book was written and designed for the "average" person who has the desire to build a log cabin but not much knowledge. Modern tools are used and everything but logs (including roof) were purchased and yet the cost of construction was kept right at $3,000. Common problems are shown being solved using not much more than common sense. From trees in the timber to the final chinking, this book is designed to get the reader out there and building. Customer reviews Good by .. Nette (Lexington, KY) I bought this book for my dad for Christmas. He's planning to build a primative cabin next year and found this book inspirational!
not so good by .. () This book, written in a so-called 'laid back style', is even hard to read for a foreigner like myself. Quoting from memory, a typical sentence might read like this: 'Put lotsa goop all over and a coupla nails here and there and you're alright'. In another place the author says he 'saw a list of the good woods for building log cabins once, but he lost it'. That's a little too laid back for my liking. The pictures on the cover are good, but on the inside they are ugly black-and-white photos with maybe two shades of gray. The author says he will 'cover notching in depth later', but that chapter must be missing in my copy. All I could find about notching could be summarized by 'scoop out the wood with the chainsaw'. He guides you through the mistakes he made in building the cabin (which weren't few). That may be helpful to avoid pitfalls, but a better idea would probably be to buy a book written by someone who really knows how to build a log cabin. "If I can build a log cabin, you can too" says the author, and I believe him.
A Helpful Guide for Those with Serious Ambition by .. Dr. Michael Trend (MY MOUNTAIN HIDEOUT NEAR LAS VEGAS, NEVADA) I get a kick out of John McPherson's books. They're self-published guides that can teach you almost-forgotten crafts, such as how to tan deer skins with brains and ashes. This book will show you how to build a log cabin SHELL (be forwarned) using simple hand tools and back-breaking effort. To be fair, McPherson apparently considers a cabin complete when the log walls are up and chinked, and the roof is up and shingled. No doubt he doesn't need electricity or indoor plumbing. So, there's not anything here about how to FINISH a cabin--you know, silly things like wiring. This book is an incredible guide on how to do about two-thirds of the work required to have a liveable cabin. I've lived in dwellings like the one he made, and it can get real thin, after a while. What is really neat about this book is that it does show you how to erect a cabin in the old style. The most useful parts concern safety. Listen to the man so you won't get squashed like a bug, OK? For those of you who are really determined, this book will be extremely valuable, since it is clear, practical, and very well-illustrated with about 300 photographs. For the rest, just read the book in your easy chair while drinking a cold bottle of beer, and then go back to watching a ballgame on the telly.

It's all good by .. () John, you're writing style is unique and exquisite. I read every book of yours that I can get my hands on! They contain good tips and good advice not only about your projects but about life as well. Every time I read one of your books, even a page in your book, I come away with a good feeling inside. Scott Sylvestri (Old Greenwich, CT) The book arrived in as good or better condition than I expected. I would definitely buy from this seller again.
Getting back up to speed with Calculus by .. Michael P. Quinn (Lewisville, TX United States) I went back to school after a 8 year break, and was very worried that my calculus would be a long forgotten skill. Between this book and forgotten calculus, I returned to school confident that I was not going to be blindsided by applied calculus.
A good PRACTICE guide - not a way to first learn the topic.... by .. Ernie () I bought this book and several others to help my daughter with her AP calculus. Along those lines, this book is not very useful as the AP examiners have gone off and deviated from the traditional bread and butter calculus topics (volumes of revolution, techniques of integration, related rates, max/min/inflection points, etc.). They have fallen in love with calculating averages, the fundmaental theorem of calculus, and their calculators (see my other reviews). So if your buying this book for that purpose, it won't really help as this book covers only traditional techniques and topics without the need of a calculator.
HOWEVER, for a supplement to traditional class material, this is a great book. I agree with the prior reviewers that this is not a book that will teach you calculus from the start - you need to already know how to take a derivative and integrate, what is meant by a volume of revolution, related rate, and so forth. However, if you want EXCELLENT scores, practice is the key and this book gives you a lot of practice. After a while, you will realize that there are only so many variations on a particular topic that can be tested and they keep coming up over and over again (I orginally took calculus in the 1980's and ran across the same problems).
In summary, if you need to first learn the basics of the material, this book is not for you. If you already know the basics and want practice on the bread and butter topics, this is an excellent way to do so. I doubt that your instructor will give you problems not covered in some fashion in this book.
Be very careful! by .. J. MOLDOVAN () If you want a reference book, this ain't it. Nor a textbook. You must understand the concepts before you even open the volume. It would then be a great help in applying your knowledge to real-world problems.
I say, "would" because the numerous typos and mistakes make it a dangerous tool to use. Some errors are obvious (if annoying), some will mislead and puzzle you and some, well... just pray.
I give it a three because it may still be useful. Just be careful how you use it!
Save your money by .. Rollis (Chapel Hill, NC, USA) Every year a new class of desperate students buy into the Schaum no-help books. Save your money or try Michael Kelley.
