Wroble (Waldorf, MD) My husband and I honeymooned in Oahu. We took this and the Lonely Planet guide to Hawaii. Taking both gave each of us something to read on the plane. I'd take either or both again.
Large and informative by .. B. Cohen () Better than Hawaii for Dummies but not as well organized. It's already saved us $80 in helicopter tours from what the cruiseline was charging us. There are great gift tips, too.
Ultimate by .. Harley (Ohio) If you go anywhere, you'll have to get Frommer's books! They say all there is too say. Fantastic and a good vacation tool!
Must have companion for a first timer/newbie to Hawaii by .. Utah Blaine (Somewhere on Trexalon in District 268) I just returned from my first trip to Hawaii (business mostly, but vacation too) and this book was my constant companion. This is an incredibly useful book that described what to do, where to go and how to get around - this book is packed with detailed and useful information. All of the islands are described, and sample itineraries are provided for each of the islands. Like all the Frommer's travel books, this book will give you lots of ideas about what to see and where to eat and where to stay. There were some minor errors in the text (e.g. the bus passes are considerably more expensive than stated in the book), and I didn't always agree with their assessments of restaurants, but these are minor complaints. I wouldn't pay any attention to the negative reviews of this book, if you are a first timer to Hawaii, this book would be a great travelling companion.
Pretty useless by .. Einaras Graurogkas (L.A, CA) An encyclopedia, not a travel guide. I purchased this book, but had to purchase EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE instead. Very disappointing.

Product Description Hit the beach and snorkel amid the coral reefs of a sunken volcanic crater, take a road trip past lava deserts and steaming craters, belly up to a 180-foot seafood buffet in Waikiki, or hit the links on the slopes of Mt. Olomana — Fodor's Hawaii 2005 covers all these experiences and more! From the Big Island to Maui, our local writers have traveled throughout Paradise, to find the best hotels, restaurants, attractions and activities to prepare you for a journey of stunning variety. Before you leave for Hawaii, be sure to pack your Fodor's guide to ensure you don't miss a thing. The San Francisco Chronicle sums it up best —"Fodor's guides are saturated with information." -New compact trim size make these guides even more portable -Two-color interior design makes it easier to find the information you need -Fodor's Choice Ratings flag must-see sights and hidden treasures -Hotel and restaurant reviews cover all budgets -Plus multi-day itineraries to help you build the right trip for you and/or your family Customer reviews I like the restaurant section by .. J. J. Zaca () I swam through the pages while relaxing by the hotel pool. I always like the restaurant reviews and we went to quite a few nice places. For Fodor readers you can expect the same ol same ol. They don't go off the deep end and are rather conservative with their outings. Sampling the restaurants and keeping the listings current is their strong suit.
Good for Drivers by .. Erika Mitchell (E. Calais, VT USA) This book is a decent guide for trip planning in Hawaii. For each island, there is a general introduction to geography, climate, and history, a map, and a listing of greatest places to visit. Next come suggested itineraries for varying lengths of times, for example, 1 day, 3 days, or 8 days. The main section of each chapter consists of specific suggestions for things to do and places to stay and eat for localities on the island, together with more detailed maps. Relative measures of costs for the recommended hotels and eateries are noted, as well as addresses, phone numbers, and web sites where available. Notes about sports, theater, and shopping are also included. At the end of the chapters are more tips about such topics as airport arrivals, transfers, and transportation, car rental, and sight-seeing tours.
At the end of the book is a collection of articles covering more general information about the state. This section includes a brief overview covering topics from geology, to mythology, to fashion (the famous Aloha shirt). Next is a listing of books and films to enjoy before you visit, then a historical chronology, some general travel information about Hawaii (business hours, car rental rules, what to pack, safety tips, taxes, climate, holidays, etc.). There is also a introduction to Hawaiian phrases, a menu reader, and an index. Metric conversion tables are printed inside the back cover, and vacation checklists inside the front cover. There is a set of color plates covering all the islands at the very beginning of the book.
One of the particular strengths of this guide when compared to others is that it often provides estimated driving times for routes across the islands or to particular attractions. This can be incredibly helpful for trip planning, since it gives you a gauge of what activities might be possible to fit into a single day, or how long to allow to get from one place to another. The suggested itineraries are also quite useful-even if you don't plan to follow them, they do provide a starting point for planning your own itineraries. While this guide book doesn't specialize in pointing out the cheapest places to stay and eat, there are some possibilities listed for all budgets, and including the web addresses is quite useful.
A GREAT VALUE by .. Vicki Schott (South Portland, Maine) I have to give Fodor's Hawaii a Gold Star. We traveled to Lanai and Maui and Kauai with our golf group and as the days passed we all got a chance to read each other's guidebooks. All of us agreed that this was way over the top for QUALITY and insider tips. Theunissen pulls out all the stops and I'm just rereading it now that I'm home and still find places I want to return to and spend time. Make sure you get the latest copy. They come out with a new one every year.
Adequate, but better guides available by .. C. Stumpe () We just got back from a trip to Oahu and the Big Island. This book is satisfactory for persons not doing many activites, but the guidebooks "Oahu Revealed" and "The Big Island Revealed" had
a great deal more information about snorkeling, ocean kayaking, beach conditions by season for boarding, etc. The pictures in the "Revealed" series really helps you get a feel for the places you may want to visit. I would recomend Fodors for a person who is not leaving a megaresort or staying only in Waikiki, but the other books have much more helpful info about activities and parks.
Also, the maps in Oahu revealed are the best I've found. Period. Lots of em, well cross referenced, good color schemes, and easy to read.

Local and author's favorites are identified along with family friendly venues to help sort through the choices. Finally, actual menu items and prices are listed. What may appeal and be affordable to one person might be an entirely different story to another. Customer reviews Don't know where to eat? It's not a problem! by .. Love to travel (Colorado) This is a great guide to the restaurants in Hawaii. The reviews are thorough including menus, prices and atmosphere. Instead of wondering around looking for a restaurant that has the "look", this guide makes it easy to pick the places within your budget. A great way to enhance a vacation in wonderful place.
You need this book! by .. D. Perlow (Phila, Pa) This guide gave me everything I wanted to know about the restaurants on the islands that we visited. Not only did the authors include the standard reviews with price and best dish info but they also gave an idea of the "feel" of the restaurant and (important for us) whether the restaurant was kid friendly. We found the comments about "favorite with the locals" very helpful. Whatever your price range, there are many and varied cuisine style choices to fill your needs. Every island was well researched with far more good restaurants illustrated than the average tourist would ever have time to try. Great resource.
