I learned of this book the hard way, a child psychologist recommended it when my the 6-year-old son was in danger of being thrown out of school. I dreaded taking him into stores and I had to sit in the "crying" room of my church, because he would not behave. My son has Aspergers, and some of his behavior had to do with that, mostly it had to do with me.
I read the book, and the principles in it take a little time to absorb. The main premise (and I'm paraphrasing, in my own words): 1) Give a warning. 2) Give a consequence 3) Take action. Idol threats don't work, you have to follow through. I had to take my crying son out of stores a few times, but it started working. I didn't take long before I really started to notice a difference. Today, 6 years later, he is very well behaved.
You have to have a little patience, but this does work. I also recommend Boundaries for Kids.

I received a copy of this book from a friend when I reached my wits with my 3 year old. We were fighting over every single thing, and it was straining my relationship with her to the core.
I must say I don't use the discipline technique exactly, but have found all of the principals and ideas so enlightening. I can see using it more completely when my child is a bit older, and it is nice that I know how to do it. I recommend this book to anyone I can because it has has given me a parenting style that works and improved my relationship with my child 100%.

We tried many approaches with our children involving treating them as little adults such as the STEP program and had nothing but trouble. We didn't find this book until our children were approaching teen ages but the advice was still excellent and transformed our relationships. This author, years ago put in writing simple techniques that allow you to set rules, to create a situation where the children learn boundaries even before they fully understand the need for rules, and everyone in the family, large and small, can get through situations without unnecessary stress or embarrassment. Everything you see on TV with the nanny shows is the embodiment of these simple principles.

I bought the book and received it from Amazon. I personally have been waiting a long time and am glad to see it is finally released. Overall the best and largest book available on the topic. If you have ever attended one of Sal's standing room only AppleScript classes (I have) the book is structured as he describes in the forward. He took his classes and put them in print. He starts off with the basics and quickly moves into more complex examples. If you know AppleScript the first chapter may move slow for you, but you can easily jump ahead. Best $31 you can spend if you are interested in learning AppleScript and don't have lots of time. Disregard the one star review. Don't pan the book because Amazon has a weak "Look Inside" you don't like. You can give Amazon one star in other places.

I found the chapter very helpful. I have no experience with AppleScript, but was intrigued enough to tweak a few scripts. It was an easy read. Based on that chapter alone, I'm giving it a rating of 4 stars. I'll update this review once I've read the entire book.

This is a great book. Easy to read and understand. Seems easy to implement. The only hard part is getting other family members / caretakers to comply. :-) A friend of mine bought the DVD's so we are passing them around the Bible Study group so the families can all become familiar with the discipline strategy. So far my very outgoing son responds really great to the 1-2-3, now mom (me) just needs to stop being emotional!

I am not all the way through the book yet, but I'm already using some of their ideas for behavior in public. So far, so good. I think I have a pretty good test child! I have yet to see long term results at home since we haven't actually started, but I think they are on to something here.

There are certainly enough parenting books on the market today with a variety of topics to choose from. Still parents are looking for the magic that can help them discipline their children in a less painful and more effective manner. These authors, one a clinical psychologist and the other a certified counselor and associate pastor, offer practical tips for parents and other caregivers to manage the behavior of young children. The book introduces its concepts within the framework of the teachings of the Bible. The authors admit that "The Bible gives many great principles for raising children. The difficulty comes in application." Therefore, the need for the book.
We've all been in a check-out line and wondered why the parents didn't discipline the child in the next aisle screaming for a candy bar. Most of us have probably witnessed a child being disciplined inappropriately too. It is not an easy task to do it right, but so worthwhile.
The book is divided into three steps. First you learn how to control obnoxious behavior. Second you learn seven methods for encouraging appropriate and positive behavior. Finally you lean how to maintain healthy relationships. Despite the title, there is really no magic, but instead precise tools that are simple and effective in helping parents to resolve their children's discipline issues.
The organization of the book makes it easy-to-follow. I appreciate the Points to Remember at the end of each chapter as they summarize the main ideas. The Questions for Christian Practice give readers the opportunity to reflect on what they've read and even refer to specific chapters in the Bible. The authors make the introduced concepts seem so simple that you can start using them immediately.
The Little Adult Assumption was a new way of thinking for me. Of course children aren't adults, but we do sometimes try to deal with them as if they were. The book talks about the two biggest mistakes parents make: too much talking and too much emotion. This chapter will always have a bookmark in it so I can refer back to it frequently to help me with some of my top issues too. The authors prescribe positive self-talk, reciting appropriate Bible verses, praying and finally seeking counseling if needed to deal with these issues.
It is particularly useful that there are exact scenarios included with scripts of how events may play out based on how parents react. It also addresses other caregivers and how they can follow the same system as the parents. The authors even include a chapter on the Kickoff Conversation, or how to introduce the new program to your children. The book sticks to its Bible base with frequent quotes. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it" sums up the program (Proverbs 22:6).
We can all use more training on childrearing. It is a never-ending job, but one of the most important ones we will ever do. "1-2-3 Magic for Christian Parents: Effective Discipline for Children 2 - 12" is a book worth picking up and actually reading before your child grows up.