Sincerely, Bert-Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Product Description Solved Problem Series These books help readers review and master what they've learned by showing them how to solve thousands of relevant problems. Perfect for preparing for graduate or professional exams, these detailed reminders of problem-solving techniques show readers the best strategies for answering even the toughest questions, including the types that appear on typical tests. Customer reviews A Physics Cocktail by .. Delmer Reed (Costa Mesa, CA) The Schaum's 3000 Solved Problems is a very useful way to mix ability levels, and variety. However, it does not offer chapter by chapter quick notes like other Schaum's. So, if you don't have many of the skills or understanding when entering a problem you must refer to a text. The best thing about this book is that it offers a lot of problems in many areas so that a student may quickly find and target areas for review. My biggest peeve about help books is that the reader is bound to see problems from their own text time after time, and each of those problems is wasted energy. Always consult your text and then supplement this text for variety, but not authority. Learn from the in class text as much as possible because this book is the cut and dry mathematics. Overall, it's great for practice tests and helps here and there, which is more than what I can say about other books.
Has not helped by .. Jessica () This book has not helped me at all in my physics class, mainly because the problems are nothing like the ones my teacher assigns. They are all much easier.
Excellent Help In Physics by .. James E. Rayburn (Gastonia, NC USA) I've bought other books on the topic of physics as well. I'm an engineer/programmer, not a physics guru, and this is the book that's done me the most good with the advanced topics. For the price you can't go wrong, and the basic topics are covered very well also.
Exceptionally good by .. The Rizzler (Virginia) I'm a retired physicist and bought this book so I could pick out good problems for my daughter to solve as an adjunct to her high school textbook. It often happens that if you "get" a concept one or two problems is enough practice but when you're having trouble its nice to have many, many problems (and see the solutions) on a particular topic to work on until the concept "clicks". This book is perfect in that regard. I was also pleased that many of the problems go well beyond plug and pray. Last but not least, the solutions are CORRECT (I've yet to encounter an error).
The one criticism I would make is there is a tendency to have several sequential problems depend on the prior problem. Thus, if problem 8.47 looks interesting you might find that you have to first solve 8.45 and 8.46 before attempting it. Minor point....
I also bought Schaum's 3000 Calculus problems and found it to be just as good.
3,000 Solved Problems in Calculus
good book by .. someone () This book has plenty of practice problems and helped me to bring my grade up, but the problems seem kind of dry compared to textbook problems. Most of the problems have to do with the same situation (ex. boom, something going in a circle, inclined plane, etc.). Problems in texbooks are often more varied in style and force you think a bit more. If the problems are of a greater variety, this will definitely be 5 stars. I still recommend this for anyone who is hoping to get better grades in physics. You'll get a lot better by doing all those practice problems.

Product Description In today’s Internet-driven world, customers have more power than ever. Through what interactive marketing expert Pete Blackshaw calls "consumer-generated media"—blogs, social networking pages, message boards, product review sites—even a single disgruntled customer can broadcast his complaints to an audience of millions. Blackshaw shows managers, marketers, and business leaders how to establish and maintain credibility for their brand by being authentic, listening and responding to customers, and forming relationships built on openness, transparency, and trust.Filled with stories based on his experience working with Fortune 500 brands such as Toyota, Dell, Nike, Sony, General Motors, Hershey, Unilever, Nestlé, Lexus, and Bank of America, Blackshaw offers a clear strategy to sustain a competitive advantage by creating enduring, loyal relationships with today’s consumer. Customer reviews WOW, fantastic marketing expertise for 2009 by .. Kelly Close (San Francisco, CA United States) I was supremely impressed with this book. As a small business owner, after reading "Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends - Angry Customers Tell 3000," I feel I have far more expertise in knowing how to ask for and deliver feedback and knowing how to get smart on the lifeblood of any business - the customers. Pete Blackshaw's advice on building a brand in the optimal way is enormously insightful. Plus, at the end of the day, isn't this how we all want to live? Authentically, responsibly, thoughtfully, transparently, and trustfully. I gave away twelve copies at Christmas and wish i had dozens more! The incredible feedback I have received on this gift AND the valuable feedback I have received since reading the book prompted this review... many thanks to the author for the killer learning.
A great lesson in listening. by .. Todd Sebastian (Cincinnati, OH) As a young brand management intern 20 years ago, one of my projects was to monitor the consumer feedback my brand received via the 800-line. Back then, this type of work was viewed as merely administrative - and was given to interns as a way to "cut their teeth" in brand management work without messing up anything of strategic importance.
Today, things are much different. Pete Blackshaw is leading a revolutionary change in how companies monitor and react to customer feedback - and the importance they place on it. He is pioneering unprecedented methods for mining feedback and developing business-building strategies to leverage it - and thus drive ever-improving customer satisfaction and loyalty.
This book is an exhaustive yet easy-to-follow look at how Pete is reshaping the loyalty landscape.

Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3000 by .. Richard Lerner () Finally an author who understands that a sale is only the beginning.
I am one of those fed up consumers who bitches. I have written, yelled, documented, threatened and cajoled.
Mr. Blackshaw shines a light on an obvious truth! How come it took so long! How come this is not required reading for every CEO who has lost touch!
If it were not for the internet, blogs and Pete Blackshaw, complaining would still be a very lonely business.
Thanks Pete Blackshaw
The Guy Who Coined the Term Consumer-Generated Media by .. Rebecca Lieb (New York, NY USA) There's no one more qualified to write a book about consumer-generated media (CGM) than Pete Blackshaw, the guy who actually coined the now-ubiquitous term.
"Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3,000" may not be the only title on the market to deal with CGM, word-of-mouth marketing, and the effect Web-enabled consumer empowerment is having on products, brands, and companies, but it's certainly among the most knowledgeable and authoritative. Blackshaw has deep, deep roots in this stuff, going back to his founding of PlanetFeedback.com, the first online initiative dedicated to listening to consumers.
Theory is one thing, practice is another. One of "Satisfied Customers'" many strengths is backing up such pronouncements with detailed, and often hair-raising, case studies and true stories of CGM gone very, very right (and often the other way) for a wide range of major companies: Toyota, Dell, Nike, Sony, General Motors, Hershey, Unilever, Nestlé, Lexus, and Bank of America are just for starters.
Blackshaw's central argument: credibility plus authenticity plus transparency equal success, and that listening to and promptly responding to consumers are an absolutely essential element of doing business, particularly as the world becomes increasingly wired. This is good news and creates new opportunities. "Use it to your advantage, or ignore it at your peril," he warns. "Credibility may not be on your balance sheet, but it's the best asset you've got."

Product Description Revised, full-color illustrated edition of the multi-award-winning, international bestseller that charts the unparalleled and astounding achievement of ancient China • Brings to life one hundred Chinese “firsts” in the fields of agriculture, astronomy, engineering, mathematics, medicine, music, technology, and warfare • Based on the definitive work of the world’s most famous Sinologist, Joseph Needham (1900-1995), author of Science and Civilisation in China • Organized by field, invention, and discovery for ease of reference Undisputed masters of invention and discovery for 3,000 years, the ancient Chinese were the first to discover the solar wind and the circulation of the blood and even to isolate sex hormones. From the suspension bridge and the seismograph to deep drilling for natural gas, the iron plough, and the parachute, ancient China’s contributions in the fields of engineering, medicine, technology, mathematics, science, transportation, warfare, and music helped inspire the European agricultural and industrial revolutions. Since its original publication, The Genius of China has won five literary awards in America and been translated into 43 languages. Its Chinese edition, The Spirit of Chinese Invention, was approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education for use in connection with the national secondary curriculum in China. Based on the immense, authoritative scholarship of the late Joseph Needham, the world’s foremost scholar of Chinese science, and including a foreword by him, this revised full-color illustrated edition brings to life the spirit and excitement of the unparalleled achievements of ancient China. Customer reviews Enthusiastic but inaccurate by .. Clint () Let me start by saying that I read this book while I was in college, which was about ten years ago, so I can't recall all the details. I know I enjoyed it for a little while, until I noticed that Robert Temple often has no idea what he is talking about, or perhaps he simply ignores reality when it doesn't fit with his story.
Temple argues, for example, that inflation is not possible without paper money. At one point, he talks about a very clever chemical process that was invented in ancient China, and at the end he admits that there is absolutely no evidence that the process he describes actually worked.
If you are into steampunk, or if you aren't interested in actual facts, this is a really great read. There are a lot of nifty ideas and clever devices, but reality is never allowed to get in the way of the story of just how awesome China was. If you have a lot of time and money, check out Joseph Needham's Science and Civilisation in China, or maybe the Shorter Science and Civilisation in China. I'm sure there are plenty of good, reliable books on ancient Chinese inventions. This is not one of them.
A superb overview by .. Ben Gardiner (San Francisco) This is a superb and detailed list with explanations of Chinese inventions over the past 2,000 years. It is a summary of the 35-volume work by Prof. Joseph Needham. Though it is well written it is not easy reading because there is so much information, concisely expressed. Thus it makes an excellent reference book.
The Genius of China: 3,000 Years of Science, Discovery, abd Invention by .. R. S. Chan (Edmonds, WA USA) This is a summary of the many volumes on Chinese scientific inventions and discoveries compiled by the late Prof. Joseph Needham. It gives readers an idea of the depth of the advanced scientific discoveries from ancient China. This is a fantastic book. It is like giving the world all the ancient Chinese secrets. I love it.
The Genius of China by .. peony jasmine (Wash. DC met. area) This book is very good to have, especially for Chinese parents with children. Children with Chinese ascentors will be proud of their ancestry and thus accept who they are and not try to be someone else. It will help to cultivate self awareness in children with Chinese blood.
An outstanding survey highly recommended for any collection strong in Chinese history and culture. by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) The ancient Chinese were masters of discovery and innovation for 3,000 years, and THE GENIUS OF CHINA: 3,000 YEARS OF SCIENCE, DISCOVERY & INVENTION documents these discoveries, originally winning five literary awards with its original publication. Its republication makes for a top pick for any college-level collection strong in Chinese history and culture, offering a revised full-color edition that brings to life elements of ancient Chinese history. China's early contributions to science, engineering, medicine and technology are documented in an outstanding survey highly recommended for any collection strong in Chinese history and culture.