Your first concern must be: "Only three ingredients?! The recipes can't taste that good." Let me assure you that the recipes are absolutely delicious, despite the fact that they contain only three ingredients. (Recipes often contain salt and pepper, which are not considered ingredients.)
However, here's the caveat: While the recipes call for only three ingredients, many of those ingredients are rare indeed. Examples: saffron threads, Thai curry oil, za'atar, pomegranate molasses, rutabaga, Asiago cheese, creme fraiche, fresh tarragon, tandoori paste, mango chutney, etc. You were probably thinking: "Only three ingredients, I'll definitely have all three ingredients in my house." Think again. Unless you have fennel seeds in your house, you can't make the roast pork recipe on page 164. So many recipes call for obscure ingredients, I felt the need to alert potential buyers.
That being disclosed, many recipes call for ingredients that you will probably have. And all the recipes I've tried so far have been delicious and easy to prepare.

This book has tons of recipes but I was disappointed when I recieved the book because many of the recipes do not have pictures. For me, pictures are essential to cookbooks because I like to see what the dish looks like. Because of the lack of pictures, I don't look at this book much and have not tried many of the recipes. i should add that where there are pictures, they are nicely done. The book would be greatly enhanced if there was a picture for every recipe.

I ordered a copy of this book from The Good Cook cook book club. The description sounded really intriguing--only 3 ingredients for each recipe (not including salt, pepper, and water). What a beautifully simple idea! The book is gorgeous, and the recipes sound very fresh and tasty. Can't wait to try them. As a seasoned cook who is also a busy person and has to cook on the fly, I can tell that this is a well-thought-through and elegant approach to cooking--just my cup of tea--using fresh and wholesome recipes rendered very creatively.

Do not be fooled into thinking that because every one of these 500 recipes has only 3 ingredients, (excluding salt, pepper and water) that the recipes are quick and easy. Some are. What could be simpler than mixing mayo and wasabi, spreading it onto salmon fillets and shoving it in the oven for 10 minutes? However, the 18-hour slow-cooked pork, while very easy, needs 6 hours absorbing its spices, and 18 hours in a very slow oven. Not quick. And the pears Belle Helene need you to poach some pears, make sorbet with the others, stuff the pears with sorbet and top the lot with chocolate. Neither quick nor all that easy. Nor does the book reduce pantry space with its reduced ingredients; you'll want to stock up with garlic oil and hunt down pomegranate molasses, for example.
What the book does well is give you a feel for how ingredients work in a dish. Once you've sautéed asparagus in sesame oil, you'll never look back. If you're a beginner cook, you may find the book less useful, as it assumes you have basic cooking techniques. If you're an innovative and enthusiastic cook, you'll be poring over it for hours and producing some rather spectacular results.

I use this book many times each week. It is easily the best book in my busy household. The recipes are easy to follow and they give me a sense of accomplishment when I produce something so delicious. I am going to get all her other books. Home made meals really are the best!

I purchased a previous edition of this book and used it to replace a deck and to prepare a house that I was putting up for sale. I found that edition very useful. I just purchased this new edition and found that it had been edited (censored) and was missing at least one key section..the section with step by step instructions for replacing a deck was completely gone...nothing at all about decks...not even basic repairs or maintainance...I can only imagine this section was removed so that readers will be forced to employ contractors instead of doing the work themselves...I am very disappoined that Home Depot chose to short change their customers and I encourage readers to buy the previous edition of the book...note..the table of contents listed on Amazon still shows a section on decks...the actual book does not have this section.
